Thinking upstream: greater investment in community based mental health support is essential

Abstract:We strongly agree with Hartley that we urgently need to tackle the "mental healthcare deficit" in England.1 Hartley highlights a need for greater investment in the broader ecosystem of mental health support for people throughout life, including services that focus on wider determinants and are oriented towards prevention and early intervention.The provision of accessible, high quality community based mental health support is essential. Such support sits outside specialist secondary care based mental health services, which often have high access thresholds and long waiting lists. Community based support ranges from informal community networks, self-help, and peer support through to digital and face-to-face professional services. Services might be funded, commissioned, and delivered by a range of stakeholders across local authorities, the NHS, charities, and social enterprises.Strengthening the community based offering is crucial to tackling the full spectrum of mental health and wellbeing needs of communities, including the upstream determinants.
