Abstract:We investigate geodesic orbits and manifolds for metrics associated with Schwarzschild geometry, considering space and time curvatures separately. For `a-temporal' space, we solve a central geodesic orbit equation in terms of elliptic integrals. The intrinsic geometry of a two-sided equatorial plane corresponds to that of a full Flamm's paraboloid. Two kinds of geodesics emerge. Both kinds may or may not encircle the hole region any number of times, crossing themselves correspondingly. Regular geodesics reach a periastron greater than the $r_S$ Schwarzschild radius, thus remaining confined to a half of Flamm's paraboloid. Singular or $s$-geodesics tangentially reach the $r_S$ circle. These $s$-geodesics must then be regarded as funneling through the `belt' of the full Flamm's paraboloid. Infinitely many geodesics can possibly be drawn between any two points, but they must be of specific regular or singular types. A precise classification can be made in terms of impact parameters. Geodesic structure and completeness is conveyed by computer-generated figures depicting either Schwarzschild equatorial plane or Flamm's paraboloid. For the `curved-time' metric, devoid of any spatial curvature, geodesic orbits have the same apsides as in Schwarzschild space-time. We focus on null geodesics in particular. For the limit of light grazing the sun, asymptotic `spatial bending' and `time bending' become essentially equal, adding up to the total light deflection of 1.75 arc-seconds predicted by general relativity. However, for a much closer approach of the periastron to $r_S$, `time bending' largely exceeds `spatial bending' of light, while their sum remains substantially below that of Schwarzschild space-time.

Abstract:We review the solution space for the field equations of Einstein's General Relativity for various static, spherically symmetric spacetimes. We consider the vacuum case, represented by the Schwarzschild black hole; the de Sitter-Schwarzschild geometry, which includes a cosmological constant; the Reissner-Nordström geometry, which accounts for the presence of charge. Additionally we consider the homogenenous and anisotropic locally rotational Bianchi II spacetime in the vacuum. Our analysis reveals that the field equations for these scenarios share a common three-dimensional group of point transformations, with the generators being the elements of the D⊗sT2 Lie algebra, known as the semidirect product of dilations and translations in the plane. Due to this algebraic property the field equations for the aforementioned gravitational models can be expressed in the equivalent form of the null geodesic equations for conformally flat geometries. Consequently, the solution space for the field equations is common, and it is the solution space for the free particle in a flat space. This approach open new directions on the construction of analytic solutions in gravitational physics and cosmology.

Abstract:We discuss how to construct the full Schwarzschild (Kruskal-Szekeres) spacetime in one swoop by using the bundle of orthonormal Lorentz frames and the Einstein equation without the use of coordinates. We never have to write down the Kruskal-Szekeres or an equivalent form of the metric.

Abstract:We derive the general solution to the coupled Einstein and Dirac field equations in static and hyperplane-symmetric spacetime of arbitrary dimension including a cosmological constant of either sign. As a result, only a massful Dirac field couples via the Einstein equations to spacetime, and in the massless case the Dirac field is required to fulfill appropriate constraints in order to eliminate off-diagonal components of the energy-momentum tensor. We also give explicit expressions for curvature invariants including the Ricci scalar and the Kretschmann scalar, indicating physical singularities. Moreover, we reduce the general solution of the geodesic equation to quadratures.

Static sphere observers and geodesics in Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime

Abstract:We analyze null- and spacelike radial geodesics in Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime connecting two conjugate static sphere observers, i.e. free-falling observers at a fixed radius in between the two horizons. We explicitly determine the changes in the causal structure with respect to these natural observers as a result of the inward bending of the black hole singularity, as well as the outward bending of asymptotic infinity. Notably, the inward and outward bending changes as a function of the black hole mass, first increasing towards a maximum and then decreasing to vanish in the extreme Nariai limit. For a generic mass of the black hole this implies the existence of finite size (temporal) windows for the presence of symmetric radial geodesics between the static sphere observers probing the interior region of the black hole, as well as the exterior de Sitter region. We determine the size of the interior (black hole) and exterior (de Sitter) temporal windows in $4$, $5$ and $6$ spacetime dimensions, finding that they are equal in $D=5$, and compute the proper lengths of the symmetric radial geodesics. We comment on the implications for information exchange and the potential role of the symmetric radial geodesics in a geodesic approximation of static sphere correlators in Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime.

Modified Schwarzschild spacetime in Ricci-flat brane

Abstract:Considering an ansatz for $1+3+n$ dimensional static spacetime with uniform $n$-branes stacked in three-dimensional rotationally symmetric space, we found different classes of vacuum solutions of Einstein field equations. We analyzed these solutions through the Newtonian limit, Kretschmann scalar, and conserved energy from Landau--Lifshitz stress-energy pseudotensor. This revealed unusual physical properties for a class of solutions with nontrivial extension of the Schwarzschild spacetime with extra dimensions. Positive conserved energy is associated with repulsive gravity and physical singularity on the horizon, while negative conserved energy implies gravitational attraction and naked singularity. This sets the Schwarzschild solution in a broader context and provides new possible testing grounds for general relativity.

Non-spherical sources of Schwarzschild space-time

Abstract:While it is known that any spherical fluid distribution may only source the spherically symmetric Schwarzschild space-time, the inverse is not true. Thus, in this manuscript, we find exact axially symmetric and static fluid (interior) solutions to Einstein equations, which match smoothly on the boundary surface to the Schwarzschild (exterior) space-time, even though the fluid distribution is not endowed with spherical symmetry. The solutions are obtained by using the general approach outlined in [1], and satisfy the usual requirements imposed to any physically admissible interior solution. A discussion about the physical and geometric properties of the source is presented. The relativistic multipole moments (RMM) are explicitly calculated in terms of the physical variables, allowing to prove that spherical sources can only match to the Schwarzschild space-time. The complexity of the source is evaluated through the complexity factors. It is shown that there is only one independent complexity factor, as in the spherically symmetric case.

Abstract:We give a pedagogical introduction to static spherically symmetric solutions in models of New GR, both explaining the basics and showing how all such vacuum solutions can be obtained in elementary functions. In doing so, we coherently introduce the full landscape of these modified teleparallel spacetimes, and find a few special cases. The equations of motion are turned into a very nice and compact form by using the Levi-Civita divergence of the torsion-conjugate; and generalised Bianchi identities are briefly discussed. Another important point we make is that a convenient choice of the radial variable might be instrumental for success of similar studies in other modified gravity models.

The GR limit of these solutions is examined through the use of Cartan invariants via the Cartan-Karlhede algorithm and is additionally supported by analysis of scalar polynomial invariants. It is determined that the appearance of horizons in these spacetimes depends primarily on one of the parameters, $n$, of the family of solutions. In particular, expansion-free surfaces appear which, for a subset of parameter values, define additional surfaces distinct from the standard surfaces (e.g., apparent horizons) identified in previous work. These surfaces in static spherically symmetric Brans-Dicke solutions was previously shown to correspond to the Schwarzschild horizon in general relativity when an appropriate limit exists between the two theories. We show additionally that other geometrically defined horizons exist for these cases, and identify all solutions for which the corresponding general relativity limit is not a Schwarzschild one, yet still contains horizons. The identification of some of these other surfaces was noted in previous work and is characterized invariantly in this work. In the case of the family of dynamical Brans-Dicke solutions, we identify similar invariantly defined surfaces as in the static case and present an invariant characterization of their geometries. Through the analysis of the Cartan invariants, we determine which members of these families of solutions are locally equivalent, through the use of the Cartan-Karlhede algorithm. In addition, we identify black hole surfaces, naked singularities, and wormholes with the Cartan invariants. The aim of this work is to demonstrate the usefulness of Cartan invariants for describing properties of exact solutions.

An Extendable Galaxy Number Count Model

Abstract:I review galaxy number count models and present ncmod, an extendable and general purpose model for comparing and interpreting the results of field galaxy survey data. I develop techniques and software for converting the results of a survey done in one filter into another filter, for direct comparison with other surveys. Comparison of the data from surveys which differ greatly in wavelength coverage or sensitivity is of necessity model-dependent, but comparison between similar surveys can be done in a relatively model-independent way. I extrapolate existing number counts into the ultraviolet and thermal infrared. The model is used to predict the results of future space missions, including STIS and NICMOS on HST, ISO, SIRTF and NGST.

A Generally Covariant Model of Spacetime as a 4-Brane in 4+1 Flat Dimensions

Abstract:We construct a simple model of a closed FLRW spacetime by starting from a flat five dimensional scalar field space with a quartic potential. The action contains no curvature terms. The spacetime metric is uniquely determined from the dynamical equations of the metric tensor. An SO(4) invariant ansatz for the scalar fields is shown to lead to a linearly expanding universe provided that the cosmological constant is negative.

Abstract:We study a class of static spherically symmetric vacuum solutions in modified teleparallel gravity solving the field equations for a specific model Ansatz, requiring the torsion scalar T to be constant. We discuss the models falling in this class. After some general considerations, we provide and investigate local solutions in the form of black holes and traversable wormholes as well as configurations that can match the anomalous rotation curves of galaxies.

Positivity Conditions for Generalised Schwarzschild Space-Times

Abstract:We analyse the impact of positivity conditions on static spherically symmetric deformations of the Schwarzschild space-time. The metric is taken to satisfy, at least asymptotically, the Einstein equation in the presence of a non-trivial stress-energy tensor, on which we impose various physicality conditions. We systematically study and compare the impact of these conditions on the space-time deformations. The universal nature of our findings applies to both classical and quantum metric deformations with and without event horizons. We further discuss minimal realisations of the asymptotic stress energy tensor in terms of physical fields. Finally, we illustrate our results by discussing concrete models of quantum black holes.

Abstract:We present a mathematical model for a physical theory that is compatible with Einstein's Special Relativity Theory. Our model consists of three pseudo-complex dimensions, representing three real dimensions of space, dual to what could be interpreted as three real dimensions of time. We use the term "pseudo-complex", since the mathematical object representing each paired space-time coordinate in our model, is a two-dimensional space over $\mathbb{R}$ whose multiplication makes it into a non-commutative non-associative algebra. We have been unable to find records of this very elementary mathematical object in the literature.

Abstract:A reformulation of the Schwarzschild solution of the linearized Einstein field equations in post-Riemannian Finsler spacetime is derived. The solution is constructed in three stages: the exterior solution, the event-horizon solution and the interior solution. It is shown that the exterior solution is asymptotically similar to Newtonian gravity at large distances implying that Newtonian gravity is a low energy approximation of the solution. Application of Eddington-Finklestein coordinates is shown to reproduce the results obtained from standard general relativity at the event horizon. Further application of Kruskal-Szekeres coordinates reveals that the interior solution contains maximally extensible geodesics.

Abstract:Spherically symmetric solutions for f(T) gravity models are derived by the so-called Noether symmetry approach. First, we present a full set of Noether symmetries for some minisuperspace models. Then, we compute analytical solutions and find that spherically symmetric solutions in f(T) gravity can be recast in terms of Schwarzschild-like solutions modified by a distortion function depending on a characteristic radius. The obtained solutions are more general than those obtained by the usual solution methods.

Abstract:We analyze the transformation of a very broad class of metrics that can be expressed in terms of static coordinates. Starting from a general ansatz, we obtain a relation for the parameters in which one can impose further symmetries or restrictions. One of the simplest restrictions leads to FLRW cases, while transforming from the initial static to other static-type coordinates can lead to near horizon coordinates, Wheeler–Regge, and isotropic coordinates, among others. As less restrictive cases, we show an indirect route for obtaining Kruskal–Szekeres within this approach, as well as Lemaître coordinates. We use Schwarzschild spacetime as a prototype for testing the procedure in individual cases. However, application to other spacetimes, such as de-Sitter, Reissner–Nordström, and Schwarzschild de Sitter, can be readily generalized.
