Abstract:The effects of the geometry, arrangement and number of embedded rectangular barriers on the mixing performance for three types of wavy micro-channels were investigated by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. The mass transportation model based on the flow field was applied to simulate the mixing process, in terms of mixing snapshots and fluids mixing rate. The averaged fluid line stretching and Lyapunov exponent were used to characterize the chaotic behavior, which was induced by the periodic velocity field in the micro-channels, due to the V-shaped grooves and barriers. By setting the barriers slantwise or changing its geometry and number, chaos was further enhanced, reinforcing the fluids mixing more effectively. The mixing performance of each mixer by different Peclet number Pe was studied, and the dimension-one mixing length was found to grow linearly with ln Pe.
Enhanced turbulent mixing in mesoscale eddies near the critical latitude of the M2 internal tides

Abstract:Mesoscale eddies can elevate turbulent mixing, but the mechanisms have not been fully understood. Based on a field experiment in two mesoscale eddies near the critical latitude of the M2 internal tides in the northwestern Pacific Ocean, enhanced turbulent mixing was found both in and below the mixed layer. Microstructure observations indicate that enhanced turbulent mixing mainly appeared outside the eddy center in the mixed layer (approximately 117 m), which was speculated to be related to geostrophic current shear. By analyzing the CTD and Argo measurements through a fine-scale parameterization method, enhanced turbulent mixing was found to be concentrated at the southern flank of the anticyclonic eddy below 300 m, which showed little correlation with topographic roughness and local winds. Based on a ray-tracing model, the wind-generated near-inertial waves at higher latitudes were also excluded as the cause of the enhanced turbulent mixing. The enhanced turbulent mixing below 300 m was generally consistent with the features of subthermocline eddies and eddy-modulated parametric subharmonic instability (PSI) of the M2 internal tides. However, due to the limitation of observations, the eddy-modulated PSI mechanism was not fully validated.

Abstract:Large-scale isentropic mixing in the tropical lower stratosphere is investigated by computing Lagrangian trajectories using winds from the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory SKYHI general circulation model, The use of model-simulated winds avoids some problems with analyzed winds in the tropics, During the solstitial seasons a weak-mixing zone is present in the tropics in the model simulations. The weak-mixing zone is relatively isolated from the midlatitude surf zones in the northern and southern hemispheres by two mixing barriers: a strong one on the summer hemisphere side and a weak one on the winter side, The mixing barriers vary seasonally in response to seasonal variations of the tropical zonal-mean zonal flow and wave spectrum, The roles of the zonal-mean flow and of different parts of the wave spectrum in meridional transport are tested using filter techniques. Effective meridional diffusion coefficients are calculated by using filtered and antifiltered winds (i.e., winds with selected spatial scales either attenuated or amplified), The results suggest that mixing in the tropical easterlies occurs near the critical layers for the large-scale (zonal wavenumber <10) westward moving waves, which is where the waves would be expected to break, Wave spectrum analysis indicates that during the solstitial seasons there is a zone in the tropics, exactly matching the weak-mixing zone, where there is relatively little power in westward moving waves, The tropical mixing barriers are a result of the relative lack of such waves.
Effect of Langmuir Circulation on Upper Ocean Mixing in the South China Sea

Abstract:Effect of Langmuir circulation（LC） on upper ocean mixing is investigated by a two-way wave-current coupled model.The model is coupled of the ocean circulation model ROMS（regional ocean modeling system） to the surface wave model SWAN（simulating waves nearshore） via the model-coupling toolkit.The LC already certified its importance by many one-dimensional（1D） research and mechanism analysis work.This work focuses on inducing LC’s effect in a three-dimensional（3-D） model and applying it to real field modeling.In ROMS,the Mellor-Yamada turbulence closure mixing scheme is modified by including LC’s effect.The SWAN imports bathymetry,free surface and current information from the ROMS while exports significant wave parameters to the ROMS for Stokes wave computing every 6 s.This coupled model is applied to the South China Sea（SCS） during September 2008 cruise.The results show that LC increasing turbulence and deepening mixed layer depth（MLD） at order of O（10 m） in most of the areas,especially in the north part of SCS where most of our measurements operated.The coupled model further includes wave breaking which will brings more energy into water.When LC works together with wave breaking,more energy is transferred into deep layer and accelerates the MLD deepening.In the north part of the SCS,their effects are more obvious.This is consistent with big wind event in the area of the Zhujiang River Delta.The shallow water depth as another reason makes them easy to influence the ocean mixing as well.
Spatial and Temporal Variability of Turbulent Mixing in the Deep Northwestern Pacific

Abstract:Small‐scale turbulent mixing supplies potential energy for the upwelling of deep waters in the abyssal ocean, a key component of the global overturning circulation. This process is particularly significant in critical regions such as the Northwestern Pacific where the upwelling structure of deep waters remains poorly understood due to limited knowledge of deep ocean mixing. Here, we investigate the full‐depth spatiotemporal variability of turbulent mixing in the deep Northwestern Pacific based on hydrographic data collected over repeated surveys. Nineteen‐year‐average diapycnal diffusivity of 1.42 × 10−4 m2 s−1 is reveled in the deep Philippine Sea, indicating significantly stronger mixing compared to the stratified ocean interior. Spatially, turbulent mixing strengthens toward the bottom and intensifies westward from the open Pacific to the Philippine Sea due to rough topography. At certain mixing hotspots, enhanced mixing can penetrate up to 2,500 m above the bottom, suggesting a substantial potential for upwelling. Below 2,000 m, turbulent mixing exhibits pronounced seasonal variation that deep mixing is more intense in summer (winter) than in winter (summer) in the West Caroline Basin (the Parece Vela Basin). This spatially varying seasonality may be attributed to the inhomogeneous internal tidal energy dissipation in the Northwestern Pacific. Our study will serve to clarify the modulation of turbulent mixing to deep‐water mass transformation and circulation in the Northwestern Pacific.

Abstract:Shear instability is a dominant mechanism for mixing in the stratified oceans and coastal seas. For the first time, we present fine‐scale, direct measurements of shear instabilities in the bottom front generated by the Kuroshio intrusion into the Changjiang (Yangtze) river plume. Shear instabilities were identified using a shipboard echo‐sounder and the resulting turbulent mixing was quantified using a turbulence microstructure profiler. The shear instabilities generate vigorous turbulent mixing with dissipation rate and vertical diffusivity up to O (10−4 m2 s−3) and O (10−1 m2 s−1), respectively, comparable to values associated with shear instabilities observed in river plumes and western boundary currents but several orders of magnitude larger than typical values in the open ocean. The enhanced turbulence may contribute significantly to mixing between the Kuroshio water and coastal water and thereby alter the coastal biogeochemistry cycles.

Abstract:Diapycnal mixing in the upper western equatorial Pacific (WEP) plays an important role in the tropical air–sea interactions and in the formation of the global climate system. Yet, the WEP is uniquely rich in water masses originating from the two hemispheres and in multiscale processes of different dynamical nature, thus creating a complex regime of mixing remains to be fully characterized by elaborate observations. Here, on the basis of microstructure measurements in the WEP, we report the observations on a strong deep cycle turbulence extending well into the upper thermocline by westerly wind event, with the turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate ε ~ O (10 −8 –10 −7 ) W kg −1 and diapycnal diffusivity K ρ ∼ O (10 −4 ) m 2 s −1 . Below the deep cycle turbulence layer, turbulence and mixing are generally weak with ε ~ O (10 −10 –10 −9 ) W kg −1 and K ρ ∼ O (10 −7 –10 −6 ) m 2 s −1 , a prototype of the weak mixing nature of the low-latitude western Pacific. The observed turbulence below the deep cycle turbulence layer can be satisfactorily scaled by either the MacKinnon–Gregg model or the Richardson number–based model with tuned model parameters.

Simulation of the Ocean Surface Mixed Layer under the Wave Breaking

Abstract:A one-dimensional mixed-layer model, including a Mellor-Yamada level 2.5 turbulence closure scheme, was implemented to investigate the dynamical and thermal structures of the ocean surface mixed layer in the northern South China Sea. The turbulent kinetic energy released through wave breaking was incorporated into the model as a source of energy at the ocean surface, and the influence of the breaking waves on the mixed layer was studied. The numerical simulations show that the simulated SST is overestimated in summer without the breaking waves. However, the cooler SST is simulated when the effect of the breaking waves is considered, the corresponding discrepancy with the observed data decreases up to 20% and the MLD calculated averagely deepens 3.8 m. Owing to the wave-enhanced turbulence mixing in the summertime, the stratification at the bottom of the mixed layer was modified and the temperature gradient spread throughout the whole thermocline compared with the concentrated distribution without wave breaking.

Abstract:The Kuroshio occasionally carries warm and salty North Pacific Water into fresher waters of the South China Sea, forming a front with a complex temperature-salinity (T-S) structure to the west of the Luzon Strait. In this study, we examine the T-S interleavings formed by alternating layers of North Pacific water with South China Sea water in a front formed during the winter monsoon season of 2014. Using observations from a glider array following a free-floating wave-powered vertical profiling float to calculate the fine-scale parameters Turner angle, Tu, and Richardson number, Ri, we identified areas favorable to double diffusion convection and shear instability observed in a T-S interleaving. We evaluated the contribution of double diffusion convection and shear instabilities to the thermal variance diffusivity, X, using microstructure data and compared it with previous parameterization schemes based on fine-scale properties. We discover that turbulent mixing is not accurately parameterized when both Tu and Ri are within critical ranges (Tu > 60, Ri < 1/4). In particular, X associated with salt finger processes was an order of magnitude higher (6.7×10−7 K2 s−1) than in regions where only velocity shear was likely to drive mixing (8.7×10−8 K2 s−1).

Roles of breaking waves and Langmuir circulation in the surface boundary layer of a coastal ocean

Abstract:Breaking waves and Langmuir circulation are two important turbulent processes in the wind-driven upper ocean. To investigate their roles in generating turbulence in the surface boundary layer of a coastal ocean, a large eddy simulation model is used to simulate the turbulence measurements collected at the Martha's Vineyard Coastal Observatory's Air-Sea Interaction Tower, during the Coupled Boundary Layers and Air-Sea Transfer (CBLAST) experiment in 2003. The model provides reasonable predictions for the vertical profiles of vertical velocity variance, turbulent kinetic energy (TKE), energy dissipation rates, and heat flux. It shows breaking waves dominating turbulence generation near the ocean surface and turbulent large eddies characteristic of Langmuir circulation deeper in the water column. Diagnostic analysis of TKE budget in the model shows a dominant balance between turbulent transport and dissipation near the surface and a dominant balance between shear production and dissipation at deeper depths. Although the Stokes production is a significant term in the TKE budget balance near the surface, it is smaller than shear production. The turbulent transport is large in the near-surface zone and is still significant in the region affected by Langmuir circulation. These results are in agreement with a conclusion inferred from a recent analysis of the near-surface turbulence measurements at the CBLAST site.

Abstract:The hadal Mariana Trench remains poorly understood. In December 2016, an array of high-resolution temperature loggers, attached to the ocean bottom seismometers (OBSs), was deployed from 1665 to 7520 m for two weeks across the Challenger Deep of the Southern Mariana Trench. The temperature variance spectrum reveals that the bottom water is mildly turbulent and it is mainly modulated by the semidiurnal internal tides. At the second deepest observation station (depth of 7015 m), the viscous subrange is resolved in the high-frequency spectrum. Applying the proposed method with Taylor's frozen field hypothesis and Kraichnan theoretical spectrum analysis, it is revealed that turbulent dissipation rate ɛ is 7.8×10−10 m2/s3 and flow speed U is 8.9 mm/s. Dissipation rates ɛ of all stations vary between 5.9×10−11 and 1.4×10−9 m2/s3 , with the northern region of Challenger Deep experiencing stronger energy dissipation than the southern one. The vertical distribution of dissipation rate ɛ shows that it decreases with increasing depth from 1000 to 6000 m, but then increases to around 8000 m, which is consistent with previous observations and numerical simulations. The available turbulent mixing data indicates that the energy dissipation is vertically distributed in a distinct multilayer structure in the deep ocean of Challenger Deep, which is proposed to link to the intrusion of water mass in the deep Mariana trench.

Enhanced Diapycnal Mixing Between Water Masses in the Western Equatorial Pacific

Abstract:Diapycnal mixing of momentum and heat is crucially important to ocean dynamics, as it affects the state of the ocean and its interactions with the atmosphere. For realistic climate and circulation predictions, the magnitude and distribution of diapycnal mixing must be accurately represented in ocean models. Based on full‐depth microstructure data obtained in the western equatorial Pacific, we demonstrate that there is an enhanced diapycnal diffusivity layer nested below the thermocline of the western equatorial Pacific. Diapycnal diffusivities in this layer range from 5×10−6 to 5× 10−4 m2 s−1, one to two orders of magnitude higher than those predicted by the wave‐wave interaction theory (5 ×10−7−5×10−6 m2 s−1). These enhanced diapycnal mixings are strongly related to the South Pacific Tropical Water intrusion. Stratification is largely weakened by the South Pacific Tropical Water intrusion; thus, the shear can easily trigger shear instabilities and induce strong diapycnal mixing. This enhanced diapycnal diffusivity layer occupies the water column between ~250 and 750 m and spans from the equator to 10°N. Such widespread enhanced diapycnal mixing related to water mass intrusions may play an important role in the dynamics of the equatorial ocean, and it should be taken into account in ocean models. The Pacific is the largest ocean in the world and plays an important role in the global climate change. For example, it affects the typhoons, rainfall, and monsoon, which clearly affects human activities. To accurately predict the ocean circulation and climate, it is needed to understand the dynamic mechanism of the ocean, especially the turbulent mixing that changes the properties of sea water and drives the ocean circulation. In this study, we investigated the turbulent mixing between water masses with observation. We found that there is a layer of enhanced turbulent mixing with a thickness of approximately 500 m in the western equatorial Pacific. This strong turbulent mixing layer was strongly related to the water mass intrusion. Understanding the impact of the water mass on the turbulent mixing can provide references for ocean models and improve their prediction of the climate and circulation. The three-dimensional vortical structure in time-developing mixing layer with cross shear

Abstract:A new method used to describe three-dimensional mixing layers with discrete vortex filaments is studied. Based on this method, the three-dimensional mixing layers are computed numerically. The vortical structure, distribution of mean velocity and momentum loss thickness in different time are given. The effects of shear rate and intensity of disturbance on flows are analysed. Some computed results are compared with experimental ones, they show a good agreement. The results given in the paper are helpful to understand such flows.
Particle segregation within bidisperse turbidity current evolution

Abstract:Multigrain/polydispersity has a significant impact on turbidity current (TC). Despite the fact that several researches have looked into this effect, the impact of the fluid-particle interactions is not fully understood. Motivated by this, we employ the Eulerian-Lagrangian computational fluid dynamics-discrete element method model to investigate the dynamics of the bidisperse lock-exchange TC. Results show that, because the coarse particles will settle faster and stop moving forward, the two phases of bidisperse transport and fine component transport can be distinguished in the evolution of the bidisperse TC. During the bidisperse transport stage, the upper interface of each component is primarily determined by their own settling and transport characteristics and does not strongly depend on the relative fine particle volume fraction fF. Fine particles are primarily responsible for the vortical structures near the upper interface of the TC head, and the increase of fF promotes their streamwise development. In comparison, fragmented vortical coherent structures are closely related to the presence of coarse particles, which can be seen in the lower layers. Bidisperse segregation alters the collision process between dispersed phases, which differs from monodisperse TC. The collisions and segregation-induced flow establish interconnections between the two dispersed phases. In the latter stage, the transport of fine particles is inhibited by both the lift force and the contact force produced by the collision with the deposited materials. As fF rises, the negative contact force weakens, and its change is essentially balanced by the rise in negative lift force.

Abstract:As an important physical process at the air-sea interface, wave movement and breaking have a significant effect on the ocean surface mixed layer (OSML). When breaking waves occur at the ocean surface, turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) is input downwards, and a sublayer is formed near the surface and turbulence vertical mixing is intensively enhanced. A one-dimensional ocean model including the Mellor-Yamada level 2.5 turbulence closure equations was employed in our research on variations in turbulent energy budget within OSML. The influence of wave breaking could be introduced into the model by modifying an existing surface boundary condition of the TKE equation and specifying its input. The vertical diffusion and dissipation of TKE were effectively enhanced in the sublayer when wave breaking was considered. Turbulent energy dissipated in the sublayer was about 92.0% of the total depth-integrated dissipated TKE, which is twice higher than that of non-wave breaking. The shear production of TKE decreased by 3.5% because the mean flow fields tended to be uniform due to wave-enhanced turbulent mixing. As a result, a new local equilibrium between diffusion and dissipation of TKE was reached in the wave-enhanced layer. Below the sublayer, the local equilibrium between shear production and dissipation of TKE agreed with the conclusion drawn from the classical law-of-the-wall (Craig and Banner, 1994).
Millisecond Mixing of Two Liquid Streams in a Mixer Model

Abstract:Fast liquid mixing in the flow channels at millimeter size was studied by planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) technique in experiments and the large eddy simulation (LES) as well. A simplified mixer model was applied, where two liquid streams impinge into each other in the confined channels. A dynamic kinetic energy sub-grid scale (SGS) model of LES was employed to simulate the fast liquid mixing. The results show that LES predictions with high-density meshes have good agreement with the experimental data in terms of the instantaneous and time-averaged concentration fields, and the probability density function (PDF) of concentration fluctuations. Hence, the mixing quality characterized by the intensity of segregation (IOS) and 95% mixing time can be also predicted reasonably. The LES simulations further predict the significant effect of cross-flow angle on the mixing process. The cross-flow angle of 90∘ gives the fastest mixing of two liquids in the millimeter channels at 1–2ms. The mixing layer between the two liquid streams cannot be observed under the geometry with larger cross-flow angles. This indicates different mixing mechanisms compared with the mixing of two liquids flowing in parallel. Vorticity in the turbulent mixing process is discussed for a better understanding on the physical factors controlling the mixing process.
Deep-Cycle Turbulence in the Upper Pacific Equatorial Ocean: Characterization by LES and Heat Flux Parameterization

Abstract:Observations in the Pacific Equatorial Undercurrents (EUC) show that the nighttime deep-cycle turbulence (DCT) in the marginal-instability (MI) layer of the EUC exhibits seasonal variability that can modulate heat transport and sea surface temperature. Large-eddy simulations (LES), spanning a wide range of control parameters, are performed to identify the key processes that influence the turbulent heat flux at multiple time scales ranging from turbulent (minutes to hours) to daily to seasonal. The control parameters include wind stress, convective surface heat flux, shear magnitude, and thickness of the MI layer. In the LES, DCT occurs in discrete bursts during the night, exhibits high temporal variability within a burst, and modulates the mixed layer depth. At the daily time scale, turbulent heat flux generally increases with increasing wind stress, MI-layer shear, or nighttime convection. Convection is found to be important to mixing under weak wind, weak shear conditions. A parameterization for the daily averaged turbulent heat flux is developed from the LES suite to infer the variability of heat flux at the seasonal time scale. The LES-based parameterized heat flux, which takes into account the effects of all control parameters, exhibits a seasonal variability that is similar to the observed heat flux from the χ-pods.

Abstract:Geophysical fluid flows that are stably-stratified in density, like most of the ocean, can be strongly turbulent at small scales as a result of shear instabilities. The resulting mixing controls the vertical transport of heat and tracers that are key to large-scale layering and circulation patterns, including those crucial to Earth's climate. However, the physics of sheared stratified turbulence remain poorly understood due to their extraordinary range of scales and spatio-temporal intermittency. This paper reviews a laboratory model, the stratified inclined duct (SID), which encapsulates these fundamental physics and complexity while permitting precise control and measurements, a sweet spot to stimulate fruitful research. We explain how this exchange flow down a modest slope sustains high levels of energy dissipation and mixing while remaining strongly-stratified, thereby accessing the relevant geophysical parameter regime. Emphasising the role of detailed measurements, we highlight key discoveries and unsolved questions around the transition to turbulence, intermittent dynamics and parameterisations of mixing. Dimensional design guidelines show how the optical measurements of the full three-dimensional flow field could be perfected to extrapolate laboratory results to the tantalisingly close regime of the most intense geophysical stratified turbulence.

Abstract:In the tropical Pacific, weak ventilation and intense microbial respiration at depth give rise to a low dissolved oxygen (O2) environment that is thought to be ventilated primarily by the equatorial current system (ECS). The role of mesoscale eddies and vertical mixing as potential pathways of O2 supply in this region, however, remains poorly known due to sparse observations and coarse model resolution. Using an eddy resolving simulation of ocean circulation and biogeochemistry, we assess the contribution of these processes to the O2 budget balance and find that vertical mixing of O2, which is modulated by the surface wind speed and the vertical shear of the eddying currents, contributes substantially to the replenishment of O2 in the upper equatorial Pacific thermocline, complementing the advective supply of O2 by the ECS and meridional circulation at depth. These transport processes vary seasonally in conjunction with the wind: mixing of O2 into the upper thermocline is strongest during boreal summer and fall when the vertical shear and eddy kinetic energy are intensified. The relationship between eddy activity and the downward mixing of O2 arises from the modulation of equatorial turbulence by Tropical Instability Waves via their impacts on the vertical shear. This interaction of processes across scales sustains a local pathway of O2 delivery into the equatorial Pacific interior and highlights the need for adequate observations and models of turbulent mixing and mesoscale processes for understanding and predicting the fate of the tropical Pacific O2 content in a warmer and more stratified ocean.

Abstract:Using in situ high-frequency data obtained from a new type of float (Navis-SL1) with a thermal engine, this study documents that steep isopycnals result in submesoscale processes during a strong wind event in the western South China Sea. The mixing induced by strong wind promoted the appearance of vertical isopycnals and weakened stratification in the mixed layer. The background isopycnals did not have a traditional frontal structure with a single inclined direction (i.e., a cold dense filament configuration). Submesoscale characteristics induced by the mixed-layer instability (MLI) were found in the mixed layer. By using the parameterization of streamfunction of MLI, two ageostrophic overturning circulation cells formed. In the center of the two cells, the vertical velocity was downward, while it was upwelling on both sides. The horizontal velocity diagnosis showed convergence/divergence at the top/bottom of the mixed layer. The vertical equivalent heat flux induced by MLI was compared with the daily averaged surface net heat flux and was found to have an important impact on the buoyancy budget in the mixed layer.
