Abstract:ABSTRACT The world has been facing the greatest challenge of the 21st century since March 2020, when educational institutions in Brazil had to interrupt their classroom activities, adopting productive isolation and remote teaching. From this perspective, we felt compelled to produce this qualitative work, of a bibliographic character, to draw reflections on technologies in the teaching of English to deaf students in the Pandemic Era. Data show that the world has been changing and a considerable number of teachers and students are facing some challenges due to it, especially as the school reality had to move to a completely different space. Therefore, the public education system needed to reinvent itself to make it possible to share knowledge through digital information and communication technology. Bearing that in mind, we described and indicated possible uses for seven apps and extensions, which allow deaf students to learn through visual, contextualized activities. In conclusion, we advocate that Brazil must invest in scientific research, in strengthening education systems, in education measures, in continuing teacher education and training, and in the development of educational policies that address the new demands of education.

Abstract:Digital technologies present many possibilities to enhance the teaching and learning processes of deaf and hearing students. An example of this are the technological didactic games, which can contribute to learning and digital and social inclusion. Using strategies that promote the inclusion of deaf students is currently a latent need. Thus, this paper aims to study the use of playful resources structured with the Power Point tool in the process of acquisition of Portuguese language in a bilingual proposal with sign language. This study aims to analyze the contribution of technological didactic games in the process of acquisition of Portuguese Language, by high school students, in a classroom context composed of deaf and hearing students, in a school located in the city of Timon, in the state of Maranhão. It is a field research, of exploratory and qualitative nature, which also investigates the representation of deaf culture in the didactic games used, and the contribution of technological resources in educational contexts that do not have access to the internet. To achieve the objectives, in addition to bibliographic references, it was made observation of the classes with the use of games and application of semi-open questionnaire for analysis. The results show that digital games promote engagement and motivation for learning, and that playfulness provides the creation of a more empathetic and inclusive environment.

Abstract:Thus, this research aims to analyze the need for developing digital-based English learning media for deaf children. This qualitative research involved students and teachers at SLB-B Karya Ibu Palembang. A needs analysis was carried out to identify the sustainable situation of deaf children for the development of digital learning media for English lessons. Interview and observation techniques using two types of instruments in the form of interview guides, observation, and field notes were used to collect information about the English language learning needs of deaf students. Research findings identified several needs that underlie the development of digital learning materials for English lessons, namely inadequate English teachers, text-based teaching materials, and less than optimal teaching and learning processes because they are still textbook-based, while deaf students are visual learners. Therefore, the development of digital learning media is very necessary. One of the digital learning media that can be developed is E-books. By using e-books containing media such as pictures, animations, and videos, learning becomes more fun and easier for teachers and deaf students in teaching and learning English.

Abstract:This paper presents a study on potential technology solutions for enhancing the communication process for deaf people on e-learning platforms through translation of Sign Language (SL). Considering SL in its global scope as a spatial-visual language not limited to gestures or hand/forearm movement, but also to other non-dexterity markers such as facial expressions, it is necessary to ascertain whether the existing technology solutions can be effective options for the SL integration on e-learning platforms. Thus, we aim to present a list of potential technology options for the recognition, translation and presentation of SL (and potential problems) through the analysis of assistive technologies, methods and techniques, and ultimately to contribute for the development of the state of the art and ensure digital inclusion of the deaf people in e-learning platforms. The analysis show that some interesting technology solutions are under research and development to be available for digital platforms in general, but yet some critical challenges must solved and an effective integration of these technologies in e-learning platforms in particular is still missing.

Abstract:ABSTRACT This article focuses on reflecting on and discussing the intersections of disability, gender, social class, work, and race in processes of teaching reading and writing to deaf students, in the light of post-critical theories of curriculum. The text questions classroom reports and situations, carried out in a public school for Youth and Adult Education in the city of Belo Horizonte - MG. Methodologically, we held discussions with teachers and participant observation in the daily life of a class at the school in 2021. Based on curricular teaching practices observed, the short story Circuito Fechado (Closed Circuit) by Ricardo Ramos was chosen for theoretical questioning from an intersectional perspective. The investigation revealed challenges in teaching Brazilian Sign Language and Portuguese as a second language. The results indicate the importance of considering the context of the student’s life and the prior knowledge of each student in learning processes. Finally, the study reveals how different social markers can cross curricular practices, providing opportunities for other compositions and other readings of the world.

Abstract:The communication gap between deaf and non-deaf communities arises due to the use of distinct mother languages. A deaf student, who used to communicate in sign language, cannot read fluently materials written in spoken language. This fact causes serious difficulties to deaf students since most didactic materials in higher education are available exclusively in spoken languages. In this paper, we propose a pedagogical model to deliver educational materials in sign language aiming to provide deaf students the same conditions to succeed as the others, i.e., didactical materials available in one’s mother language. Our approach involves the integration of automatic translation technology between spoken and sign language pairs into MOOCs. As a proof of concept, we used this methodology to design a course addressing digital literacy for schoolteachers. The evaluation of the inclusive MOOC and its underlying model reveals its potential, even though further improvements are required, especially regarding evaluation and usability features. Abstract:Inclusive education recognizes and values the diversity of students, guaranteeing their development, participation, and learning within the same classroom. However, this form of social and academic inclusion requires extra effort from teachers and educational institutions. This project, aimed at the deaf community, focused on transmitting in their native language, elementary knowledge of computer networks, which is indispensable in this technological age. Specialized teachers selected the content of the topic of study and proposed a methodology for creating new signs with the participation of deaf telecommunications engineering students and professional interpreters, who adequately transmitted the concepts from one language to another. The educational content created in sign language was organized in an electronic book to facilitate access to the deaf student community. The final product was evaluated in four aspects by deaf people and interpreters, obtaining a positive evaluation by most respondents. In conclusion, the importance of developing this type of inclusive pedagogical support tool aimed at university-level students with disabilities is highlighted.

Abstract:This study is the result of a Masters Program research with the objective of presenting knowledge produced by Brazilian science on the education of the Deaf and its relations with the use of technology, as well as the paths, challenges and directions for what has still not been approached. In this sense, the main objective of this research is to reflect on the convergence between technology and the education of Deaf students through the analysis of dissertations and theses defended in the period from 1999 to 2018, available in the CAPES. To that effect, this investigation, predominantly qualitative, sought to collect data and information from the CAPES dissertations and theses database relative to research conducted on the convergence between areas of education of Deaf students and technology. The analysis and reflections made on the data collected revealed several trends, such as intensification of research relative to the investigative theme, based on the passing of the Brazilian Sign Language Act in 2002, the concentration of research projects in the Brazilian Southern and Southeastern regions, predominance of development of qualitative approach research, the arising and the importance of research developed by Deaf researchers.

Abstract:This article seeks to analyze and remedy progress and development in relation to accessibility for people with disabilities, with the main focus on people with hearing disabilities, using innovative artificial intelligence technologies to engage, motivate and attract technology enthusiasts, professionals in the academic field focused on teaching Libras and also the hearing impaired. In order to achieve the proposed objectives, we opted for a variety of bibliographical and documentary research, listing statistics from the most varied public sources from the various spheres that make up Brazilian health and education. To support the ideas explained in this article, we relied on the expertise of theorists. This research was carried out at Faculdade Metropolitana de Manaus - FAMETRO. The subjects surveyed are part of the student body at this institution. After concluding the research, the results achieved led to a better understanding that the basis for better integration of the hearing impaired in various environments and social positions begins with a primary education that is accessible to the demands of the deaf. The school plays an important role in the teaching and learning process and is responsible for improving the education rates of the hearing impaired, which has an impact on their integration into society. In addition to primary education with a focus on accessibility for the deaf, it is necessary, as we will present later in this article, to introduce more accessible environments, using the wide range of innovative technologies present today, which as a result of their use end up causing the hearing impaired to adapt better to the various environments they frequent.

Abstract:RESUMO O desenvolvimento das habilidades orais em língua estrangeira enfrenta muitas dificuldades no contexto educacional brasileiro, nas modalidades tanto presencial quanto a distância, o que indica uma demanda por maneiras efetivas de ensinar e aprender habilidades orais em inglês. Abordando uma perspectiva ecológica, esta pesquisa buscou investigar as affordances de tecnologias digitais para desenvolver as habilidades orais em língua inglesa por meio das percepções de estudantes de Letras da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais que usaram ferramentas e aplicativos da internet para realizar tarefas semanais de uma disciplina on-line. Para o grupo de aprendizes em questão, as tecnologias digitais interativas permitiram o planejamento e a (re)gravação de suas produções orais, assim como a prática da compreensão oral, possibilitando que eles identificassem seus erros e dificuldades.

Abstract:With the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, educational systems worldwide were abruptly affected and hampered, causing nearly total suspension of all in-person activities in schools, colleges, and universities. Government officials prohibited the physical gatherings in educational institutions to reduce the spread of the virus. Therefore, educational institutions have aggressively shifted to alternative learning methods and strategies such as online-based platforms—to seemingly avoid the disruption of education. However, the switch from the face-to-face setting to an entirely online setting introduced a series of challenges, especially for the deaf or hard-of-hearing students. Various recent studies have revealed the underlying infrastructure used by academic institutions may not be suitable for students with hearing impairments. The goal of this study is to perform a literature review of these studies and extract the pressing challenges that deaf and hard-of-hearing students have been facing since their transition to the online setting. We conducted a systematic literature review of 34 articles that were carefully collected, retrieved, and rigorously categorized from various scholarly databases. The articles, included in this study, focused primarily on highlighting high-demanding issues that deaf students experienced in higher education during the pandemic. This study contributes to the research literature by providing a detailed analysis of technological challenges hindering the learning experience of deaf students. Furthermore, the study extracts takeaways and proposed solutions, from the literature, for researchers, education specialists, and higher education authorities to adopt. This work calls for investigating broader and yet more effective teaching and learning strategies for deaf and hard-of-hearing students so that they can benefit from a better online learning experience.

The Current Status of Research on English Language Teaching for Deaf Students - A Visual Analysis Based on CiteSpace Software

Abstract:This article is in line with the initiatives of “supporting the disadvantaged” and “developing the cause of persons with disabilities” proposed by UNESCO. With using “deaf students” and “English teaching” as the key research terms, efforts are put into searching research in the Web of Science (WOS) core collection database from the year 2000 to 2020. The index results are sorted by publication years, authors, institutions, sources and keywords. Then these statistics are visualized by CiteSpace software in five aspects, including authors, institutions, journal sources and keywords. In total, there include 4866 articles abroad in this study. The number of articles published at home and abroad show an increasing trend. These collected researches focus on the teaching method, teaching strategy, cognitive condition, sign language teaching, and cochlear implant in English teaching for deaf students. The foreign ones emphasize on ability of deaf students themselves and influence force of auxiliary tool. The overall research on English language teaching for deaf students is on the rise, and the research contents and hot topics international literature are somewhat overlapped while somewhat different. The team cooperation and international exchange should be strengthened while complementing each other, in order to promote the overall development of this field.

COVID-19 Educational Side Effects: Pre-service EFL Teachers' Use of Digital Education Tools

Abstract:Recent research has revealed the complexities of incorporating technology tools into lessons, despite the creation of several platforms and applications for education (Wen & Hua, 2020). The radical shift from traditional to online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic compelled teachers and students to develop technical skills to adapt to this new reality. This study explores the impact of this phenomenon on the perspectives of Pre-Service (PS) English language teachers (students in a teacher-training program), regarding the use of technology to support their own English language learning (ELL) process. To achieve this, an explanatory sequential mixed-method approach was employed. A questionnaire consisting of seven Likert scale statements and six open-ended questions was administered to 32 PS teachers from the English Language B.A program at a major public university in Southeast Mexico. Subsequently, eight participants were interviewed. The results indicated that despite most participants having prior knowledge of technological tools and educational platforms before the pandemic, they did not utilize them to support their ELL. However, the findings also revealed a positive response from participants towards continuing to use digital platforms due to perceived benefits experienced during Emergency Remote Teaching. These findings provide additional evidence concerning English learning and teaching and how classes can be more effective and significant using platforms and applications if classrooms are well equipped.

Translation and Translanguaging in Multilingual Contexts

Abstract:Abstract This paper presents the teaching innovation project AUDIOSUB, which aimed at assessing the didactic potential of audio description (AD) and subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing (SDH) in foreign language education. Within an online setting, 25 undergraduates of English Studies in a Spanish university worked collaboratively for two months and a half, in groups of five, so as to provide accessibility to complete short films. To that end, they were provided with a number of ad hoc tutorials and guidelines on technical issues related to AD and SDH, the two media accessibility modes used for this proposal. A pre-experiment was designed for data collection: pre- and post- writing and oral production tests, as well as general translation pre- and post- tests, were administered, and quantitative data were exploited using SPSS; pre-and post- questionnaires and observation were also used to triangulate and complement the analysis. The results show evidence of improvement both in written production and in general translation skills thanks to the pedagogical application of media accessibility and point towards a more systematic exploitation of didactic SDH and AD in the foreign language learning context.

Abstract:How can an inclusive classroom for deaf students be successful? The use of metacommunication strategies by teachers and hearing peers seems promising. Schools that promote this approach tend to improve deaf students' psychosocial development and academic achievement. However, this is not a general rule. The present study identifies the elements of success, with the investigators basing their analysis on extensive observation of 4 bilingual classes conducted by regular education and specialized teachers. The study was conducted in 3 public elementary schools in Brasilia, Brazil. Data were collected through direct observation (156 hours) and video recording (34 hours). Results were qualitatively analyzed from a microgenetic perspective. The investigators devised 14 categories of social interaction, e.g., visual contact and responsivity, multimodal communication, co-construction of meanings, flexible use of space, and sign language instruction for hearing students.
E-learning is a burden for the deaf and hard of hearing

Abstract:When considering deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) population, research recognizes that fatigue due to communication challenges and multi-focal attention allocation is a significant concern. Given the putative heightened demands of distance learning on deaf and hard of hearing students, we investigate how an online environment might differently affect deaf and hard of hearing participants, compared to hearing participants, Portuguese Sign Language (PSL) users and non-users. Our findings show that the deaf and hard of hearing group present higher values in the post-task fatigue rates with significant differences from the hearing group (non-PSL users). Furthermore, our results revealed an association between post-task fatigue rates and lower performance scores for the deaf and hard of hearing group, and the gap is significantly bigger when compared with the hearing group (non-PSL users). We also found evidence for high levels of post-task fatigue and lower performance scores in the hearing group PSL users. These novel data contribute to the discussion concerning of the pros and cons of digital migration and help redesign more accessible and equitable methodologies and approaches, especially in the DHH educational field, ultimately supporting policymakers in redefining optimal learning strategies.

Abstract:This research focuses on the development of digital-based learning media for individuals with hearing impairments. The aim of this study is to address the challenges faced by deaf learners in accessing and engaging with educational content effectively. The research question guiding this study is: "How can digital learning media be developed to cater to the specific needs and learning preferences of individuals with hearing impairments? “To investigate this question, a mixed-methods approach was employed, combining qualitative interviews and surveys with deaf learners and quantitative data analysis. The research team developed a prototype of a digital learning platform tailored to the unique requirements of deaf learners, incorporating visual and interactive elements to enhance their comprehension and engagement. This research includes Research and Development (R&D) research used to produce certain products and test the effectiveness of these products. The findings of the study reveal the significance of designing inclusive digital learning media that consider the sensory and communication needs of individuals with hearing impairments. The interviews and surveys highlighted the positive impact of the developed digital learning platform on the learning experiences of deaf learners, as it facilitated better understanding, increased motivation, and encouraged active participation. This research contributes to the field of inclusive education by providing insights into the design and implementation of digital learning media for individuals with hearing impairments. The developed platform offers a valuable resource for educators and instructional designers to create accessible and engaging learning experiences for deaf learners.
O ENSINO DE LÍNGUAS E O AUDIOVISUAL: NOVAS ESTRATÉGIAS PARA O APRENDIZADO DO INGLÊS NO CONTEXTO REMOTO

Abstract:Introdução: Os grupos do Programa de Educação Tutorial (PET) baseiam-se na tríade universitária ensino-pesquisa-extensão. Promovido pelo Ministério da Educação, o PET Conexões Gestão Política-Pedagógica (PET-GPP) da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco direciona ações voltadas para a comunidade como alicerce de sua atuação. É sabido que, diante da pandemia da COVID-19, foi necessário a adequação de metodologias de ensino para o modelo remoto. A partir do Curso de Línguas Popular Aberto à Comunidade (CLIPAC), promovido pelo PET-GPP, nasceu o projeto “CLIPAC DROPS”. Objetivos: Este projeto tem como objetivo geral dialogar com o/a estudante deste curso sobre os assuntos visitados previamente nas aulas síncronas do projeto maior. Os específicos foram: (1) revisitar dinamicamente os assuntos do curso de línguas; (2) criar um material audiovisual próprio do grupo; (3) promover um recurso “On Demand” entre os/as alunos/as. Material e métodos: Para concretizar o DROPS, foram utilizados: “smartphone” para captura de vídeo e som; programa de texto “Word” para a sistematização dos roteiros de gravação; programa “Sony Vegas PRO” para edição de vídeo. Primeiramente, foi elencado um idioma específico como projeto “piloto” da ação e o escolhido foi o Inglês. Com isso, dialogou-se com os/as professores/as do CLIPAC responsáveis por esta língua a fim de que pudessem ser listados os tópicos abordados no projeto e a sequência de gravação de vídeos com o calendário de aulas. Resultados: O projeto resultou na gravação de sete vídeos de curta duração com base no idioma selecionado. Os temas abordados foram desde vocabulários do dia a dia da língua inglesa, até elementos gramaticais da sentença e os diversos tempos verbais. Ao todo, o projeto somou mais de 80 visualizações e um bom retorno avaliativo, não sistemático, por parte dos alunos/as. Conclusão: Entende-se que o projeto criou uma nova forma de aprendizagem audiovisual para os/as alunos/as do CLIPAC a partir de uma ferramenta virtual que pode ser assistida onde e quando houver interesse. Espera-se um próximo módulo com mais aulas de inglês e novas temáticas; expandir o público-alvo do projeto para toda a comunidade; e sincronizar mais eficientemente o DROPS com as aulas síncronas do CLIPAC.

Abstract:RELC Journal, Ahead of Print. The COVID-19 pandemic ushered in a new era of technological tools that were used by language teachers to develop their students' English language skills. As a result of the sudden shift to online instruction, teachers at the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics Academy middle school had little time to prepare and had limited resources to deliver an innovative curriculum. However, when schools returned to in-person learning and when COVID-19 relief funds were allocated to the school site to purchase new technology, these teachers gained access to more technology in their classrooms than ever before. This paper describes how teachers at this site leveraged the technological tools to achieve two goals: making the curriculum comprehensible and engaging for English learners to raise assessment scores; and using the technology to connect with their students. To achieve these goals, teachers were taught how to coalesce their tools in three ways: translating texts; digitizing their paper-based lessons; and "mirroring" input from their tablet computers to a larger screen. During an eight-week training, teachers implemented these innovations in their classrooms, reported their successes and reflected on their practice. This paper describes how four teachers used these tools inside their classrooms for innovative English language instruction.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: We aimed to analyze the vocal self-perception of Brazilian teachers and their communication needs, vocal signs and symptoms, and voice-related lifestyles during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic and, based on this information, to develop guidance materials intended for dissemination to these teachers and the general community.METHODS: An online questionnaire designed for this survey was distributed via the researchers' networks and was available for completion by any teacher, except those who were not working at the time. There were 1,253 teachers from all over Brazil, of both sexes, covering a wide age range, working at different levels of education, and most with more than ten years of experience. Descriptive and inferential analyses of the data were performed.RESULTS: On comparing the prepandemic period with the current one, participants indicated voice improvements. In contrast, they presented symptoms such as dry throat, effort in addressing remote classes, hoarseness after classes, and difficulties with the use of headphones, among others. They further indicated stress, general fatigue, impact of the pandemic on mental health, and the overlapping of many home tasks with professional tasks. Some smoked, and others hydrated insufficiently.CONCLUSION: Although teachers generally noticed voice improvements during the pandemic, a proportion of them perceived worsening of voices. Many indicated several factors in which speech-language pathologists could guide them with the aim of improving performance and comfort during remote and hybrid classes, an initiative that will positively impact not only their voice and communication but also their quality of life.
