Effects of numerical implementations of the impenetrability condition on non-linear Stokes flow: applications to ice dynamics

Abstract:The basal sliding of glaciers and ice sheets can constitute a large part of the total observed ice velocity, in particular in dynamically active areas. It is therefore important to accurately represent this process in numerical models. The condition that the sliding velocity should be tangential to the bed is realized by imposing an impenetrability condition at the base. We study the, in glaciological literature used, numerical implementations of the impenetrability condition for non-linear Stokes flow with Navier's slip on the boundary. Using the finite element method, we enforce impenetrability by: a local rotation of the coordinate system (strong method), a Lagrange multiplier method enforcing zero average flow across each facet (weak method) and an approximative method that uses the pressure variable as a Lagrange multiplier for both incompressibility and impenetrability. An analysis of the latter shows that it relaxes the incompressibility constraint, but enforces impenetrability approximately if the pressure is close to the normal component of the stress at the bed. Comparing the methods numerically using a method of manufactured solutions unexpectedly leads to similar convergence results. However, we find that, for more realistic cases, in areas of high sliding or varying topography the velocity field simulated by the approximative method differs from that of the other methods by $\sim 1\%$ (two-dimensional flow) and $> 5\%$ when compared to the strong method (three-dimensional flow). In this study the strong method, which is the most commonly used in numerical ice sheet models, emerges as the preferred method due to its stable properties (compared to the weak method in three dimensions) and ability to well enforce the impenetrability condition.

Dynamic process simulation of a glacier on Qilian Mountain based on a thermo-mechanically coupled model

Abstract:As a climate-sensitive region, the glacier on Qilian Mountain is changing rapidly, and climate change can rapidly increase glacier flow instabilities through movement and ablation. We used the thermo-mechanically-coupled-with-full-Stokes code with the Elmer method to perform a steady-state diagnostic simulation of the Shuiguan River Glacier No. 3 (SG3) in the eastern Qilian Mountains, and to predict and analyze future changes of the glacier in combination with historical elevation data. The results showed that the average ice temperature was above −1.5 °C, that the hydrological process inside and under the ice was complex, and that the high ice temperature at the bottom would make the glacier fragile in the future. Because of the small thickness of the glacier and the small stress in the ice, the stress of the ice flow caused no great damage to the glacier. The development of cracks and melting holes under the ice was mainly caused by the melting of the glacier. Prognostic simulation under two climate models (RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5) revealed that the area of SG3 changed evenly at first, and then retreated at an accelerated rate, whereas the volume consistently presented a state of accelerated reduction. Although our study confirmed that climatic warming was the main reason for glacial retreat, it was also found that the altitude of the glacier, the topography of the bedrock under the ice and the accumulation area would greatly affect the response of the glacier to climatic change. For these reasons, our study also profoundly elucidated why different glaciers with the same scale and under the same climatic conditions could exhibit different changes in area and terminal position.

Abstract:We implement a data assimilation framework for integrating ice surface and terminus position observations into a numerical ice-flow model. The model uses the well-known shallow shelf approximation (SSA) coupled to a level set method to capture ice motion and changes in the glacier geometry. The level set method explicitly tracks the evolving ice–atmosphere and ice–ocean boundaries for a marine outlet glacier. We use an Ensemble Transform Kalman Filter to assimilate observations of ice surface elevation and lateral ice extent by updating the level set function that describes the ice interface. Numerical experiments on an idealized marine-terminating glacier demonstrate the effectiveness of our data assimilation approach for tracking seasonal and multi-year glacier advance and retreat cycles. The model is also applied to simulate Helheim Glacier, a major tidewater-terminating glacier of the Greenland Ice Sheet that has experienced a recent history of rapid retreat. By assimilating observations from remotely-sensed surface elevation profiles we are able to more accurately track the migrating glacier terminus and glacier surface changes. These results support the use of data assimilation methodologies for obtaining more accurate predictions of short-term ice sheet dynamics.

Abstract:The surface energy budget drives the melt of the snow cover and glacier ice and its computation is thus of crucial importance in numerical models. This surface energy budget is the result of various surface energy fluxes, which depend on the input meteorological variables and surface temperature; of heat conduction towards the interior of the snow/ice; and potentially of surface melting if the melt temperature is reached. The surface temperature and melt rate of a snowpack or ice are thus driven by coupled processes. In addition, these energy fluxes are non-linear with respect to the surface temperature, making their numerical treatment challenging. To handle this complexity, some of the current numerical models tend to rely on a sequential treatment of the involved physical processes, in which surface fluxes, heat conduction, and melting are treated with some degree of decoupling. Similarly, some models do not explicitly define a surface temperature and rather use the temperature of the internal point closest to the surface instead. While these kinds of approaches simplify the implementation and increase the modularity of models, they can also introduce several problems, such as instabilities and mesh sensitivity. Here, we present a numerical methodology to treat the surface and internal energy budgets of snowpacks and glaciers in a tightly coupled manner, including potential surface melting when the melt temperature is reached. Specific care is provided to ensure that the proposed numerical scheme is as fast and robust as classical numerical treatment of the surface energy budget. Comparisons based on simple test cases show that the proposed methodology yields smaller errors for almost all time steps and mesh sizes considered and does not suffer from numerical instabilities, contrary to some classical treatments.

Abstract:Long‐term records of the flow patterns and dynamics of surge‐type glaciers improve our understanding of their underlying dynamic processes, and are critical to better resolve their contribution to a changing cryosphere. We adapt a modeling approach designed to emulate glacier surging and fold kinematics using the full Stokes ice‐flow model Elmer/Ice to simulate surging of the Dusty Glacier, located in the St. Elias Mountains, Canada. We combine distributed mass‐balance and numerical ice‐flow models to reconstruct the fold kinematics of the 2001–2003 surge of the Dusty Glacier by comparing model results to Landsat‐7 and Sentinel‐2 imagery, and assess the sensitivity of centennial‐scale modeled glacier structure to different mass balance and sliding parameterizations. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using the approach to reconstruct the surface structure kinematics of a surge‐type glacier in nature, highlighting its potential application to other surge‐type glaciers and regions.

A potential energy conserving finite element method for turbulent variable density flow: application to glacier-fjord circulation

Abstract:We introduce a continuous Galerkin finite element discretization of the non-hydrostatic Boussinesq approximation of the Navier-Stokes equations, suitable for various applications such as coastal ocean dynamics and ice-ocean interactions, among others. In particular, we introduce a consistent modification of the gravity force term which enhances conservation properties for Galerkin methods without strictly enforcing the divergence-free condition. We show that this modification results in a sharp energy estimate, including both kinetic and potential energy. Additionally, we propose a new, symmetric, tensor-based viscosity operator that is especially suitable for modeling turbulence in stratified flow. The viscosity coefficients are constructed using a residual-based shock-capturing method and the method conserves angular momentum and dissipates kinetic energy. We validate our proposed method through numerical tests and use it to model the ocean circulation and basal melting beneath the ice tongue of the Ryder Glacier and the adjacent Sherard Osborn fjord in two dimensions on a fully unstructured mesh. Our results compare favorably with a standard numerical ocean model, showing better resolved turbulent flow features and reduced artificial diffusion.

Abstract:Geophysical flows like rock–ice avalanches have high mobility and destructive potential, causing global loss of life and property. Water, often from melted ice, significantly impacts their mobility. Experimental investigations of debris friction in a rotating drum with melting ice show reduced friction due to water. However, experimental limitations hinder extensive testing. Employing a numerical model can overcome this, facilitating the study of various scenarios in understanding such calamitous geophysical flows. In the current work, we numerically replicate the rotating drum experiment using Eulerian–Lagrangian CFD–DEM coupling. We focus on the initial and final states, considering a gravel and ice mixture (B12-070 ). We don't model the ice melting; rather, we inject equivalent water over time. Our simulation captures changes in the frictional behavior of the gravel bulk and flow height profile, closely aligning with experimental observations.

Abstract:Abstract. Glaciers play an important role in high-mountain hydrology. While changing glacier areas are considered of highest importance for the understanding of future changes in runoff, glaciers are often only poorly represented in hydrological models. Most importantly, the direct coupling between the simulated glacier mass balances and changing glacier areas needs feasible solutions. The use of a complex glacier model is often not possible due to data and computational limitations. The Δh parameterization is a simple approach to consider the spatial variation of glacier thickness and area changes. Here, we describe a conceptual implementation of the Δh parameterization in the semi-distributed hydrological model HBV-light, which also allows for the representation of glacier advance phases and for comparison between the different versions of the implementation. The coupled glacio-hydrological simulation approach, which could also be implemented in many other semi-distributed hydrological models, is illustrated based on an example application.

Terminus Geometry as Main Control on Outlet Glacier Velocity

Abstract:Ice flow velocities close to the terminus of major outlet glaciers of the Greenland Ice Sheet can vary on the time scale of years to hours. Such flow speed variations can be explained as the reaction to changes in terminus geometry with help of a 3D full-Stokes ice flow model. Starting from an initial steady state geometry, parts of an initially 7 km long floating terminus are removed. Flow velocity increases everywhere up to 4 km upstream of the grounding line, and complete removal of the floating terminus leads to a doubling of flow speed. The model results conclusively show that the observed velocity variations of outlet glaciers is dominated by the terminus geometry. Since terminus geometry is mainly controlled by calving processes and melting under the floating portion, changing ocean conditions most probably have triggered the recent geometry and velocity variations of Greenland outlet glaciers.

Diagnosing changes in glacier hydrology from physical principles using a hydrological model with snow redistribution, sublimation, firnification and energy balance ablation algorithms

Abstract:A comprehensive glacier hydrology model was developed within the Cold Regions Hydrological Modelling platform (CRHM) to include modules representing wind flow over complex terrain, blowing snow redistribution and sublimation by wind, snow redistribution by avalanches, solar irradiance to sloping surfaces, surface sublimation, glacier mass balance and runoff, meltwater and streamflow routing. The physically based glacier hydrology model created from these modules in CRHM was applied to simulate the hydrology of the instrumented, glacierized and rapidly deglaciating Peyto and Athabasca glacier research basins in the Canadian Rockies without calibration of parameters from streamflow. It was tested against observed albedo, point and aggregated glacier mass balance, and streamflow and found to successfully simulate surface albedo, snow redistribution, snow and glacier accumulation and ablation, mass balance and streamflow discharge, both when driven by in-situ observations and reanalysis forcing data. Long term modelling results indicate that the increases in discharge from the 1960s to the present are due to increased glacier ice melt contributions, despite declining precipitation and snow melt.

Abstract:Gravimetric measurements allow monitoring mass transport in the Earth system and one example is temporal variations in the global water cycle including the cryosphere. Coupling gravity observations to the underlying processes requires modeling of the relevant mass elements. When observing the gravity field from space (i.e., by satellites), point mass models or simple spherical surface layers (mascons) are a reasonable choice. However, for terrestrial observations taken right on the surface of the relevant masses, precise modeling of the geometry of those mass elements and the related gravitational effects becomes crucial for the quality of the modeling and the correct interpretation of the results. In this study, two different modeling techniques are investigated, the right rectangular prism and the general polyhedron. Both approximations provide the possibility to analytically calculate the corresponding gravitational signal. Although modeling in terms of polyhedrons is numerically more complex and less efficient, the representation of the actual surface is superior as the inclined polyhedral surface fits much better to the actual topographic surface than the step function implied by rectangular prisms with horizontal top plane. The case study presented here is related to the gravimetric mass balance of a mountain glacier (Vernagtferner in the Ötz valley, Austria) where on the one hand high resolution digital terrain models (DTM of resolution 1 m × 1 m) are available, while on the other hand, the accuracy requirements are very high (on the level of 10 −7 m/s 2 , i.e., 10 μGal). We evaluate first and second order derivatives of the gravitational potential induced by the melting of ice masses between epochs 2009 and 2016 at gravity sites on and off the actual glacier body. Furthermore, the relation of ground surface slope to the differences between the modeling approaches is investigated for a small part of the DTM, containing a variety of different slope regimes. Besides the original grid spacing, denser and coarser grids are also evaluated in order to examine the relation of the considered DTM resolution to the modeling differences. The modeling choice, the location of the computation points and the morphology of the mass distribution are the main factors that determine the quality of the results. The comparison of the two methods for the original 1 m resolution, provides differences up to 2.9 μGal for the vertical component of the attraction V z , 9.1 μGal/m for the gradient V zx , 4.6 μGal/m for V yz and 17.1 μGal/m for V zz . Coarser grid resolutions increase these values significantly, up to 500 μGal at specific locations, while grids denser than the 1 m resolution decrease them for about 48%.

Abstract:Abstract Calving glaciers respond quickly to atmospheric variability through ice dynamic adjustment. Particularly, single weather extremes may cause changes in ice-flow velocity and terminus position. Occasionally, this can lead to substantial event-driven mass loss at the ice front. We examine changes in terminus position, ice-flow velocity, and calving flux at the grounded lacustrine Schiaparelli Glacier in the Cordillera Darwin using geo-referenced time-lapse camera images and remote sensing data (Sentinel-1) from 2015 to 2022. Lake-level records, lake discharge measurements, and a coupled energy and mass balance model provide insight into the subglacial water discharge. We use downscaled reanalysis data (ERA-5) to identify climate extremes and track land-falling atmospheric rivers to investigate the ice-dynamic response on possible atmospheric drivers. Meltwater controls seasonal variations in ice-flow velocity, with an efficient subglacial drainage system developing during the warm season and propagating up-glacier. Calving accounts for 4.2% of the ice loss. Throughout the year, warm spells, wet spells, and landfalling atmospheric rivers promote calving. The progressive thinning of the ice destabilizes the terminus position, highlighting the positive feedback between glacier thinning, near-terminus ice-flow acceleration, and calving flux.

Abstract:Abstract We present a shape optimization algorithm to estimate the ice thickness distribution within a two-dimensional, non-sliding mountain glacier, given a transient surface geometry and a mass-balance distribution. The approach is based on the minimization of the surface topography misfit at the end of the glacier's evolution in the shallow ice approximation of ice flow. Neither filtering of the surface topography where its gradient vanishes nor interpolation of the basal shear stress is involved. Novelty of the presented shape optimization algorithm is the use of surface topography and mass-balance only within a time-dependent Lagrangian approach for moving-boundary glaciers. On real-world inspired geometries, it is shown to produce estimations of even better quality in smaller time than the recently proposed steady and transient inverse methods. A sensitivity analysis completes the study and evinces the method's higher susceptibility to perturbations in the surface topography than in surface mass-balance or rate factor.

Geomorphological Evolution of the Terminus Area of the Hailuogou Glacier, Southeastern Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:Hailuogou (HLG) Glacier, a rapidly receding temperate glacier in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau, has been observed to lose mass partly through ice frontal mechanical ablation (i.e., ice collapse). These events are difficult to quantify using current satellite-based monitoring techniques due to their small scale and frequent nature. However, recent developments in Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAV) have provided a possible approach to track their spatiotemporal variation and their impact on the geomorphological evolution of the glacier terminus area. Here, we present analysis from UAV surveys conducted over eight field campaigns to the HLG Glacier, providing evidence of glacier change between October 2017 and November 2020. Structure from Motion with Multi-View Stereo (SfM-MVS) was applied to produce multi-temporal Digital Surface Models (DSMs) and orthophoto mosaics, from which geomorphical maps and DEMs of Difference (DoDs) were derived to quantify glacier changes. These analyses reveal that the glacier terminus retreated 132.1 m over the period of analysis, and that in the area specifically affected by collapsing, it retreated 236.4 m. Overall the volume lost was of the order of 184.5 ± 10.29×104 m3, within which the volume change due to observed collapsing events comprises approximately 28%. We show that ice volume changes at the terminus due to a single ice collapse event may exceed the interannual level of volume change, and the daily volume of ice loss due to ice calving exceeds the seasonal and interannual level by a factor of ~2.5 and 4. Our results suggest that the evolution of the HLG Glacier terminus is dominantly controlled by the frontal ice-water interactions. If the future evolution of glaciers such as HLG Glacier is to be robustly predicted, the contribution of mechanical ablation should be accounted for by numerical models.

Abstract:Basal shear stress on hard‐bedded glaciers results from normal stress against bed roughness, which depends on basal water pressure and cavity size. These quantities are related in a steady state but are expected to behave differently under rapid changes in water input, which may lead to a transient frictional response not captured by existing friction laws. Here, we investigate transient friction using Global Positioning System vertical displacement and horizontal velocity observations, basal water pressure measurements, and cavitation model predictions during rain‐induced speed‐up events at Glacier d'Argentière, French Alps. We observe up to a threefold increase in horizontal surface velocity, spatially migrating at rates consistent with subglacial flow drainage, and associated with surface uplift and increased water pressure. We show that frictional changes are mainly driven by changes in water pressure at nearly constant cavity size. We propose a generalized friction law capable of capturing observations in both the transient and steady‐state regimes.

Large-eddy Simulations of the Atmospheric Boundary Layer over an Alpine Glacier: Impact of Synoptic Flow Direction and Governing Processes

Abstract:The mass balance of mountain glaciers is of interest for several applications (local hydrology or climate projections), and turbulent fluxes can be an important contributor to glacier surface mass balance during strong melting events. The underlying complex terrain leads to spatial heterogeneity and non-stationarity of turbulent fluxes. Due to the contribution of thermally-induced flows and gravity waves, exchange mechanisms are fully three-dimensional, instead of only vertical. Additionally, glaciers have their own distinct microclimate, governed by a down-glacier katabatic wind, which protects the glacier ice and interacts with the surrounding flows on multiple scales. In this study, we perform large-eddy simulations with the WRF model with dx=48 m to gain insight on the boundary-layer processes over an Alpine valley glacier, the Hintereisferner (HEF). We choose two case studies from a measurement campaign (August 2018) with different synoptic wind directions (South-West and North-West). Model evaluation with an array of eddy-covariance stations on the glacier tongue and surroundings reveals that WRF is able to simulate the general glacier boundary-layer structure. Under southwesterly airflow, the down-glacier wind is supported by the South-Western synoptic wind direction, a stable boundary layer is present over the ice surface, and local processes govern the turbulence kinetic energy production. Under northwesterly airflow, a cross-glacier valley flow and a breaking gravity wave lead strong turbulent mixing and to the subsequent erosion of the glacier boundary layer. Stationarity analyses of the sensible heat flux suggest non-stationary behaviour for both case study days, while non-stationarity is highest on the NW day during the gravity-wave event. These results suggest that the synoptic wind direction has, in addition to upstream topography and the atmospheric stability, a strong impact on whether a local glacier boundary layer can form or not, influencing whether a glacier is able to maintain its own microclimate.

Prediction of alpine glacier sliding instabilities: a new hope

Abstract:Mechanical and sliding instabilities are the two processes which may lead to breaking off events of large ice masses. Mechanical instabilities mainly affect unbalanced cold hanging glaciers. For the latter case, a prediction could be achieved based on data of surface velocities and seismic activity. The case of sliding instabilities is more problematic. This phenomenon occurs on temperate glacier tongues. Such instabilities are strongly affected by the subglacial hydrology: melt water may cause (i) a lubrication of the bed and (ii) a decrease of the effective pressure and consequently a decrease of basal friction. Available data from Allalingletscher (Valais) indicate that the glacier tongue experienced an active phase during 2-3 weeks with enhanced basal motion in late summer in most years. In order to scrutinize in more detail the processes governing the sliding instabilities, a numerical model developed to investigate gravitational instabilities in heterogeneous media was applied to Allalingletscher. This model enables to account for various geometric configurations, interaction between sliding and tension cracking and water flow at the bedrock. We could show that both a critical geometrical configuration of the glacier tongue and the existence of a distributed drainage network were the main causes of this catastrophic break-off. Moreover, the analysis of the modeling results diagnose the phenomenon of recoupling of the glacier to its bed as a potential new precursory sign announcing the final break-off. This model casts a gleam of hope for a better understanding of the ultimate rupture of such glacier sliding instabilities.
