Abstract:We prove that the only self-similar surfaces of Euclidean 3-space which are foliated by circles are the self-similar surfaces of revolution discovered by S. Angenent and that the only ruled, self-similar surfaces are the cylinders over planar self-similar curves.

Abstract:In this paper, we use Aleksandrov's reflection principle to prove symmetry of solutions to F(∇Sn2u+uI)=f(u,u2+|∇Snu|2), where u is the support function of a convex body, and F is a function of principal radii. As a corollary, alongside [Ivaki, arXiv:2307.06252], we provide an alternative proof of the uniqueness of solution to the isotropic Gaussian-Minkowski problem.

Abstract:We classify the singular loci of real surfaces in three-space that contain two circles through each point. We characterize how a circle in such a surface meets this loci as it moves in its pencil and as such provide insight into the topology of the surface.

Abstract:In this paper, we find three nontrivial characterizations of Euclidean spheres. In the first result, we show that the existence of a nonzero nontrivial concircular vector field $ {\omega } $ on a compact and connected hypersurface $ N $ of the Euclidean space $ R^{m+1} $ with a mean curvature $ \alpha $ constant along the integral curves of $ {\omega } $ and a shape operator $ T $ satisfying $ T({\omega) = \alpha \omega } $ implies that $ \alpha $ is a constant and $ N $ is isometric to a sphere, and the converse also holds. In the second result, we show that the presence of a unit Killing vector field $ \mathbf{v} $ on a compact and connected hypersurface $ N $ of a Euclidean space $ R^{m+1} $ gives a nonzero function $ \sigma = g\left(T \mathbf{v}, \mathbf{v}\right) $ with shape operator $ T $, and the integral of the function $ m\alpha \sigma Ric\left(\mathbf{v}, \mathbf{v}\right) $ has a certain lower bound, and is isometric to an odd-dimensional sphere, and the converse holds too. Finally, we show that for a compact and connected hypersurface $ N $ with support $ \rho $ and basic vector field $ \mathbf{u} $, the integral of the Ricci curvature $ Ric\left(\mathbf{u}, \mathbf{u}\right) $ has a specific lower bound and is necessarily isometric to a sphere, and the converse also holds.

Existence and uniqueness of periodic pseudospherical surfaces emanating from Cauchy problems

Abstract:We study implications and consequences of well-posed solutions of Cauchy problems of a Novikov equation describing pseudospherical surfaces. We show that if the co-frame of dual one-forms satisfies certain conditions for a given periodic initial datum, then there exists exactly two families of periodic one-forms satisfying the structural equations for a surface. Each pair then defines a metric of constant Gaussian curvature and a corresponding Levi-Civita connection form. We prove the existence of universal connection forms giving rise to second fundamental forms compatible with the metric. The main tool to prove our geometrical results is the Kato's semi-group approach, which is used to establish well-posedness of solutions of the Cauchy problem involved and ensure $C^1$ regularity for the first fundamental form and the Levi-Civita connection form.

Abstract:We prove existence and uniqueness of foliations by stable spheres with constant mean curvature for 3-manifolds which are asymptotic to anti-de Sitter–Schwarzschild metrics with positive mass. These metrics arise naturally as spacelike timeslices for solutions of the Einstein equation with a negative cosmological constant.

Abstract:We obtain a generic regularity result for stationary integral $n$-varifolds assumed to have only strongly isolated singularities inside $N$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds, without any restriction on the dimension ($n\geq 2$) and codimension. As a special case, we prove that for any $n\geq 2$ and any compact $(n+1)$-dimensional manifold $M$ the following holds: for a generic choice of the background metric $g$ all stationary integral $n$-varifolds in $(M,g)$ will either be entirely smooth or have at least one singular point that is not strongly isolated. In other words, for a generic metric only "more complicated" singularities may possibly persist. This implies, for instance, a generic finiteness result for the class of all closed minimal hypersurfaces of area at most $4\pi^2-\varepsilon$ (for any $\varepsilon>0$) in nearly round four-spheres: we can thus give precise answers, in the negative, to the questions of persistence of the Clifford football and of Hsiang's hyperspheres in nearly-round metrics. The aforementioned main regularity result is achieved as a consequence of the fine analysis of the Fredholm index of the Jacobi operator for such varifolds: we prove on the one hand an exact formula relating that number to the Morse indices of the conical links at the singular points, while on the other hand we show that such an index is non-negative for all such varifolds if the ambient metric is generic.

Non-degenerate anisocurved surfaces in homogeneous 3-manifolds

Abstract:In this manuscript we consider non-degenerate surfaces $\Sigma^2$ immersed in a 3-dimensional homogeneous space $\mathbb{L}^3(\kappa,\tau)$ endowed with two different metrics, the one induced by the Riemannian metric of $\mathbb{E}^3(\kappa,\tau)$ and the non-degenerate metric inherited by the Lorentzian one of $\mathbb{L}^3(\kappa,\tau)$. Therefore, we have two different geometries on $\Sigma^2$ and we can compare them. In particular, we can consider the Gaussian curvature functions which respect to both metrics and study the geometry of the surfaces satisfying that both Gaussian curvature functions are opposite. We will call these surfaces anisocurved surfaces. In order to obtain our main results we also need to impose some extra assumptions regarding the extrinsic curvatures with respect to both metrics.

Abstract:We find and classify self-similar solutions of the curve shortening flow in standard hyperbolic 2-space. Together with earlier work of Halldórsson on curve shortening flow in the plane and Santos dos Reis and Tenenblat in the 2-sphere, this completes the classification of self-similar curve shortening flows in the constant curvature model spaces in 2-dimensions.

Abstract:This paper studies the self-similar singularity phenomenon of zero mean curvature equation including Born-Infeld equation, space-like surfaces with vanishing mean curvature equation and membrane equation which arises in string theory and geometric minimal surfaces theory. We show that there exist new explicit self-similar solutions for Born-Infeld equation, space-like surfaces with vanishing mean curvature equation and membrane equation in Minkowski space $R^{1+3}$ with respect to the radially symmetric case.

Abstract:In this paper we solve the Plateau problem for spacelike surfaces with constant mean curvature in Lorentz-Minkowski three-space $ł^3$ and spanning two circular (axially symmetric) contours in parallel planes. We prove that rotational symmetric surfaces are the only compact spacelike surfaces in $ł^3$ of constant mean curvature bounded by two concentric circles in parallel planes. As conclusion, we characterize spacelike surfaces of revolution with constant mean curvature as the only that either i) are the solutions of the exterior Dirichlet problem for constant boundary data or ii) have an isolated conical-type singularity.

Abstract:Abstract In Euclidean space, we investigate surfaces whose mean curvature H satisfies the equation $$H=\alpha \langle N,{\mathbf {x}}\rangle +\lambda $$ H = α ⟨ N , x ⟩ + λ , where N is the Gauss map, $${\mathbf {x}}$$ x is the position vector, and $$\alpha $$ α and $$\lambda $$ λ are two constants. There surfaces generalize self-shrinkers and self-expanders of the mean curvature flow. We classify the ruled surfaces and the translation surfaces, proving that they are cylindrical surfaces.

Abstract:We investigate the problem of when big mapping class groups are generated by involutions. Restricting our attention to the class of self-similar surfaces, which are surfaces with self-similar ends space, as defined by Mann and Rafi, and with 0 or infinite genus, we show that, when the set of maximal ends is infinite, then the mapping class groups of these surfaces are generated by involutions, normally generated by a single involution, and uniformly perfect. In fact, we derive this statement as a corollary of the corresponding statement for the homeomorphism groups of these surfaces. On the other hand, among self-similar surfaces with one maximal end, we produce infinitely many examples in which their big mapping class groups are neither perfect nor generated by torsion elements. These groups also do not have the automatic continuity property.

Abstract:We study, using Mean Curvature Flow methods, 3+1 dimensional cosmologies with a positive cosmological constant, matter satisfying the dominant and the strong energy conditions, and with spatial slices that can be foliated by 2-dimensional surfaces that are the closed orbits of a symmetry group. If these surfaces have non-positive Euler characteristic (or in the case of 2-spheres, if the initial 2-spheres are large enough) and also if the initial spatial slice is expanding everywhere, then we prove that asymptotically the spacetime becomes physically indistinguishable from de Sitter space on arbitrarily large regions of spacetime. This holds true notwithstanding the presence of initial arbitrarily-large density fluctuations.

Surfaces of section for geodesic flows of closed surfaces

Abstract:We prove several results concerning the existence of surfaces of section for the geodesic flows of closed orientable Riemannian surfaces. The surfaces of section $\Sigma$ that we construct are either Birkhoff sections, meaning that they intersect every sufficiently long orbit segment of the geodesic flow, or at least they have some hyperbolic components in $\partial\Sigma$ as limit sets of the orbits of the geodesic flow that do not return to $\Sigma$. In order to prove these theorems, we provide a study of configurations of simple closed geodesics of closed orientable Riemannian surfaces, which may have independent interest. Our arguments are based on the curve shortening flow.

Abstract:Generalizing the notion of domains of dependence in the Minkowski space, we define and study regular domains in the affine space with respect to a proper convex cone. In dimension three, we show that every proper regular domain is uniquely foliated by a particular kind of surfaces with constant affine Gaussian curvature. The result is based on the analysis of a Monge-Amp\`ere equation with extended-real-valued lower semicontinuous boundary condition.

Abstract:By establishing some differential geometry theory on the 1-lightlike surfaces, we show several geometric properties of the 1-lightlike surfaces which are completely different from non-lightlike surfaces. Based on these theories, we consider the singularities of the 1-lightlike surfaces in semi- Euclidean 4-space with index two as an application of the theory of Legendrian singularities. We characterize the singularities of the 1-lightlike focal hypersurfaces and describe the contacts between the 1-lightlike surface and the anti de Sitter 3-sphere at singular points by employing Montaldi's theory. In addition, we also discuss the detailed differential geometric properties of the 1-lightlike focal hypersurfaces in semi-Euclidean 4-space with index 2. Constant sectional curvature surfaces with a semi-symmetric non-metric connection

Abstract:Consider the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^3$ endowed with a canonical semi-symmetric non-metric connection determined by a vector field $\mathsf{C}\in\mathfrak{X}(\mathbb{R}^3)$. We study surfaces when the sectional curvature with respect to this connection is constant. In case that the surface is cylindrical, we obtain full classification when the rulings are orthogonal or parallel to $\mathsf{C}$. If the surface is rotational, we prove that the rotation axis is parallel to $\mathsf{C}$ and we classify all conical rotational surfaces with constant sectional curvature. Finally, for the particular case $\frac12$ of the sectional curvature, the existence of rotational surfaces orthogonally intersecting the rotation axis is also obtained.
