Abstract:The Matrix deals with the imaginary future and the events in the virtual space that the digital computer creates. It is noticed that The Matrix employs the concepts of time and space from many scenes of Alice in Wonderland. Especially, the imaginary world of The Matrix produced by the cinematic imagination excites the audience to expand their horizon of cognition from the reality to the hyper-reality, that is, the virtual world. The meaning of 'virtual' is not different from that of the term, 'virtual' which is discussed in Gilles Deleuze's Difference and Repetition, Logic of Sense and others. In other words, the virtual world in SF film is not in the state of being realized. However, the fantastical nonsense world in The Matrix and Alice in Wonderland is important in that the world reflects the reality of simulacre in today's life. As there is interconnection between time (of the past, present, and future) and space (of inside and outside of the consciousness), an event in one time and space influences the other event in the other time and space. It is clear that time and space function as key topological axes to influence human consciousness as well as human life. Humans understand and recognize time and space as much as they perceive them. On the other hand, if time and space in an event are out of human recognition, the event itself is regarded as one of nonsense. Nevertheless, the unrealistic virtuality of nonsense in The Matrix and Alice in Wonderland brings us to an awakening of another implication of it. In French, sense has two implications. One is direction, and the other is meaning. But nonsense has neither direction nor meaning. This indicates that nonsense has more ways to escape and more potential to expand. This virtual world is a world of nonsense which eventually serves a domain of sense. In other words, the virtual world is no other than the world of nonsense, in which a world of sense will be realized. On the other hand, a speedy conversion of time and space from the real world to the virtual world and vice versa makes the audience confused, but a repetition of the differences between those two separate worlds produces an exotic sense of time and space. According to Deleuze's thought, aesthetic aspects can be experienced from the aesthetic assemblage of differences between singularities of the inside and outside worlds. Therefore, the aesthetics of time and space in The Matrix and Alice in Wonderland comes out of the singular aesthetic assemblage of sense and nonsense. In addition, a duality of time and space in The Matrix as well as Alice in Wonderland brings us to the realization of sensibility and art.
