Abstract:The survival of pine beauty moth, Panolis flammea, larvae was studied on 3 lodgepole pine, Pinus contorta, provenances and one Scots pine, Pinus sylvestris, provenance using plants at different stages of shoot elongation in 1986 and 1987. Larval survival was strongly influenced by pine shoot stage in both years: survival increased in late April and May, and declined in June. Differences in the pattern of larval survival in 1986 and 1987 were associated with differences in patterns of growth rates of pine shoots between the two years. Larval survival was much less affected by provenance; twice in 1986 larval survival was significantly different on different provenances, but on ten other occasions in 1986 and 1987 survival was not significantly different.
