Abstract:In the research ecosystem's quest towards having deployable organic light-emitting diodes with higher-energy emission (e.g., blue light), we advocate focusing on fluorescent emitters, due to their relative stability and colour purity, and developing design strategies to significantly improve their efficiencies. We propose that all triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC) emitters would make good candidates for triplet fusion-enhanced OLEDs ("FuLEDs"), due to the energetically uphill nature of the photophysical process, and their common requirements. We demonstrate this with the low-cost sky-blue 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran (DPBF). Having satisfied the criteria for TTA-UC, we show DPBF as a photon upconverter (I th 92 mW cm-2), and henceforth demonstrate it as a bright emitter for FuLEDs. Notably, the devices achieved 6.5% external quantum efficiency (above the ∼5% threshold without triplet contribution), and triplet-exciton-fusion-generated fluorescence contributes up to 44% of the electroluminescence, as shown by transient measurements. Here, triplet fusion translates to a quantum yield (Φ TTA-UC) of 19%, at an electrical excitation of ∼0.01 mW cm-2. The enhancement is meaningful for commercial blue OLED displays. We also found DPBF to have decent hole mobilities of ∼0.08 cm2 V-1 s-1. This additional finding can lead to DPBF being used in other capacities in various printable electronics.

Abstract:Efficient and stable blue luminescent organic materials are highly demanded in the field of organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) but still remain challenging. In this work, two new sky‐blue luminescent molecules comprised of electron acceptor of benzophenone and electron donors of spiro[acridine‐9,9'‐fluorene] and carbazole are designed and synthesized, and their thermal stability, electrochemical behaviors, photophysical properties, carrier transport ability and electroluminescence performance are investigated. They exhibit distinct merits of aggregation‐induced delayed fluorescence with high solid‐state photoluminescence quantum yields, balanced bipolar carrier transport and high horizontal dipole ratios. Highly efficient OLEDs using both molecules as emitters are obtained, which radiate strong sky‐blue light and provide outstanding external quantum efficiencies of up to 33.3% with small roll‐offs. Towards Efficient Blue Delayed- Fluorescence Molecules by Modulating Torsion Angle Between Electron Donor and Acceptor

Abstract:Constructing blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence materials for high-performance organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) remains challenging due to the intrinsically strong intramolecular charge transfer nature of the nearly orthogonal connection of electron donor (D) and acceptor (A), which results in long-wavelength emission. Herein, an effective delayed-fluorescence design strategy of modulating D-A torsion angles is proposed and efficient sky-blue, pure-blue, and deep-blue delayed-fluorescence molecules consisting of a xanthenone acceptor and carbazole-based donors are created by decreasing the torsion angles. They exhibit strong delayed fluorescence with high photoluminescence quantum yields of 85-94% in doped films, and their delayed -fluorescence lifetimes are elongated from 1.0 to 27.6 mu s as the torsion angles decrease. These molecules can function as excellent emitters in OLEDs, providing efficient electroluminescence peaking at 442 nm (CIEx,y = 0.15, 0.08), 462 nm (CIEx,y = 0.15, 0.18), and 482 nm (CIEx,y = 0.17, 0.30) with state-of-the-art external quantum efficiencies of up to 22.2%, 33.7%, and 32.1%, respectively, demonstrating the proposed molecular design for efficient blue delayed-fluorescence molecules is successful and promising.

Abstract:Organic compounds that exhibit highly efficient, stable blue emission are required to realize inexpensive organic light-emitting diodes for future displays and lighting applications. Here, we define the design rules for increasing the electroluminescence efficiency of blue-emitting organic molecules that exhibit thermally activated delayed fluorescence. We show that a large delocalization of the highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital in these charge-transfer compounds enhances the rate of radiative decay considerably by inducing a large oscillator strength even when there is a small overlap between the two wavefunctions. A compound based on our design principles exhibited a high rate of fluorescence decay and efficient up-conversion of triplet excitons into singlet excited states, leading to both photoluminescence and internal electroluminescence quantum yields of nearly 100%.

Abstract:Highly efficient deep-blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) is observed from a charge-transfer compound bis[4-(3,6-dimethoxycarbazole)phenyl]sulfone (DMOC-DPS). In comparison with the previously reported carbazole/sulfone derivative with tert-butyl substituents on the carbazole donors, DMOC-DPS exhibits a much shorter excited-state lifetime in both an aromatic solution and an organic thin film, because the change of the substituent on the donor affects the molecular energy levels of the first singlet (S1) and triplet (T1) excited states in different ways, decreasing the energy gap between S1 and T1 (ΔEST). An organic light emitting diode (OLED) based on DMOC-DPS achieves a maximum external electroluminescence quantum efficiency (EQE) of 14.5% and reduced efficiency roll-off, with Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.16, 0.16), owing to efficient exciton harvesting that occurs through triplet-to-singlet up-conversion.
A Bipolar Delayed Fluorescence Luminogen with Fast Reverse Intersystem Crossing and High Horizontal Dipole Orientation for High‐Performance Sky‐Blue and White OLEDs

Abstract:The development of robust luminescent materials plays a key role for organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs). Herein, a tailor‐made sky‐blue delayed fluorescence luminogen (DCPC‐BP‐SFAC) containing a carbonyl acceptor and spiro[acridine‐9,9″‐fluorene] and 9,9″‐(cyclohexane‐1,1‐diylbis(4,1‐phenylene))bis(9H‐carbazole) donors is explored, which holds merits of excellent thermal stability, strong photoluminescence, balanced carrier transport, and horizontal dipole orientation. Owing to a charge‐transfer dominated singlet state and a charge‐transfer and local‐excitation hybrid triplet state, DCPC‐BP‐SFAC has a small energy gap between singlet and triplet as well as a large spin–orbit coupling constant, which result in a fast reverse intersystem crossing process and thus efficient delayed fluorescence. High‐performance sky‐blue OLEDs with outstanding external quantum efficiencies (ηext) reaching 32.6% are achieved based on DCPC‐BP‐SFAC, benefiting from high exciton utilization and large light out‐coupling efficiency. Moreover, using DCPC‐BP‐SFAC as blue emitter and host material simultaneously, efficient all‐fluorescence out‐of‐phase sensitizing white OLEDs without interlayer are fabricated, providing high ηext of up to 21.6% and stable warm‐white light with a high color rendering index of 84. The outstanding electroluminescence performances demonstrate the great potentials of DCPC‐BP‐SFAC in practical display and lighting devices. A tailor‐made sky‐blue delayed fluorescence luminogen with strong photoluminescence, fast reverse intersystem crossing, balanced carrier transport, horizontal dipole orientation, and large light out‐coupling efficiency is explored, which furnishes outstanding external quantum efficiencies of 32.6% as emitter in sky‐blue organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) and 21.6% as emitter and host simultaneously in all‐fluorescence white OLEDs.

Abstract:The design and development of efficient emitters for deep-blue OLEDs with CIEy < 0.10 remains a challenge. A new series of tetracoordinated difluoroboron (BF2)-enabled thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) materials with D-A-BF2-type and D-pi-A-BF2-type frameworks for sky-blue to deep-blue emitters were designed and developed. The emission colors could be effectively tuned through regulating the degree of conjugation between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) by simply introducing a methyl group into the phenyl ring to adjust the molecular geometries and change the acceptor moieties, which were strongly supported by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations and electrochemical studies. All the tetracoordinated difluoroboron TADF emitters are air-stable and insensitive to moisture, and they are strongly emissive in degassed toluene peaking at 435-471 nm with high photoluminescence quantum efficiencies (PLQYs) of 94-99%. The BF2-MPCz-doped sky-blue OLED demonstrated a peak EQE of 13.8% with a L-max value of 20853 cd m(-2) and CIE coordinates of (0.175, 0.354), and the BF2-DMCz-doped deep-blue OLED achieved a peak EQE of 8.4% with CIE coordinates of (0.149, 0.083). This indicates that the BF2-enabled TADF materials can act as efficient emitters for the fabrication of sky-blue to deep-blue OLEDs.

Abstract:Abstract As promising luminescent materials for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), thermally activated delayed fluorescence materials are booming vigorously in recent years, but robust blue ones still remain challenging. Herein, we report three highly efficient blue and deep-blue delayed fluorescence materials comprised of a weak electron acceptor chromeno[3,2-c]carbazol-8(5H)-one with a rigid polycyclic structure and a weak electron donor spiro[acridine-9,9’-xanthene]. They hold distinguished merits of excellent photoluminescence quantum yields (99%), ultrahigh horizontal transition dipole ratios (93.6%), and fast radiative transition and reverse intersystem crossing, which furnish superb blue and deep-blue electroluminescence with Commission Internationale de I’Eclairage coordinates (CIE x,y ) of (0.14, 0.18) and (0.14, 0.15) and record-beating external quantum efficiencies ( η ext s) of 43.4% and 41.3%, respectively. Their efficiency roll-offs are successfully reduced by suppressing triplet-triplet and singlet-singlet annihilations. Moreover, high-performance deep-blue and green hyperfluorescence OLEDs are achieved by utilizing these materials as sensitizers for multi-resonance delayed fluorescence dopants, providing state-of-the-art η ext s of 32.5% (CIE x,y = 0.14, 0.10) and 37.6% (CIE x,y = 0.32, 0.64), respectively, as well as greatly advanced operational lifetimes. These splendid results can surely inspire the development of blue and deep-blue luminescent materials and devices.

Abstract:Metal-free thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters have emerged as promising candidate materials for highly efficient and low-cost organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Here, a novel acceptor 2-cyanopyrazine is selected for the construction of blue TADF molecules via computer-assisted molecular design. Both theoretical prediction and experimental photophysical data indicate a small S1-T1 energy gap (ΔE ST) and a relative large fluorescence rate (k F) in an o-phenylene-bridged 2-cyanopyrazine/3,6-di-tert-butylcarbazole compound (TCzPZCN). The k F value of 3.7 × 107 s-1 observed in a TCzPZCN doped film is among the highest in the TADF emitters with a ΔE ST smaller than 0.1 eV. Blue TADF emission is observed in a TCzPZCN doped film with a short TADF lifetime of 1.9 μs. The OLEDs using TCzPZCN as emitter exhibit a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 7.6% with low-efficiency roll-off. A sky-blue device containing a derivative of TCzPZCN achieves an improved EQE maximum of 12.2% by suppressing the non-radiative decay at T1.

Abstract:Efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) has been characterized for a carbazole/sulfone derivative in both solutions and doped films. A pure blue organic light emitting diode (OLED) based on this compound demonstrates a very high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of nearly 10% at low current density. Because TADF only occurs in a bipolar system where donor and acceptor centered (3)ππ* states are close to or higher than the triplet intramolecular charge transfer ((3)CT) state, control of the π-conjugation length of both donor and acceptor is considered to be as important as breaking the π-conjugation between them in blue TADF material design.

Abstract:Organic thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) materials can harvest 100% of the electrically generated excitons as a result of their small singlet–triplet energy difference. However, maximizing the external quantum efficiency (EQE) of a device also requires enhancing the light out‐coupling efficiency. This work presents a new acceptor–donor–acceptor (ADA) emitter employing an indolocarbazole donor and diphenyltriazine acceptors that show nearly‐completely horizontal orientation regardless of the host matrix, leading to a sky‐blue organic light‐emitting diode (λEL = 483 nm, CIE coordinates of 0.17, 0.32) with EQEMAX of 22.1%, a maximum luminance of 7800 cd m−2, and blue emission.

Abstract:Efficient blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence materials with intramolecular hydrogen bonds are developed. They exhibit high thermal stability, excellent photoluminescence quantum yields, and large horizontal dipole ratios and can provide outstanding electroluminescence efficiencies with long device operational lifetimes. Efficient blue organic luminescent materials are highly desired for full‐color displays and white lighting based on the organic light‐emitting diode (OLED) technique, but the exploration of robust blue emitters remains challenging. In this work, a series of efficient blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence materials comprised of a benzonitrile acceptor, pyridine bridge, and carbazole‐based donors is designed and synthesized. Intramolecular hydrogen bonds are formed in these molecules, which improve molecular planarity and rigidity. These molecules exhibit excellent thermal stability, high photoluminescence quantum yields, and large horizontal dipole ratios. Highly efficient non‐doped and doped OLEDs are fabricated using these molecules as emitters, providing deep‐blue to sky‐blue lights with outstanding maximum external quantum efficiencies and good operational device lifetime. These results indicate that building intramolecular hydrogen bonds can be an effective strategy for the construction of efficient and robust blue emitters for OLED applications.

Abstract:Multiple donor–acceptor‐type carbazole–benzonitrile derivatives that exhibit thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) are the state of the art in efficiency and stability in sky‐blue organic light‐emitting diodes. However, such a motif still suffers from low reverse intersystem crossing rates (kRISC) with emission peaks <470 nm. Here, a weak acceptor of cyanophenyl is adopted to replace the stronger cyano one to construct blue emitters with multiple donors and acceptors. Both linear donor–π–donor and acceptor–π–acceptor structures are observed to facilitate delocalized excited states for enhanced mixing between charge‐transfer and locally excited states. Consequently, a high kRISC of 2.36 × 106 s−1 with an emission peak of 456 nm and a maximum external quantum efficiency of 22.8% is achieved. When utilizing this material to sensitize a blue multiple‐resonance TADF emitter, the corresponding device simultaneously realizes a maximum external quantum efficiency of 32.5%, CIEy ≈ 0.12, a full width at half maximum of 29 nm, and a T80 (time to 80% of the initial luminance) of > 60 h at an initial luminance of 1000 cd m−2.

Abstract:Overcoming exciton quenching and improving electroluminescence (EL) performances continue to pose persistent challenges in the development of efficient deep blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters. Herein, an asymmetric multi-donors strategy is employed that provides the potential of establishing multiple radiative transition channels for fluorescence emission and reverse intersystem crossing (RISC), while allowing flexible modulation of packing modes in single-crystal state and optimization of morphology in films by modifying the substitution site of the donor units. As a result, intermolecular pi-pi interactions are effectively alleviated and a very smooth surface with a reduced defect density is simultaneously achieved, which can significantly reduce the density of triplet excitons, accelerate the charge transfer rate, and enhance carrier injection efficiency. Consequently, a super-high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 99% and fast kRISC of 1.1 x 105 s-1 are concurrently achieved for the proof-of-concept emitter 3,4-Cz-SF-SFAC. The corresponding deep-blue organic light-emitting diode (OLED) demonstrates an exceptional external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 31.1%, accompanied by an emission peak at 457 nm, one of the preeminent TADF materials within the deep blue region, ranking among the most efficient OLEDs with an EL spectra below 460 nm on record. An innovative molecular design strategy employing an asymmetric D-A-D' structure is proposed. This strategic approach leads to the establishment of multiple reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) channels and yields superior packing modes and morphology. The corresponding device achieves an exceptional external quantum efficiency of 31.1% with an emission peak at 457 nm, one of the preeminent materials within the deep blue region.image

Abstract:Luminogens with high photoluminescence efficiencies and high triplet (T1) energy levels are desired to achieve high‐performance white organic light‐emitting diodes (WOLEDs). In this work, a sky‐blue luminogen (DCB‐BP‐SFAC) with enhanced delayed fluorescence in aggregated state, bipolar carrier transport ability and high T1 energy level is developed. DCB‐BP‐SFAC exhibits bright sky‐blue electroluminescence (EL) in both non‐doped and doped OLEDs with maximum external quantum efficiencies of 14.8% and 23.5%. DCB‐BP‐SFAC can function as efficient host for green, orange and red phosphorescent materials as well as thermally activated delayed fluorescence emitters with excellent EL performance. In addition, fluorescence/phosphorescence hybrid and all‐fluorescence WOLEDs with a single emissive layer are fabricated by adopting DCB‐BP‐SFAC as emitter and host simultaneously. The all‐fluorescence WOLED shows two‐color warm‐white light with good EL efficiencies of 47.1 cd A−1, 46.2 lm W−1, and 19.1%. The excellent performance of these OLEDs demonstrates the great application potential of DCB‐BP‐SFAC in practical display and lighting devices.

Abstract:Abstract Blue/deep‐blue emission is an essential core element for application in organic optoelectronics, but it remains an enormous challenge in organic afterglow owing to the difficulties in the stabilization of the high‐lying triplet excited state. Here, an effective approach to develop a deep‐blue delayed fluorescence (DF) supramolecular assembly with long lifetime and record‐high quantum efficiency up to 0.62 s and 81%, respectively, is proposed via the increase in the delocalization degree of guest molecules induced by the co‐assembly of guest molecules with Laponite (Lap) achieved via simple solvent‐free grinding approach. Thereby the excitation energy of singlet excited states of π–π* transition (S 1 ( 1 (π, π*))) decreases, making the π–π* transition of CC bonds as the main intersystem crossing (ISC) pathway from S 1 to triplet excited states (T 1 ) dominate the blue DF spectrum. Surprisingly, (TPA) n @Lap still exhibits excellent afterglow characteristics with long lifetime of 0.567–0.481 s and high quantum efficiency of 72%–41% even in aqueous environments with water content from 20% to 98%. Benefiting from the excellent property, the visual detection of Fe 3+ in water environment and high‐level information encryption application are exhibited. These results provide an important foundation for the development of blue/deep‐blue afterglow materials with high efficiency and may inspire extensive applications in the future.

Abstract:To increase the fluorescence quantum yield of hybrid local and charge-transfer (HLCT) material, we introduce a symmetric linear D-pi-A-pi-D structure into molecular design and synthesized a new blue emitter, 2,2 '-(2 ',3 ',5 ',6 '-tetrafluoro-[1,1%4 ',1 ''-terpheny1]-4,4 ''-diyebis(1-(4-(tert-butyl)pheny1)-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole) (4FBTPI). Organic light-emitting devices employing 4FBTPI as a dopant emitter show good performances, with CIE (Commission Internationale de l'Enclairage) coordinates of (0.15, 0.09), which is very close to NTSC blue light standard (0.14, 0.08), current efficiencies (CE) of 6.03 cd A(-1), external quantum efficiencies of 6.94%. This performance is comparable to those of recently reported state-of-the-art deep-blue materials with CIEy < 0.10. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Delocalizing electron distribution in thermally activated delayed fluorophors for high-efficiency and long-lifetime blue electroluminescence

Abstract:Blue thermally activated delayed fluorescent emitters are promising for the next generation of organic light-emitting diodes, yet their performance still cannot meet the requirements for commercialization. Here we establish a design rule for highly efficient and stable thermally activated delayed fluorescent emitters by introducing an auxiliary acceptor that could delocalize electron distributions, enhancing molecular stability in both the negative polaron and triplet excited state, while also accelerating triplet-to-singlet up-conversion and singlet radiative processes simultaneously. Proof-of-concept thermally activated delayed fluorescent compounds, based on a multi-carbazole-benzonitrile structure, exhibit near-unity photoluminescent quantum yields, short-lived delays and improved photoluminescent and electroluminescent stabilities. A deep-blue organic light-emitting diode using one of these molecules as a sensitizer for a multi-resonance emitter achieves a remarkable time to 95% of initial luminance of 221 h at an initial luminance of 1,000 cd m-2, a maximum external quantum efficiency of 30.8% and Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage coordinates of (0.14, 0.17).
High-Performance Deep-Blue Electroluminescence from Multi-resonance TADF Emitters with Spirofluorene-Fused Double Boron Framework

Abstract:The development of multi-resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) materials in the deep-blue region is highly desirable. A usual approach involves constructing extended MR-TADF framework; however, it may also intensify aggregate-caused quenching issues and thereby reduce device efficiency. In this study, we develop a molecular design strategy that fuses the MR-TADF skeleton with 9,9′-spirobifluorene (SF) units to create advanced deep-blue emitters. The SF moiety facilitates high-yield one-shot bora-Friedel-Crafts reaction towards extended skeleton and mitigates interchromophore interactions as a steric group. Our findings reveal that orbital interactions at the fusion site significantly influence the electronic structure, and optimizing the fusion mode allows for the development of emitters with extended conjugation length while maintaining non-bonding character. The proof-of-concept emitter exhibits narrowband emission in the deep-blue region, a near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield, and a fast kRISC of 2.4×105 s-1. These exceptional properties enable the corresponding sensitizer-free OLED to achieve a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax) of 39.0% and Commission Internationale de l′Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.13, 0.09). Furthermore, the hyperfluorescence device realizes an EQEmax of 40.4% with very low efficiency roll off.
