Abstract:<p>Discussions on the evolutionary process and mechanism of social-ecological landscape resilience play an important role in maintaining the sustainable provision of landscape services. However, studies on the evolutionary process and mechanism of social-ecological landscapes at the micro-scale have received relatively little attention. The purpose of this research is to analyze the spatio-temporal evolution of social-ecological landscape resilience at the micro-level in Gaoqu Township in Mizhi County, China. A three-dimensional (ecosystem, social system, and production system) indicator was constructed to quantitatively evaluate the social-ecological landscape resilience. The results showed that (1) the spatio-temporal variation in the three subsystems' resilience was extensive from 2012 to 2018. The ecosystem resilience was distributed in the northeast-southwest direction, which was consistent with the distribution of gullies. The social system resilience was spatially high in the northwest and low in the southeast. The production system resilience was low in the middle and high in the peripheral regions. The resilience values of the ecosystem, social system and production system increased by 0.127, 0.122 and 0.101, respectively. (2) The spatio-temporal differentiation of the social-ecological landscape resilience was also significant, and its resilience value increased by 11.44%, which showed a spatial pattern with a low center and high surroundings. (3) Finally, based on the status and trend of the social-ecological landscape resilience, 20 villages in the region can be divided into predominantly advancing areas, predominantly stable areas, predominantly attenuation areas, emerging advancing areas, and sensitive-vulnerable areas. This study can provide the spatial guidance for differentiated sustainable development in the Loess hill and gully region based on the local conditions of the social-ecological landscapes.</p>

Transient social-ecological dynamics reveal signals of decoupling in a highly disturbed Anthropocene landscape

Abstract:Understanding the transient dynamics of interlinked social-ecological systems (SES) is imperative for assessing sustainability in the Anthropocene. However, how to identify critical transitions in real-world SES remains a formidable challenge. In this study, we present an evolutionary framework to characterize these dynamics over an extended historical timeline. Our approach leverages multidecadal rates of change in socioeconomic data, paleoenvironmental, and cutting-edge sedimentary ancient DNA records from China's Yangtze River Delta, one of the most densely populated and intensively modified landscapes on Earth. Our analysis reveals two significant social-ecological transitions characterized by contrasting interactions and feedback spanning several centuries. Initially, the regional SES exhibited a loosely connected and ecologically sustainable regime. Nevertheless, starting in the 1950s, an increasingly interconnected regime emerged, ultimately resulting in the crossing of tipping points and an unprecedented acceleration in soil erosion, water eutrophication, and ecosystem degradation. Remarkably, the second transition occurring around the 2000s, featured a notable decoupling of socioeconomic development from ecoenvironmental degradation. This decoupling phenomenon signifies a more desirable reconfiguration of the regional SES, furnishing essential insights not only for the Yangtze River Basin but also for regions worldwide grappling with similar sustainability challenges. Our extensive multidecadal empirical investigation underscores the value of coevolutionary approaches in understanding and addressing social-ecological system dynamics.
Spatial-temporal pattern and formation mechanism of county urbanization on the Chinese Loess Plateau

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">Urbanization is a comprehensive and complex socioeconomic phenomenon that plays an influential role in promoting global socioeconomic development. The Loess Plateau region is an important part of the China's ecological security pattern, and occupies an important position in the implementation of China's new-type urbanization strategy and the realization of the urban dream. The characteristics of the staged changes and regional differentiation of urbanization in the area from 1990 to 2018 were studied with focus on regions and subregions by selecting 341 county-level administrative units on the Chinese Loess Plateau as the research area, and employing partition analysis and geographic detector methods. This revealed the formation mechanism of the spatial differentiation pattern of urbanization on the Loess Plateau. We found that the urbanization of the Loess Plateau, previously in a slow growth phase, entered the accelerated development phase, presenting a macro pattern of high rates of urbanization in central and eastern areas and low rates in western areas. The formation of the regional differentiation patterns of urbanization on the Loess Plateau were the combined results of natural geographical and socioeconomic factors. Among these factors, the interaction of any two factors had a stronger impact on regional urbanization patterns than a single factor, which was specifically manifested as nonlinear or bi-factor enhancement effects. The findings of this paper may provide a theoretical reference and scientific basis for the scientific promotion of healthy urbanization on the Chinese Loess Plateau and the ecologically fragile areas of developing countries around the world.</p>

Abstract:Social-ecological systems provide a comprehensive scientific framework for understanding the complex processes and interactions between natural and human systems. However, system analysis with assumptions of reducibility, linear trade-offs or synergies and separability, and methods to detect social-ecological system transitions from time series are not sufficient to deal with the challenges of sustainable development. The interpretation of the spatial pattern is a potentially powerful choice for understanding social-ecological system transitions. Therefore, this study mapped social-ecological system archetypes by combining dominant function identification and K-means clustering methods. Results showed that Food Production Space, Economic Development Space and Ecological Service Space constituted the main archetypes of social-ecological systems, which covered about 8.7%, 1% and 78.1% of China respectively in 2018. Ecological-Food Space, Food-Economic Space, and Economic-Ecological Space reflected the key areas and hotspots for social-ecological system transitions, characterized by Economic Development Space expansion, Food Production Space reconstruction and Ecological Service Space contraction. Between 1990 and 2018, about 10.6% of the social-ecological system underwent transformation, mainly manifested in the transition of Food Production Space into Food-Economic Space (4.37 Mha) and Ecological-Food Space (8.34 Mha), and in the transition of Food-Economic Space to Food Production Space (9.16 Mha) and Economic Development Space (4.19 Mha). The pathways of social-ecological system transitions were mainly affected by factors such as institution, policy, capital, location, technology, population, cognition, and culture. These factors drove social-ecological system transitions through the mechanisms of community crisis response and individual interest induction. It suggested that sustainable development efforts should be focused on limiting the increase in driving factors that may weaken the critical feedback process, thereby maintaining the stability of the desired social-ecological systems.

Abstract:Abstract The evolution process of socio–ecological systems from 1990 to 2020 in the Tianzhu Tibetan Autonomous County, located in the National Key Ecological Function Area of western China, was analyzed quantitatively based on resilience theory and methodology combined with catastrophe theory and adaptive cycle theory, through field investigation, questionnaires and interviews, social data collection and remote sensing data analysis. The results show that the coordinated development of socio–ecological systems has made great progress in recent decades in the study area, and the coordinated development of social systems and ecosystems has a high degree of coupling and a strong connection. Changes in ecosystem resilience regularly surpassed changes in the social system, indicating the significant impact and success of ecological protection policies and projects in recent decades. In future, improvements in the social sub-system will be the key to developing the socio–ecological system in the study area. Enhancing social sub-system resiliency, implementing transformational development and green industry development, and transforming and realizing ecological product values are important topics for further investigation in the study area. Substantial changes in policy, production, population and climate change are needed to promote the evolution of socio–ecological systems. Stable national policies are crucial for improving people's livelihoods and providing ecological protections.

Abstract:The Yellow River catchment in central China is one of the cradles of Chinese civilization. Since the mid-Holocene, the runoff and erosion in this area, which includes the Chinese Loess Plateau, have been affected by anthropogenic land cover changes (ALCC) and Asian monsoon climatic changes. We applied the reconstructions of Holocene climate (temperature, precipitation, insolation and CO2 concentration) and KK10 land cover change scenarios, to determine the evolution of discharge and sediment flux in the Beiluo River in the Chinese Loess Plateau using the Landlab landscape evolution model combined with a module that considers the impact of vegetation on water balance and soil erodibility. The modeling results show that climate change and ALCC resulted in large fluctuations of both discharge and sediment fluxes since the mid-Holocene. For the evolution of discharge, climate change is the dominant controlling factor, and land-use change has a secondary effect. Comparison of results of modeling scenario's with and without land-use change shows that it contributes less than 5% to changes of runoff during the time period before 1000 BC. However, the impact of land-use change is significant for sediment load, especially since 5000 BC. Thus, our results provide evidence for a much earlier start of the human impact on soil erosion and fluvial processes compared to earlier studies. Our modeling also shows that the incorporation of eco-hydrological processes in landscape evolution modeling is important for the accurate simulation of runoff and discharge in response to climate and land-use change, at least in a semi-arid environment.

Abstract:The Wei River catchment in the southern part of the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) is one of the centers of the agricultural revolution in China. The area has experienced intense land use changes since ∼6000 BCE, which makes it an ideal place to study the response of fluvial systems to past anthropogenic land cover change (ALCC). We apply a numerical landscape evolution model that combines the Landlab landscape evolution model with an evapotranspiration model to investigate the direct and indirect effects of ALCC on hydrological and morphological processes in the Wei River catchment since the mid-Holocene. The results show that ALCC has not only led to changes in discharge and sediment load in the catchment but also affected their sensitivity to climate change. When the proportion of agricultural land area exceeded 50 % (around 1000 BCE), the sensitivity of discharge and sediment yield to climate change increased abruptly indicating a regime change in the fluvial catchment. This was associated with a large sediment pulse in the lower reaches. The model simulation results also show a link between human settlement, ALCC and floodplain development: changes in agricultural land use led to downstream sediment accumulation and floodplain development, which in turn resulted in further spatial expansion of agriculture and human settlement.

Abstract:Variations and regional differences in land surface processes during the Anthropocene have directly impacted local economic development and social stability. Nevertheless, little is known about the historical erosion effects and human–environment interactions at annual and decadal scales on the central Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) over the past 200 years, when human activities and annual sediment discharge both reached historical peaks. Located in the northcentral hilly–gully and southcentral plateau–gully regions, respectively, the Jingbian and Heshui landslide‐dammed reservoirs were ideal settings to reconstruct the erosion flux and precipitation over A.D. 1850–2000 due to vertical stacking of interannual couplets. During this period, the mean annual specific sediment yield reached 1.17 × 104 t/(km2 a) in the Jingbian catchment (precipitation threshold of 30 mm), while it reached 1.13 × 104 t/(km2 a) in the Heshui catchment (precipitation threshold of 40 mm) according to sediment yield with frustum and extrapolation of historical precipitation. Interannual El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events were deemed a primary climatic factor inducing soil erosion over the central CLP. This should remind decision‐makers that it is necessary to prevent large‐scale floods and severe erosion before future ENSO events. Changes in population, policies, and human activities also affected land surface processes on the central CLP during 1850–2000. In addition, the results revealed that abandoned farmlands in the southcentral regions with 600 mm and more precipitation had a strong ecological resilience, while this was weak in the northcentral drier region. These findings imply that future ecological restoration of the central CLP should consider the ecological resilience of farmlands that have been recently abandoned due to urbanization. These novel results provide new insights into regional soil and water management under China's development agenda of ‘Ecological Conservation and High‐quality Development of the Yellow River Basin’. Asynchronized effects of soil erosion driven by interannual precipitation and human activities in the northcentral hilly–gully and southcentral plateau–gully regions at the Chinese Loess Plateau over A.D. 1850‐2000.

Abstract:This paper is a result of interdisciplinary research between natural and social science.Evidences of more rapid development in the loess plateau than in the Yangtze delta in ancient time are given.It is suggested that this might be due to the fact that Holocene climate warming had different effect on the development of the loess plateau and the Yangtze delta. Finally,causes of three great population migration of the Han People from north China to the lower Yangtze valley are elucidated.The ro1e of three great population migration in rapid economic development of the Yangtze delta since the 7th century is also briefly discussed.
INTEGRATED CONSERVATION SOLUTIONS FOR THE ENDANGERED LOESS PLATEAU OF NORTHWEST CHINA

Abstract:Since Sorensen first proposed the definition of ecotope in 1936, the stratified feature and distinct management of ecosystems has received extensive consideration worldwide. We chose the Loess Plateau of China as a case study to quantitatively establish a potential model system entitled the Stratified Strategies for Ecosystem Management (SSEM). The Loess Plateau is geographically dominated by hilly and gully topography. Intense rainfall during summer erodes the bare topsoil from the hill tops to the valleys, which leads to serious soil and water loss, land degradation and social poverty. Since the 1980s, four big national programs have been initiated and implemented to reduce the erosion and improve livelihoods, including the Grain for Green Program (GFGP), the Natural Forest Conservation Program (NFCP), the Terraced Field Construction Program (TFCP), and the Integrated Rain-harvesting Agriculture (IRHA). Our statistical analysis shows that these strategies have played positive roles in harmonizing ecosystem conservation with human development. Vegetation cover has been increased by 27.0% and total farmland area has been reduced by 23.6% at four typical sites. Soil organic carbon has increased by 1.59 g/kg, while annual topsoil loss has been reduced by 650 Kt. In addition, terracing has significantly improved soil water storage, sediment trapping and soil quality on the Loess Plateau. On the other hand, the IRHA system in the valley areas has brought about a significant increase in the productivity of summer crops. Based on the IRHA model, the grass-crop rotation system has led to considerable improvement in agricultural cropping patterns, and promoted modern agricultural and animal husbandry systems. The population of farmers growing crops has been reduced 20% but the regional GDP has increased 800%. Human productive activities have tended to transfer from the tops of the hills to the side of the hills and valleys. We therefore propose an integrated model of SSEM, which provides a novel strategy to conserve endangered ecosystems in semiarid and arid areas.
The Temporal and Spatial Characteristics of Ecological Security Pattern in the Loess Plateau, China

Abstract:As a typical ecologically fragile area, the ecological security of the Loess Plateau has been seriously threatened. Ecological security patterns (ESP) have gradually become an effective method for protecting ecological security and supporting the management and sustainable development of ecosystems. Therefore, this study constructed a novel ESP based on ecological "function–structure", utilizing minimum cumulative resistance (MCR) to identify ecological source areas and corridors. Additionally, time scales were introduced into the ESP, allowing for a comprehensive analysis of the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of ecological security in the Loess Plateau. The study revealed that the number of ecological sources decreased from southeast to northwest, with 27, 41, and 77 sources covering total areas of 4263.810 km2, 18,566.034 km2, and 113,209.595 km2 from 2000 to 2020, respectively. Similarly, the number and complexity of ecological corridors increased over the same time period, with 64, 85, and 105 corridors totaling lengths of 4579.326 km, 6526.996 km, and 7015.174 km, respectively. The expansion of ecological security zones was mainly observed in the southeast part of the Loess Plateau. Overall, the ESP of the Loess Plateau saw an improvement, with the southeastern part showing better ecological security than the northwestern part. These findings hold great significance for regional ecological security evaluations and are crucial for promoting ecological management and healthy development in the Loess Plateau.

Evolution of Holocene Alluvial Landscapes in the Northeastern Songshan Region, Central China: Chronology, Models and Socio-Economic Impact

Abstract:A recent suggestion of the existence of an enormous ancient waterbody in Central China had been associated with the intensifying water management that led to the rise of early states. However, the evolution of regional alluvial landscapes remains unclear. Through intensive geoarchaeological surveys and careful field examination of typical sedimentary sequences, we reconstructed Late Pleistocene-Holocene landscapes in the northeastern Songshan Region and identified three distinctive models of landscape evolution. In the loess hills and tablelands areas, rivers were characterized by the large-scale alluvial aggradation during the terminal Late Pleistocene. Following a slight river incision during the Early Holocene, a pronounced alluvial aggradation resumed throughout the Middle Holocene. This gave way to another episode of river downcutting during the Late Holocene. The platform-type plains area witnessed a similar process of landscape evolution. However, the amplitude of the Early Holocene river-incision was smaller, whilst the large-scale Middle Holocene aggradation filled up the valleys, which also led to the formation of buried terraces. The eastern plains area was marked by continuous alluvial-lacustrine aggradation from the Late Pleistocene onwards. Many lakes, marshes and wetlands were formed during the Middle Holocene river aggradation. These waterbodies were separated by the high-elevation landforms, creating a mosaic-like aquatic landscape. The Late Pleistocene-Holocene landscape supported mixed farming of rice and millets from the Neolithic to Bronze Age. After 4000 BP, with another event of river incision, the wetlands shrank, and the extensive area of drylands emerged in the east plains. This change coincided with the emergence of large-scale urban centers in the region.
The Influence of Loess Cave Development Upon Landslides and Geomorphologic Evolution: A Case Study from the Northwest Loess Plateau, China

Abstract:Loess caves, landslides, collapses, bank erosion and soil erosion, which are independently and interactively shaping the modern loess landscape, are widely distributed across the Chinese Loess Plateau. The study area is located in a small watershed in Huining County, Gansu Province, which is one of the areas with the strongest development of loess caves across the Loess Plateau. This area is an ideal site for studying geological hazards and geomorphic evolution on the Loess Plateau. Seventeen landslides and 176 loess caves with a density of 887 units/km(2) were investigated with a UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) and mapped by GIS (geographic information system). Using high-resolution UAV images and topographic data, we carried out an interpretation of loess caves, bank erosion and landslides; studied the spatial distribution and developmental patterns of loess caves, landform morphology and the relationship between loess caves and landslides based on GIS spatial analysis, mathematical statistics and field surveys; and analyzed the influence of loess miaotopography on slope landforms. Finally, six typical evolutionary models of soil erosion-loess cave development-landslide occurrence-barrier darn formation are preliminarily proposed: the primary slope stage, early cave stage, accelerated cave stage, cave connecting stage, landslide creeping stage, and landslide-dam forming stage. Abstract:Being the world's largest developing country and having a vast rural population and large swaths of rural areas, China has experienced complex historical periods. However, few studies provide general summaries of spatial evolution of rural settlements, particularly the evolutionary contexts of complex historical processes. Considering that China's society, economy, and spaces in urban and rural areas have entered a phase of rapid restructuring in response to economic globalisation and the new urbanisation in recent years, exploring and summarising the general evolutionary path of the spatial structure of rural settlements over a long period of time constitute a particularly important research objective. This study examined Sunan region, an ideal representative epitomising the modern history of China, as a case area, results found that the evolutionary process of spatial structure of rural settlements could be categorised as discrete and isomorphic, centripetal and hierarchical, branching and dual, and diversified network system follow the historical periodisation. Rural spatial structure has experienced three moments of transformation under the trend of urban-rural mutual interaction, thus mechanism is driven by internal and external forces under economic and social change over different periods, evidently in contemporary era. Although rural settlements have manifested diversified developmental patterns in China, theories and methods that are applicable to domestic situations are still urgently needed to summarise the evolutionary mechanism and to provide vital channels for the national strategy of rural revitalisation in the process of urban rural integrated development.
Distinguishing Trajectories and Drivers of Vegetated Ecosystems in China's Loess Plateau

Abstract:Terrestrial ecosystems can exhibit various behaviors in response to climate change and human activities. Nonlinear and abrupt shifts in ecosystems are particularly important as they indicate substantial modifications in ecosystem structure and function, posing a threat to the provision of ecosystem services. Here we distinguish between linear, curvilinear, and abrupt shifts in ecosystem productivity from 2000 to 2020 in China's Loess Plateau. We utilize spatial Random Forest models to analyze the driving factors behind these change patterns. Our findings indicate that 84.1% of the ecosystems experienced a positive change in plant productivity, while a small proportion (2.5%) exhibited a negative change. Abrupt shifts are prevalent in both positive and negative changes in ecosystem productivity, with negative changes often manifesting as abrupt shifts (79.3%). Negative changes in plant productivity, particularly the negative abrupt shifts, are primarily associated with human activities characterized by increased nighttime light and urbanization. Land conversion to forest is linked to a curvilinear trajectory in plant productivity, characterized by nonlinear changes with acceleration. Higher water availability and a wetter environment are more likely to promote positive changes in plant productivity. Moderate warming trends contribute to abrupt positive changes in plant productivity, while high warming trends are associated with increased negative abrupt and curvilinear changes. We highlight the importance of accounting for diverse change behaviors in ecosystems for the development of targeted conservation and restoration measures.

Abstract:The Loess Plateau region is characterized by fragmented habitats and ecological vulnerability. Analyzing the changes in land use and ecological risk within the region is of great significance for promoting high-quality development of the Loess Plateau. The study utilized land use data from 2000, 2010, and 2020 in the Loess Plateau region to assess the spatio-temporal variation in land use patterns and landscape ecological risks, aiming to provide valuable references and decision support for ecological risk management and sustainable development in the area. The results indicated that the main land use types in the region are grassland and cropland. From 2000 to 2020, forest, grassland, and water areas increased by 1.39 × 106, 6.25 × 105, and 7.09 × 104 ha, respectively. The impervious area increased rapidly, growing from 9.77 × 104 ha in 2000 to 1.85 × 106 ha in 2020. The cropland decreased by 1.82 × 106 ha from 2000 to 2020, with 4.61 × 105, 4.95 × 106, and 8.91 × 105 ha of cropland converted to forest, grassland, and impervious area, respectively. The fragmentation of the ecological landscape in the region has decreased, and the diversity and richness of landscape types have increased. The fragmentation of cropland, forest, and grassland has decreased, and landscape patches have become more concentrated. High-value areas of landscape ecological risk in the region show a trend of continuous aggregation, altering the dispersion pattern of high-risk areas. Currently, high-risk areas of landscape ecology in the Loess Plateau region are mainly concentrated in northern Shaanxi and some areas along the Yellow River, such as Yulin, Yan’an, Ordos, and others. Currently, the ecological environment remains a bottleneck constraining the high-quality development of the Loess Plateau. It is necessary to persist in coordinated governance and ecological engineering construction, and improving the quality of ecological environment is a prerequisite for consolidating the social foundation and leading the high-quality development of the ecological industry on the Loess Plateau.

Abstract:The Loess Plateau is one of the most fragile ecological regions in China due to its shortage of water resources and severe soil erosion. The rapid development of urbanization and the implementation of the project of returning farmland to forest (grass) have caused the ecological environment of the region to be strongly impacted by human activities. It is necessary to investigate the spatial and temporal evolution characteristics of ecosystem services and trade-off/synergy relationships on the Loess Plateau, to achieve scientific management of ecological services and sustainable development of the region. This study quantitatively assesses three ecosystem services of water yield (WY), carbon storage (CS), and soil conservation (SC) on the Loess Plateau under different scenarios from 2000 to 2030 by using the InVEST and PLUS models. Further, the trade-off and synergistic relationships among the ecosystem services have been investigated by Spearman correlation analysis. The results showed that the land-use differences are more obvious under different policy scenarios, with a sharp expansion of constructed land, a gradual increase of forest land, and a continuous decrease of arable land in the Loess Plateau from 2000 to 2020; the water yield and soil conservation increase from 2000 to 2020, and the carbon storage shows an opposite trend. The soil conservation and carbon storage scenarios are the best under the ecological conservation scenario in 2030, while the water yield service is the best under the economic development scenario. There is a synergistic relationship between CS and SC, while there is a trade-off relationship between CS and WY. In addition, there are significant trade-off effects between SC and WY. These results can support guiding land-use management and ecological restoration.
