Abstract:Bismuth-based metal-organic frameworks (Bi-MOFs) and their derivatives are a class of emerging promising coordination polymers with intriguing properties and functions. However, this specific type of MOFs is still in its infancy stage, which is limited by the flexible coordination environment and low solubility of Bi(III) cation. Herein, this review aims at providing a comprehensive overview of the latest advances in Bi-MOFs and their derivatives, focusing on the three aspects: synthesis, structure, applications. The solution chemistry for Bi(III) cation is discussed firstly. The diverse structure types of Bi-MOFs with different organic ligands are fully discussed and the formation of Bi-MOFs derivatives is highlighted in the following section. Then, the applications of Bi-MOFs and their derivatives are elaborated, including catalysis, energy storage, biomedical imaging, drug delivery, fluorescence sensing, adsorption and separation. Finally, referencing these studies, the insights and perspectives are suggested in terms of future research directions. With the context of recent pioneering studies on Bi-MOFs and their derivatives, we hope to stimulate some possibilities for further development in this field. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:<p>Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline porous materials in which metal ions or clusters are constructed in cooperation with organic linkers. MOFs have received tremendous attention in the fields of both inorganic and organic chemistry owing to their high porosity, large specific surface area, regular pore arrangement, and adjustable pore size. This article reviews a large number of preparation methods for MOF films, including liquid phase epitaxy, supersonic cold spraying, direct gas-phase preparation, and interface-assisted synthesis. Thereafter, we introduce applications of MOF films in the fields of optics, sensing, catalysis, adsorption, and separation, as well as their electrochemical energy storage. At the end of this review, we describe the challenges that need to be overcome and consider future perspectives for synthesis and applications.</p>

Abstract:Comprehensive Summary Iron‐based metal‐organic frameworks (Fe‐MOFs) have attracted extensive interest from researchers due to their tunability, favorable properties, and chemical versatility. Compared with conventional porous materials, Fe‐MOFs exhibit better performance in a wide variety of applications. Herein, the structures of Fe‐MOFs are summarized to explore potential structures based on isoreticular chemistry, as well as the recent research progress in their synthesis and multifunctional applications. The rapid development of Fe‐MOFs has broadened the application range of Fe‐MOFs, and a brief description of Fe‐MOF applications in gas storage and separation, catalysis, bioimaging, and magnetism is outlined, with the aim to expand the prospects of Fe‐MOFs in more practical applications. Abstract:<p>During the past few decades, metal–organic materials (MOMs) including metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), metal–organic cages (MOCs) and metallacycles have captured widespread interests due to their wide applications in energy storage, catalysis, sensor, gas storage and separation, and biological relevant applications. Thus, exploring new MOMs, studying their physical and chemical properties and applications have become one of the most attractive and exciting areas of inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry and supramolecular chemistry. Among which, boron-based metal–organic materials (BMOMs), constructed from the boron-containing ligands, have attracted considerable attention because of the unique properties of boron atom, which arises from their unoccupied 2p orbital, endowing these materials with unique potentials in light-harvesting, catalysis, fluorescent sensing, biomedical, etc. In this Review, we summarize the recent research progress in BMOMs, including MOFs, MOCs and metallacycles with their synthesis, properties and potential applications.</p>

In this paper, the types of MOFs are classified, and the synthesis methods and functional modification mechanisms of MOFs materials are summarized. Finally, the application prospects and challenges of metal‐organic framework materials in the biomedical field are discussed, hoping to promote their application in multidisciplinary fields.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), also known as coordination polymers, have attracted extensive research interest in the past few decades due to their unique physical structures and potentially vast applications. In this review, we outline the recent progress in the synthesis, functionalization and applications of MOFs in biomedicine, mainly focusing on two promising, yet challenging areas, i.e., drug delivery and biosensing applications. A major challenge is the proper functionalization of MOFs with demanding properties suitable for biomedical applications. Extensive studies on MOFs in biomedicine have led to substantial progress in the control of key properties of MOFs such as toxicity, size and shape, and biological stability. Due to their flexible composition, pore size and easy functionalization properties, MOFs can be utilized as key components for the development of various functional systems, and their applications in drug delivery and biosensing are reviewed. Future trends and perspectives in these research areas are also outlined.

Abstract:Recently, Zr- and Ti-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have gathered increasing interest in the field of chemistry and materials science, not only for their ordered porous structure, large surface area, and high thermal and chemical stability, but also for their various potential applications. Particularly, the unique features of Zr- and Ti-based MOFs enable them to be a highly versatile platform for catalysis. Although much effort has been devoted to developing Zr- and Ti-based MOF materials, they still suffer from difficulties in targeted synthesis, especially for Ti-based MOFs. In this Feature Article, we discuss the evolution of Zr- and Ti-based MOFs, giving a brief overview of their synthesis and structures. Furthermore, the catalytic uses of Zr- and Ti-based MOF materials in the previous 3-5 years have been highlighted. Finally, perspectives on the Zr- and Ti-based MOF materials are also proposed. This work provides in-depth insight into the advances in Zr- and Ti-based MOFs and boosts their catalytic applications.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a type of inorganic-organic hybrids connected by organic ligands and discrete metal ions/metallic secondary building units (SBUs). Recently, more and more MOF examples based on infinite SBUs (ISBUs) including one-dimensional (1D) rods, two-dimensional (2D) sheets, and even three-dimensional (3D) nets have emerged and exhibited unique physical and chemical properties (e.g., excellent stability, strong light absorption, and fast charge carrier mobility). Hence, rapidly increasing endeavors have been devoted to the structure design, synthesis methodology, property exploration as well as performance evaluation of novel ISBU MOFs. In this timely review, we will first summarize the established synthesis methods and resolved crystallographic structures of various types of ISBU MOFs. At the same time, the distinct physical and chemical properties resulting from corresponding ISBUs deserve to be highlighted and compared with traditional MOFs consisting of discrete metal ions/SBUs. Moreover, recent progress of those ISBU MOFs achieved in fields of gas adsorption and separation, energy conversion, photocatalysis, etc. are also introduced. We hope it is constructive and attractive for further advancement achieved in this infancy but intriguing research field.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a kind of material which are able to integrate functional groups on their framework backbones. The tunable functionalities let MOFs be applied in various fields of luminescence, gas storage, sensing, magnetics, catalysis and biomedical imaging. Because of their interesting properties of structural robustness, catalysis, charge and energy transformations, using porphyrins and metalloporphyrins as synthons for the fabrication of functional MOFs has attracted considerable interest. Many efficient strategies have been established for the construction of functional porphyrinic MOFs, and some of them present interesting properties for potential applications. This perspective is aimed to summarize recent progress on porphyrinic MOFs, including new synthesis strategies and applications.

Abstract:Three Cd(II)-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), namely, [Cd(HL 1)(4,4′-bipb)]n (1), [Cd2(L 2)(4,4′-bipb)2(H2O)3]n (2), {[Cd 2(L 3)(4,4′-bipb)(H2O)2]·(4,4′-bipb)0.5}n (3), where H3 L 1, H4 L 2, H4 L 3, and 4,4′-bipb are semi-rigid 2-(4-carboxyphenoxy) terephthalic acid, 3-(2,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)phthalic acid, 3,3′-(1,3- phenylenebis(oxy))diphthalic acid, and 1,4-bis(pyridin-4-yl)benzene, respectively, are synthesized in the presence of 4,4′-bipb and Cd(II) ions by hydrothermal method. 1 displays a 2,6-connected 3D topological structure. 2 features a 3D framework with 4,5,5-connected topology. 3 shows a 4,4,4-connected 3D topology. The fluorescence properties of 1–3 were determined in a dilute aqueous suspension at room temperature. The initial fluorescence intensity of 1 and 2 was almost completely quenched after the addition of Fe(NO3)3 solution. It is confirmed that after the addition of AgNO3 solution, the fluorescence intensity of 3 was quenched significantly, but the fluorescence intensity is increased after the Al(NO3)3 and Fe(NO3)3 solutions are added.

Abstract:This review focuses on the microstructure design of MOFs and their derivatives, including special morphologies such as core–shell, yolk–shell, multi‐shelled, sandwich structures, and unique crystal surface exposures. It reviews their applications in energy, catalysis, atmospheric water harvesting, seawater uranium extraction, and triboelectric nanogenerators, and finally, it looks forward to the challenges and opportunities in regulating the synthesis of MOFs. Metal–Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are a very promising material in the fields of energy and catalysis due to their rich active sites, tunable pore size, structural adaptability, and high specific surface area. The concepts of "carbon peak" and "carbon neutrality" have opened up huge development opportunities in the fields of energy storage, energy conversion, and catalysis, and have made significant progress and breakthroughs. In recent years, people have shown great interest in the development of MOFs materials and their applications in the above research fields. This review introduces the design strategies and latest progress of MOFs are included based on their structures such as core–shell, yolk–shell, multi‐shelled, sandwich structures, unique crystal surface exposures, and MOF‐derived nanomaterials in detail. This work comprehensively and systematically reviews the applications of MOF‐based materials in energy and catalysis and reviews the research progress of MOF materials for atmospheric water harvesting, seawater uranium extraction, and triboelectric nanogenerators. Finally, this review looks forward to the challenges and opportunities of controlling the synthesis of MOFs through low‐cost, improved conductivity, high‐temperature heat resistance, and integration with machine learning. This review provides useful references for promoting the application of MOFs‐based materials in the aforementioned fields.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a new class of crystalline porous hybrid materials with high porosity, large specific surface area and adjustable channel structure and biocompatibility, which are being investigated with increasing interest for energy storage and conversion, gas adsorption/separation, catalysis, sensing and biomedicine. However, the practical applications of MOFs make them release into the environment inevitable, posing a threat to humans and organisms. In this article, we cover advances in the currently available MOFs synthesis methods and the emerging applications of MOFs, especially in the biomedical field (therapeutic agents and bioimaging). Additionally, after evaluating the current status of main exposure routes and affecting factors in the field of MOFs-toxicity, the molecular mechanism is also clarified and identified. Knowledge gaps are identified from such a summarization and frontier development are explored for MOFs. Afterwards, we also present the limitations, challenges, and future perspectives in the study of the entire life cycle of MOFs. This review emphasizes the need for a more targeted discussion of the latest, widely used and effective versatile material class in order to exploit the full potential of high-performance and non-toxicity MOFs in the future.

Abstract:Since the early reports of MOFs and their interesting properties, research involving these materials has grown wide in scope and applications. Various synthetic approaches have ensued in view of obtaining materials with optimised properties, the extensive scope of application spanning from energy, gas sorption, catalysis biological applications has meant exponentially evolved over the years. The far‐reaching synthetic and PSM approaches and porosity control possibilities have continued to serve as a motivation for research on these materials. With respect to the biological applications, MOFs have shown promise as good candidates in applications involving drug delivery, BioMOFs, sensing, imaging amongst others. Despite being a while away from successful entry into the market, observed results in sensing, drug delivery, and imaging put these materials on the spot light as candidates poised to usher in a revolution in biology. In this regard, this review article focuses current approaches in synthesis, post functionalization and biological applications of these materials with particular attention on drug delivery, imaging, sensing and BioMOFs.

Abstract:Within the past few decades, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have attracted much attention due to their porous structure, periodicity, and tunability; however, the lack of good stability of MOFs limits its further application, while COFs are limited by the lack of metal active sites. Recently, a new kind of organic frameworks appeared, which used metal clusters of MOFs as secondary building units (SBUs) and synthesized covalent-metal–organic frameworks (C-MOFs) through the dynamic covalent bonding linkage of COFs. C-MOFs combine the advantages of both MOFs and COFs, and also possess the adjustable and predictable periodic porous structure, which has good stability at the and also the presence of metal active sites, which is a novel material. In this review, we provide an overview of the research advances in the synthesis strategies of C-MOFs, as well as the progress of their applications in catalysis, gas storage, and energy storage. In addition, the article ends with a look at the future direction of C-MOFs.

Abstract:The combination of the high surface areas, microporosity and tuneable compositions of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with the desirable photo-physical behaviour of semiconductor nanoparticles or quantum dots (QDs), allows the preparation of composite materials with enhanced properties for applications in photocatalysis, energy, gas-storage and sensing. These QD@MOF composites are an emergent class of materials and in this review we discuss current strategies for their synthesis, consider the semiconductor behaviour of MOFs themselves and present the applications of the various materials reported this far grouped by the nature of the QD component.

Abstract:A self-assembled Bi-MOF {[Bi(BDC)1.5(DMF)(H2O)]·DMF}n (Bi-BDC) (H2BDC = terephthalic acid, DMF = N, N-dimethylformamide) was designed and synthesized by the reaction of bismuth nitrate and H2BDC under solvothermal conditions. The basic structure of the complex was characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, UV–vis spectroscopy, PXRD, single crystal X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis. The structure analysis shows that the Bi-BDC has a three-dimensional supramolecular layered network structure by p - π interaction. In addition, the properties of the Bi-BDC on photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes were investigated. Surprisingly, it has superior degradation rate for both anionic and cationic dyes with a very short time by adding hydrogen peroxide. Furthermore, the kinetic analysis, degradation of mixed dyes, recycle experiments and catalytic mechanism were investigated. The results show that Bi-BDC has potential application value in photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes in future.
