Abstract:Fourier single-pixel imaging (FSI) has been proven capable of acquiring excellent image quality when is sampled the fully information in Fourier domain. However, when the sampling measurements is limited, image reconstruction by applying inverse Fourier transform algorithm would result in the severe ringing effect and the loss of image details. In this report, we propose a new algorithm for FSI reconstruction based on compressed sensing theory, which utilizes joint discrete gradient and non-local self-similarity priors, thus substantially using the prior knowledge of natural images in reconstruction process. Both the results of computational simulations and experiments demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:A single-pixel detector based hyperspectral system provides an effective way to obtain the spatial-spectral information of target scenes. However, complex spectral dispersion and the substantial number of measurements not only increase the complexity of the system but also decrease the sampling efficiency and the reconstruction accuracy. In this paper, we propose a compressive sensing (CS) theory based single-pixel hyperspectral imaging system. Based on structured illumination, the spatial information is modulated by binary spatial patterns displayed on a liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS), while polarizing elements at specific angles, acting as a serious of filters, modulate the spectral dimension, effectively avoiding spectral dispersion. In terms of sampling efficiency, the application of CS significantly decreases the number of measurements required compared to the Nyquist-Shannon sampling theorem. Besides, to improve the reconstruction accuracy, mutual coherence minimization is employed to optimize the pre-trained dictionary, spatial patterns and filters. Furthermore, a two-step encoding method based on macro-pixel segmentation is proposed to address the issue of low resolution constrained by the size of the dictionary. Compared to the unoptimized system and dictionary, the proposed method achieves more accurate reconstruction results in both spectral and spatial dimensions. This work may provide opportunities for high-resolution single-pixel hyperspectral imaging systems based on CS. Abstract:A fast and high-resolution reconstruction algorithm with variable resolution increasing ratio and down-sampling ratio is proposed. Since the digital holography requires that the space-bandwidth product of the recording system should be greater than that of the object so as to ensure no loss of information, usually much redundant information and pixels exist in the recorded digital hologram. According to that, we propose utilizing a flexible down-sampling process with variable ratio to eliminate the redundancy. The technical characteristics are analyzed. The validity of this method is shown by both calculations based on theory analysis and experimental results.
Twin-Image-Free Holography: A Compressive Sensing Approach

Abstract:Holographic reconstruction is troubled by the phase-conjugate wave front arising from Hermitian symmetry of the complex field. The so-called twin image obfuscates the reconstruction in solving the inverse problem. Here we quantitatively reveal how and how much the twin image affects the reconstruction and propose a compressive sensing (CS) approach to reconstruct a hologram completely free from the twin image. Using the canonical basis, the incoherence condition of CS is naturally satisfied by the Fourier transformation associated with wave propagation. With the propagation kernel function related to the distance, the object wave diffracts into a sharp pattern while the phase-conjugate wave diffracts into a diffuse pattern. An iterative algorithm using a total variation sparsity constraint could filter out the diffuse conjugated signal and overcome the inherent physical symmetry of holographic reconstruction. The feasibility is verified by simulation and experimental results, as well as a comparative study to an existing phase retrieval method.

Abstract:A novel framework of compressed sensing (CS), namely small block-based compressed sensing (SBCS), is proposed in this paper. It aims at reconstructing super resolution images built upon CS theory. A new dictionary based on the discrete Legendre polynomials dictionary (DLPD) is also designed to transform images into sparse representations. Instead of conventional random matrix, discrete cosine transform (DCT) matrix is used for measurements. The image reconstruction method involves orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) and overlapping method, which can be more efficient in eliminating the artifacts on the block boundaries. In the experiments, it is shown that the reconstruction quality of the proposed method is substantially superior to those of smoothing methods with filters.

Abstract:Compressed sensing has been discussed separately in spatial and temporal domains. Compressive holography has been introduced as a method that allows 3D tomographic reconstruction at different depths from a single 2D image. Coded exposure is a temporal compressed sensing method for high speed video acquisition. In this work, we combine compressive holography and coded exposure techniques and extend the discussion to 4D reconstruction in space and time from one coded captured image. In our prototype, digital in-line holography was used for imaging macroscopic, fast moving objects. The pixel-wise temporal modulation was implemented by a digital micromirror device. In this paper we demonstrate $10\times$ temporal super resolution with multiple depths recovery from a single image. Two examples are presented for the purpose of recording subtle vibrations and tracking small particles within 5 ms.

Abstract:We demonstrate a novel computational method for high resolution image recovery from a single digital hologram frame. The complex object field is obtained from the recorded hologram by solving a constrained optimization problem. This approach which is unlike the physical hologram replay process is shown to provide high quality image recovery even when the dc and the cross terms in the hologram overlap in the Fourier domain. Experimental results are shown for a Fresnel zone hologram of a resolution chart, intentionally recorded with a small off-axis reference beam angle. Excellent image recovery is observed without the presence of dc or twin image terms and with minimal speckle noise.
Faithful Digital Holographic Reconstruction Using a Sparse Sensor Array

Abstract:The resolution and accuracy of the reconstruction are greatly limited by the field of hologram (FOH) in digital holography. Multi-apertures sampling in the hologram plane can achieve a large FOH. Sparse sensor aperture array uses the synthetic method to achieve higher spatial resolution than any single aperture, which can be used to a large-size scene imaging. However, accurate reconstruction is substantially degraded when there is a large gap between apertures. As a result, the entire scene could not be recovered from FOH. We present a self-restoration method that restores for gaps between sparse apertures. Constraints based on the object energy distribution and absorption characteristics are applied to extract the object function from existing defective reconstruction with a gap. The lost diffraction order can be reproduced and the original object function can be recovered by the iterations between object and hologram. Our iterative process allows a faithful recovery of the gap information to be extracted from the sub-holograms to achieve full-field imaging. The entire complex-value field that contains both the sampling and gap zones in the detection plane is finally retrieved. This faithful reconstruction using a sparse sensor array provides an effectively enlarged hologram for high-resolution digital holography.
Accurate Reconstruction in Digital Holographic Microscopy Using Fresnel Dual-Tree Complex Wavelet Transform

Abstract:Digital holography is a promising measurement method in the fields of bio-medicine and micro-electronics. But the captured images of digital holography are severely polluted by the speckle noise because of optical scattering and diffraction. Via analyzing the properties of Fresnel diffraction and the topographies of micro-structures, a novel reconstruction method based on the dual-tree complex wavelet transform (DT-CWT) is proposed. This algorithm is shift-invariant and capable of obtaining sparse representations for the diffracted signals of salient features, thus it is well suited for multiresolution processing of the interferometric holograms of directional morphologies. An explicit representation of orthogonal Fresnel DT-CWT bases and a specific filtering method are developed. This method can effectively remove the speckle noise without destroying the salient features. Finally, the proposed reconstruction method is compared with the conventional Fresnel diffraction integration and Fresnel wavelet transform with compressive sensing methods to validate its remarkable superiority on the aspects of topography reconstruction and speckle removal.

Abstract:The zero-order diffraction image and the conjugate image can be eliminated using the phase-shifting digital holography.However,the resolution of the hologram and the reconstructed image is limited by the resolution of the CCD used in the digital holography.To reconstruct a higher resolution image from part information of a hologram,the novel compressive sensing algorithm is applied to the sparse reconstruction of digital holograms.The theory of applying the compressive sensing algorithm to reconstruct digital holograms is analyzed.A digital hologram acquired by simulation in computer is reconstructed using this algorithm.The experimental results show that digital holograms can be reconstructed using the compressive sensing algorithm.A high-quality image is reconstructed from the 50% data of the hologram.The zero-order diffraction image and the conjugate image are eliminated.When random measurement is realized by an appropriate measurement device such as a DMD or a random phase plate,digital holograms can be recorded by a single pixel camera to break the limitation of the CCD resolution.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a compressive sensing (CS) framework for correlation holography. This is accomplished by adopting the principle of compressive sensing and thresholding in the two-point intensity correlation. The measurement matrix and the sensing matrix that are required for applying the CS framework here are systematically extracted from the random illuminations of the laser speckle data. Reconstruction results using CS, CS with thresholding, and intensity correlation are compared. Our study reveals that liminal CS requires far fewer samples for the reconstruction of the hologram and has wide application in image reconstruction.
Signal Decoupling In Digital Holography Via Compressive Sensing

Abstract:Digital holography (DH) could realize three dimensional (3-D) imaging since it records the wavefront induced by an object volume. However, DH suffers from two inherent drawbacks for 3-D imaging: the twin images and cross talks between different depths. Both these two terms severely trouble DH because they couple with the reconstructed signal, particularly under microscopic configuration. In this work, we briefly review the signal decoupling techniques in DH and introduce the achieved micron-level depth-resolved uncoupled signal reconstruction via compressive sensing (CS). As an optimization strategy for signal reconstruction, CS is capable of filtering out the coupled signals by sparsity constraint. The CS based signal decoupling in DH is analyzed and verified by numerical simulations and optical experiments.

Abstract:In digital holography, reconstructed image quality can be primarily limited due to the inability of a single small aperture sensor to cover the entire field of a hologram. The use of multi-sensor arrays in synthetic aperture digital holographic imaging technology contributes to overcoming the limitations of sensor coverage by expanding the area for detection. However, imaging accuracy is affected by the gap size between sensors and the resolution of sensors, especially when dealing with a limited number of sensors. An image reconstruction method is proposed that combines physical constraint characteristics of the imaging object with a score-based diffusion model, aiming to enhance the imaging accuracy of digital holography technology with extremely sparse sensor arrays. Prior information of the sample is learned by the neural network in the diffusion model to obtain a score function, which alternately constrains the iterative reconstruction process with the underlying physical model. The results demonstrate that the structural similarity and peak signal-to-noise ratio of the reconstructed images using this method are higher than the traditional method, along with a strong generalization ability.

Abstract:In holographic reconstruction, the two-order and twin image noise produced by the phase-conjugate wave arising from the symmetry of the complex field, will affect the accuracy and the image quality of the reconstructed image. The acquisition of the holographic focus distance parameter for judging the best focal plane of object is also the key to holographic imaging. In this work, a numerical focusing imaging algorithm based on compressive sensing is proposed. By choosing a stack of reconstructed images in the axial direction with fixed interval, every image is processed by the total variation regularization. These images are used to calculate and construct the focus curve of the digital holography according to the focus metrics such as the tamura coefficient and the absolute gradient operator. Then the best focus plane is evaluated. The proposed method suppresses the noise of in -line digital reconstruction, improves the axial accuracy of reconstructing, and realizes a larger range of high-resolution imaging around the focus plane.
A flexible and accurate total variation and cascaded denoisers-based image reconstruction algorithm for hyperspectrally compressed ultrafast photography

Abstract:Hyperspectrally compressed ultrafast photography (HCUP) based on compressed sensing and the time- and spectrum-to-space mappings can simultaneously realize the temporal and spectral imaging of non-repeatable or difficult-to-repeat transient events passively in a single exposure. It possesses an incredibly high frame rate of tens of trillions of frames per second and a sequence depth of several hundred, and plays a revolutionary role in single-shot ultrafast optical imaging. However, due to the ultra-high data compression ratio induced by the extremely large sequence depth as well as the limited fidelities of traditional reconstruction algorithms over the reconstruction process, HCUP suffers from a poor image reconstruction quality and fails to capture fine structures in complex transient scenes. To overcome these restrictions, we propose a flexible image reconstruction algorithm based on the total variation (TV) and cascaded denoisers (CD) for HCUP, named the TV-CD algorithm. It applies the TV denoising model cascaded with several advanced deep learning-based denoising models in the iterative plug-and-play alternating direction method of multipliers framework, which can preserve the image smoothness while utilizing the deep denoising networks to obtain more priori, and thus solving the common sparsity representation problem in local similarity and motion compensation. Both simulation and experimental results show that the proposed TV-CD algorithm can effectively improve the image reconstruction accuracy and quality of HCUP, and further promote the practical applications of HCUP in capturing high-dimensional complex physical, chemical and biological ultrafast optical scenes.

Abstract:Holographic reconstruction is affected by the phase-conjugate wave arising from the symmetry of the complex field. Compressive sensing (CS) has been used in in-line digital holography (DH) to eliminate noise, especially the interference from twin images. Herein, CS with total variation regularization combining autofocusing is presented. It provides an autofocusing function from a single-exposure hologram and obtains reconstructed objects without twin image noise. A series of images at a fixed interval within a reconstruction distance are processed using a two-step iterative shrinkage/thresholding algorithm in CS. It can calculate the focus distance in a larger range around the focal plane using twin-image-free reconstruction, so it can achieve a higher focusing accuracy than traditional focusing methods, including the Laplace operator, absolute gradient operator, and Tamura coefficient. The proposed method is a simple combination of algorithms and a powerful extension that can effectively improve simulated and experimental image quality and handle difficult datasets, which existing algorithms cannot.
Iterative Reconstruction of Diffraction Limited Digital Holography

Abstract:Digital holographic imaging has the characteristics of fast and flexible with simple set up, and it can quantitatively obtain the intensity and phase of objects. The resolution of the reconstructed image is greatly limited by the pixelated imaging detectors during the digitization processing of holograms. Due to the limited diffraction bandwidth, the diffracted beam of each object point can be viewed as a diffractive cone. The lack of diffraction components causes the reconstructed quality to decrease when the detector cannot collect a complete diffracted wave field in the inline holography. In this work, we studied the reconstructed quality of holograms under different sampling forms. The losing diffraction components can be reconstructed by using an iterative algorithm based on energy attenuation and support constraints. We propose three iterative methods. The first is the bicubic interpolation and extrapolation iterative method based on a single small detector. The second is multi-plane extrapolation iterative method. The third is a faithful iterative reconstruction based on a sparse sensor array. When the diffraction component recorded by the hologram is missing, the losing diffraction components can be reconstructed by using the principle of the holographic redundancy. The reduction of reconstruction quality caused by the loss of sampling in the small-sized detector and sparse sensor array in the digital holography can be compensated.

Abstract:Direct millimeter-wave (MMW) holographic imaging, which provides both the amplitude and phase information by using the heterodyne mixing technique, is considered a powerful tool for personnel security surveillance. However, MWW imaging systems usually suffer from the problem of high cost or relatively long data acquisition periods for array or single-pixel systems. In this paper, compressive sensing (CS), which aims at sparse sampling, is extended to direct MMW holographic imaging for reducing the number of antenna units or the data acquisition time. First, following the scalar diffraction theory, an exact derivation of the direct MMW holographic reconstruction is presented. Then, CS reconstruction strategies for complex-valued MMW images are introduced based on the derived reconstruction formula. To pursue the applicability for near-field MMW imaging and more complicated imaging targets, three sparsity bases, including total variance, wavelet, and curvelet, are evaluated for the CS reconstruction of MMW images. We also discuss different sampling patterns for single-pixel, linear array and two-dimensional array MMW imaging systems. Both simulations and experiments demonstrate the feasibility of recovering MMW images from measurements at 1/2 or even 1/4 of the Nyquist rate. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Abstract:This paper presents an iterative reconstruction framework for super-resolution imaging and autofocusing via compressive-sensing-based twin-image-free holography (SRI-AF-CS-TIFH) for 3D (multi-plane) object in compressed holographic imaging. In our proposed framework, in the first step, the Hough transform edge detection method is incorporated into the eigenvalue-based autofocusing algorithm (dubbed as EIG-AF-Hough) to accurately estimate the focus distances for each plane of multi-plane objects from the snapshot measurements; In the second step, nonlinear optimization is used to achieve the super-resolution reconstruction from the same snapshot measurements. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed framework for achieving autofocusing and super-resolution in compressed holographic imaging simultaneously in both simulated and real holographic scenarios.

High-fidelity correspondence imaging in complex media with varying thresholds and 1-bit compressive sensing

Abstract:Here, we report high-fidelity correspondence imaging (CI) in complex media. By introducing varying thresholds to binarize single-pixel light intensities recorded in complex media, dynamic scaling factors can be eliminated. Then, the binarized light intensities and illumination patterns can be fed into a modified 1-bit compressive sensing algorithm to realize high-fidelity object reconstruction. The proposed method can implement object reconstruction with high fidelity in complex media without extra temporal carriers. It is experimentally verified that the method can effectively eliminate dynamic scaling factors and realize high-fidelity object reconstruction in complex media where conventional CI methods could fail. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method broadens a potential application of CI in complex media, e.g., turbid water, biological tissues, and dynamic smoke.
