Abstract:Individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have shown impaired performance in canonical and nonsocial working memory (WM). However, no study has investigated social WM and its early development. Using biological motion stimuli, our study assessed the development of social and nonsocial WM capacity among children with or without ASD across the age span between 4 and 6 (N = 150). While typically developing (TD) children show a rapid development from age 5 to 6, children with ASD showed a delayed development for both social and nonsocial WM capacity, reaching a significant group difference at age 6. Furthermore, we found a negative correlation between social (but not nonsocial) WM capacity and the severity of autistic symptoms among children with ASD. In contrast, there is a positive correlation between both types of WM capacity and intelligence among TD children but not among children with ASD. Our findings thus indicate that individuals with ASD miss the rapid development of WM capacity in early childhood and, particularly, their delayed social WM development might contribute to core symptoms that critically depend on social information processing.
Individual Differences in Working Memory Capacity Are Reflected in Different ERP and EEG Patterns to Task Difficulty

Abstract:This study examined whether there are neural markers of individual differences in working memory (WM) capacity and whether these differences are only manifest when performing a demanding WM task or at all levels of difficulty. Each subject's WM capacity was estimated using a modified digit span task prior to participation in an N-back task that varied difficulty from 1- to 4-back. While performing the N-back task, subjects wore scalp electrodes that allowed measurement of both event-related potentials (ERP) and event-related synchronization and desynchronization (ERS/ERD). Those subjects classified as low WM were more affected by the higher cognitive demands (many more errors in the 4-back task and generally slower responses) than those classified as high WM. These behavioral differences between the two groups were also apparent in the neural markers. Specifically, low WM subjects, when compared with high WM subjects, produced smaller P300 amplitudes and theta ERS, as well as greater alpha ER]) at the most difficult level. Importantly, the observed differences in electrophysiological responses between the two groups were also observed at the lowest difficulty level, not just when the task challenged WM capacity. In addition, P300 amplitudes and alpha ERD responses were found to correlate with individual WM capacities independent of the task difficulty. These results suggest that there are qualitative neural differences among individuals with different WM capacities when approaching cognitive operations. Individuals with high WM capacities may make more efficient use of neural resources to keep their attention focused on the task-relevant information when performing cognitive tasks. Abstract:<section class="article-section__content"><p>Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience spatial working memory deficits and show different encoding mechanisms from typical developing (TD) peers. To effectively describe the encoding strategies of those with ASD and highlight their characteristics in cognitive processing, we adopted improved change detection tasks and added eye‐movement indicators to investigate the chunking function and reference preference of children with and without ASD. The current study included 20 participants with ASD aged 8–16 and 20 TD children matched for age, gender, and intelligence. Experiment 1 used high/low‐structured change detection tasks, and eye‐movement indexes were recorded as they memorized the locations of the items to investigate spatial chunking strategies. In Experiment 2, changes in eye movement patterns were observed by adding a frame of reference. The results suggested different encoding strategies in ASD and TD individuals. The ASD group showed local processing bias and had difficulty adopting chunking strategies in spatial working memory. Eye‐movement analysis suggested that they rarely showed integrated information processing tendency observed in TD children. Moreover, as a compensatory processing, they were more likely to use the frame of reference. In this study, we compared the spatial chunking strategies and reference preference of children with and without ASD, and eye‐movement analysis was used to investigate the processing mechanism. These findings are significant for research on cognitive characteristics of ASD and provide a new focus for working memory training in children with ASD.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Lay Summary</h3><p>The current study suggests that children with autism spectrum disorder are poorer at organizing items into chunks in spatial working memory, but rely more on reference frames. If the purpose of location memory is to strengthen the adaptability of children with autism, it should provide them with more clues or references. If it is for the purpose of intervention such as cognitive training, it should guide them to integrate information to improve the basic cognitive processing efficiency.</p></section>

Visual Working Memory in Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Abstract:Previous research suggests that individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may experience working memory (WM) problems, but the nature of the underlying disruption remains unknown. A recent study (Bodner et al. 2019) found that young adults with ASD experienced intact WM capacity but disruptions in their ability to efficiently filter and allocate attention. The goal of the present study was to extend this work and evaluate potential disruptions in WM capacity and attentional allocation ability in adolescents with ASD. A sample of 38 adolescents with ASD and 39 adolescents without ASD aged 11-15 years completed a computerized WM task. In brief, participants were shown visual arrays consisting of four or six colored stimuli (circles and squares). After a short delay, memory for one of the stimuli was probed. Importantly, participants were informed beforehand that one of the shapes (e.g., circles) was more likely to be probed compared to the other shape (e.g., squares) - thus making it strategically beneficial to focus primarily on the high frequency shapes. The ASD group demonstrated overall lower WM capacity compared to the non-ASD group. However, no group differences were seen in attentional allocation. There was also no evidence of sex-related differences in WM performance in adolescents with ASD. Taken together with previous findings, the current results suggest that adolescents with ASD show disruptions in WM capacity that are resolved by adulthood. Future longitudinal research is needed to further disentangle the component processes of WM and the developmental trajectories of these components.

Abstract:Given the close connection between eye movement and frontal lobe functions and some evidence supporting the effect of eye‐tracking training on enhancing cognitive performance mediated by the frontal lobe, this study aimed to explore if after‐school eye‐tracking training can improve the visuospatial working memory (VSWM) and cognitive flexibility performance in children with attention‐deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This study is a non‐randomized cluster trial. Forty children from eight primary schools were selected, half receiving eye‐tracking training for 20 sessions over 9 months, while the other half served as a waitlist control. They were matched on demographic characteristics and baseline cognitive performance. Their VSWM and cognitive flexibility were assessed at the beginning and end of the study. Results showed that children who received eye‐tracking training, but not those on a waitlist, exhibited significant improvements in the total score and working memory span of the VSWM tests, and the correct responses in cognitive flexibility tests. Specifically, VSWM performance at higher span levels (5 or above) yielded a greater improvement. The findings suggest that eye‐tracking training can be a feasible and effective after‐school program for improving working memory and cognitive flexibility performance in children with ADHD and ASD. Abstract:BackgroundRecent studies have examined the effect of computerized cognitive training on working memory (WM), but the behavioral and neural effects were uncertain. Also, few studies have explored WM training effects on children using event-related potentials. The purpose of our study was to investigate the effects of WM training in children, including the effects on behavioral performance and neurophysiological outcomes. MethodsForty-four healthy children (mean age = 7.76 years, SD = 0.57 years, 18 females) were assigned to the training and control groups. Over 20 training sessions, the training group participated in the computation-span and spatial N-back tasks, whereas the control group joined in normal class activities. They all completed the pre- and post-test evaluation of WM tasks (digit span backwards task and N-back task). ResultsThe results showed that WM training led to improved performance in the digit span backwards task and 2-back task of post-test evaluation, shortened P3a and P3b latencies in nontarget trials during the spatial 1-back task, shortened P3a latency in target and nontarget trials, as well as increased P3b amplitude and shortened P3b latency in target trials during the spatial 2-back task. ConclusionsThese results suggested that WM training might enhance children's behavioral performance on WM tasks and brought about neurophysiological changes. This study gives insights into the potential of WM training effects on children's behavioral performance and neurophysiological outcomes.

Abstract:Journal of Attention Disorders, Ahead of Print. Objective:To investigate the neural mechanisms underlying working memory (WM) deficits in children with ADHD.Method:WM was compared between thirty-four children with ADHD and thirty-four matched controls using neuropsychological tests, spatial and verbal versions of modified delayed matching-to-sample (DMTS) tasks, and the event-related potential technique.Results:Children with ADHD demonstrated poor behavioral performance, delayed P3 latencies in high-load spatial modified DMTS tasks during encoding, and delayed P2 and N2 latencies during retrieval in spatial modified DMTS tasks. In high-load verbal modified DMTS tasks during encoding, they showed a smaller P3 amplitude.Discussion:Pronounced deficits in the central executive system in children with ADHD were exhibited by neuropsychological tests and the modified DMTS task. Children with ADHD exhibited a slowing of processing speed during encoding. Under high-load conditions, they showed a reduced P3 amplitude during retrieval, suggesting reduced neural resource allocation was available when the central executive of the working memory was heavily loaded.

Autistic traits are associated with enhanced working memory capacity for abstract visual stimuli

Abstract:We tested whether the association between autistic traits and enhanced performance in visual-perceptual tasks extends to visual working memory capacity. We predicted that any positive effect of autistic traits on visual working memory performance would be greatest during domain-specific tasks, in which visual resources must be relied upon. We used a visual 'matrix' task, involving recall of black-and-white chequered patterns which increased in size, to establish participants' capacity (span). We assessed 144 young adults' (M = 22.0 years, SD = 2.5) performance on abstract, 'low semantic' versus 'high semantic' task versions. The latter offered multimodal coding due to the availability of long-term memory resources that could supplement visual working memory. Participants also completed measures of autistic traits and trait anxiety. Autistic traits, especially Attention to Detail, Attention Switching, and Communication, positively predicted visual working memory capacity, specifically in the low semantic task, which relies on visual working memory resources. Autistic traits are therefore associated with enhanced processing and recall of visual information. The benefit is removed, however, when multimodal coding may be incorporated, emphasising the visual nature of the benefit. Strengths in focused attention to detail therefore appear to benefit domain-specific visual working memory task performance.
Contributions of filtering and attentional allocation to working memory performance in individuals with autism spectrum disorder.

Abstract:Past findings on working memory (WM) ability in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are mixed. The present objective was to assess not only the integrity of WM capacity, but also the potential contribution of filtering ability and attentional selection to WM performance, in individuals with ASD. A sample of 24 participants with ASD (<i>M</i><sub>age</sub> = 19.6 years) and 24 typically developing participants without ASD (<i>M</i><sub>age</sub> = 20.3 years) participated. Participants completed a computerized paradigm designed to systematically assess WM capacity, visual filtering ability, and attentional selection. In brief, participants were shown visual arrays consisting of 2-8 colored stimuli (circles and/or squares). After a short delay, memory for one of the stimuli was probed. Importantly, participants were informed beforehand that one of the shape types (e.g., circles) was more likely to be probed compared to the other shape type (e.g., squares) - thus making it strategically advantageous to focus on the high frequency shapes and to filter/ignore the low frequency shapes. Eye tracking data were simultaneously collected. The ASD group demonstrated intact WM capacity and filtering ability, but disrupted ability to efficiently allocate capacity under the demands of high WM load. Analysis of eye tracking data suggests the groups may have differed in their strategic approach to encoding stimuli which may have, in turn, contributed to the aforementioned impairment. Findings support the assertion that disruptions in secondary processes such as strategy use and attentional selection may have played a role in previous reports of WM impairment in ASD. Exploring the spatial working memory and visual perception in children with autism spectrum disorder and general population with high autism-like traits

Abstract:The aim of the study is to compare the spatial working memory and visual perception between children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and typically developing control (TDC). Furthermore, this study validated whether this impairment was a feature of autism in general population with different autism-like traits (ALTs). This study contains two parts: case-control study and community population study. The ASD group and the control group were enlisted voluntarily (ASD group, n = 52; control group, n = 32). In the population study, we recruited 2994 children. Based on the scores of Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ), children were divided into two groups (higher ALTs n = 122, lower ALTs n = 122). The participants completed the cognition tasks focusing on spatial working memory, visual-motor integration, and Intelligence. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was conducted, with potential confounders IQ, age, and gender were controlled. Pearson correlations were computed by controlling the IQ and age as covariate to better understand the relations between visual perception, spatial working memory, and autism-like traits. In the case-control study, the results of cognition tasks focusing on the spatial working memory and visual perception indicated underperformance in children with ASD. In the community population study, we found that individuals with higher ALTs performed worse than children with lower ALTs in spatial working memory. Pearson correlation analysis suggested that a correlation between SWM total errors and visual perception was identified both in the children with ASD and in community population (ASD group, r = -0.592, p<0.001; general population, r = -0.201, p = 0.003). It suggested that spatial working memory deficit was a characteristic of autism, and may be distributed across the general population. Furthermore, we speculated a correlation between spatial working memory and visual perception in children with ASD and in general population.

Abstract:Background: The executive functions of inhibition, planning, flexible shifting of actions, and working memory are commonly reported to be impaired in neurodevelopmental disorders. Method: We compared these abilities in children (8–12 years) with high functioning autism (HFA, n = 17), attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD, n = 21) and healthy controls (n = 32). Response inhibition was assessed using the Stroop Color and Word Test (Golden, 1978). Problem solving, set-shifting, and nonverbal memory were assessed using three tasks, respectively, from the CANTAB® (Cambridge Cognition, 1996): the Stockings of Cambridge task; the Intra-Dimensional/Extra-Dimensional set-shifting task; and the Spatial Working Memory task (SWM) with tokens hidden behind 3, 4, 6, and 8 boxes. Results: There were no group differences on the response inhibition, planning, or set-shifting tasks. On the SWM task, children with HFA made significantly more between-searcherrors compared with controls on both the most difficult problems (8-box) and on the mid-difficulty problems (6-box); however, children with ADHD made significantly more errors compared to controls on the most difficult (8-box) problems only. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that spatial working memory is impaired in both ADHD and HFA, and more severely in the latter. More detailed investigation is needed to examine the mechanisms that differentially impair spatial working memory, but on this set of tasks there appears to be sparing of other executive functions in these neuropsychiatric developmental disorders.

Abstract:Background School-age children rely on prospective memory (PM) to complete various tasks in the future. Previous research suggests children with autism spectrum disorders exhibit PM impairment, but whether PM impairment extends to children with higher autistic traits remains unclear. In the present study, we aimed to compare PM performance in children with higher and lower autistic traits and to examine potentially differential associations to executive functions. Method Forty pairs of children with higher and lower autistic traits between age 6- to 12-years old completed event-, time-, and activity-based PM tasks, and two executive function tasks (i.e., inhibition and working memory). We also collected parents-rated PM abilities using the Prospective and Retrospective Memory Questionnaire for Children. Results The two groups showed similar performance in both executive function tasks, the 3 PM tasks and parents-reported PM in daily life. In children with lower autistic traits, performance of the time-based PM task was correlated with working memory whereas it was correlated with inhibition function in children with higher autistic traits. Moreover, children with higher autistic traits exhibited a continuous reduction of time monitoring behavior across trials, leading to worse performance in the last PM trial compared with children with lower autistic traits. Conclusion Children with higher autistic traits showed intact executive functioning and similar PM performance as children with lower autistic traits, but they relied on different types of executive functions to complete time-based PM tasks. Moreover, children with higher autistic traits showed reduced time monitoring behavior and unstable PM performance across time.

Abstract:Background: Short-term and working memory (STM and WM) deficits have been demonstrated in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and may emerge through atypical functional activity and connectivity of the frontoparietal network, which exerts top-down control necessary for successful STM and WM processes. Little is known regarding the spectral properties of the frontoparietal network during STM or WM processes in ASD, although certain neural frequencies have been linked to specific neural mechanisms.Methods: We analysed magnetoencephalographic data from 39 control adults (26 males; 27.15 ± 5.91 years old) and 40 adults with ASD (26 males; 27.17 ± 6.27 years old) during a 1-back condition (STM) of an n-back task, and from a subset of this sample during a 2-back condition (WM). We performed seed-based connectivity analyses using regions of the frontoparietal network. Interregional synchrony in theta, alpha, and beta bands was assessed with the phase difference derivative and compared between groups during periods of maintenance and recognition.Results: During maintenance of newly presented vs. repeated stimuli, the two groups did not differ significantly in theta, alpha, or beta phase synchrony for either condition. Adults with ASD showed alpha-band synchrony in a network containing the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, bilateral inferior parietal lobules (IPL), and precuneus in both 1- and 2-back tasks, whereas controls demonstrated alpha-band synchrony in a sparser set of regions, including the left insula and IPL, in only the 1-back task. During recognition of repeated vs. newly presented stimuli, adults with ASD exhibited decreased theta-band connectivity compared to controls in a network with hubs in the right inferior frontal gyrus and left IPL in the 1-back condition. Whilst there were no group differences in connectivity in the 2-back condition, adults with ASD showed no frontoparietal network recruitment during recognition, whilst controls activated networks in the theta and beta bands.Conclusions: Our findings suggest that since adults with ASD performed well on the n-back task, their appropriate, but effortful recruitment of alpha-band mechanisms in the frontoparietal network to maintain items in STM and WM may compensate for atypical modulation of this network in the theta band to recognise previously presented items in STM.

Abstract:Objective:To explore the features of executive function and theory of mind in Chinese children with high functioning autism and the association between executive function,theory of mind and symptom of autism.Methods:Twenty children who were diagnosed as autism according to the criteria of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders,Fourth Edition(DSM-IV) and 22 normal controls were collected as samples.The groups were matched by age and gender.The Rey complex figure test,Stroop color-word task,digit span test,trail making test,tower of Hanoi,verbal fluency test were used to access executive function,and the representational change task and false belief task were used to assess their theory of minnd in these children.The autism children also were assessed with the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule(ADOS).Results:The performance of autism group were poorer than normal controls in test immediate memory detail score [(5.2±5.7) vs.(10.8±6.5) ] and delay recalling detail score[(5.1±6.1) vs.(11.3±6.4)] of Rey complex figure,verbal fluency test [(15.6±6.9) vs.(21.1±5.2)],the first task [(24.8±17.3) s vs.(16.3±4.1) s] and the fourth task[(61.0±33.3) s vs.(41.3±11.2) s] of Stroop color-word task,the completion [(5/15) vs.(16/6)] and the incorrect steps [(3.7±2.2) vs.(0.8±0.9)] of tower of Hanoi,representational change task [(15/5)vs.(22/0)] and false belief task(13/7)vs.(22/0)](P<0.05).Rey complex figure test and verbal fluency test were negatively associated with the scores of ADOS(r=-0.45——0.73,P<0.05).Stroop color-word task,tower of Hanoi,representational change task and false belief task were positively associated with the score of ADOS(r=0.44-0.57,P<0.05).Conclusion:It suggests that the children with high functioning autism may have impairments in executive function and theory of mind.The impairment of executive function and theory of mind may be correlated with severer symptoms of autism.
Visual search strategies of children with and without autism spectrum disorders during an embedded figures task

Abstract:Individuals with ASD often demonstrate superior performance on embedded figures tasks (EFTs). We investigated visual scanning behaviour in children with ASD during an EFT in an attempt replicating a previous study examining differences in visual search behaviour. Twenty-three children with, and 31 children without an ASD were shown 16 items from the Figure-Ground subtest of the TVPS-3 while wearing an eye tracker. Children with ASD exhibited fewer fixations, and less time per fixation, on the target figure. Accuracy was similar between the two groups. There were no other noteworthy differences between children with and without ASD. Differences in visual scanning patterns in the presence of typical behavioural performance suggest that any purported differences in processing style may not be detrimental to cognitive performance and further refinement of the current methodology may lead to support for a purported advantageous cognitive style.

Inefficient and unique processing of social–emotional interference in school-aged children with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder

Abstract:Introduction: Interest is growing in investigating the ability of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to process social information under conflicting and complex environments. However, few studies have employed objective behavioral measures to directly explore the underlying profile of social–emotional interference control. Methods: In the current study, 53 children with ASD and 53 typically developing (TD) control, aged 6–12 years, completed a set of modified flanker tasks involving arrows, schematic faces, same real faces (with facial interference by the same person), and different real faces (with facial interference by different people), respectively. Response time in incongruent (RT Inc ) and congruent conditions (RT Con ), percentage of errors in incongruent (%Error Inc ) and congruent conditions (%Error Con ), and flanker effect calculated by ΔRT = (RT Inc − RT Con )/RT Con and Δ%Error = %Error Inc − %Error Con were used as outcome metrics. Results: We obtained three major results: (1) the ASD group had longer RT Inc and RT Con compared to the TD group in the arrow, schematic face, and same real-face tasks; (2) compared with the performance in the arrow flanker task, both groups exhibited longer RTs and reduced ΔRTs in the same real-face task; however, in the schematic-face task, longer RT and reduced ΔRT were exhibited in the TD group, but not in the ASD group; and (3) in the different real-face task, ASD group had higher %Error than the TD group, and %Error was negatively correlated with RT only in the ASD group. Conclusion: The current study delineates the inefficient processing of social–emotional interference in school-aged children with ASD and further suggests that these children might adopt a relatively optimized strategy like symbolization when dealing with emotional conflict. However, such compensatory cognitive strategies may be exhausted along with the increase in information load. These findings provide new perspectives of considering the difference more than difficulty in the cognitive profile of ASD, which will benefit the development of targeted behavioral interventions.

Altered Resting-State Functional Activity in Patients With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Quantitative Meta-Analysis.

Abstract:Background: There is accumulating evidence showing that patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have obvious changes in resting-state functional brain activity. So far, there have been no meta-analyses of the resting-state brain activity alterations in patients with ASD. We attempted to explore the resting-state functional activity changes in patients with ASD, possibly providing a new perspective for investigating the pathophysiology of patients with ASD. Methods: We screened relevant studies published before August 2017 in PubMed, Ovid, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and the Wan-fang database. Fifteen resting-state functional neural activity datasets (including 382 patients and 348 healthy controls) were included. Through the use of the effect-size signed differential mapping (ES-SDM) method, we carried out a meta-analysis of resting-state functional activity studies of patients with ASD. Results: Compared with healthy controls, patients with ASD showed hyperactivity in the right supplementary motor area, middle frontal gyrus, inferior frontal gyrus, the left precentral gyrus, and the bilateral cerebellum hemispheric lobule (VIII/IX), and hypoactivity in the right middle temporal gyrus, superior temporal gyrus, and the left precuneus, posterior cingulate cortex, median cingulate cortex, and bilateral cerebellum (crus I). Conclusion: This meta-analysis indicates that patients with ASD have significant and robust resting-state brain activity alterations in the language comprehension network, inferior-posterior cerebellum, default mode network (DMN), and cerebellar crus I. These brain regions may serve as specific regions of interest for further studies of ASD, which will allow us to further clarify the neurobiological mechanisms in patients with ASD.

Abstract:Objective:To evaluate the characteristic of verbal working memory in patients with different early adulthood outcomes of attention-deficit /hyperactivity disorder( ADHD). Methods: A total of 64 subjects,previously diagnosed in their childhood as attention-deficit /hyperactivity disorder( ADHD) by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders,Fourth Edition( DSM-IV),were reexamined in their early adulthood( aged between 18to 24) at a follow-up assessment. By utilizing the Conners' Adult ADHD Diagnostic Interview,subjects were classified into two groups with different clinical outcomes, including 28 persistent ADHD subjects and 21 remittent ADHD subjects. A healthy control group of 26 subjects with matched sex ratio and intelligence quotient( IQ) level was also involved for comparison. Together they were tested in an n-back task of 3 working memory load levels( 0-back,1-back and 2-back). The reaction time( RT),accuracy rate and the intra-individual standard deviation of RT( ISD) among the 3 groups were then compared in each load levels. Results: For all the subjects,their performance of RT and ISD increased with the increasing of working memory load level( P 0. 001),while the accuracy rate showed an opposite trend( P 0. 001). The RT was longer in those with persistent ADHD [( 507. 7 ± 79. 7) ms]than those with remittent ADHD [( 454. 8 ± 65. 9) ms] and than those healthy controls [( 446. 6 ± 52. 4) ms],P 0. 01. In addition,the ISD was significantly higher in subjects with persistent ADHD [( 164. 4 ± 33. 1) ms] than those with remittent ADHD [( 142. 4 ± 40. 9) ms]and healthy controls [( 141. 3 ± 32. 2) ms],P 0. 05. No differences in RT and ISD were found between subjects with remittent ADHD and controls. Conclusion: It suggests that verbal working memory deficit may still remain in patients with persistent ADHD,however not in those with remittent ADHD,in supportive of the hypothesis that recovery over the course of development is associated with improvements in executive control functions.
Some Effects of Specific Interest on the Brain of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) : A Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Study

Abstract:Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neuro-developmental disorder, characterized by two major domains: impairments in the social cognition and communication as well as restricted, repetitive, stereotyped interests and behaviors. In this study, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) was applied to investigate the atypical activation pattern of language areas (bilateral inferior frontal gyrus and bilateral temporal cortex) and uncover the impact of a specific interest on the brain function of children with ASD. We employed a listening comprehension task to stimulate the language areas of 2 ASD boys (A1 and A2) who had strong interests in the experiment material ("Lightning McQueen") and another 2 ASD boys (A3 and A4) who were matched with A1 and A2 respectively by age, intelligence quotient, language ability and the severity of symptoms. Our results showed that, during the task, the picture of "Lightning McQueen", but not the words of "The little red car", elicited stronger activation in the bilateral inferior frontal gyrus and temporal cortex of A1 and A2 than A3 and A4. These results could facilitate our understanding of language development of ASD and reconsider the role of specific interests (especially visual stimuli) played in the brain functional development of ASD.

Abstract:Previous findings on planning abilities in individuals with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder (HFA) are inconsistent. Exploring possible reasons for these mixed findings, the current study investigated the involvement of memory in planning performance in 15 children with HFA and 17 typically developing controls. In addition to planning abilities (measured with the Tower of London), short-term memory and delayed recall for verbal as well as visuospatial material were assessed. Findings suggest that particularly reduced efficiency in visuospatial short-term memory is associated with Tower task planning deficits in children with HFA.
