Abstract:With the prevalence of green chemistry and the concept of a harmonious society, humans have much greater environmental awareness than ever before. Mesoporous TiO 2 and its corresponding photocatalysts can assist the search for a better and more ideal life. In this review, we first briefly introduce the development of various mesoporous materials, after which we discuss the preparation and application of mesoporous TiO 2 materials in photocatalysis. When titanium oxide-based mesoporous materials are applied in photocatalysis, they exhibit excellent performance and many advantages in pollutant decomposition and H 2 evolution. In addition to the traditional TiO 2 -based mesoporous materials, novel materials such as Ti-metal organic frameworks are reviewed, as their application in H 2 evolution has garnered increasing research interest in recent years. It is evident from literature surveys that these TiO 2 -based mesoporous photocatalysts have significant potential for use in environmental and energy applications.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) materials have been intensively studied in the past years because of many varied applications. This mini review article focuses on TiO2 micro and nano architectures with the prevalent crystal structures (anatase, rutile, brookite, and TiO2(B)), and summarizes the major advances in the surface and interface engineering and applications in environmental and electrochemical applications. We analyze the advantages of surface/interface engineered TiO2 micro and nano structures, and present the principles and growth mechanisms of TiO2 nanostructures via different strategies, with an emphasis on rational control of the surface and interface structures. We further discuss the applications of TiO2 micro and nano architectures in photocatalysis, lithium/sodium ion batteries, and Li-S batteries. Throughout the discussion, the relationship between the device performance and the surface/interface structures of TiO2 micro and nano structures will be highlighted. Then, we discuss the phase transitions of TiO2 nanostructures and possible strategies of improving the phase stability. The review concludes with a perspective on the current challenges and future research directions.

Abstract:TiO2-based catalysts with various surface heterostructures (0D, 1D, 2D, and 3D) have been widely researched owing to their cost-effectiveness, high stability, and environmentally friendly nature, and can be used for many applications in various fields, including hydrogen production and pollutant degradation. However, there are also many existing problems limiting their practical application, such as their large band gap and rapid electron–hole recombination rate. Owing to the abundance of recent achievements in materials science, we will summarize the recent structural engineering strategies which provide favorable photocatalytic activity enhancements, such as enhanced visible light absorption, stability, an increased charge–carrier separation rate and improved specific surface area. Among the various structural engineering methods in this review, we will introduce TiO2-based materials with different dimensional structures. Meanwhile, we also discuss recent achievements in synthesis methods and application of TiO2-based catalysts in various fields. We aim to display a comprehensive overview which can be a guide for the development of a new generation of TiO2-based catalysts according to their structural design for enhanced solar energy conversion.

Abstract:Nanoporous TiO2 spheres have emerged recently as a new class of TiO2 nanomaterials for photochemical applications. Compared with conventional TiO2 nanoparticles, the spherical assemblies consisting of low-dimensional nanocrystallites present significant advantages in terms of structural isotropy, monodisperse nature, structural diversity on nano- and (sub)micro-scales, structural stability, light harvesting property, interconnected nanobuilding blocks with less grain boundary, and easy reclaim. Superior performances have been demonstrated in the fields of photoelectrocatalysis and photovoltaics. Research efforts have been devoted to the rational design of a synthetic strategy for the facile preparation of nanoporous TiO2 spheres. The last decade has witnessed rapid progress in developing a synthesis strategy of nanoporous TiO2 spheres for optimal photochemical applications. Both chemical and physical routes have been extensively developed aiming to ease control over the self-assembly of nanobuilding blocks and, thus, the resultant textural properties and physicochemical performances of the nanoporous TiO2 spheres. In this review, a comprehensive description of different synthetic strategies is first presented, with a special emphasis on the formation mechanism, in particular, the pathway followed by nanocrystallites to self-assemble into a spherical structure. Notable experimental parameters are also discussed for the reproducible and controllable preparation of nanoporous TiO2 spheres with well-defined hierarchical structure, tunable porous microstructure from assembled nanobuilding blocks, and optimal physicochemical properties. Important applications in environmental photocatalysis, solar fuel synthesis, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs), and perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are summarized, and the synthesis-component-structure-property relationship in nanoporous TiO2 spheres is highlighted. Finally, perspectives in this rapidly developing field are offered.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) stands out as a versatile transition‐metal oxide with applications ranging from energy conversion/storage and environmental remediation to sensors and optoelectronics. While extensively researched for these emerging applications, TiO2 has also achieved commercial success in various fields including paints, inks, pharmaceuticals, food additives, and advanced medicine. Thanks to the tunability of their structural, morphological, optical, and electronic characteristics, TiO2 nanomaterials are among the most researched engineering materials. Besides these inherent advantages, the low cost, low toxicity, and biocompatibility of TiO2 nanomaterials position them as a sustainable choice of functional materials for energy conversion. Although TiO2 is a classical photocatalyst well‐known for its structural stability and high surface activity, TiO2‐based photocatalysis is still an active area of research particularly in the context of catalyzing artificial photosynthesis. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the latest developments and emerging trends in TiO2 heterostructures and hybrids for artificial photosynthesis. We begin by discussing the common synthesis methods for TiO2 nanomaterials, including hydrothermal synthesis and sol‐gel synthesis. We then delve into TiO2 nanomaterials and their photocatalytic mechanisms, highlighting the key advancements that have been made in recent years. We discuss the strategies to enhance the photocatalytic efficiency of TiO2, including surface modification, doping modulation, heterojunction construction, and synergy of composite materials, with a specific emphasis on their applications in artificial photosynthesis. TiO2‐based heterostructures and hybrids present exciting opportunities for catalyzing solar fuel production, organic degradation, and CO2 reduction via artificial photosynthesis. This review offers an overview of the latest trends and advancements, while also highlighting the ongoing challenges and prospects for future developments in this classical yet rapidly evolving field. Abstract:This review comprehensively summarized the progresses in the design and modification of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanostructures as photoelectrode materials for photoelectrochemistry (PEC) applications, mainly in solar-fuel conversion. Various kinds of TiO2 nanostructures including the nanoparticulate, one-dimensional (nanowires, nanorods, nanotubes), two-dimensional (nanobelt, nanoribbon, nanosheet), three-dimensional (meso/nanoporous, branched nanostructures, etc.), and the crystal-facet tailored TiO2 nanostructures are surveyed and discussed. For each type of nanostructure, the commonly-used and effective modification strategies are reviewed followed with a deep discussion on the properties relevant to PEC performances. Moreover, the surface modification approaches (surface disordering, passivation and decoration) on TiO2 nanostructures are highlighted for developing efficient TiO2-based PEC cells. This review will serve as a good resource or guideline for researchers who are currently focusing on TiO2 materials as well as for those who are interested in versatile semiconductor-based PEC applications.

Abstract:TiO2 is the most important photocatalyst for numerous processes, but effective only under UV light irradiation due to its large band gap (3.0-3.2 eV). It is a long time goal to achieve visible light photocatalytic activity by tuning the band structure of TiO2. In recent years, the core-shell structured TiO2 has emerged as a novel material with enhanced visible light absorption and photocatalytic efficiency. It is generally recognized that core-shell structured materials are composite materials, namely, the core contains a component and the shell is comprised of another component. In contrast, the core-shell structured TiO2 is a single component core-shell structured material, in which the core and shell contain the same component but with different structures. As the first review for the single component core-shell structured TiO2, this article systemically evaluates the synthesis approaches of the novel core-shell TiO2 materials, discusses their unique structures, summarizes their applications, and provides a perspective for future research.

Abstract:Because of its unmatched resource potential, solar energy utilization currently is one of the hottest research areas. Much effort has been devoted to developing advanced materials for converting solar energy into electricity, solar fuels, active chemicals, or heat. Among them, TiO2 nanomaterials have attracted much attention due to their unique properties such as low cost, nontoxicity, good stability and excellent optical and electrical properties. Great progress has been made, but research opportunities are still present for creating new nanostructured TiO2 materials. Core-shell structured nanomaterials are of great interest as they provide a platform to integrate multiple components into a functional system, showing improved or new physical and chemical properties, which are unavailable from the isolated components. Consequently, significant effort is underway to design, fabricate and evaluate core-shell structured TiO2 nanomaterials for solar energy utilization to overcome the remaining challenges, for example, insufficient light absorption and low quantum efficiency. This review strives to provide a comprehensive overview of major advances in the synthesis of core-shell structured TiO2 nanomaterials for solar energy utilization. This review starts from the general protocols to construct core-shell structured TiO2 nanomaterials, and then discusses their applications in photocatalysis, water splitting, photocatalytic CO2 reduction, solar cells and photothermal conversion. Finally, we conclude with an outlook section to offer some insights on the future directions and prospects of core-shell structured TiO2 nanomaterials and solar energy conversion.

Abstract:TiO2-based photocatalysts, being inexpensive and abundant, in conjunction with having high photostability and environmentally friendly characteristics, are the most extensively studied photocatalytic material for hydrogen production and pollutant degradation. However, its existing issues, such as wide bandgap, high overpotential and rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers limit its photocatalytic properties. The opportunities for structural development of a TiO2 nanomaterial towards highly efficient and pragmatic photocatalysis applications are evidently plentiful. Hence, in this review, we will look into critical structural engineering strategies that give favorable physicochemical properties such as improved light absorption, photostability, charge-carrier dynamics, increase surface area etc. that benefit photocatalysis functionalities. Amongst the various structural engineering options, we will be covering the most prevalent and elegant core-shell and hierarchical structural designs, which rationally combine the advantages of structural manipulation and multi-material composition engineering. This review aims to provide a comprehensive and contemporary overview, as well as a guide of the development of new generation TiO2 based photocatalysts via structural design for improved solar energy conversion technologies.
Single-crystalline Ultrathin 2D TiO2 Nanosheets: A Bridge Towards Superior Photovoltaic Devices

Abstract:Ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) TiO2 nanostructures with atomic-level thickness are urgently demanded to achieve high-performance photocatalytic, photovoltaic, and electrochemical devices, by taking advantage of their unique characteristics of large surface-to-volume ratio, distinctive electronic properties, and intriguing chemical reactivity. Here, we present a molecular self-assembly of single-crystalline ultrathin 2D TiO2 nanosheets from a micelle-assisted solution. Via this synthesis strategy, highly-homogeneous ultrathin 2D TiO2 nanosheets with a thickness around 3 nm were obtained with relatively large production. The ultrathin 2D TiO2 nanosheet composite has a dominant anatase phase and a trace of rutile phase. It is interesting that highly reactive, non-equilibrium surfaces, such as the anatase {010} and rutile {001} facets, were observed in the fabricated nanosheets, which are very difficult to obtain by conventional synthesis methods but extremely useful for improving the performance of TiO2 nanostructures. Owing to the unique features of single-crystallinity, atomic-level thickness, highly reactive exposed surfaces, etc., the ultrathin 2D TiO2 nanosheets possess superior photochemical properties. With photoanodes made from ultrathin 2D TiO2 nanosheets, dye-sensitized solar cells showed significantly enhanced efficiency (8.28%) compared to ones with commercial Degussa P25 TiO2 nanoparticle anode (5.12%). This new family of graphene-like TiO2 nanosheets thus paves the way to further improving the performance of TiO2-based energy conversion and storage devices.

Abstract:Heterogenous photocatalysis is regarded as the holy grain of energy and environmental issues with which our society is currently struggling. In this context, the characterization of titanium dioxide nanostructures and of the relation between structural / electronic parameters and chemical / physical-chemical properties is a primary target, whose achievement is highly demanding. Theoretical simulations can strongly support the experiments to reach this goal. While bulk and surface properties of TiO 2 materials have been quite well understood, the field of nanostructures still present few unexplored areas. Here we consider the possibile approaches for the modeling of reduced and extended TiO 2 nanostructures and we review the main outcomes on the investigation of the structural, electronic and optical properties of TiO 2 nanoparticles and their relation with the size, morpholgoy and shape of the particles. Further investigations are higly desirable to fill the gaps still present and allows to improve the efficiency of these materials in photocatalytic and photovoltaic applications.

Abstract:Renewable fuels and environmental remediation are of paramount importance in today's world due to escalating concerns about climate change, pollution, and the finite nature of fossil fuels. Transitioning to sustainable energy sources and addressing environmental pollution has become an urgent necessity. Photocatalysis, particularly harnessing solar energy to drive chemical reactions for environmental remediation and clean fuel production, holds significant promise among emerging technologies. As a benchmark semiconductor in photocatalysis, TiO 2 photocatalyst offers an excellent solution for environmental remediation and serves as a key tool in energy conversion and chemical synthesis. Despite its status as the default photocatalyst, TiO 2 suffers from drawbacks such as a high recombination rate of charge carriers, low electrical conductivity, and limited absorption in the visible light spectrum. This review provides an in-depth exploration of the fundamental principles of photocatalytic reactions and presents recent advancements in the development of TiO 2 photocatalysts. It specifically focuses on strategic approaches aimed at enhancing the performance of TiO 2 photocatalysts, including improving visible light absorption for efficient solar energy harvesting, enhancing charge separation and transportation efficiency, and ensuring stability for robust photocatalysis. Additionally, the review delves into the application of photodegradation and photocatalysis, particularly in critical processes such as water splitting, carbon dioxide reduction, nitrogen fixation, hydrogen peroxide generation, and alcohol oxidation. It also highlights the novel use of TiO 2 in plastic polymerization and degradation, showcasing its potential for converting plastic waste into valuable chemicals and fuels, thereby offering sustainable waste management solutions. By addressing these essential areas, the review offers valuable insights into the potential of TiO 2 photocatalysis for addressing pressing environmental and energy challenges. Furthermore, the review encompasses the application of TiO 2 photochromic systems, expanding its scope to include other innovative research and applications. Finally, it addresses the underlying challenges and provides perspectives on the future development of TiO 2 photocatalysts. Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanomaterials have been widely used in photocatalytic energy conversion and environmental remediation due to their advantages of low cost, chemical stability, and relatively high photo-activity. However, applications of TiO2 have been restricted in the ultraviolet range because of the wide band gap. Broadening the light absorption of TiO2 nanomaterials is an efficient way to improve the photocatalytic activity. Thus, black TiO2 with extended light response range in the visible light and even near infrared light has been extensively exploited as efficient photocatalysts in the last decade. This review represents an attempt to conclude the recent developments in black TiO2 nanomaterials synthesized by modified treatment, which presented different structure, morphological features, reduced band gap, and enhanced solar energy harvesting efficiency. Special emphasis has been given to the newly developed synthetic methods, porous black TiO2, and the approaches for further improving the photocatalytic activity of black TiO2. Various black TiO2, doped black TiO2, metal-loaded black TiO2 and black TiO2 heterojunction photocatalysts, and their photocatalytic applications and mechanisms in the field of energy and environment are summarized in this review, to provide useful insights and new ideas in the related field.

Abstract:<p>Photocatalysis driven by functionalized metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is a promising direction for the development of renewable energy conversion and environmental pollution rehabilitation by direct utilization of solar energy. Among various MOFs, titanium (Ti)-based MOFs (Ti-MOFs) are an appealing set of MOFs for practical applications due to their relation to the commonly used TiO<sub>2</sub>, their unique structural features, relatively low toxicity and excellent optical properties. This review summarizes recent research progress on Ti-MOFs and their composites as well as the porous materials derived from them in photocatalytic applications. The selection of appropriate central metal ions and organic ligands has significant influence on the fabrication of Ti-MOFs with good photocatalytic properties. To regulate the photoresponse and photocatalytic activity, controllable integration of a Ti-MOF system with photo-sensitive materials, resulting in the formation of new multifunctional hybrids, is required. In addition, the calcination of Ti-MOF precursors provides a useful method for preparing promising photocatalysts with novel structures, close contact interfaces, and easy regulation. Finally, the opportunities and challenges for future exploration of Ti-MOFs are discussed from a critical perspective along with those of their composites and derived porous materials.</p>

Abstract:Nonstoichiometric titanium dioxide nanostructured thin film (TNF) has attracted a range of interest in the green energy field. In this paper, we introduce the glancing angle deposition (GLAD) technique to produce the amorphous TNFs with discrete nanoscale columnar structures. In order to improve the crystallinity and/or gain the Ti3+ doped states, amorphous TNFs were annealed at 400 C-omicron in air or H-2. XRD, SEM, AFM, XPS and PL were used to characterize the crystallization structure morphology, chemical state, PL properties of the TNFs with different annealing conditions. Photocatalytic activities of the samples were reflected by decolorization experiments of methylene blue (MB) solution irradiated by the simulated sunlight light of AM 1.5 G. The photocatalytic activity of amorphous TNF is higher than that of conventional TiO2 thin film, indicating the prominent properties of nanostructures. Compared with annealing in air, the photocatalytic activity of TiO2-x nanostructures annealed in hydrogen is further increased and higher. The results demonstrated that Ti3+ and oxygen vacancies were beneficial and played the dominant role for the enhancement of photocatalytic activity. (C) 2017 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:Semiconductor photocatalysts have important applications in renewable energy and environment fields. To overcome the serious drawbacks of low efficiency and narrow light-response range in most stable semiconcluctor photocatalysts, many strategies have been developed in the past decades. This review attempts to provide a comprehensive update and examination of some fundamental issues in titania (TiO2)-based semiconductor photocatalysts, Such as crystal growth, doping and heterostructuring. We focus especially on recent progress in exploring new strategies to design TiO2-based photocatalysts with unique Structures and properties, elucidating the chemical states and distribution of dopants in doped TiO2, designing and fabricating integrated heterostructure. photocatalysts with different charge-carrier transfer pathways, and finally identifying the key factors in determining the photocatalytic efficiency of titania-based photocatalysts.

Abstract:The glancing angle deposition（ GLAD） method is a kind of physical vapor deposition and many kinds of self-standing nanostructured materials can be prepared. Here we report GLAD method to form selfstanding TiO 2 nanostructures on specific substrates,which makes photocatalysts easier to recycle. And smart designs of doping,decorating band gap matched materials can also make traditional photocatalysts take use of more visible light. In this review,we present some previous work fabricating nanostructured TiO 2 composites for enhanced photocatalytic performance by these methods.
