Abstract:Technological advances in a variety of scientific disciplines are being applied in the life sciences leading to an increase in the number scientists who see themselves or are classed as being multidisciplinary. Although their diverse skills are celebrated and needed to understand the immense complexity of life, being a multidisciplinary researcher can pose unique challenges. We asked multidisciplinary researchers and the director of an institute that fosters multidisciplinary research for their thoughts on what they see as the challenges or obstacles that multidisciplinary scientists can often face.

Abstract:Previous research into student learning in departments of higher education has shown that links can be established between students' approaches to studying and their perceptions of the academic environment. It has also been found that students with differing study orientations are likely to define effective teaching in ways which reflect those orientations. The study reported here began by identifying different types of student epistemology and then investigated those factors within the academic environment which appeared to influence their incidence. Employing a naturalistic methodology-observations, interviews and case studies - the study was conducted in four departments in one institution of higher education: two arts and two science. Through a process of progressively focusing upon emergent issues, the study evolved through three stages, culminating in a model of the factors appearing to influence the development of student epistemology. It is found that the development of student epistemology is influenced by the interrelated factors of student learning approach, perception of the academic environment and lecturers' theories of teaching, which tends to uphold previous findings. It is also found, however, that students' conceptions of knowledge and their learning approaches are influenced by the ways in which knowledge is structured and presented within departments. Most particularly, a relationship was found between historical and philosophical studies, the methods of teaching them, and the development of student epistemologies.

Abstract:There are multiple opportunities to participate in team science, leading to long-term benefits (eg, research impact, novelty, productivity). Scholars are not well-trained in how to choose among these opportunities, often learning via trial and error. The ability to navigate collaborations is framed by several principles and considerations: (1) locus of control (what control we have over our own behavior) and how it affects academic job satisfaction; (2) the scarcity mindset that may manifest as a result of the fear of missing future opportunities; and (3) power dynamics and inequities (eg, among women and racial/ethnic minority individuals). To provide a more systematic approach to weighing academic opportunities, the authors offer 30 questions across six overlapping domains. The domains include: the big picture (eg, Is the opportunity a building block for your career?), context (eg, How much do you have on your plate?), person (eg, Who is asking?), team (eg, Is the team productive?), role (eg, Will you lead or assist?), and outcomes (eg, Might the opportunity lead to publications and/or grants?). We offer advice for decision-making. For example, when presented with an opportunity involving a significant time commitment, it is useful to allow at least 24 hours before deciding. The authors offer advice and sample language for communicating your decision. Although every situation is different, there are several fundamental issues and questions to consider when one is presented with a new opportunity-these questions are suggested for mentors and mentees.

Abstract:This essay was invited upon the receipt of the American Psychological Association Division 15's Career Achievement Award for Distinguished Psychological Contributions to Education in 2021. I propose that modern education should prepare students to continue learning so they can adapt to changing times, circumstances, and knowledge bases. A key step in adaptation is recognizing that there is something new. I review evidence from three sets of previous studies that show traditional instruction succeeds in helping students complete routine tasks but falls well short of preparing students to learn from new information and adapt it to novel situations. I try to understand these results from three levels of analysis: The overarching goals of instruction; the psychological assumptions underlying the instruction; and the in situ demands and natural responses of classroom learners. Given these analyses, I motivate four instructional design principles that emphasize helping students innovate new ideas and solutions, which in turn, leads them to focus on new information and prepares them to adapt and learn from future situations.

Abstract:At an institution which serves mostly commuting students who are first generation and often balancing life responsibilities, online learning is enticing and presents challenges. Students can struggle with the required skills of self-regulation, effective time-management, communication, and balancing needs. In the spring of 2022, an innovative teaching practice was added to an online first-year seminar course called Link to Life and Learning. Each week, students completed a low-stakes assignment which addressed a variety of factors related to belonging in college including: a reflection about the purpose of a college education, reading to comprehend, health and wellness, diversity and inclusion, procrastination, healthy relationships, involvement on campus, school-ife balance, and individualized meetings with the instructor. These assignments were created in a personalized manner that fit the needs of the students and the campus, while encouraging students to develop a connection to their purpose, passion, and sense of belonging.

Abstract:The transition from postdoc to junior faculty is exciting and uniquely challenging. On one hand, it allows for increased creative freedom and the opportunity to grow into an independent scientist. On the other hand, it comes with increasing administrative responsibilities, feelings of isolation, and high pressure to perform. The result is an environment that can leave very limited time for creative thinking and reflection. Here, we describe how participating in a program that allowed us to step out of our routine and work together helped us become more independent-and regain time to think.

Abstract:Various personal dimensions of students-particularly motivation, self-efficacy beliefs, and epistemic beliefs-can change in response to teaching, affect student learning, and be conceptualized as learning dispositions. We propose that these learning dispositions serve as learning outcomes in their own right; that patterns of interrelationships among these specific learning dispositions are likely; and that differing constellations (or learning disposition profiles) may have meaningful implications for instructional practices. In this observational study, we examine changes in these learning dispositions in the context of six courses at four institutions designed to scaffold undergraduate thesis writing and promote students' scientific reasoning in writing in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. We explore the utility of cluster analysis for generating meaningful learning disposition profiles and building a more sophisticated understanding of students as complex, multidimensional learners. For example, while students' self-efficacy beliefs about writing and science increased across capstone writing courses on average, there was considerable variability at the level of individual students. When responses on all of the personal dimensions were analyzed jointly using cluster analysis, several distinct and meaningful learning disposition profiles emerged. We explore these profiles in this work and discuss the implications of this framework for describing developmental trajectories of students' scientific identities.
A comparison of student perceptions regarding online courses and traditional courses: A case study

Loo (2002) applied principles of Kolb’s learning styles model to business education by conducting an analysis of studies that relied on Kolb’s Learning Styles Inventory, an instrument developed by Kolb to operationalize the model’s concepts. While Loo’s results were not definitive, he concluded that even those instructors who were aware of differences in students’ learning styles were not necessarily making deliberate efforts to vary the context of learning to encourage students to use all four approaches. No studies were included in this meta-analysis that examined the application of learning styles to the on-line environment. Situated Learning Theory Situated learning is essentially learning by doing, often referred to as experiential learning, as learning occurs while an individual is situated in a particular environment or context. As Gery (2001) pointed out, this type of learning is usually flexibly structured and shaped around increments of learning rather than a single isolated project. The most familiar example of this type of learning is the internship. A variety of learning strategies are involved in situated learning environments, usually closely integrated with one another. Abstract:A manuscript's writing style is central in determining its readership, influence, and impact. Past research has shown that, in many cases, scholars present a unique writing style that is manifested in their manuscripts. In this work, we report a comprehensive investigation into how scholars' writing styles evolve throughout their careers focusing on their academic relations with their advisors and peers. Our results show that scholars' writing styles tend to stabilize early on in their careers -- roughly their 13th publication. Around the same time, scholars' departures from their advisors' writing styles seem to converge as well. Last, collaborations involving fewer scholars, scholars from the same gender, or from the same field of study seem to bring about greater change in their co-authors' writing styles with younger scholars being especially influenceable.

Abstract:Since Newton, the scientific literature has expanded exponentially, with an estimated growth rate of ∼5% per year since 1950 (Bornmann et al., 2021). This pace of growth is daunting. It means that half of all scientific papers were published in the last 15 years and that any scientist older than 48 has been alive for the publication of over 90% of the entire scientific literature. Of perhaps some comfort, the consistency of exponential growth in science means that every generation of scientist has looked back in awe (and despair?) at a burgeoning literature:Science has always been modern; it has always been exploding into the population, always on the brink of expansive revolution. Scientists have always felt themselves to be awash in a sea of scientific literature .... Abstract:Over the years, I have worked in a variety of research groups and learnt from great scientists with different approaches. There is no 10-step plan for success in research, particularly when you are researching the unknown! But there are many paths to leading a rewarding career in scientific research and adopting practices from successful scientists has helped me navigate my own career. Here, I compile some of the advice on doing research that I explicitly or implicitly received during my undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral, and faculty years and use to this day. This is the same advice I give my own students. Some of these points are fairly obvious; others I wish I had implemented earlier in my own career. Abstract:Despite persistent efforts in understanding the creativity of scientists over different career stages, little is known about the underlying dynamics of research topic switching that drives innovation. Here, we analyze the publication records of individual scientists, aiming to quantify their topic switching dynamics and its influence. We find that the co-citing network of papers of a scientist exhibits a clear community structure where each major community represents a research topic. Our analysis suggests that scientists have a narrow distribution of number of topics. However, researchers nowadays switch more frequently between topics than those in the early days. We also find that high switching probability in early career is associated with low overall productivity, yet with high overall productivity in latter career. Interestingly, the average citation per paper, however, is in all career stages negatively correlated with the switching probability. We propose a model that can explain the main observed features.

Abstract:The nature of learning is changing, especially learning in the twenty-first century. It's increasingly becoming more to do with student-centered learning. It emphasizes digital literacy, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills. This chapter revisited online learning environments in terms of differences in the learning styles of Nigerian university students according to their cultural backgrounds. The author also reviewed past research that focused on culturally different learning styles in online learning environments. Of specific interest are the studies that examined the same issue in the twenty-first century. This chapter concluded based on the review of literature that a person's learning style could affect how they react to any learning situation, including learning online; therefore, knowledge of learning styles could help in the selection of appropriate instructional designs and teaching strategies for courses. In the case of the students at the University of Lagos, it was found that students with different learning styles have different responses to online learning within their culture.

Abstract:Due to the interdisciplinary nature of complex systems as a field, students studying complex systems at University level have diverse disciplinary backgrounds. This brings challenges (e.g. wide range of computer programming skills) but also opportunities (e.g. facilitating interdisciplinary interactions and projects) for the classroom. However, there is little published regarding how these challenges and opportunities are handled in teaching and learning Complex Systems as an explicit subject in higher education, and how this differs in comparison to other subject areas. We seek to explore these particular challenges and opportunities via an interview-based study of pioneering teachers and learners (conducted amongst the authors) regarding their experiences. We compare and contrast those experiences, and analyse them with respect to the educational literature. Our discussions explored: approaches to curriculum design, how theories/models/frameworks of teaching and learning informed decisions and experience, how diversity in student backgrounds was addressed, and assessment task design. We found a striking level of commonality in the issues expressed as well as the strategies to handle them, for example a significant focus on problem-based learning, and the use of major student-led creative projects for both achieving and assessing learning outcomes.

Abstract:Radical changes in contemporary society are forcing colleges and universities to alter their time-honored traditions. Economics, demographics, and technology have forever changed the university of the past. The public's demand for accountability is challenging the relevancy of programs, the value of tenure, and the utility of research endeavors. Higher education must focus on serving society's needs to survive in the future. New structures, learning environments, and technologies must be used. To be successful, colleges and universities must be able to respond to opportunities as well as serve as catalysts to create a new vision, have a clear sense of the future, and be organized to energize and support the efforts to carry out the vision. University faculty and administrators must carefully deliberate about higher education--its purpose and its methods--and turn those ideas into action to meet society's needs now and into the next century.

Abstract:English Learning science is complex‐‐a student has at different times to acquire new information, reorganize existing knowledge and even discard cherished ideas. In addressing this issue, the analogy between individual learning and conceptual change in scientific disciplines has been fruitful in providing aspects of a suitableframework for analysing science learning. In this paper a model of learning as conceptual change is developed. It investigates the conditions under which an individual holding a set of conceptions of natural phenomena, when confronted by new experiences will either keep his or her conceptions substantially unaltered in the process of incorporating these experiences, or have to replace them because of their inadequacy. The model illuminates the importance of addressing an individual's existing conceptions. It also pinpoints the importance of an individual's metaphysical commitments in influencing scientific learning.

Abstract:Background Moments of failure during learning present a wide range of opportunities for growth. However, experimental research and meta reviews focused on failure and learning tend to target singular valued learning processes, such as efficient fixes or transfer of conceptual understanding. These analytical decisions conflict with research documenting that teachers and students pursue heterogeneous learning processes following impasses, including preparing to curb recurring problems and preparing for novel impasses. Sample This work focuses on weekend and summer computer science education workshops for middle school students (roughly ages 10–14) in a large city in the United States. Method Drawing on discursive psychology, interaction analysis and portraiture, we examine the selection and prioritization of five valued learning processes in naturalistic discourse around impasses, especially when students and teachers disagree with one another. In three case studies, our approach blends detailed analyses of conversations with longitudinal portraits of students across a year invested in learning coding. Results We document how moments of failure not only create openings for numerous learning opportunities, but also occasion argumentation between students and instructors about which valued learning process they view as worthy of prioritizing and pursuing in the moment, including their rationale for foregrounding a particular process. Conclusion We argue that this work throws light on an under‐examined, yet central tension around which goals and supports – and whose perspective on those goals and supports – to foreground in research and teaching that pursue productive learning from moments of failure.
