Abstract:The Purcell effect describes the modification of the spontaneous decay rate in the presence of electromagnetic media and bodies. In this work, we shed light on the dependencies and magnitude of this effect for chiral materials. Using the framework of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics and Fermi's golden rule, we study a chiral bulk medium with and without local-field corrections, an idealised chiral mirror and a chiral surface. The results imply that the chiral effect is greatest for large transition frequencies, molecules with large optical rotatory strength and media with a strong cross-susceptibility. In the case of a half space, short distances from the molecule to the interface additionally enhance the effect.

Abstract:Integral equation method is applied to analyze the Purcell effect in plasmonic system in this paper. By applying the Fermi's golden rule, the Purcell effect of a quantum emitter can be calculated from the local density of states (LDOS), which can be further expressed by the imaginary part of the Green's function of the whole system. To obtain this Green's function numerically, the layered medium Green's function is utilized to simplify the modeling of planarly layered substrate, where the surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) can be sustained. The metallic nano scatterers are introduced to excite the localized surface plasmons (LSP), and the effect of both is obtained by solving the corresponding integral equation. Numerical results are shown at the end of this paper.

Abstract:On-chip single-photon sources are key components for integrated photonic quantum technologies. Semiconductor quantum dots can exhibit near-ideal single-photon emission, but this can be significantly degraded in on-chip geometries owing to nearby etched surfaces. A long-proposed solution to improve the indistinguishablility is to use the Purcell effect to reduce the radiative lifetime. However, until now only modest Purcell enhancements have been observed. Here we use pulsed resonant excitation to eliminate slow relaxation paths, revealing a highly Purcell-shortened radiative lifetime (22.7 ps) in a waveguide-coupled quantum dot–photonic crystal cavity system. This leads to near-lifetime-limited single-photon emission that retains high indistinguishablility (93.9%) on a timescale in which 20 photons may be emitted. Nearly background-free pulsed resonance fluorescence is achieved under π -pulse excitation, enabling demonstration of an on-chip, on-demand single-photon source with very high potential repetition rates.

Abstract:Recently the photonic golden rule, which predicts that the spontaneous emission rate of an atom depends on the projected local density of states (LDOS), was shown to fail in an optical medium with a linear gain amplifier. We present a classical light-matter theory to fix this widely used spontaneous emission rate, fully recovering the quantum mechanical rate reported in Franke et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 127, 013602 (2021). The corrected classical Purcell factor, for media containing linear amplifiers, is obtained in two different forms, both of which can easily be calculated in any standard classical Maxwell solver. We also derive explicit analytical results in terms of quasinormal modes, which are useful for studying practical cavity structures in an efficient way, including the presence of local field effects for finite-size dipole emitters embedded inside lossy or gain materials (using a real cavity model). Finally, we derive a full classical correspondence from the viewpoint of quantized quasinormal modes in the bad cavity limit. Example numerical calculations are shown for coupled loss-gain microdisk resonators, showing excellent agreement between few mode expansions and full numerical dipole simulations.

Abstract:We study the excitation conditions of the supported field modes, as well as the spontaneous decay property of a two-level quantum emitter coupled to photonic structures containing topological insulators (TIs) and left-handed materials. Within the proper field quantization scheme, the spontaneous decay rates of dipoles with different polarizations are expressed in forms of the Green's functions. We find that in the proposed structure, the variation in the topological magnetoelectric polarizability (TMP) has a deterministic effect on the excitation of different field modes. As the result, the spontaneous decay property of the quantum emitter can be engineered. For a dipole placed in different spatial regions, the spontaneous decay feature indicates a dominant contribution from the waveguide modes, the surface plasmon modes or the free vacuum modes. Moreover, a special kind of the surface plasmon modes displaying asymmetric density of states at the interfaces, becomes legal in the presence of nontrivial TIs. These phenomena manifest the feasibility in controlling dipole emissions via manipulations of the topological magnetoelectric (TME) effect. Our results have potential applications in quantum technologies relied on the accurate control over light-matter interactions.

Abstract:We investigate the population dynamics and the photon emission statistics of the coupled semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) with pulse excitation by using quantum regression theorem and optical Bloch equations. The population of the biexciton state vertical bar b> is close to those of two exciton states (vertical bar x> and vertical bar y>) when the effective input pulse area is about pi. The calculation results reveal that both the probabilities of the cross single photon emission and the correlated photon-pair emission decrease as the input pulse area increases in every period. Abstract:For a system consisting of a quantum emitter coupled near threshold (band edge) to a one-dimensional continuum with a van Hove singularity in the density of states, we demonstrate general conditions such that a characteristic triple-level convergence occurs directly on the threshold as the coupling g is shut off. For small g values the eigenvalue and norm of each of these states can be expanded in a Puiseux expansion in terms of powers of g2/3 , which suggests the influence of a third-order exceptional point. However, in the actual g→0 limit, only two discrete states in fact coalesce as the system can be reduced to a 2×2 Jordan block; the third state instead merges with the continuum. Moreover, the decay width of the resonance state involved in this convergence is significantly enhanced compared to the usual Fermi golden rule, which is consistent with the Purcell effect. However, non-Markovian dynamics due to the branch-point effect are also enhanced near the threshold. Applying a perturbative analysis in terms of the Puiseux expansion that takes into account the threshold influence, we show that the combination of these effects results in quantum emitter decay of the unusual form 1−Ct3/2 on the key timescale during which most of the decay occurs. We then present two conditions that must be satisfied at the threshold for the anomalous exceptional point to occur: the density of states must contain an inverse square-root divergence and the potential must be nonsingular. We further show that when the energy of the quantum emitter is detuned from threshold, the anomalous exceptional point splits into three ordinary exceptional points, two of which appear in the complex-extended parameter space. Abstract:We examine the possible control of the celebrated Purcell effect in cavity quantum electrodynamics. We demonstrate that the presence of an unexcited atom can significantly alter the Purcell decay depending on the strength of coupling of the unexcited atom with the cavity mode though the excited atom has to be weakly coupled for it to be in the Purcell regime. This is distinct from the nonradiative nature of the singlet state which is an entangled state of the two atom system. We present physical interpretation for inhibition as due to interference between two polariton channels of decay. We bring out connection to exceptional points in the cavity QED system as the unexcited atom and cavity mode can produce a second order exceptional point. We further show how two unexcited atoms can create a third order exceptional point leading to inhibition of Purcell effect. We also discuss the case when the Purcell effect can be enhanced.

Abstract:We perform resonant fluorescence lifetime measurements on a nanocavity-coupled erbium ensemble as a function of cavity-laser detuning and pump power. Our measurements reveal an anomalous three-fold suppression of the ensemble Purcell factor at zero cavity detuning and high pump fluence. We capture qualitative aspects of this decay rate suppression using a Tavis-Cummings model of non-interacting spins coupled to a common cavity.

Abstract:We investigate the effect of a waveguide on an emitter spontaneous emission in its vicinity. The impact of various possible orientations of an emitter with respect to the waveguide surface is studied through simulations and compared with experimental demonstration. Quantum emitters are dip coated on waveguides and Purcell enhancement and a decrease in the lifetime of the emitter are observed. This study serves as a proof of concept for the Purcell effect offered by waveguides and helps ineffectively estimate the efficiency of waveguide-based evanescent sensors and quantum photonic applications

Polariton-induced Purcell effects via a reduced semiclassical electrodynamics approach

Abstract:Recent experiments have demonstrated that polariton formation provides a novel strategy for modifying local molecular processes when a large ensemble of molecules is confined within an optical cavity. Herein, a numerical strategy based on coupled Maxwell--Schrödinger equations is examined for simulating local molecular processes in a realistic cavity structure under collective strong coupling. In this approach, only a few molecules, referred to as quantum impurities, are treated quantum mechanically, while the remaining macroscopic molecular layer and the cavity structure are modeled using dielectric functions. When a single electronic two-level system embedded in a Lorentz medium is confined in a two-dimensional Bragg resonator, our numerical simulations reveal a polariton-induced Purcell effect: the radiative decay rate of the quantum impurity is significantly enhanced by the cavity when the impurity frequency matches the polariton frequency, while the rate can sometimes be greatly suppressed when the impurity is near resonance with the bulk molecules forming strong coupling. Additionally, this approach demonstrates that the cavity absorption of light exhibits Rabi-splitting-dependent suppression due to the inclusion of a realistic cavity structure. Our simulations also identify a fundamental limitation of this approach -- an inaccurate description of polariton dephasing rates into dark modes. This arises because the dark-mode degrees of freedom are not explicitly included when most molecules are modeled using dielectric functions. As the polariton-induced Purcell effect alters molecular radiative decay differently from the Purcell effect under weak coupling, this polariton-induced effect may facilitate understanding the origin of polariton-modified photochemistry under electronic strong coupling.

Abstract:The increased decay rate of a two-level system weakly coupled to an optical cavity, known as the Purcell effect, is a cornerstone of cavity QED. However, the effect of cavity coupling is not well understood if the two-level system is replaced by a multi-level interacting system. Motivated by experiments looking to characterise molecular systems via exploiting a cavity interaction, we study a manifestation of the Purcell effect in a bio-inspired photosynthetic dimer. We focus in particular on how molecular vibrational modes, thought to play an important role in photosynthetic exciton transport, impact the system-cavity behaviour in the Purcell regime. We provide a theoretical picture in terms of an effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, which extends the simple picture of a Jaynes-Cummings model to the description of a `multi-level' Purcell effect, where different levels have differing Purcell factors, with effective cooperativities mediated by coherent vibrational interactions.

Abstract:Spontaneous emission can be altered by external electromagnetic environment with the bridge of local density of optical states. Microcavities have been widely integrated to accelerate the irreversible spontaneous decay, known as the Purcell effect. However, the Purcell effect breaks down in the strong coupling regime, where the light-matter interaction is not a perturbation to Fermi's golden rule. Here, it is found that the emission intensity of plasmon-exciton polaritons is asymmetrically dependent on the spectral detuning, confirming the collapse of Purcell effect in strongly coupled systems. Ultrafast nonradiative decays of polaritons play a significant role in revealing the polariton emission intensity. The nonradiative effect is not affected by the coherent energy exchange since final states of nonradiative decays are optically dark and decoupled from Rabi oscillations. Moreover, the nonradiative effect is still valid under intermediate coupling and agrees with the Purcell effect, which suggests its universality at a variety of coupling regimes. This study opens up a successful approach to investigate spontaneous emission in cavity quantum electrodynamics, which is insightful to photonic and opto-electronic applications based on exciton-polaritons.
Interpreting Purcell Enhancement of Non-Hermitian Metasurfaces with Spectral Parameters

Abstract:The Purcell effect describes the enhancement of the spontaneous emission rate of an emitter near a resonant structure. However, evaluating the Purcell factor quantitatively and empirically is difficult due to the difficulties in measuring the electromagnetic nearfield of an optical resonance for calculation of the exact effective modal volume, especially with non-Hermitian resonators. Therefore, we propose a new analytical approach to circumvent the need to measure the nearfield and predict the Purcell enhancement with an analytical model and spectrally measurable parameters. Our proposed model predicts the averaged Purcell enhancement by metasurfaces on a photoluminescence medium, and is verified with experimental measurements and numerical simulations of nanoparticle arrays coupled to a fluorescent thin film. The model directly analyzes the photoluminescence enhancement and extraction efficiency of metasurface, and can be generalized to work with arbitrarily-shaped photoluminescent medium that is coupled to a resonator. This discovery will facilitate optimization of metasurfaces that support open cavity modes for efficient extraction of enhanced luminescence.

Abstract:Standard cavity cooling of atoms or dielectric particles is based on the action of dispersive optical forces in high-finesse cavities. We investigate here a complementary regime characterized by large cavity losses, resembling the standard Doppler cooling technique. For a single two-level emitter a modification of the cooling rate is obtained from the Purcell enhancement of spontaneous emission in the large cooperativity limit. This mechanism is aimed at cooling of quantum emitters without closed transitions, which is the case for molecular systems, where the Purcell effect can mitigate the loss of population from the cooling cycle. We extend our analytical formulation to the many particle case governed by weak individual coupling but exhibiting collective strong Purcell enhancement to a cavity mode.

Abstract:. We have studied the effect of the reading beam on the decay process of the photoinduced second-order susceptibility χ (2) in both the guest-host system (disperse red 1-doped polymethyl methactrylate) and the side-chain system (disperse red 19-functionalized polyimide polymer). Both experimentally and theoretically, we have proved that the reading beam has the erasure effect on the decay process, that is, χ (2) decays faster in the high intensity than in the low intensity of the reading beam. Furthermore, the relationship between the time constant τ B of the slow component of the decay process and the intensity of the reading beam I 1.06 is derived from the theoretical equations, which is fitted well with the experimental results. Based on the fitting parameters, we also compare, quantitatively, the thermal-induced orientational diffusion of trans- and the quantum efficiency of trans-to-cis photoisomerization in the two systems.

Abstract:We study amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) from wavelength-scale composite bodies--complicated arrangements of active and passive media--demonstrating highly directional and tunable radiation patterns, depending strongly on pump conditions, materials, and object shapes. For instance, we show that under large enough gain, $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric dielectric spheres radiate mostly along either active or passive regions, depending on the gain distribution. Our predictions are based on a recently proposed fluctuating volume--current (FVC) formulation of electromagnetic radiation that can handle inhomogeneities in the dielectric and fluctuation statistics of active media, e.g. arising from the presence of non-uniform pump or material properties, which we exploit to demonstrate an approach to modelling ASE in regimes where Purcell effect (PE) has a significant impact on the gain, leading to spatial dispersion and/or changes in power requirements. The nonlinear feedback of PE on the active medium, captured by the Maxwell--Bloch equations but often ignored in linear formulations of ASE, is introduced into our linear framework by a self-consistent renormalization of the (dressed) gain parameters, requiring the solution of a large system of nonlinear equations involving many linear scattering calculations.

Abstract:Parity-time (PT)-symmetry brings various opportunities for electromagnetic field manipulation and light-matter interaction, such as modification of spontaneous emission. However, previous works mainly focused on the behavior of spontaneous emission at exceptional points or in the PT-symmetry situation. Here, we theoretically demonstrate loss-induced Purcell enhancement in PT-broken whispering gallery microcavities. In the PT-broken phase, one of the supermodes decays slowly thereby playing a leading role in spontaneous emission. As the loss increases, the quality factor of this supermode is higher and the mode volume is smaller, so that the Purcell factors will be larger if the emitter is placed near the lossless cavity. Our findings indicate that loss can enhance the interaction between light and matter, which could be applied to single photon emission, non-Hermitian photonic devices, etc.

Abstract:Control of spontaneously emitted light lies at the heart of quantum optics. It is essential for diverse applications ranging from miniature lasers and light-emitting diodes1,2,3,4,5, to single-photon sources for quantum information6,7,8, and to solar energy harvesting9. To explore such new quantum optics applications, a suitably tailored dielectric environment is required in which the vacuum fluctuations that control spontaneous emission can be manipulated10,11. Photonic crystals provide such an environment: they strongly modify the vacuum fluctuations, causing the decay of emitted light to be accelerated or slowed down12,13, to reveal unusual statistics14, or to be completely inhibited in the ideal case of a photonic bandgap1,15. Here we study spontaneous emission from semiconductor quantum dots embedded in inverse opal photonic crystals16. We show that the spectral distribution and time-dependent decay of light emitted from excitons confined in the quantum dots are controlled by the host photonic crystal. Modified emission is observed over large frequency bandwidths of 10%, orders of magnitude larger than reported for resonant optical microcavities17. Both inhibited and enhanced decay rates are observed depending on the optical emission frequency, and they are controlled by the crystals' lattice parameter. Our experimental results provide a basis for all-solid-state dynamic control of optical quantum systems18.

Abstract:A novel method is proposed to measure the Purcell effect by observing the current through a semiconductor quantum dot embedded inside a microcavity. The stationary current is shown to be altered if one varies the cavity length. For the double-dot system, the stationary current is found to show the interference feature (superradiance) as the inter-dot distance is varied. The amplitude of oscillation can be increased by incorporating the system into a microcavity. Furthermore, the current is suppressed if the dot distance is small compared to the wavelength of the emitted photon. This photon trapping phenomenon generates the entangled state and may be used to control the emission of single photons at predetermined times.
