Abstract:The ability to fabricate bimetallic clusters with atomic precision offers promising prospects for elucidating the correlations between their structures and properties. Nevertheless, achieving precise control at the atomic level in the production of clusters, including the quantity of dopant, characteristic of ligands, charge state of precursors, and structural transformation, have remained a challenge. Herein, we report the synthesis, purification, and characterization of a new bimetallic hydride cluster, [AuCu11(H){S2P(OiPr)2}6(C≡CPh)3] (AuCu11H). The hydride position in AuCu11H was determined using DFT calculations. AuCu11H comprises a ligand-stabilized defective fcc Au@Cu11 cuboctahedron. AuCu11H is metastable and undergoes a spontaneous transformation through ligand exchange into the isostructural [AuCu11(Cl){S2P(OiPr)2}6(C≡CPh)3] (AuCu11Cl) and into the complete cuboctahedral [AuCu12{S2P(OiPr)2}6(C≡CPh)4]+ (AuCu12) through an increase in nuclearity. These structural transformations were tracked by NMR and mass spectrometry.

Abstract:Bimetallic nanoclusters Au19Cu30 with chemical composition of [Au19Cu30(C CR)(22)(Ph3P)(6)Cl-2](NO3)(3) (where RC C is from 3-ethynylthiophene (H3C4S-3-C CH) or ethynylbenzene (PhC CH)) has been synthesized. Single X-ray structural analysis reveals that Au19Cu30 has a multishelled core structure of Au@Au-12@Cu-30@Au-6, comprising a centered icosahedral Au-13 (Au@Au-12) surrounded by an icosidodecahedral Cu-30 shell and an outmost shell of a chairlike hexagonal Au-6. The alkynyl carbon is bound to the hollow sites on the Au19Cu30 nanocluster surface, which is a novel interfacial binding mode in alkynyl-protected alloy nano clusters. The Cu-30 icosidodecahedron is unprecedented and Au19Cu30 represents the first alkynyl-protected Au-Cu alloy nanocluster.

Abstract:Thiolate-protected gold nanoclusters (denoted as Au m (SR) n or Au n L m ) have received extensive attention both experimentally and theoretically. Understanding the growth mode of the Au4 unit in Au m (SR) n is of great significance for experimental synthesis and the search for new gold clusters. In this work, we first build six clusters of Au7(AuCl2)3, Au12(AuCl2)4, Au16(AuCl2)6, Au22(AuCl2)6, and Au30(AuCl2)6 with the Au4 unit as the basic building blocks. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that these newly designed clusters have high structural and electronic stabilities. Based on chemical bonding analysis, the electronic structures of these clusters follow the superatom network (SAN) model. Inspired by the cluster structures, we further predicted an Au4 two-dimensional (2D) monolayer and a three-dimensional (3D) crystal using graphene and diamond as templates, respectively. The computational results demonstrate that the two structures have high dynamic, thermal, and mechanical stabilities, and both structures exhibit metallic properties according to the band structures calculated at the HSE06 level. The chemical bonding analysis by the solid-state natural density partitioning (SSAdNDP) method indicates that they are superatomic crystals assembled by two electron Au4 - superatoms. With this construction strategy, the new bonding pattern and properties of Au n L m are studied and the structure types of gold are enriched.

Abstract:Single-helical or double-helical structures are common in all living organisms, such as RNA and DNA. Helical assembly has been found in the artificial nanoparticles, but how they do so remains poorly understood. Here, we exploit atomically precise Au6Cu6 alloy nanoparticles (or called nanoclusters) as building blocks to construct a single-helical Au12Cu12 superstructure in an operative path, thereby providing access to currently elusive mechanistic pathways. We propose that the thermodynamically viable linear-to-bent process at a couple of Au6Cu6 nanoclusters imparted by the organic ligands seems to be critical for the helical-nanostructured arrangement of Au12Cu12. This study could help to offer new design rules for the exquisitely helical structure assembled from nanoparticles.
Structural Isomerism in Bimetallic Ag20Cu12 Nanoclusters

Abstract:Structural isomers of atomically precise metal nanoclusters are highly sought after for investigating structure-property relationships in nanostructured materials. However, they are extremely rare, particularly those of alloys, primarily due to the challenges in their synthesis and structural characterization. Herein, for the first time, a pair of bimetallic isomeric AgCu nanoclusters has been controllably synthesized and structurally characterized. These two isomers share an identical molecular formula, Ag20Cu12(C≡CR)24 (denoted as Ag20Cu12-1 and Ag20Cu12-2; HC≡CR is 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenylacetylene). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction data analysis revealed that Ag20Cu12-1 possesses an Ag17Cu4 core composed of two interpenetrating hollow Ag11Cu2 structures. This core is stabilized by four different types of surface motifs: eight -C≡CR, one Cu(C≡CR)2, one Ag3Cu3(C≡CR)6, and two Cu2(C≡CR)4 units. Ag20Cu12-2 features a bitetrahedron Ag14 core, which is stabilized by three Ag2Cu4(C≡CR)8 units. Interestingly, Ag20Cu12-2 undergoes spontaneous transformation to Ag20Cu12-1 in the solution-state. Density functional theory calculations explain the electronic and optical properties and confirm the higher relative stability of Ag20Cu12-1 compared to Ag20Cu12-2. The controlled synthesis and structural isomerism of alloy nanoclusters presented in this work will stimulate and broaden research on nanoscale isomerism.

Abstract:The structural determination of alloy hydride nanoclusters with high nuclearity remains challenging. We herein report the synthetic procedure and the structural elucidation of an Au–Ag alloy nanocluster with 12 hydride ligands―[Au16Ag43H12(SPhCl2)34]5–. The structure of [Au16Ag43H12(SPhCl2)34]5– comprises an Au16Ag3 kernel that is stabilized by 12 hydride ligands, 8 thiol bridges, and 6 Agm(SR)n motif units. The 12 hydride ligands in Au16Ag43 have been confirmed by both 2H NMR and ESI-MS measurements, and their positions have been theoretically evaluated, located at the interlayer between the Au16Ag3 kernel and the Ag-SR shell. The metastable [Au16Ag43H12(SPhCl2)34]5– can convert to [Au12Ag32(SPhCl2)30]4– spontaneously. Structurally, the Au16Ag3 kernel of [Au16Ag43H12(SPhCl2)34]5– could be regarded as the overlapping of two hollow Au8Ag3 cages via sharing an Ag3 line, which is in contrast to the solely icosahedral Au12 kernel of [Au12Ag32(SPhCl2)30]4–. Besides, the overall construction of Au16Ag43 or Au12Ag32 follows a complementing or overlapping assembly mode, respectively. Abstract:Illustrating molecualr strucure of metal nanoclusters with the protection of multiple ligands is the prequisite to understand strucure-property relationships of nano or bulk materials with hybrid interfaces. Reported herein is the synthesis, total structure and electronic strucure analysis of a new Ag/Cu alloy nanocluster with triple-ligand protection. The cluster with the formula of Ag10Cu16(C8H9S)16(PPh3)4(CF3CO2)8 has been attained in one-pot in a simple way. X-ray single crystal analysis displays its unique metal framework and more importantly rich interface structures. The ligands of phosphine, thioate and carboxylic acid are coordinated to the surface of the cluster in distinctive modes. The electronic structure of the cluster has been revealed by density functional theory, showing that it is a 2-electron superatom with jellium configurations of 1S2. In good accodance with the closure of geometric and electronic structures, the cluster exhibits moderate stability, which makes it a candidate for further application in many fields.

Abstract:Alloy nanoclusters protected by ligands were widely studied due to the synergistic effect of metal atoms, and they exhibit enhanced properties in different fields, such as bio-imaging and catalysis. Herein, we obtained Au8Ag17(PPh3)10Cl10 nanoclusters via one-step simple synthesis. The atomically precise crystal structure was determined by x-ray crystallography. It is found that the rod-like Au8Ag17 nanoclusters were composed of two Au4Ag9 icosahedrons via sharing the same Ag atom. Two Au atoms occupy the center of icosahedrons, and the other six Au atoms are all at the neck sites. Four kinds of Cl–Ag connecting modes were observed in Au8Ag17 nanoclusters. Moreover, the ultraviolet–visible absorption spectrum shows that the prominent absorption peaks of Au8Ag17 nanoclusters are at ∼395 and 483 nm. This work provides a feasible strategy to synthesize alloy nanoclusters with precise composition via doping engineering.

Abstract:Metal precursors employed in the bottom-up synthesis of metal nanoclusters (NCs) are of great importance in directing their composition and geometrical structure. In this work, a silver nanocluster co-protected by phosphine and thiolate, namely, [Ag39(PFBT)24(TPP)8]2– (Ag39, PFBT = pentafluorobenzenethiol, TPP = triphenylphosphine), was isolated and structurally characterized. It adopts a three-layered Ag13@Ag18@Ag8S24P8 core–shell structure. The Ag13@Ag18 kernel is unusual in multilayer noble metal NCs. By introducing a copper precursor in the synthesis, a bimetallic nanocluster [Ag37Cu2(PFBT)24(TPP)8]2– (Ag37Cu2) with an identical structure to Ag39 apart from two outer Ag atoms being substituted by Cu atoms was obtained. Astoundingly, the Cu precursor used in the synthesis was found to be critical in determining the final structure. The alteration of the Cu precursor led to the cocrystallization of the above alloy nanocluster with a Ag14 nanocluster, namely, [Ag37Cu2(PFBT)24(TPP)8]2–·[Ag14(PFBT)6(TPP)8] (Ag37Cu2·Ag14). The electronic structure analyzed by theoretical calculation reveals that Ag39 is a 17-electron open-shell superatom. The optical absorption of Ag39, Ag37Cu2, and Ag37Cu2·Ag14 was compared and studied in detail. Size-Focusing Synthetic Process and Properties of [Au25Cu8(S-Adam)19(PPh3)5]+ Nanocluster

Abstract:Compared with nanoparticles, nanoclusters have some unique properties, such as definite structure, surface effect, and quantum size effect. In this work, AuCu nanocluster protected by triphenylphosphine and adamantane mercaptan is synthesized and it is formulated to [Au 25 Cu 8 (S-Adam) 19 (PPh 3 ) 5 ] + . With the characterization of UV-Vis absorption spectrum and Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF), the synthesis of [Au 25 Cu 8 (S-Adam) 19 (PPh 3 ) 5 ] + nanocluster is demonstrated to be a size-focusing process: polydisperse Au m Cu n (S-Adam) x (PPh 3 ) y precursor with a size ranging from 900 Da to 2000 Da generates firstly and it transforms into [Au 25 Cu 8 (S-Adam) 19 (PPh 3 ) 5 ] + nanocluster in 3 days. TEM image demonstrates it is monodisperse distributing between 0.84 and 2.0 nm with an average size of 1.4 nm. TG shows a weight loss of 38.70% with ligands continuously breaking down between 200 and 330°C. Thermal stability test shows that it keeps well thermal stability at 40°C: the peaks of UV-Vis absorption spectrum gradually get weaken at 6 h and completely become a decaying curve at 8 h. This work provides a simple method to prepare AuCu nanocluster and affords new ideas for preparing Au-based alloy nanoclusters.

Unraveling the Nucleation Process from a Au(I)-SR Complex to Transition-Size Nanoclusters

Abstract:Atomically precise noble metal nanoclusters provide a critical benchmark for the fundamental research of the origin of condensed matter because they retain the original state of the metal bonds. Also, knowledge about the transition from organometallic complexes to a nanoclusters is important for understanding the structural evolution of the nanoclusters, particularly their nucleation mechanism. Herein, three transition-size gold nanoclusters are prepared via a controlled diphosphine-mediated top-down routine. Starting from small-size nanoclusters, three new nanoclusters including Au13(SAdm)8(L4)2(BPh4) (Au13), Au14(S-c-C6H11)10L4 (Au14), and Au16(S-c-C6H11)11LPh* (Au16) are obtained by controlled clipping on the surface and kernel of initial nanoclusters. Combining their atomically precise structures with DFT theoretical calculations, the overall atom-by-atom structural evolution process from Au12(SR)12 (0 e–) to Au18(SR)14 (4 e–) is mapped out. In addition, studies on their electronic structures show that the evolution from an organometallic complex to nanoclusters is accompanied by a dramatic decrease in the HOMO–LUMO gaps. Most importantly, the formation of the first Au–Au bond is captured in the "Au4S4 to Au5" nucleation process from Au12(SR)12 complex to the Au13 nanocluster. Abstract:The synthesis and characterization of the clusters Au-13[PPh3](4)[S(CH2)(11)CH3](2)Cl-2 (1) and Au-13[PPh3](4)[S(CH2)(11)-CH3](4) (2) are described. These mixed-ligand, sub-nanometer clusters, prepared via exchange of dodecanethiol onto phosphine-halide gold clusters, show enhanced stability relative to the parent. The characterization of these clusters features the precise determination of the number of gold atoms in the cluster cores using high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy, allowing the assignment of 13 gold atoms (+/- 3 atoms) to the composition of both cluster molecules. Electrochemical and optical measurements reveal discrete molecular orbital levels and apparent energy gaps of 1.6-1.7 eV for the two cluster molecules. The electrochemical measurements further indicate that the Au-13[PPh3](4)[S(CH2)(11)CH3](2)Cl-2 cluster undergoes an overall two-electron reduction. The electrochemical and spectroscopic properties of the two Au-13 cluster molecules are compared with those of a secondary synthetic product, which proved to be larger Au thiolate-derivatized monolayer-protected clusters with an average core of Au-180. The latter shows behavior fully consistent with the adoption of metallic-like properties.
A Silver Nanocluster Containing Interstitial Sulfur and Unprecedented Chemical Bonds.

Abstract:The emergence of thiolated metal nanoclusters provides opportunities to identify significant and unprecedented phenomena because they are at quantum sizes and can be characterized with X-ray crystallography. Recently silver nanoclusters have received extensive interest owing to their merits, such as low-cost and rich properties. Herein, a thiolated silver nanocluster [Ag46 S7 (SPhMe2 )24 ]NO3 (Ag46 for short) with a face-centered cubic (fcc) structure was successfully synthesized and structurally resolved by X-ray analysis. Most importantly, interstitial sulfur was found in the lattice void of Ag46 without lattice distortion or expansion, indicating that the classic theory of interstitial metal solid solutions might be not applicable at quantum size. Furthermore, unprecedented chemical bonds and unique structural features (such as asymmetrically coordinated μ4 -S) were found in Ag46 and might be related to the interstitial sulfur, which is supported by natural population analyses.
Atomically precise copper dopants in metal clusters boost up stability, fluorescence, and photocatalytic activity

Abstract:The structurally precise alloy nanoclusters have been emerged as a burgeoning nanomaterial for their unique physical/chemical features. We here report a rod-like nanocluster [Au 12 Cu 13 (PPh 3 ) 10 I 7 ](SbF 6 ) 2 (Au 12 Cu 13 ), which was generated through a transformation of a [Au 9 (PPh 3 ) 8 ] 3+ intermediate in the presence of CuI, unveiled by time-dependent UV-vis spectroscopy, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry as well as single crystal X-ray diffraction. Au 12 Cu 13 is comprised of two pentagonal bipyramids Au 6 Cu units and a pentagonal prism Cu 11 unit, where the copper and gold species are presented in +1 and 0 chemical states. The Cu-dopants significantly improved the stability and fluorescence (quantum yield: ~34%, 34-folds of homo-Au 25 (PPh 3 ) 10 Br 7 ). The high stability of Au 12 Cu 13 is attributed to the high binding energy of iodine ligands, Au-Cu synergistic effects and its 16-electon system as an 8-electron superatom dimer. Finally, the robust Au 12 Cu 13 exhibited high catalytic activity (~92% conversion and ~84% methyl formate-selectivity) and good durability in methanol photo-oxidation.

Abstract:Revealing the stability and structural patterns is important for precisely synthesizing or assembling ligand protected nanoclusters, and even their applications as functional nanomaterials. Investigations on structural evolutional patterns and structural stability are very challenging, because structures change with the nanocluster size and the structural stability depends on both the electron structures of cores and ligand type. Herein, we propose a hybrid superatom network (hSAN) model to understand the stability of some gold nanoclusters with different kinds of ligands. In this model, 4c-2e superatom Au-4 can form conjugated superatom networks by vertex sharing, and ligands further connect the conjugated superatom networks together to form a bigger complex network, i.e. a hSAN. The stability of the clusters, including [Au-24(Cu CPh)(14)(PPh3)(4)](2+), Au-28(S-c-C6H11)(20), Au-36(SCH2Ph-tBu)(8)Cl-20, Au-40(O-MBT)(24) and Au-52(TBBT)(32) can be explained uniformly by the hSAN model. Beyond that, a new heuristic structural pattern named the Au-13 topological rule is proposed. In the light of this heuristic rule, every Au-7 bi-tetrahedral kernel is included in an Au-13 structure with quasi-O-h symmetry, i.e. as long as the Au-7 bi-tetrahedral kernel is formed, it will be surrounded by six Au atoms to form an Au-13 structure topologically. According to this understanding, a new nanocluster [Au-44(Cu=CH3)(26)(PCH3)(4)](2+) and a new nanowire with the structural evolutional formula [Au((20n+4))(Cu CH3)((12n+2))(PCH3)(4)](2+) (n = 1, 2, 3, 4,.) are predicted. Both the understanding of the stability and the structure rule are free from the type of ligand, and will be useful for the structural predictions and determinations of ligand protected gold nanoclusters.
Synthesis and structural determination of multidentate 2,3-dithiol-stabilized Au clusters

Abstract:Interface bond structure, in addition to the well-known size and shape quantum confinement effects, is another factor that affects the properties of nanomaterials that is less known and studied. Inspired by the thiol-bridging "staple" motif (RS-Au-SR, Jadzinsky; et al. Science 2007, 318, 430.) discovered from monothiol-stabilized gold nanoclusters, dithiol ligand 2,3-dimercaptopropanesulfonic (DMPS) acid has been employed to synthesize dithiol-protected Au clusters (DTCs). The structure and property of the Au DTCs are studied to probe two effects: the entropy gain of dithiol over monothiol ligand protection and the constraint to the formation of the thiol bridging surface bonding. The hydrodynamic sizes of Au DTCs were estimated by diffusion nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The size distribution, Au core plus ligands on solid support, was confirmed by atomic force microscope (AFM) imaging. Size-dependent optical properties were observed. Au(4) clusters at high purity, characterized by mass spectrometry and organic-metal ratio confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), display a characteristic absorbance band at 282 nm. The proton chemical environments as well as Au-S bond information of the Au(4) cluster were fully elucidated by (13)C-(1)H heteronuclear single-quantum coherence (HSQC) in conjunction with other two-dimensional (2D) NMR techniques. The Au-S bonding was further studied in thiol stretching by infrared and Au(4f) and S(2p) electrons by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). One possible structure of the Au(4) cluster has been proposed that needs further theoretical studies or single-crystal confirmation.
