Fabrication of AgI/Ce-2MI Z-scheme Heterojunction for Enhanced Photoreduction of Cr(VI) under Visible Light Irradiation

Abstract:Proper design and successful synthesis of photocatalysts with efficient interfacial charge transfer, strong redox capabilities, and strong environmental applications are critical. Herein, a novel Z-scheme heterojunction AgI/Ce2MI nanocomposite with redox-retaining properties was successfully prepared by a simple precipitation method. Compared with AgI and Ce-2MI, the efficiency of the optimized Z-scheme AgI/Ce-2MI composites in photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) in water within 75 min could exceed 90%. The reduction rate of AgI/Ce-2MI to Cr (VI) was 0.0277 min-1, which was 2.6 times and 6.8 times that of AgI and Ce-2MI, respectively. In addition, the cycle performance of AgI/Ce-2MI under different pH conditions was compared, and it was found that under the condition of pH= 2, its five-time catalytic activity stability showed good performance. Moreover, the enhancement process of reactive oxygen species & BULL;Oz and & BULL;OH were further verified by active radical capture experiment and ESR. Therefore, this study can provide a Z-scheme heterojunction nanocomposite photocatalytic process with environmental purification functions.

Abstract:The most promising approach to mitigating the greenhouse effect and tackling the energy crisis is to convert carbon dioxide into valuable liquid fuels through artificial photosynthesis. Nevertheless, most photocatalysts have poor product selectivity, low catalytic performance, and poor cycling stability. Herein, we synthesized novel UiO-66(Zr/Ce) nanosheets bonding on g-C3N4 [g-C3N4/UiO-66(Zr/Ce)] by an in situ method using single atoms of Zr and Ce as metal sources, and the g-C3N4 and UiO-66(Zr/Ce) are linked via N–Zr/Ce–O bonds on the g-C3N4/UiO-66 interface. Chemical bonds and close contact between UiO-66(Zr/Ce) with a two-dimensional structure and g-C3N4 accelerate the transmission of electrons and significantly suppresses the quenching of photogenerated carriers. Furthermore, the doping of Ce in g-C3N4/UiO-66(Zr/Ce) concentrates the photogenerated electrons around the Ce atoms, making the multielectron CO2 reduction reaction more favorable. Without adding any sacrificial agent, the g-C3N4/UiO-66(Zr/Ce) shows efficient reduction of CO2 to CH3OH (54.71 μmol h–1 g–1) and C2H5OH (38.10 μmol h–1 g–1). Moreover, the TOF value of the composite catalyst is 28 times that of bulk UiO-66(Zr/Ce). It exhibits excellent stability thanks to the strong coordination bonds of the composite catalyst. After 12 cycles, the photocatalytic performance does not decrease.

Abstract:Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are omnipresent in the sphere of human industrial, harboring latent adverse consequences for health and the ecological system. The photothermal catalytic oxidation of VOCs is an advanced integrated technology that harnesses the combined effects of light and heat energy to enhance the efficiency of VOCs degradation. Herein, a bimetallic Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) was synthesized with the incorporation of Ce into the UiO-66-NH2(Zr) (i.e., UNH(Zr)), UiO-66-NH2(Zr2Ce) (i.e., UNH(Z2C)), which was achieved with Ce atom substituting for a portion of Zr atom within the Zr-oxo clusters. Pt nanoparticles (NPs) are integrated with MOFs to form composites using the dual-solvent method. Ce-oxo fulfills a bifunctional role: it not only facilitates the enhancement of the ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT), but also establishes interaction with Pt NPs. Ce-oxo mediates an enhancement of electron density on Pt NPs. This phenomenon enhances the adsorption and activation of oxygen, significantly boosting the photocatalytic performance for toluene degradation, as demonstrated by a reduction of 30℃ for complete mineralization of toluene as compared to that of Pt@UiO-66-NH2(Zr) (i.e., PUNH(Zr)). This study potentially offers new insights into the relationship between electron transfer effects in bimetallic MOF-based catalysts and their efficient catalytic performance for VOCs degradation.
Efficient CeO2/ZnO Heterojunction for Enhanced Heterogeneous Photocatalytic Application

Abstract:Organic pollutants pose a significant challenge due to their toxicity and potential carcinogenicity, thereby posing a severe threat to the environment and human health. Heterogeneous photocatalysts offer promising advantages over traditional water purification methods due to their tunable electronic properties such as bandgap, easy separation from the reaction solution and formidable nanostructures. Herein, we prepare a CeO2/ZnO heterostructure via simple hydrothermal synthesis. The electronic structure of this nanocomposite was tuned to achieve a band gap of ∼2.94 eV, which was between the individual bandgaps of CeO2 and ZnO nanoparticles. In addition, the mixed valence character of Ce further enhanced the electronic properties of the CeO2/ZnO heterostructure. The photocatalytic performance of CeO2, ZnO and CeO2/ZnO heterostructure was evaluated and it was found that CeO2/ZnO heterostructure with a Zn/Ce ratio of 0.2 exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity, where the degradation efficiency was 99.28 % after irradiation for 60 min. It was mainly ascribed to the heterojunction structure of the CeO2/ZnO nanocomposite, leading to a higher separation efficiency of electron-hole pairs and generating more superoxide radicals, which in turn improved the photocatalytic activity effectively.
Mixed-Valence Bimetallic Ce/Zr MOF-Based Nanoarchitecture: A Visible-Light-Active Photocatalyst for Ciprofloxacin Degradation and Hydrogen Evolution.

Abstract:A mixed-valency bimetallic Ce/Zr MOF with Ce3+/Ce4+ ions incorporated and an oxygen vacancy-rich single-component photocatalyst have been designed through the one-step solvothermal route to harness photons from the visible-light spectrum for green energy (H2) generation and ciprofloxacin (CIP) degradation. The one-pot-engineered bimetallic Ce/Zr MOF shows visible-light-active characteristics accompanied by a narrower band gap, along with enhanced exciton separation and superior ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT), due to the presence of an interconvertible Ce3+/Ce4+ ions pair in comparison to its pristine MOF counterpart. The Ce ion insertion led to increase in electron density around the Zr4+ ion, along with generation of some oxygen vacancies (OV), which cumulatively led to the rise in the photo-reaction output. The synthesized UNH (Ce/Zr 1:1) MOF displayed a boosted photocatalytic H2 production rate of 468.30 μmol h-1 (ACE = 3.51%), which is around fourfolds higher than that of pristine MOFs. Moreover, for CIP photodegradation, the UNH (Ce/Zr 1:1) shows an enhanced efficiency of 90.8% and follows pseudo-first-order kinetics with a rate constant of 0.0363. Typically, the active species involved in the photo-redox reaction of the CIP photodegradation follows the order hydroxyl radical (OH•) < superoxide radical (O2•-), as confirmed by the TA and NBT tests. Consequently, the bimetallic Ce/Zr MOF can be readily employed as a robust photocatalyst with enhanced tendencies towards CIP degradation and H2 evolution.

Abstract:Photocatalyst performance is often limited by the poor separation and rapid recombination of photoinduced charge carriers. A nanoheterojunction structure can facilitate the separation of charge carrier, increase their lifetime, and induce photocatalytic activity. In this study, CeO2@ZnO nanocomposites were produced by pyrolyzing Ce@Zn metal–organic frameworks prepared from cerium and zinc nitrate precursors. The effects of the Zn:Ce ratio on the microstructure, morphology, and optical properties of the nanocomposites were studied. In addition, the photocatalytic activity of the nanocomposites under light irradiation was assessed using rhodamine B as a model pollutant, and a mechanism for photodegradation was proposed. With the increase in the Zn:Ce ratio, the particle size decreased, and surface area increased. Furthermore, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses revealed the formation of a heterojunction interface, which enhanced photocarrier separation. The prepared photocatalysts show a higher photocatalytic activity than CeO2@ZnO nanocomposites previously reported in the literature. The proposed synthetic method is simple and may produce highly active photocatalysts for environmental remediation.

Promoting Metal Oxides–zeolite Electron Interaction on MnCeOx/HY Catalyst for Boosting Nitrogen Oxides Reduction

Abstract:The MnOx-CeO2 metal oxides are considered as promising alternative catalysts for selective catalytic reduction with NH3 (NH3-SCR) to remove NOx due to its excellent low-temperature performance. However, their strong oxidative ability can lead to NH3 over-oxidation, narrowing the active temperature range and reducing N2 selectivity. Moreover, their weak surface acidity hampers medium to high-temperature activity and alkali metal resistance. Hence, in this study, MnCeOx metal oxides were coupled with HY zeolite to create MnCeOx/HY, demonstrating excellent NH3-SCR performance. The high dispersion of metal oxides on the zeolite surface and their close integration promoted strong electron interaction, effectively reducing oxygen vacancies and surface adsorbed oxygen concentrations. Consequently, the oxidative ability of active metal oxides was appropriately weakened, suppressing undesirable side reactions. MnCeOx/HY also notably suppressed NO adsorption and nitrate formation, promoting the catalytic reaction solely through the E-R mechanism and enhancing N2 selectivity. The abundant strong acid sites on the zeolite surface facilitates NH3 adsorption at moderate to high temperatures, notably expanding the active temperature window. Furthermore, the acid sites of HY zeolite serve as sacrificial sites, preferentially reacting with alkali metals, thus exhibiting excellent resistance to alkali metal poisoning on MnCeOx/HY. Combining with the DFT results, the structure-activity relationships in this study also reveal the importance of the effective synergy between acid sites and redox sites for optimal catalytic performance, offering valuable insights into the development of highly active and alkali-resistant denitrification catalysts.
Preparation and Photocatalysis of Nano-Zn/Ce Composite Oxides

Abstract:Metal oxide photocatalysts often lead to partial or complete mineralization of organic pollutants. On irradiation with UV-visible light, metal oxides catalyze redox reactions in the presence of air and O2 and water. Using ascorbic acid as a new combustion agent, ZnO was rapidly synthesized. Nano-Zn/CeO2 composites were prepared by a heterogeneous-precipitation method using (NH4)2CO3 as precipitation agent. X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry, ultraviolet spectrophotometry, and differential thermal analysis were used to analyse the microstructures of the synthesized materials. Differential thermal analysis, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction analyses indicated that ZnO was coated by CeO2. Herein, a nano-Zn/Ce composite was explored as a catalyst for Rhodamine B photodegradation with a 125-W lamp as the UV radiation source in a batch reactor. The results show the photocatalytic properties of the nano-Zn/Ce composite were superior to ZnO, CeO2, and nano-Ce/Zn composites.
Microwave-Assisted Rapid Substitution of Ti for Zr to Produce Bimetallic (Zr/Ti)UiO-66-NH2 with Congenetic "Shell-Core" Structure for Enhancing Photocatalytic Removal of Nitric Oxide

Abstract:Efficient nitric oxide (NO) removal without nitrogen dioxide (NO2 ) emission is desired for the control of air pollution. Herein, a series of (Zr/Ti)UiO-66-NH2 with congenetic shell-core structure, denoted as Ti-UION, are rapidly synthesized by microwave-assisted post-synthetic modification for NO removal. The optimal Ti-UION (i.e., 2.5Ti-UION) exhibits the highest activity of 80.74% without NO2 emission with moisture, which is 21.65% greater than that of the UiO-66-NH2 . The NO removal efficiency of 2.5Ti-UION further increases to 95.92% without photocatalyst deactivation under an anhydrous condition. This is because selectively produced NO2 in photocatalysis is completely adsorbed into micropores, refreshing active sites for subsequent reaction. In addition, the enhanced photocatalytic activity after Ti substitution is due to the presence of Ti electron acceptor, the potential difference between the shell and core of Ti-UION crystal, and the high conductivity of TiO units. Additionally, the improved adsorption of gas molecules not only favors NO oxidation, but also avoids the emission of NO2 . This work provides a feasible strategy for rapid metal substitution in metal-organic frameworks and insights into enhanced NO photodegradation.
Enhancing visible-light photocatalytic activity for overall water splitting in UiO-66 by controlling metal node composition

Abstract:The photocatalytic activity of a series of five UiO-66 (M: Zr, Zr/Ti, Zr/Ce, Zr/Ce/Ti, Ce) materials for overall water splitting with generation of hydrogen and oxygen has been herein measured. The most efficient photocatalyst for the overall water splitting is the trimetallic MOF UiO-66(Zr/Ce/Ti) which achieves 230 <math>μ</math> mol <math>∙</math> g−1 of H2 and 110 <math>μ</math> mol <math>∙</math> g−1 of O2, upon UV light irradiation, and 210 <math>μ</math> mol <math>∙</math> g−1 of H2 and 70 <math>μ</math> mol <math>∙</math> g−1 of O2, under visible light irradiation. These productivity data indicate that a considerable percentage of its photocatalytic activity derives from the visible region of the spectrum (λ > 450 nm). The photocatalytic activity of trimetallic UiO-66(Zr/Ce/Ti) was maintained upon reuse. Kinetics of the charge separated state monitored by transient absorption spectroscopy shows similar deactivation profiles for the five UiO-66 samples, suggesting that it is the charge separation efficiency the main factor responsible for the differences in the photocatalytic activity. The use of methanol as sacrificial agent during the photocatalytic experiments indicated that the high photocatalytic efficiency for overall water splitting in UiO-66(Zr/Ce/Ti) derives from the favorable kinetics of oxygen evolution. These results show the potential of multimetallic metal-organic frameworks as solar photocatalysts by tuning light absorption towards the visible region.

Abstract:The construction of CN/UiO-67 (CNU) S-scheme heterojunction composites through in situ formation of UiO-67 on carbon nitride (C 3 N 4 ) helps to address the limitations of carbon nitride (CN) in photocatalytic NO elimination. The optimized CNU 3 demonstrates superior photocatalytic efficiency, which is attributed to electronic channels constructed by Zr-N bonds and S-scheme electron transport mechanism, effectively promoting the efficient separation of photogenerated charge carriers with high redox potentials. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations reveal redistributed electronic orbitals in CNU 3 , with progressive and continuous energy levels near the Fermi level, which bolsters electronic conduction. Comprehensive quenching experiments, Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR), and in situ Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS) analyses highlight a synergistic interplay of electrons, holes, and superoxide radicals in CNU 3 , inhibiting the generation of toxic nitrogen oxide intermediates and culminating in highly efficient photocatalytic NO oxidation. This study not only elucidates the mechanisms underpinning the enhanced performance of CNU 3 heterojunctions but also offers new perspectives on the preparation and interfacial charge separation of heterojunction photocatalysts.

Abstract:Hollow MOFs nanoreactors with controlled shape, size, pore volume, and shell thickness have been considered as emerging materials for a variety of applications. Selecting environmentally friendly and cheap colloidal carbon (CNs) as the template, bimetallic hollow Ce/Zr-UiO-66 nanoreactors were synthesized. The PXRD, TEM, EDS and other characterization analysis proved that hollow structure was formed, accompanied with incorporating of Ce(III) in UiO-66 and the crystal morphology was good. Furthermore, bimetallic hollow Ce/Zr-UiO-66 was studied as a catalyst to catalyze the conversion of furfural (FF) to furfuryl alcohol (FAL) without exogenous hydrogen. The results showed that the hollow structure and bimetallic UiO-66 was beneficial to the catalytic reaction by modulating the ratio of Ce(III) and Zr(IV). Among then, the 1:4 ratio of Ce(III) and Zr(IV) displayed good catalytic activity, the conversion rate of FF was 95% and selectivity of FAL was 94%. This study opens a new avenue for further rational design and construction of well-performing MOFs nanoreactors.

Research on Cu-Site Modification of g-C3N4/CeO2-like Z-Scheme Heterojunction for Enhancing CO2 Reduction and Mechanism Insight

Abstract:In this work, the successful synthesis of a Cu@g-C3N4/CeO2-like Z-scheme heterojunction through hydrothermal and photo-deposition methods represents high CO2 reduction activity with remarkable CO selectivity, as evidenced by the impressive CO yield of 33.8 μmol/g for Cu@g-C3N4/CeO2, which is over 10 times higher than that of g-C3N4 and CeO2 individually. The characterization and control experimental results indicate that the formation of heterojunctions and the introduction of Cu sites promote charge separation and the transfer of hot electrons, as well as the photothermal effect, which are the essential reasons for the improved CO2 reduction activity. Remarkably, Cu@g-C3N4/CeO2 still exhibits about 92% performance even after multiple cycles. In situ FTIR was utilized to confirm the production of COOH* at 1472 cm−1 and to elucidate the mechanism behind the high selectivity for CO production. The study's investigation into the wide-ranging applicability of the Cu@g-C3N4/CeO2-like Z-scheme heterojunction catalysts is noteworthy, and the exploration of potential reaction mechanisms for CO2 reduction adds valuable insights to the field of catalysis.

Abstract:The photocatalytic efficiency can be improved by constructing a Z-scheme heterojunction, but hindered by the only half utilization efficiency of photogenerated carriers. Thus, a novel material, UiO-66-NH2@TAPB-BTCA-COP-Ag (U6N@COP-Ag), with surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect synergistic Z-scheme heterostructure has been prepared by depositing Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) on TAPB-BTCA-COP (COP)-coated UiO-66-NH2. The deposited Ag NPs expand the range of light absorption and introduce more photogenerated electrons in the composite. The SPR effect of noble metal compensates for the limited utilization of the Z-scheme heterojunction photogenerated carriers and the increased density of semiconductor carriers at the reducing end, which is more conducive to the redox reaction of the catalyst. Without sacrificial agents, U6N@COP-Ag shows great photocatalytic nitrogen reduction conversion efficiency with the rate of NH4+ in ammonia water at 167.63μmol g-1h-1, which is 6.6 and 2.8 times that of the original UiO-66-NH2 and COP, respectively. In-situ XPS and Kelvin probe technology verify that UiO-66-NH2 and Ag nanoparticles provide more photogenerated electrons to COP. The cleavage and conversion of N2 to NH4+ on U6N@COP-Ag was confirmed by the enhancement of NH bonds and NH4+ characteristic absorption peaks in the in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in-situ DRIFTS). This work presents a great method to improve the Z-scheme heterojunction photogenerated carrier utilization and the density of semiconductor carriers at the reducing end by the noble metal SPR effect, which is more conducive to enhance the redox reaction of the catalyst.
Fabrication of Ce-doped UiO-66-NH2 for highly efficient and selective photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CH4

Abstract:Defect engineering by creating oxygen vacancies (OVs) and heterogeneous frustrated Lewis acid-base pairs (FLPs) emerged as an efficient strategy to enhance the selective conversion CO2 to CH4. Considering the intrinsic FLPs contained in UiO-66-NH2 (UNH for abbreviation), in this paper, the OVs was introduced therein by fabricating the Ce-doped UNH (denoted as UNH(Ce/Zr)) via one-step solvothermal route. The as-prepared UNH(Ce/Zr) catalyst exhibited the CH4 yield of 31.02 μmol·g−1·h−1 accompanied with the CH4 selectivity of 93 % and satisfying recycling stability. The XRD, SEM, FT-IR, XPS, TG, TPD and NH3 in situ DRIFTS and in situ FT-IR characterization results justified that the UNH(Ce/Zr) possess the obviously increased OVs sites and enhanced Lewis acidic and basic properties. Additionally, the photoelectrochemical characterization results showed that UNH(Ce/Zr)−0.014 efficiently improved photogenerated electron-hole separation efficiency and charge transfer rate. It could be concluded that it was the cooperative action of OVs and FLPs that led to the high CH4 selectivity and CH4 yield.

Abstract:Photocatalysis is a promising method for the decontamination of wastewater using renewable energy source. However, photocatalysts frequently exhibit low photocatalytic degradation performance because the photogenerated electron-hole pairs undergo rapid recombination. Nevertheless, the formation of nanoheterojunction interfaces in photocatalytic materials provides a route to separates the photogenerated charge carriers. Therefore, in this study, ZnO@CeO2 nanocomposites were prepared by pyrolyzing a coprecipitated Zn@Ce metal-organic-framework precursor, and the effect of the pyrolysis temperature on the photocatalytic performance was investigated. The nanocomposites were composed of hexagonal wurtzite ZnO and cubic CeO2 and possessed a distinct hetero-interface between ZnO and CeO2. The photodegradation performance of the photocatalyst for the degradation of model contaminants (organic dyes) was assessed, and a mechanism for the photocatalytic degradation is proposed. Crucially, the heterojunction interface induced a built-in electric field, which resulted in the accumulation of photoelectrons and holes in the more negative CeO2 conduction band and positive ZnO valence band, respectively, thereby achieving photocarrier separation.
A novel (Zr/Ce)UiO-66(NH2)@g-C3N4 Z-scheme heterojunction for boosted tetracycline photodegradation via effective electron transfer

Abstract:Aiming at efficient tetracycline (TC) removal, a co-modified (Zr/Ce)U(NH2) was elaborately designed and integrated with thin-layered g-C3N4, forming a novel (Zr/Ce)U(NH2)@CN Z-scheme heterojunction. XRD, XPS, FTIR, ISI-XPS and other analysis cooperatively demonstrated that within this (Zr/Ce)U(NH2)@CN composite organic linkers H2BDC was successfully modified by –NH2, metal Zr in Zr-oxo cluster was partially substituted by Ce, Z-scheme heterojunction was formed by the close interaction between MOFs and g-C3N4, as well as the excellent thermal stability and large specific surface area were achieved. Since g-C3N4 could serve as carrier skeleton to improve the precursor dispersion, the (Zr/Ce)U(NH2) with reduced particle size grew densely on it. DRS, PL and TRPL characterization proved more photogenerated carriers with prolonged lifetime were generated. As expected, (Zr/Ce)U(NH2)@CN composite exhibited high TC degradation rate, whose kinetic constant was 23.73 times greater than that of UiO-66, and 5.89 folds larger than that of CN, respectively. This enhanced photocatalytic performance was ascribed to the effective electron transfer regulated by MOFs unit, where the Zr/Ce improved the electron transfer from photoexcited organic linkers to metal-oxo clusters, as well as the MOFs/g-C3N4 Z-scheme heterojunction strengthened interfacial photogenerated carriers transfer. ·OH was the vital species responsible for TC removal using (Zr/Ce)U(NH2)@CN. Furthermore, intermediate products and degradation pathways were proposed based on HPLC-MS. The toxicity estimation indicated the comprehensive toxicity of TC was significantly alleviated by (Zr/Ce)U(NH2)@CN photocatalysis.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) as highly porous photocatalysts have received increasing attention. Among them, much work has focused on UiO66, due to its high stability in water. In this work, four UiO66-based MOFs have been compared as photocatalysts for H2 production in an aqueous suspension of Na2S/Na2SO3. Under a 420nm LED lamp, the amount of H2 evolved at 2 h (n2h) was negligible for all MOFs. After 40% cubic CdS loading via a two-step method, the n2h notably increased, which varied in the order Ce-UiO66-NH2 > Zr-UiO66-NH2 > Ce-UiO66 > Zr-UiO66. By contrast, CdS and 0.5% Pt/Ce-UiO66-NH2 had an n2h value approximately 12 and 17 times smaller than that measured for 40% CdS/Ce-UiO66-NH2, respectively. Among the MOFs, Ce-UiO66-NH2 had the smallest band gap, the most negative flat band potential, and the fastest charge transfer at a solid–liquid interface. A possible mechanism is proposed, involving the mutually promoted charge transfer between Ce-UiO66-NH2 and CdS, followed by proton reduction on CdS and sulfide oxidation on the MOF. This work shows that Ce-based UiO66 is more active than a Zr-based one coupled with CdS for H2 production under visible light.
