Abstract:A parking space choice model based on personal preferences was developed for large parking lots to analyze the utility of parking spaces in shopping mall parking lots. The driver's behaviorial characteristics when parking are analyzed based on personal preferences which are assigned into three groups (inherence, skill and affordability) using a multinomial Logit model to analyze the impacts of the preferences on parking choices. A parking choice utility model with multiple variants based on personal preferences was then used to study driver behavior in the parking lot of the Beijing IKEA store. The results show that skill preferences have the most significant impact on the parking space choice. This model can accurately evaluate driver behavior when choosing the parking spaces.

Abstract:A dynamic macroscopic parking pricing model is developed to maximize the revenue for a city, while simultaneously minimizing the total cruising time on the network. The proposed responsive pricing scheme takes the parking search phenomenon into consideration. This means that the parking fee also changes in response to the number of searching vehicles, in addition to changes in response to the parking occupancy. Compared to most literature, this macroscopic pricing model is embedded into a dynamic macroscopic urban traffic and parking model and has rather low data requirements, mostly related to average values and probability distributions at the network level. The case study of an area within the city of Zurich, Switzerland shows that the model provides a preliminary idea for city councils regarding an optimal parking pricing policy resulting in financial revenues that can be obtained without having a significant negative effect on short-term traffic performance and environmental conditions.

Abstract:When most individuals driving to the shopping mall choose the parking lot, they put attentions on not only the service levels of the parking lot but also their own personal preferences. Parking is essentially a choice behavior with preference information. The personal preferences consist of social attributes (e.g., gender, age, income, occupation), driving attributes (e.g., vehicle type, vehicle price, driving distance), and consuming attributes (e.g., consuming cost, frequency). On the basis of the survey about the choice behavior of drivers in the shopping mall, a multinomial logit model is utilized to analyze the preferences which has significant impacts on the choice behavior. The conclusion comes out that not only the social attributes but also his/her driving attributes and consuming ones have impact on the individual's parking choice. From the results, a personalized choice function is presented further for drivers to choose the fit parking lot.

Abstract:Curb parking is an indispensable part of urban public parking system. A reasonable curb parking pricing scheme makes contribution to improve the use efficiency of curb parking and to reduce traffic congestion. This paper analyzes the parking choice behavior from the micro-aspects, and the choice utility function is established to combine with the travel time, search time, waiting time, access time, and parking pricing. Through the utility function, the Probit-based parking choice behavior model is formulated. Based on that, the curb parking pricing model is proposed by considering the constrained conditions. Finally, the incremental assignment algorithm of the model is designed and the model is applied to the parking planning of Tonglin, China. The results show that the proposed model has practicality and reliability in the practical operation.

Abstract:As a kind of intelligent parking mode, shared parking mode has been widely promoted, and parking app, as a product of the development of sharing economy in the field of transportation, is also being vigorously advocated. However, there are not many people who use parking app to find and reserve parking space in practice, which is largely caused by insufficient information provided by the parking apps. In order to better explain, predict and improve drivers' choice of parking apps, a multinomial logit model was established to analyze the relationship between drivers' parking app choice behavior and the influential factors. The influential factors include drivers' individual characteristics and parking app's attributes, which were extracted from a questionnaire and typical parking apps currently in operation. The results show that the reservation and shared parking spaces, available parking spaces, parking charges and distance to the destination are the main factors that determine the drivers' choice of parking app. This paper provides a reference for the development of Ningbo parking apps.

Abstract:Private parking spaces account for a large proportion of potential parking resources, whose utilization rate could be raised by sharing them. To investigate private parking space owners' sharing choice behavior, this paper applies a framework of Combined Technology Acceptance Model and the Theory of Planned Behavior for a more comprehensive consideration of psychological attitudes on these suppliers in urban residential areas. A web-based survey was conducted to collect data. The justified factors are then incorporated in hybrid choice model (HCM) as latent variables. HCM results showed that incorporation of latent variables such as perceived risk provides better fitting effect than traditional multinominal models, and that revenues and community participance are influential factors for sharing choice. Our findings indicate behavioral intention framework could serve as argumentation of rational selection of latent variables. These findings could also support better implementation of shared parking from managerial and operational perspectives.

Abstract:Models of parking search time predominantly rely on the binomial approximation, the calculation of which is dependent solely on the occupancy of the parking network. This paper sheds light on the importance of accounting for competition between parking searchers and the effects of dynamically changing occupancy. To this end, we investigate the accuracy of two probabilistic models, namely the binomial approximation and a model proposed by Cao and Menéndez (CaM). We utilize an agent-based microscopic parking simulation model as a benchmark for comparison purposes. Our findings highlight the significance of considering the competitive dynamics among drivers in the quest for parking spaces and the fluctuations in parking occupancy rates over short time intervals. We highlight the ranges of occupancies for which the binomial approximation and the CaM model provide more reliable estimations of parking search times. The CaM model provides, in general, more accurate estimations of search times since it accounts for various parking network characteristics such as competition and varying occupancy. The binomial approximation underestimates parking search times more substantially at high occupancies with a large number of searching vehicles, whereas the CaM model performs worse for lower spacing between parking spots and lower parking occupancies. Insights from this research are then used to discuss policy implications of accounting for competition and short-term occupancy variations when designing either parking models or parking-related control strategies.

Abstract:Parking can have a significant impact on transportation systems. Besides the effects on travel demand, the regulation and usage of urban parking can also directly influence traffic performance. The availability of parking and the demand to park, at any given time, influence the trip completion rate, and correspondingly the traffic conditions in the area. In our research, we define several vehicle groups, according to their status concerning parking. For example, vehicles in an area can be grouped into “driving”, “searching” and “staying (i.e., parking)”. To find the quantity of cars in each vehicle group at a future time, we divide the time period into a number of thin time slices, in which the conditions are assumed to be static. Using probability theory, kinematic flow theory and dimensional analysis, a transition matrix can be developed. Based on that, the quantity of cars driving, parking or searching for parking can be updated over time. Therefore, the model enables us to define, simulate, and quantify the dynamics of the parking process. Furthermore, we are able to estimate different traffic parameters / indicators. The ultimate goal is to evaluate the relationship between urban parking and traffic performance in urban networks. The current study (this paper) is a preliminary part of the research, it quantifies the number of cars that access parking in a time slice analytically (i.e, the number of cars that leave the “searching” group, and join the “staying” group). Numerical examples are given, a program is provided to test the results as well.

Abstract:Behavior choice reflects traffic demand of people,we study the influencing factors of people public parking demand with the case study of the Quzhou central city zone.By analyzing Logit model,we find that the residence factor of socio-economic characteristics,the trip purpose factor,parking charge factor,parking time factor,time of searching parking stall factor,walking time factor which belong to driving experience,parking stall supply factor,the fining of peccancy factor which belong to socio-environmental factors are the significant influencing factors,public parking demand of people show time-space pattern difference due to the difference of significant influencing factors.Based on significant factors,we proposed several pubic parking improving measures of Quzhou central city zone：static traffic demand construct,public parking stall supply,public parking service,public parking stall charging and parking management;finally pointed out the this study could use for other cities.

Abstract:Parking demand exceeding parking supply and uneven parking demand distribution are the existing conflicts in city centers. Parking pricing is frequently utilized to manage parking resources. This study aims to assess different parking pricing strategies through simulations for providing operational suggestions for urban parking managers. Two widely used parking pricing strategies in China combined with an optimized parking pricing strategy are proposed and compared. We introduce an agent-based simulation system to describe the parking and traffic conditions. Various measures of effectiveness under different parking pricing strategies can be obtained via agent-based simulations. We then construct a comprehensive benefit combining average cost and failure rate. Results show that the second strategy with charging different parking fees by considering locations and third optimized strategy can effectively improve traffic efficiency. However, the second strategy may lead to higher average cost than that of the third one. Thus, the third optimized strategy performs the best and can be used to optimize the parking policy of parking managers in the future. The entire assessment through simulations can provide evaluation suggestions for parking managers to adjust parking policies.

Abstract:Shared parking improves the utilization rate of parking spaces by taking advantage of temporal and spatial differences, which is conducive to alleviating parking problems. From the perspective of bounded rationality, this paper studies the factors that influence the decision behavior of parking space owners and car travelers (non-residential drivers who have parking needs near residential areas) in sharing parking spaces. Prospect theory was used to analyze the bounded rational behavior characteristics of parking space owners and car travelers, and a value function model with rental price as the reference point was established. Combined with the survey data of the Xinhuangcheng district in Nanchang City, China, the shared parking space rental price that satisfied both parties was analyzed in this case study. The results of the study show that factors such as personal characteristics and behavioral habits affect the decision behavior of parking space owners and car travelers, and that rental price is a key factor. When the rental price of parking spaces is close to the maximum price desired by the owner, the owner feels the benefit and is willing to share the private parking space, but when the rental price differs greatly from the maximum price desired by the owner, the owner feels the loss and is not willing to share the parking space. From the survey data, it can be concluded that the ideal rental price of shared parking spaces around the survey area is 5 CNY/h. This paper provides a theoretical basis and guidance for the formulation of shared parking policies, which can help solve parking problems.

Abstract:The demand for parking spaces in city centers often exceeds the supply. The spatial distribution of such spaces is uneven, which leads to the overheating of hot parking lots. To balance existing conflicts, parking charge and reservation mechanisms are usually utilized to improve the overall efficiency of parking spaces. This study aims to analyze and compare the benefits of these instruments and provide operational suggestions for urban parking managers. To achieve this goal, we introduce an agent simulation system and construct a simulation framework of parking charge and reservation. Then, the average travel time and total parking space utilization time are combined as a comprehensive benefit with different weights, and the benefits of parking charge and reservation are analyzed and compared under the corresponding weight. Parking charge and reservation are considered comprehensively in a combined simulation example. Results show that parking charge and reservation can remarkably improve the comprehensive benefit, and parking charge can achieve the maximum comprehensive benefit when the fee is high. When the fee is low, such as less than 26 yuan/h, the reservation mechanism can achieve a good level of benefit. Thus, parking reservation in most cities in China is an effective means to manage popular parking lots when the parking fee is low and difficult to increase.

Abstract:Parking demand is generally larger than parking supply in city centers. And uneven distribution of parking demand often leads to over-consumption in the popular places. To balance the existing conflicts, parking reservation system (PRS) is commonly adopted to manage and configure the reservation parking spaces. The aim of this paper is to optimize social benefits and parking lot revenue through configuring reasonable reservation proportion for each off-street public parking lot in the urban area, which can provide operation advice for parking management departments. Firstly, an agent-based simulation model which presents the coexistence of reservation and nonreservation parking vehicles was established, and parking selection used the predicted parking space occupancy rate of a target parking lot at a predicted vehicle arrival time. Then, genetic algorithm was used in simulations to optimize the solution of combining different reserved parking space proportion configurations. Finally, Wulin CBD, Hangzhou, China was applied as a case to analyze and optimize the reserved parking space proportion. The Single-objective optimization, such as social benefits, parking lot revenue, and multi-objective optimization were both discussed and analyzed. Results show that through optimizing parking reservation proportion configuration can directly and effectively improve social benefits or parking lot revenue. Further analysis indicated that optimizing social benefits and parking lot revenue are two conflicting objectives. The reserved parking space proportion in popular parking lots should be reduced as much as possible under the optimization of social benefits.

Abstract:This study examines the pricing strategy of a parking sharing platform that rents the daytime-usage rights of private parking spaces from parking owners and sells them to parking users. In an urban area with both shared parking and curbside parking, a choice equilibrium model is proposed to predict the number of shared parking users under any given pricing strategy of the platform. We analytically analyze how the pricing strategy of the platform (price charged on users and rent paid to parking owners or sharers) would affect the parking choice equilibrium and several system efficiency metrics. It is shown that the platform is profitable when some parking owners have a relatively small inconvenience cost from sharing their spaces, but its profit is always negative at minimum social cost. Numerical studies are conducted to illustrate the analytical results and provide further understanding.

Abstract:In China, more and more families own cars, and parking is also undergoing a revolution from manual to automatic charging. In the process of parking revolution, understanding parking behavior and making an effective prediction is important for parking companies and municipal policymakers. We obtain real parking data from a big parking company for parking behavior analysis and prediction. The dataset comes from a shopping mall in Ningbo, Zhejiang, and it consists of 136,973 records in 396 days. Specifically, we mainly explore the impact of weather factors on parking behavior. We study several models, and find that the random forest model can make the most accurate parking behavior prediction. Experiments show that the random forest model can reach 89% accuracy.

Abstract:Shared autonomous vehicles (SAVs) are one of the important development directions of smart and green transportation. However, relevant researches are not sufficient at present. The factors influencing the intention to use SAVs and their parking choice behaviors need to be further analyzed. First, in order to better explain, predict, and improve travelers’ intention to use SAVs, the conceptual framework based on technology acceptance model was developed to establish the relationships between the travelers’ intention to use SAVs, social influence of SAVs, attitude toward behavior of SAVs, perceived risk of SAVs, perceived usefulness of SAVs and perceived ease of these use. Then structural equation model (SEM) was established to analyze the relationship between various variables. The results show that the perceived usefulness, behavior attitude, social influence, perceived ease of use, and perceived risk are the main factors that determine the intention to use SAVs. Through the test of direct effect, indirect effect, and total effect in the model, it is found that perceived usefulness has the largest total impact on intention to use SAVs, with a standardized coefficient of 0.765, followed by behavior attitude (0.732), social influence (0.597), perceived ease of use (0.462) and perceived risk of SAVs (-0.452). In addition, through the study of observed indicator variables ATB2 and BI3, it is found that perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, social influence, perceived risk, attitude toward behavior, and behavior intention all have an impact on parking behavior. In order to study the specific influencing factors of parking choice behavior, a multinomial logit (MNL) model was established to analyze the relationships between travelers’ parking choice behaviors and the influential factors. The influential factors include travelers’ individual characteristics, travel attributes, and parking modes’ attributes by extracting from a questionnaire. The results show that the travel time, travel fees, parking charge, cruising fees and parking time, traffic emission are the main factors that determine the travels’ choices of parking. This paper provides advice for operators of SAVs.

Abstract:In order to capture the driver's attitude and preference towards risk during the decision-making process, this paper establishes a parking choice model considering driver heterogeneity based on the cumulative prospect theory. This research innovatively considers the influence of the unreliability of cruise time on drivers' parking choice behavior and adds the psychological cost of drivers' anxiety caused by lateness into the model. At the same time, according to the driver's parking preference for parking, the latent category model is used to divide the driver into time-sensitive and money-sensitive categories. This paper analyzes the influence of unreliable cruising time on drivers' parking choice behavior and finds that drivers have the characteristics of overestimating high-probability events and underestimating low-probability events in the decision-making process. By comparing the parking choice results of rational and irrational drivers, it is found that the model considering the risk attitude of drivers in the decision-making process is more in line with reality.

Abstract:Transportation Research Record, Ahead of Print. The parking cruising problem can be attributed to the unbalanced spatial parking space occupancy in the parking lot with multiple trip purposes and high traffic volumes, and it has already become an obstacle to improving travel efficiency. This study aims to investigate the reasons for the unbalanced occupancy of parking spaces and develop strategies to achieve spatial equilibrium by reducing parking cruising time. A field survey is first conducted to analyze the factors influencing parking space choice behavior, such as searching distances, walking distances, parking price, and parkers' attributes. Based on the survey, a mixed logit model is calibrated to reveal parking space choice patterns of different parkers. Afterwards, the parking lot is divided into three zones based on searching distances and walking distances, using the K-means algorithm. According to the results, a simulation-based optimization model is then established, for minimizing the variance of average occupancy. An optimal pricing strategy is obtained at last. A case study in Nanjing, China, is conducted to verify the feasibility and rationality of the proposed method. The difference between weekdays and weekends is explored. The results show that, with the optimal strategies, the standard deviation of average occupancy in each zone decreases by 39.52% during weekends and 42.29% during weekdays. Finally, political implications and recommendations on the layout design of facilities and the adoption of differential parking pricing strategies are provided.

Abstract:Reasonable parking charge and supply policy are essential for the regular operation of the traffic in city center. This paper develops an evaluation model for parking policies using system dynamics. A quantitative study is conducted to examine the effects of parking charge and supply policy on traffic speed. The model, which is composed of three interrelated subsystems, first summarizes the travel cost of each travel mode and then calibrates the travel choice model through the travel mode subsystem. Finally, the subsystem that evaluates the state of traffic forecasts future car speed based on bureau of public roads (BPR) function and generates new travel cost until the entire model reaches a steady state. The accuracy of the model is verified in Hangzhou Wulin business district. The related error of predicted speed is only 2.2%. The results indicate that the regular pattern of traffic speed and parking charge can be illustrated using the proposed model based on system dynamics, and the model infers that reducing the parking supply in core area will increase its congestion level and, under certain parking supply conditions, there exists an interval of possible pricing at which the service reaches a level that is fairly stable.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a bi-level approach to determine optimal parking management in large parking lots with multiple user classes and different types of parking spaces. The upper level of the model aims to maximize the social benefits of the local parking system, such as the system searching time and walking time by drivers. The lower level is a simulation system constructed using the multi-agent modeling environment NetLogo. However, it is essential to understand how drivers choose their parking location, then we can describe drivers’ movements and responses to different parking management strategies in the micro-simulation system. This study presents the results from a stated preference experiment on the choice behavior of drivers in Shanghai, China. The model attributes are walking distance, traveling time and uncertainties towards finding a vacant parking spot, which were selected based on a literature review. A simulated annealing algorithm is adapted to solve this bi-level simulation optimization model. The approach is applied to optimize parking management in the campus of Tongji University, China. The results show that the implementation of different duration limits is useful to adapt the time-varying demand with different user classes. The approach provides a powerful tool for strategically designing parking management, and for assessing parking policies and parking information systems.
