Abstract:AIDS is estimated to be responsible for 25 million deaths since 1981 when it was first recognised. The relentless toll on human life has continued in 2005 with 3.1 million deaths, more than half a million of them in children, according to the latest report from Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS, http://www. unaids. org)[1]. The total number of HIV positive individuals worldwide has now reached 40.3 million, with nearly 5 million newly diagnosed in 2005. Increases in HIV prevalence have occurred in each major world region except the Caribbean, where prevalence has remained stable at 1.6%. Sub-Saharan Africa is the worst affected with 25.8 million HIV positive people, representing two thirds of all cases worldwide, and 77% of all women with HIV.
