Health Care Management Review
Abstract:Leaders may experience greater social distancing from colleagues and limited social support while managing complex trade-offs and increased demands, which can lead to isolation and vulnerability. Some of these pressures stem from the romanticized perception of leaders as heroes who solve problems and achieve success as independent agents. There is a recognized socioemotional cost of being a leader, where loneliness has been called a "professional hazard," with a lack of professional support ( Zumaeta, 2019 ). This isolation and vulnerability stemming from our individualistic ideals can present significant barriers to the success of leaders.
