Abstract:Superfluid helium is an important model system to study quantum hydrodynamics. Numerous researches have been reported on fascinating phenomena including superfluidity, unusually low viscosity, and the emergence of the quantum vortex. Here, we demonstrated the visualization of the quantum vortices, which are intrinsically unable to be seen. We prepared many nanoparticles in superfluid helium by using the laser ablation technique. The fabricated nanoparticles are trapped at the core of the quantum vortices. By imaging the scattered light from the nanoparticles, we visualized the motion of the quantum vortices.

Abstract:Gravity simulators are laboratory systems where small excitations like sound or surface waves behave as fields propagating on a curved spacetime geometry. The analogy between gravity and fluids requires vanishing viscosity, a feature naturally realised in superfluids like liquid helium or cold atomic clouds. Such systems have been successful in verifying key predictions of quantum field theory in curved spacetime. In particular, quantum simulations of rotating curved spacetimes indicative of astrophysical black holes require the realisation of an extensive vortex flow in superfluid systems. Here we demonstrate that despite the inherent instability of multiply quantised vortices, a stationary giant quantum vortex can be stabilised in superfluid $^4$He. Its compact core carries thousands of circulation quanta, prevailing over current limitations in other physical systems such as magnons, atomic clouds and polaritons. We introduce a minimally invasive way to characterise the vortex flow by exploiting the interaction of micrometre-scale waves on the superfluid interface with the background velocity field. Intricate wave-vortex interactions, including the detection of bound states and distinctive analogue black hole ringdown signatures, have been observed. These results open new avenues to explore quantum-to-classical vortex transitions and utilise superfluid helium as a finite temperature quantum field theory simulator for rotating curved spacetimes.

Quantum vortex stability in draining fluid flows

Abstract:Quantum vortices with more than a single circulation quantum are usually unstable and decay into clusters of smaller vortices. One way to prevent the decay is to place the vortex at the centre of a convergent (draining) fluid flow, which tends to force vortices together. It is found that whilst the primary splitting instability is suppressed in this way (and completely quenched for strong enough flows) a secondary instability can emerge in circular trapping geometries. This behaviour is related to an instability of rotating black holes when superradiantly amplified waves are confined inside a reflective cavity. The end state of the secondary instability is dramatic, manifesting as a shock wave that propagates round the circular wall and nucleates many more vortices.

Abstract:Like many quantum fluids, superfluid helium-4 (He II) can be considered as a mixture of two miscible fluid components: an inviscid superfluid and a viscous normal fluid consisting of thermal quasiparticles [1]. A mutual friction between the two fluids can emerge due to quasiparticles scattering off quantized vortex lines in the superfluid [2]. This quantum dissipation mechanism is the key for understanding various fascinating behaviors of the two-fluid system [3,4]. However, due to the lack of experimental data for guidance, modeling the mutual friction between individual vortices and the normal fluid remains an unsettled topic despite decades of research [5-10]. Here we report an experiment where we visualize the motion of quantized vortex rings in He II by decorating them with solidified deuterium tracer particles. By examining how the rings spontaneously shrink and accelerate, we provide unequivocal evidences showing that only a recent theory [9] which accounts for the coupled motion of the two fluids with a self-consistent local friction can reproduce the observed ring dynamics. Our work eliminates long-standing ambiguities in our theoretical description of the vortex dynamics in He II, which will have a far-reaching impact since similar mutual friction concept has been adopted for a wide variety of quantum two-fluid systems, including atomic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) [11,12], superfluid neutron stars [13-15], and gravity-mapped holographic superfluid [16,17].

Abstract:A vortex in a superfluid gas inside an optical lattice can behave as a massive particle moving in a periodic potential and exhibiting quantum properties. In this Letter we discuss these properties and show that the excitation of vortex motions in a two-dimensional lattice can lead to striking measurable changes in its dynamic response. It would be possible by means of Bragg spectroscopy to carry out the first direct measurement of the effective vortex mass, the pinning to the underlying lattice, and the dissipative damping.

Abstract:Under the circumstance of parallel rotation and magnetic field that are expected in off-central heavy ion collisions, charged pions may form a Bose-Einstein condensate because of the lift of the Landau level degeneracy by rotation. We show that the ground state of such a pion superfluid is a super giant quantum vortex, i.e., a quantized vortex with a large circulation. The size of the vortex is as large as the system size, which may yield to observable effects in off-central heavy ion collisions.

Abstract:We have theoretically investigated the structure of spinning self-bound droplets made of a K41−Rb87 Bose mixture by solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation including beyond-mean-field correction in the Lee-Huang-Yang form. The structure and energetics of vortex formation in the self-bound mixture have been elucidated, showing that the formation of linear vortices in the heavier species is energetically favored over other configurations. A fake (partially filled) core develops as a consequence in the other species, resulting in a hole which might be imaged in experiments. We computed the minimal size of K41−Rb87 droplets which can host stable vortex lines in their interior, which is important information for experiments aimed at the observation of vortices in such systems. The different role of quantized vortices and capillary waves, which are the two ways angular momentum can be stored in a swirling superfluid, is addressed in detail by computing the relation between angular momentum and rotational frequency. The results show intriguing similarities with the case of a prototypical superfluid, i.e., He4 droplets when set into rotation. A two-branches curve in the stability diagram, qualitatively similar to the one expected for classical (incompressible and viscous) rotating liquid droplets, is obtained when vortices are present in the droplets, while prolate (i.e., nonaxisymmetric) shapes are only permitted in vortex-free droplets. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevA.105.063328 ©2022 American Physical Society

Abstract:Supersolids are states of matter that spontaneously break two continuous symmetries: translational invariance due to the appearance of a crystal structure and phase invariance due to phase locking of single-particle wave functions, responsible for superfluid phenomena. While originally predicted to be present in solid helium, ultracold quantum gases provided a first platform to observe supersolids, with particular success coming from dipolar atoms. Phase locking in dipolar supersolids has been probed through e.g. measurements of the phase coherence and gapless Goldstone modes, but quantized vortices, a hydrodynamic fingerprint of superfluidity, have not yet been observed. Here, with the prerequisite pieces at our disposal, namely a method to generate vortices in dipolar gases and supersolids with two-dimensional crystalline order, we report on the theoretical investigation and experimental observation of vortices in the supersolid phase. Our work reveals a fundamental difference in vortex seeding dynamics between unmodulated and modulated quantum fluids. This opens the door to study the hydrodynamic properties of exotic quantum systems with multiple spontaneously broken symmetries, in disparate domains such as quantum crystals and neutron stars.

Abstract:Vortices in spin-0 superfluids generically carry magnetic fields inside their cores, so that even neutral superfluid vortices may be thought of as magnetic flux tubes. We give a systematic analysis of this 'vortex magnetic effect' using effective field theory, clarifying earlier literature on the subject. Abstract:General relativity predicts that the curvature of spacetime induces spin rotations on a parallel transported particle. We deploy Unruh's analogue gravity picture and consider a quantised vortex embedded in a two-dimensional superfluid Bose--Einstein condensate. We show that such a vortex behaves dynamically like a charged particle with a spin in a gravitational field. The existence of a vortex spin in a superfluid complements Onsager's prediction of the quantisation of circulation, and is suggestive of potential quantum technology applications of rotating superfluids.

Abstract:Superfluid dilute neutron matter and ultracold gas, close to the unitary regime, exhibit several similarities. Therefore, to a certain extent, fermionic ultracold gases may serve as emulators of dilute neutron matter, which forms the inner crust of neutron stars and is not directly accessed experimentally. Quantum vortices are one of the most significant properties of neutron superfluid, essential for comprehending neutron stars' dynamics. The structure and dynamics of quantum vortices as a function of pairing correlations' strength are being investigated experimentally and theoretically in ultracold gases. Certain aspects of these studies are relevant to neutron stars. We provide an overview of the characteristics of quantum vortices in s-wave-type fermionic and electrically neutral superfluids. The main focus is on the dynamics of fermionic vortices and their intrinsic structure.

Abstract:The vortex filament model has become a standard and powerful tool to visualize the motion of quantized vortices in helium superfluids. In this article, we present an overview of the method and highlight its impact in aiding our understanding of quantum turbulence, particularly superfluid helium. We present an analysis of the structure and arrangement of quantized vortices. Our results are in agreement with previous studies showing that under certain conditions, vortices form coherent bundles, which allows for classical vortex stretching, giving quantum turbulence a classical nature. We also offer an explanation for the differences between the observed properties of counterflow and pure superflow turbulence in a pipe. Finally, we suggest a mechanism for the generation of coherent structures in the presence of normal fluid shear.

Abstract:We experimentally and numerically study the collapse dynamics of a quantum vortex in a two-dimensional atomic superfluid following a fast interaction ramp from repulsion to attraction. We find the conditions and time scales for a superfluid vortex to radially converge into a quasi-stationary density profile, demonstrating the first spontaneous formation of a vortex soliton in an atomic Bose gas. We record an emergent universal dynamics of an azimuthal modulational instability, which amplifies initial density perturbations and leads to the eventual splitting of a vortex soliton or direct fragmentation of a superfluid into disordered, but roughly circular arrays of Townes soliton-like wavepackets. Our study sets the stage for exploring universal out-of-equilibrium dynamics of vortex quantum matter quenched to attractive interactions.

Self-bound vortex lattice in a rapidly rotating quantum droplet

Abstract:A rapidly rotating Bose gas in the quantum Hall limit is usually associated with a melted vortex lattice. In this work, we report a self-bound and visible triangular vortex lattice without melting for a two-dimensional Bose-Bose droplet rotating in the quantum Hall limit, i.e., with rotation frequency $\Omega$ approaching the trapping frequency $\omega$. Increasing $\Omega$ with respect to interaction strength $U$, we find a smooth crossover of the vortex lattice droplet from a needling regime, as featured by small vortex cores and an equilibrium flat-top surface, to the lowest-Landau-level regime with Gaussian-extended cores spreading over the whole surface. The surface density of such a rotating droplet is higher than that of a static one, and their ratio is found to be a universal function of $\Omega/U$. We have demonstrated these results by both numerical and variational methods. The results pave the way for future experimental exploration of rapidly rotating ultracold droplets into the quantum Hall limit.

Abstract:Vortex mass, which is the inertia of a quantum vortex, has never been observed in superfluids and is a long-standing problem in low temperature physics. The impact of the mass is considered negligible in typical experiments with superfluid $^4$He. Recent developments of experimental techniques for manipulating quantum vortices in superfluid atomic gases have enabled us to test this problem more accurately. By introducing the vortex mass time and length as universal scales to many-body problems of massive quantum vortices, the theoretical description is formulated in the simplest manner and is universally applicable to different quantum fluids, including fermionic and multicomponent superfluids. There are two branches, the cyclotron and massless branches, for the circular motion of a pair of like-sign vortices. Finding a stable cyclotron branch for the motion of vortices is a clear evidence of vortex mass and superfluid $^3$He-B is the specific example of a system where this phenomena could be observed. The impact of the mass on the massless branch is small but can be enhanced by taking the difference in the two-body dynamics of point vortices with different initial conditions. Our results imply that the vortex mass is a direct cause of the splitting instability of a doubly quantized vortex at absolute zero and that the vortex mass length characterizes the final state after the instability. It is also demonstrated that a pair of massive vortices with opposite circulations has a critical distance characterized by the vortex mass length, below which they are spontaneously annihilated without thermal fluctuations.

Quantum Turbulence in a Three-Dimensional Holographic Superfluid

Abstract:We report real-time simulations of far-from-equilibrium dynamics of a holographic superfluid in three dimensions. The holographic duality maps a strongly coupled superfluid to a weakly coupled theory with gravity in a higher-dimensional curved space which we study numerically. Starting from configurations of dense tangles of quantized vortex lines, the superfluid exhibits turbulent behavior during its evolution towards thermal equilibrium. Specifically, we observe two subsequent universal regimes of quasi-stationary scaling in the occupation number spectrum, the first of which is Kolmogorov-like. Indications for the strongly dissipative nature of vortex dynamics in the three-dimensional holographic superfluid are found in the rapid shrinking and annihilation of small vortex rings that emerge from frequent reconnections of vortex lines during the evolution.

Abstract:We present experimental and theoretical results on formation of quantum vortices in a laser beam propagating in a nonlinear medium. Topological constrains richer than the mere conservation of vorticity impose an elaborate dynamical behavior to the formation and annihilation of vortex-antivortex pairs. We identify two such mechanisms, both described by the same fold-Hopf bifurcation. Direct excitation of Kelvin waves on quantized vortices

Abstract:Helices and spirals, prevalent across various systems, play a crucial role in characterizing symmetry, describing dynamics, and imparting unique functionalities, attributed to their inherent simplicity and chiral nature. A helical excitation on a quantized vortex, an example of a one-dimensional topological defect, emerges as a Nambu-Goldstone mode following spontaneous symmetry breaking, known as a Kelvin wave. Kelvin waves play a vital role in energy dissipation within inviscid quantum fluids. However, deliberately exciting Kelvin waves has proven to be challenging. Here, we introduce a controlled method for exciting Kelvin waves on a quantized vortex in superfluid helium-4. We used a charged nanoparticle, oscillated by a time-varying electric field, to stimulate Kelvin waves on the vortex. A major breakthrough in our research is the confirmation of the helical nature of Kelvin waves through three-dimensional image reconstruction, providing visual evidence of their complex dynamics. Additionally, we determined the dispersion relation and the phase velocity of the Kelvin wave and identified the vorticity direction, enhancing our understanding of quantum fluid behavior. This work elucidates the dynamics of Kelvin waves and pioneers a novel approach for manipulating and observing quantized vortices in three dimensions, thereby opening new avenues for exploring quantum fluidic systems.

Abstract:We show that three-dimensional spherical-shell condensates respond to rotation by forming two aligned triangular Abrikosov-like vortex lattices on each hemispherical surface. The centrifugal force due to rotation causes an elliptical deformation of the spherical shell condensate shape and for faster rotation rates, drives the formation of a central multi-charged vortex-antivortex pair at the poles surrounded by a ring of singly charged vortices in the bulk density. The vortex distributions observed in each hemisphere take a similar form to those found in rotating harmonic plus quartic traps.

Making ghost vortices visible in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

Abstract:Ghost vortices constitute an elusive class of topological excitations in quantum fluids since the relevant phase singularities fall within regions where the superfluid density is almost zero. Here we present a platform that allows for the controlled generation and observation of such vortices. Upon rotating an imbalanced mixture of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), one can obtain necklaces of real vortices in the majority component whose cores get filled by particles from the minority one. The wavefunction describing the state of the latter is shown to harbour a number of ghost vortices which are crucial to support the overall dynamics of the mixture. Their arrangement typically mirrors that of their real counterpart, hence resulting in a ``dual" ghost-vortex necklace, whose properties are thoroughly investigated in the present paper. We also present a viable experimental protocol for the direct observation of ghost vortices in a ${}^{23}\mathrm{Na}$ $+$ ${}^{39}\mathrm{K}$ ultracold mixture. Quenching the inter-component scattering length, some atoms are expelled from the vortex cores and, while diffusing, swirl around unpopulated phase singularities, thus turning them directly observable.
