Abstract:Bioelectronics have gained substantial research attention owing to their potential applications in health monitoring and diagnose, and greatly promoted the development of biomedicine. Recently, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) hydrogels have arose as a promising candidate for the next-generation bioelectronic interface due to its high-conductivity, versatility, flexibility and biocompatibility. In this review, we highlight the recent advances of PEDOT:PSS hydrogels, including the gelation methods and modification strategies, and summarize their wide applications in different type of sensors and tissue engineering in detail. We expect that this work will provide valuable information regarding the functionalizations and applications of PEDOT:PSS hydrogels.

Abstract:Abstract:: Bioelectronic medicine is a multidisciplinary field that combines molecular medicine, neurology, engineering, and computer science to design devices for diagnosing and treating diseases. The advancements in bioelectronic medicine can improve the precision and personalization of illness treatment. Bioelectronic medicine can produce, suppress, and measure electrical activity in excitable tissue. Bioelectronic devices modify specific neural circuits using electrons rather than pharmaceuticals and use bioelectronic processes to regulate the biological processes underlining various diseases. This promotes the potential to address the underlying causes of illnesses, reduce adverse effects, and lower costs compared to conventional medication. The current review presents different important aspects of bioelectronic medicines with recent advancements. The area of bioelectronic medicine has a lot of potential for treating diseases, enabling non-invasive therapeutic intervention by regulating brain impulses. Bioelectronic medicine uses electricity to control biological processes, treat illnesses, or regain lost capability. These new classes of medicines are designed by the technological developments in the detection and regulation of electrical signaling methods in the nervous system. Peripheral nervous system regulates a wide range of processes in chronic diseases; it involves implanting small devices onto specific peripheral nerves, which read and regulate the brain signaling patterns to achieve therapeutic effects specific to the signal capacity of a particular organ. The potential for bioelectronic medicine field is vast, as it investigates for treatment of various diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, hypertension, paralysis, chronic illnesses, blindness, etc.

Abstract:<p>The rapid development of bioelectronics has lead to the emergence of versatile biorelated architectures for information processing systems, sensors, actuators, and wearable devices. In recent years, 2D materials beyond graphene have been demonstrated to be essential bioelectronic device components owing to their merits of atomic thickness, high transparency, large specific area, unique electrical/optical properties, and good biocompatibility. Herein, the recent advances in the bioelectronic applications of 2D materials beyond graphene are reviewed and their physicochemical properties, biocompatibility, synthesis, and processing methods are described. Moreover, the design strategies, working mechanisms, and performances of various bioelectronic devices based on these materials are summarized and the perspectives and challenges of this research field are highlighted. Thus, this review is expected to inspire new insights and technical advances for future research.</p>

Abstract:Bioelectronics, an emerging field with the mutual penetration of biological systems and electronic sciences, allows the quantitative analysis of complicated biosignals together with the dynamic regulation of fateful biological functions. In this area, the development of conductive materials with elaborate micro/nanostructures has been of great significance to the improvement of high-performance bioelectronic devices. Thus, here, a comprehensive and up-to-date summary of relevant research studies on the fabrication and properties of conductive materials with micro/nanostructures and their promising applications and future opportunities in bioelectronic applications is presented. In addition, a critical analysis of the current opportunities and challenges regarding the future developments of conductive materials with elaborate micro/nanostructures for bioelectronic applications is also presented.

Abstract:Semiconductor nanowires represent powerful building blocks for next generation bioelectronics given their attractive properties, including nanometer-scale footprint comparable to subcellular structures and bio-molecules, configurable in nonstandard device geometries readily interfaced with biological systems, high surface-to-volume ratios, fast signal responses, and minimum consumption of energy. In this review article, we summarize recent progress in the field of nanowire bioelectronics with a focus primarily on silicon nanowire field-effect transistor biosensors. First, the synthesis and assembly of semiconductor nanowires will be described, including the basics of nanowire FETs crucial to their configuration as biosensors. Second, we will introduce and review recent results in nanowire bioelectronics for biomedical applications ranging from label-free sensing of biomolecules, to extracellular and intracellular electrophysiological recording.

Abstract:The continuous pursuit for a better quality of life promotes continuous advancements in intelligent technology.Flexible wearable and implantable bioelectronics have emerged as an innovative complement to rigid material-based electronic devices[1-3].Due to their distinct advantages in terms of ductile,ultrathin,and biocompatible features,these elastic and soft bioelectronic devices can be seamlessly mounted onto various real or artificial tissues and organs.They offer numerous applications in continuous health monitoring[4,5],human-machine interfaces[6-8],and therapeutic inter-ventions[9-11].These devices can dynamically track their surroundings,effectively bridging the gap among humans,machines,and real or virtual spaces.Typically,these devices monitor physical,chemical,and electrophysiological infor-mation based on piezoresistive,capacitive,piezoelectric,or triboelectric principles.To construct these high-performance multifunctional bioelectronic devices,diverse processing methods combined with emerging versatile functional mate-rials have been developed,enabling the formation of active components,interconnections,and hierarchical structures[12,13].

Abstract:Metal-based nanomaterials have a wide range of applications in energy conversion, catalysis, bioimaging, and sensors. In our review, we mainly introduce metal nanomaterials-based electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) biosensors in medical healthcare, environmental monitoring, and food safety instructively, with collecting and analyzing the current achievement of predecessors. In general, metal nanomaterials-based EIS biosensors can be divided into four components, in which bioreceptors and metal nanomaterials transducers are vital for designs. Bioreceptors and metal nanomaterials determine the feasibility, specificity, sensitivity and simplicity of manufacturing and operations. With the demonstration and discussion of bioreceptors and metal nanomaterials of biosensors in different fields, our review aims to assist brief acknowledgement of current state-of-the-art achievement and provide our insights for the future development.

Abstract:Nano-bioelectronics, which blend the precision of nanotechnology with the complexity of biological systems, are evolving with innovations such as silicon nanowires, carbon nanotubes, and graphene. These elements serve applications from biochemical sensing to brain-machine interfacing. This review examines nano-bioelectronics' role in advancing biomedical interventions and discusses their potential in environmental monitoring, agricultural productivity, energy efficiency, and creative fields. The field is transitioning from molecular to ecosystem-level applications, with research exploring complex cellular mechanisms and communication. This fosters understanding of biological interactions at various levels, such as suggesting transformative approaches for ecosystem management and food security. Future research is expected to focus on refining nano-bioelectronic devices for integration with biological systems and on scalable manufacturing to broaden their reach and functionality.

Abstract:Cell-based electrochemical biosensors have contributed tremendously to the fields of biology, medicine, chemistry, pharmacology, and environmental science. With electrochemical transducers and whole cells as the recognition elements, these biosensors provide new horizons for biosensing and life science research. This review focuses on the research accomplishments on this topic over the last three years, and is divided into three sections according to the types of cellular responses. Our aim is to highlight how simple and sensitive electrochemical methods can be coupled with cells by virtue of the integration of interface control, nanotechnology and genetic engineering to generate new enabling technologies. Some specific examples to demonstrate how these sensors are useful in medicinal chemistry and drug design have also been discussed. It is hoped that this review can provide inspiration for the development of fast, selective, sensitive, and convenient detection and diagnosis platforms.

Abstract:Cellular heterogeneity poses a major challenge for tumor theranostics, requiring high-resolution intercellular bioanalysis strategies. Over the past decades, the advantages of electrochemical analysis, such as high sensitivity, good spatio-temporal resolution, and ease of use, have made it the preferred method to uncover cellular differences. To inspire more creative research, herein, we highlight seminal works in electrochemical techniques for biomolecule analysis and bioimaging. Specifically, micro/nano-electrode-based electrochemical techniques enable real-time quantitative analysis of electroactive substances relevant to life processes in the micro-nanostructure of cells and tissues. Nanopore-based technique plays a vital role in biosensing by utilizing nanoscale pores to achieve high-precision detection and analysis of biomolecules with exceptional sensitivity and single-molecule resolution. Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) technology is utilized for real-time monitoring of the behavior and features of individual cancer cells, enabling observation of their dynamic processes due to its capability of providing high-resolution and highly sensitive bioimaging of cells. Particularly, scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) and scanning ion conductance microscopy (SICM) which are widely used in real-time observation of cell surface biological processes and three-dimensional imaging of micro-nano structures, such as metabolic activity, ion channel activity, and cell morphology are introduced in this review. Furthermore, the expansion of the scope of cellular electrochemistry research by innovative functionalized electrodes and electrochemical imaging models and strategies to address future challenges and potential applications is also discussed in this review.

Abstract:The last decade has witnessed remarkable advancements in bioelectronics, ushering in a new era of wearable and implantable devices for drug delivery. By utilizing miniaturized system design and/or flexible materials, bioelectronics illustrates ideal integration with target organs and tissues, making them ideal platforms for localized drug delivery. Furthermore, the development of electrically assisted drug delivery systems has enhanced the efficiency and safety of therapeutic administration, particularly for the macromolecules that encounter additional challenges in penetrating biological barriers. In this review, a concise overview of recent progress in bioelectronic devices for in vivo localized drug delivery, with highlights on the latest trends in device design, working principles, and their corresponding functionalities, is provided. The reported systems based on their targeted delivery locations as wearable systems, ingestible systems, and implantable systems are categorized. Each category is introduced in detail by highlighting the special requirements for devices and the corresponding solutions. The remaining challenges in this field and future directions are also discussed.

Abstract:The electrochemical biosensors are a class of biosensors which convert biological information such as analyte concentration that is a biological recognition element (biochemical receptor) into current or voltage. Electrochemical biosensors depict propitious diagnostic technology which can detect biomarkers in body fluids such as sweat, blood, feces, or urine. Combinations of suitable immobilization techniques with effective transducers give rise to an efficient biosensor. They have been employed in the food industry, medical sciences, defense, studying plant biology, etc. While sensing complex structures and entities, a large data is obtained, and it becomes difficult to manually interpret all the data. Machine learning helps in interpreting large sensing data. In the case of biosensors, the presence of impurity affects the performance of the sensor and machine learning helps in removing signals obtained from the contaminants to obtain a high sensitivity. In this review, we discuss different types of biosensors along with their applications and the benefits of machine learning. This is followed by a discussion on the challenges, missing gaps in the knowledge, and solutions in the field of electrochemical biosensors. This review aims to serve as a valuable resource for scientists and engineers entering the interdisciplinary field of electrochemical biosensors. Furthermore, this review provides insight into the type of electrochemical biosensors, their applications, the importance of machine learning (ML) in biosensing, and challenges and future outlook.

Abstract:Biomolecular electronics is a rapidly growing multidisciplinary field that combines biology, nanoscience, and engineering to bridge the two important fields of life sciences and molecular electronics. Proteins are remarkable for their ability to recognize molecules and transport electrons, making the integration of proteins into electronic devices a long sought-after goal and leading to the emergence of the field of protein-based bioelectronics, also known as proteotronics. This field seeks to design and create new biomolecular electronic platforms that allow for the understanding and manipulation of protein-mediated electronic charge transport and related functional applications. In recent decades, there have been numerous reports on protein-based bioelectronics using a variety of nano-gapped electrical devices and techniques at the single molecular level, which are not achievable with conventional ensemble approaches. This review focuses on recent advances in physical electron transport mechanisms, device fabrication methodologies, and various applications in protein-based bioelectronics. We discuss the most recent progress of the single or few protein-bridged electrical junction fabrication strategies, summarise the work on fundamental and functional applications of protein bioelectronics that enable high and dynamic electron transport, and highlight future perspectives and challenges that still need to be addressed. We believe that this specific review will stimulate the interdisciplinary research of topics related to protein-related bioelectronics, and open up new possibilities for single-molecule biophysics and biomedicine.

Abstract:The continued advancement of organic electronic technology will establish organic electrochemical transistors as pivotal instruments in the field of biological detection. Here, we present a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art technology and advancements in the use of organic electrochemical transistors as biosensors. This review provides an in-depth analysis of the diverse modification materials, methods, and mechanisms utilized in organic electrochemical transistor-structured biosensors (OETBs) for the selective detection of a wide range of target analyte encompassing electroactive species, electro-inactive species, and cancer cells. Recent advances in OETBs for use in sensing systems and wearable and implantable applications are also briefly introduced. Finally, challenges and opportunities in the field are discussed.

Abstract:With a long history in research, bioelectrochemistry has emerged as a hot spot in the development of implantable biosensors with desired selectivity, sensitivity and spatiotemporal resolution for accurate analysis of electroinactive species in vivo. To catalyze electrode reactions (oxidation or reduction) of target analytes, enzymes are employed as the efficient bioelectrocatalysts immobilized on the electrodes. In bioelectrochemistry, the biggest challenge is the interfacial electron transfer between the redox active centers of enzymes and electrode surfaces. Besides, enzymatic electrodes are prone to inhibition and inactivation by environmental factors (co-substrates, inhibitors, pH, etc.). Rational design of the electrode surface/interface is necessitated to fulfill the requirements of in vivo applications. This mini review covers the recent and representative progress on interface engineering to enable bioelectrochemistry for in vivo analysis with an emphasis on heterogeneous electron transfer, oxygen dependence and microenvironment tolerance of bioelectrodes and self-powered electrochemical biosensors as well.
