Abstract:<p>Reference evapotranspiration (<em>ET0</em>) is a key component of the water cycle. In this study, a modified Penman–Monteith method incorporating the CO2 effect on surface resistance was used to estimate past change in <em>ET0</em> in China for 1961–2019 and to project future changes for 2040–2099. A partial-differential equation was used to attribute the changes in <em>ET0</em>. Results indicated the following. (1) A shift point in the annual <em>ET0</em> series occurred in 1993, in which annual <em>ET0</em> in China had been decreasing and then increased significantly by -18.93 and 11.19 mm·decade-1 before and after 1993, respectively, with <em>ET0</em> having changed most drastically within the temperate continental climate zone. (2) Wind speed and solar radiation were the major dominant factors responsible for the change in <em>ET0</em> during 1961–1992, and their contribution rates were 48.30 and 38.92%, respectively. During 1993–2019, increasing maximum air temperature was the dominant factor contributing to increasing <em>ET0</em>, with a contribution rate of 81.71%, yet wind speed was the dominant factor affecting <em>ET0</em> changes at 45% of the stations in China. (3) In future projections, maximum air temperature is expected to be the dominant factor influencing the increase in <em>ET0</em>, the values of which were projected at 1.49 and 16.05 mm·decade-1 during 2040–2099 under RCP4.5 and 8.5 scenarios, respectively, with projections from five GCMs. The increasing surface resistance response to elevated CO2 was found to be an important contributor to the decrease in <em>ET0</em>. Particularly for the RCP8.5 scenario, the increase in surface resistance was found to lead to the decrease in <em>ET0</em> by -0.68 mm·year-1 (-42.37%). This suggests that historical and future tendencies towards aridity in China may be considerably weaker and less extensive than previously assumed.</p>

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problems that this paper attempts to solve mainly focus on the following aspects: 1. **Analysis of the change in reference evapotranspiration (ET0)**: The paper aims to estimate the change in ET0 in China from 1961 to 2019 and predict the future change in ET0 from 2040 to 2099 by using the modified Penman - Monteith method, considering the influence of CO2 concentration on surface resistance. 2. **Attribution analysis of influencing factors**: The paper uses the partial differential equation method to quantitatively evaluate the contributions of maximum air temperature (Tmax), minimum air temperature (Tmin), wind speed (u2), solar radiation (Rs), actual vapor pressure (ea) and surface resistance (rs) to the change in ET0. 3. **Response to climate change**: The paper explores the response of ET0 to future climate change and its attribution under the two scenarios of RCP4.5 and RCP8.5. ### Specific problem analysis #### 1. Analysis of the change in reference evapotranspiration (ET0) - **Historical change**: The paper analyzes the spatio - temporal change of ET0 in China from 1961 to 2019 and finds that 1993 is an important turning point. Before 1993, the annual average ET0 in China decreased significantly, with a decreasing rate of 18.93 mm/decade; after 1993, the annual average ET0 increased significantly, with an increasing rate of 11.19 mm/decade. - **Future prediction**: The paper predicts the change trend of ET0 from 2040 to 2099. Under the RCP4.5 scenario, ET0 is expected to increase insignificantly by 1.49 mm/decade; while under the RCP8.5 scenario, ET0 is expected to increase significantly by 16.05 mm/decade. #### 2. Attribution analysis of influencing factors - **Historical attribution**: - During the period from 1961 to 1992, wind speed and solar radiation were the main factors causing the change in ET0, with their contribution rates being 48.30% and 38.92% respectively. - During the period from 1993 to 2019, the maximum air temperature was the main factor causing the increase in ET0, with its contribution rate being 81.71%, and the wind speed was still one of the main factors affecting the change in ET0, being dominant in about 45% of the stations. - **Future attribution**: - Under the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios, the maximum air temperature is expected to be the main factor affecting the increase in ET0. Especially under the RCP8.5 scenario, the increase in surface resistance will lead to a decrease in ET0 by 0.68 mm/year (a decrease of 42.37%). #### 3. Response to climate change - **Temperature influence**: The paper points out that the increases in the maximum and minimum air temperatures are the main driving factors for the future increase in ET0, especially under the RCP8.5 scenario. - **Other meteorological factors**: The changes in solar radiation, wind speed and actual vapor pressure also have important impacts on the change in ET0. For example, the increase in solar radiation and the decrease in wind speed have significant impacts on the change in ET0 under different scenarios respectively. ### Conclusion Through these analyses, the paper provides important information for researchers and policymakers regarding the impact of climate change and human activities on the water cycle, especially providing a scientific basis for the assessment and coping strategies of drought phenomena.
