Abstract:We are pleased to bring to you the ACM TOSN Special Issue on “Low Power Wide Area Networks”. Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) are emerging as promising wireless technologies and networking paradigms for connecting billions of low-power Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Representative LPWAN technologies include but are not limited to LoRa, NB-IoT, and SigFox. With the rapid development of LPWAN technologies, an ever-increasing number of IoT devices are deployed and connected to enable a great variety of innovative applications such as smart metering in smart cities, machine-to-machine communication in connected factories, road traffic monitoring in smart transportation, and carbon emission tracking in green cities. We see practical challenges and great research opportunities in the development and application of LPWAN technologies. It remains highly challenging to network billions of IoT devices in a scalable, reliable, secure, and power-efficient manner. The special issue presents 13 articles, which were selected from a total number of 27 submissions, covering a broad range of topics including energy and networking efficiency, advanced MAC and PHY designs, LPWAN sensing, security, as well as surveys of recent advances in the research field. Several articles in this issue explore novel sensing and security paradigms for low-power IoT. The paper titled “LSAB: Enhancing Spatio-Temporal Efficiency of AoA Tracking Systems” by Pan et al. explores developing a novel sparse “planar array” to estimate angle of arrival, a key primitive for location tracking systems in the Internet of Things. The paper “Breaking Cellular IoT with Forged Data-Plane Signaling: Attacks and Countermeasure” by Tan et al. explores a new attack vector and potential defenses for cellular IoT platforms through forged messages in the data and control planes. Security is the key focus of the paper “LoRaWAN Security: An Evolvable Survey on Vulnerabilities, Attacks and their Systematic Mitigation” by Hessel et al., which explores the broad approaches developed for securing LoRaWAN IoT platforms. We have articles which investigated energy and network efficiency. The article “An EnergyAware Algorithm for Assignment of Relays in LP WAN” by Przemysław Głomb et al. proposes a novel relay node selection algorithm which selects relay nodes to forward data for other nodes with poor connectivity in LPWAN while maximizing the lifetime of the network. Yihang Song et al. present ChipNet which supports hundreds of long-range and concurrent connections between processor-free devices and a gateway in the article “ChipNet: Enabling Large-scale Backscatter Network with Processor-free Devices”. The article by Xiangmao Chang et al. titled “Measurement-based Optimization of Cell Selection in NB-IoT Networks” examines the cell selection process in NB-IoT and optimizes the cell selection algorithm to reduce the power consumption for user equipment.
