Abstract:For cyclic conjugated structures, erratic computational results have been obtained with Hartree-Fock (HF) molecular orbital (MO) methods as well as density functional theory (DFT) with large HF-exchange contributions. In this work, the reasons for this unreliability are explored. Extensive computations on [18]annulene and related compounds highlight the pitfalls to be avoided and the due diligence required for such computational investigations. In particular, a careful examination of the MO singlet-stability eigenvalues is recommended. The appearance of negative eigenvalues is not (necessarily) problematic, but near-zero (positive or negative) eigenvalues can lead to dramatic errors in vibrational frequencies and related properties. DFT approaches with a lower HF admixture generally appear more robust in this regard for the description of benzenoid structures, although they may exaggerate the tendency toward planarity and C-C bond-equalization. For the iconic [18]annulene, the results support a nonplanar equilibrium structure. The density-fitted frozen natural orbital coupled-cluster singles and doubles with perturbative triples [DF-FNO CCSD(T)] method of electron correlation with an aug-pVQZ/aug-pVTZ basis set places the <i>C</i>2 global minimum 1.1 kcal mol-1 below the <i>D</i>6<i>h</i> stationary point.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the paper attempts to solve This article aims to explore the structural problems of [18]annulene, especially the challenges in its computational methods. Specifically, the article focuses on the following points: 1. **Reliability of computational methods**: - Early use of the Hartree - Fock (HF) molecular orbital (MO) method and density functional theory (DFT) with a large HF exchange contribution yielded inconsistent results. These methods showed unreliability when dealing with [18]annulene and its related compounds. - Through extensive calculations, the author explored the reasons for the unreliability of these methods and recommended more reliable computational methods. 2. **Analysis of molecular orbital stability**: - The author suggests carefully examining the eigenvalues of singlet stability. A negative eigenvalue is not necessarily a problem, but a positive or negative eigenvalue close to zero may lead to significant errors in vibrational frequencies and related properties. - By analyzing the molecular orbital stability, the author hopes to find ways to avoid these errors. 3. **Equilibrium structure of [18]annulene**: - The author used multiple computational methods (such as DF - FNO - CCSD(T)) to determine the global minimum - energy structure of [18]annulene. The results show that the equilibrium structure of [18]annulene is non - planar, and the C2 - symmetric structure is approximately 1.1 kcal/mol lower than the D6h - symmetric structure. - The author also discussed the energy differences between different symmetric structures and the changes in geometric parameters to verify the reliability of the computational results. 4. **Abnormal phenomena in vibrational frequencies**: - The author found some abnormal vibrational frequencies, for example, an imaginary frequency of 10,679i cm⁻¹ appeared in the D6h structure, which is obviously unreasonable. - By analyzing the sources of these abnormal frequencies, the author explored possible theoretical challenges, such as RHF - RHF instability and SOJT effect. 5. **Structural studies of related compounds**: - In addition to [18]annulene, the author also studied other related benzene - like compounds (such as benzene, kekulene, coronene, tetra - acetylene, etc.) to understand the electronic structures and geometric characteristics of these compounds. ### Summary Through detailed calculations and analyses, this article aims to solve the challenges in the structural calculations of [18]annulene and provide more reliable methods to describe the electronic structures and geometric characteristics of such compounds. Particular attention is paid to how to avoid errors in calculations and determine the non - planar equilibrium structure of [18]annulene. These studies are not only of great significance for understanding [18]annulene itself but also provide valuable references for the research of similar compounds.
