Abstract:In this work, three types of nanosized magnesium oxide (MgO) modified tobermorite (TOB) were synthesized through a gelation-calcination method. The prepared adsorbents were applied to simultaneously remove N and P from the simulated and actual wastewater through struvite method. Characterizations of the adsorbents including XRD, XPS, FTIR, SEM-EDS, TEM, BET and sedimentation experiment were conducted and proved that MgO was successfully loaded on TOB. The influences of contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial solution pH and temperature on N and P removal were explored. The modified TOB exhibited excellent removal performance in a wide range of pH due to the ability to regulate pH spontaneously, and this ability was under better control after carbon template was introduced. With suitable adsorbent dosage, both TOB@MgO2 and TOB@MgO3 could remove over 80 % of N and nearly 100 % of P in 15 min and 4 h respectively. Additionally, the removal efficiency was slightly affected by temperature. The process of N and P removal could be better described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating it was mainly controlled by surface chemical reactions. TOB was not only used as the carrier for MgO loading but also could collaborate with MgO to remove N and P, especially for P removal. Besides the diversified chemisorption, physisorption also played a nonnegligible role in the removal. Finally, the pot experiment confirmed the feasibility of directly using the modified TOB after adsorption as a slow-release fertilizer.

Abstract:A laboratory study was conducted to investigate the use of Mg/Fe hydrotalcite-like compounds for the removal of nitrate from synthetic solution. A series of calcined hydrotalcites (CHTlcs) with different chemical composition were investigated to remove nitrate. The highest nitrate percentage of adsorption (about 95%) and adsorption capacity (about 70 mg/g) were obtained by using the CHTlcs with Mg/Fe molar ratio of 3. The adsorption experiments were carried out under various equilibration conditions, such as adsorbent dose, pH, temperature, and competitive ions. It was found that 1.5 g/L Mg/Fe CHTlcs could achieve ideal adsorption efficiencies of nitrate during the nitrate adsorption process with an initial nitrate concentration of 100 mg/L at pH 8 and at temperature 30°C. Various co-existing anions interfered in the adsorption of nitrate. The inhibitory effect was in the order of phosphate > sulfate > chloride. Adsorption isotherms showed that the experimental equilibrium data was fitted better by the Langmuir isotherm model than the Freundlich. The adsorption kinetics was successfully fitted by pseudo-second-order kinetics. And the characterization of the Mg/Fe CHTlcs was also analyzed to validate adsorption process. Results showed promising utility of Mg/Fe CHTlcs that could be developed into a viable technology for nitrate removal from water.

Abstract:Three types of alkyl-ammonium with different branching chains and three complexants with different functional groups were used to prepare alkyl-ammonium or complexant intercalated montmorillonite nanocomposite (A-Mt or C-Mt). In addition, synergistic intercalated montmorillonite nanocomposites (A/C-Mt) with alkyl-ammonium along with complexant were also prepared. The adsorption performance of the various nanocomposites toward Zn2+ and p-nitrophenol (PNP) from simulated binary wastewater containing both Zn2+ and PNP were systematically investigated. Characterization of Mt nanocomposites showed that both alkyl-ammoniums and complexants were successfully intercalated into the interlayers of Mt. The surfactant loading amounts of the various nanocomposites were also determined and correlated with the resulting expansion of the interlayer spacing. It was found that intercalation of alkane (OTAC) and –SH (CSH) were conducive to the adsorption of Zn2+ while –C2H4NH (TETA) and all alkyl-ammoniums were beneficial for PNP adsorption. The extent of adsorption was found to be controlled primarily by pH, i.e., the higher pH had a good effect on the adsorption of both Zn2+ and PNP. The adsorption process of Zn2+ onto Mt nanocomposites was more in line with the Freundlich model (R2 = 0.99), while the Langmuir model described the adsorption of PNP well (R2 = 0.99). The adsorption kinetics could be well described by the Elovich equation (R2 = 0.98) and the double-constant model (R2 = 0.89). Chemical adsorption was determined to be the dominant process between the contaminant and Mt nanocomposite surfaces.

Adsorption of Co2+ and Cr3+ in Industrial Wastewater by Magnesium Silicate Nanomaterials

Abstract:In this paper, two flower-like magnesium silicate nanomaterials were prepared. These and another two commercial magnesium silicate materials were characterized using a scanning electron microscope, the N2 adsorption–desorption method, and other methods. The structure–activity relationship between the adsorption performance of these four magnesium silicate materials and their specific surface area, pore size distribution, and pore structure was compared. The results showed that the 3-FMS modified by sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS) had the largest specific surface area and pore size, the best adsorption performance, and the largest experimental equilibrium adsorption capacity (qe,exp) for Co2+, reaching 190.01 mg/g, and Cr3+, reaching 208.89 mg/g. The adsorption behavior of the four materials for Co2+ and Cr3+ both fitted the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir adsorption model, indicating that chemical monolayer uniform adsorption was the dominant adsorption process. Among them, the theoretical adsorption capacity (qm) of 3-FMS was the highest, reaching 207.62 mg/g for Co2+ and 230.85 mg/g for Cr3+. Through further research, it was found that the four materials mainly removed Co2+ and Cr3+ through electrostatic adsorption, surface metal ions (Mg2+), and acidic groups (-OH and -SO3H) exchanging with ions in solution. The adsorption performance of two self-made flower-like magnesium silicate materials for Co2+ and Cr3+ was superior to that of two commercial magnesium silicates.

Abstract:Encapsulating free radical species with super-short lifetime and organic pollutants inside the chemical theoretical diffusion length scale by spatial confinement could offer a strategy with great promise to resolve the mass transfer restrictions in heterogeneous Fenton-like systems. Herein, we reported the spatial confinement of Co, N co-doped carbon (Co-N-C) catalyst in carbon nanocuboids (Co-CNCs), via encapsulation of Co-N-C catalyst into CNCs, for activating CaSO3 to efficiently degrade sulfamethoxazole. The detailed characterizations confirmed ZIF-9 was successfully transformed into N-doped carbon nanocuboids at 850 degrees C calcination. Co-N-C catalyst was successfully confined into carbon nanocuboids, is beneficial to prevent the aggregation of Co nanoparticles, thereby facilitating its stability and catalyst activity in sulfamethoxazole (SMX) removal via CaSO3 activation. Compared with other sulfites (including Na2SO3 and NaHSO3), CaSO3 (82%) presented much higher degradation efficiency than those of NaSO3 (18%) and NaHSO3 (41%) in SMX removal, emphasizing the critical role of CaSO3 in water decontamination. Because CaSO3 could discharge SO32- persistently and slowly, preventing from the consumption of the formed SO4 center dot- at a high concentration of aqueous SO32-. Quenching test and mechanism study had verified that center dot OH and SO4 center dot- (SO3 center dot-) were the major reactive species in Co-CNC-850/CaSO3 system. In addition, Zebrafish toxicology assays and seed germination experiments had revealed the biotoxicity of SMX to zebrafish and wheat seeds was significantly reduced after degradation via Co-CNC-850/CaSO3 system.

Abstract:The design of N-doped carbon-based nanomaterials for efficient heterogeneous activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for environmental remediation has piqued the attention of many researchers. In this study, precise temperature control vaporized Zn to form defects, and N-doped porous carbon-encapsulated Co nanoparticles were successfully generated by pyrolyzing the zeolite imidazolium framework (Co-ZIF-8(CZ)) @ anionic polyacrylamide (APAM) network composite ( (CZA)). Benefiting from the defect structure and enhanced N content doped Co particles, the obtained nanomaterials exhibited excellent effect and stability on tetracycline hydrochloride (TC• HCl) breakdown by activated PMS. The separation efficiency of TC• HCl in the CZA-1000/PMS system was 99.8% within 30 min and was 2.43 times more than pure Co-ZIF-8/PMS. In addition, the study investigated potential factors including pH, the coexistence of anions/cations/halide ions, TC• HCl, Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride (CPFX• HCl), and TC• HCl removal from natural water. CZA-1000/PMS system kept excellent performance. Through EPR, Raman spectroscopy, and XPS, the mechanism exploration revealed that the N-doped carbon modified with Co nanoparticles generated the oxygen defects and promoted the catalytic activity and stability. The radical and nonradical oxidation co-acted on TC• HCl degradation.

Abstract:In this work, magnetic porous carbon material doped with cobalt and nitrogen () was obtained by pyrolysis of Various characterization techniques were used to investigate the material properties and cobalt was found to exist as Co 0 , Co 2+ , and Co 3+ . The efficiency of catalytic activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for tetracycline (TC) degradation was investigated and 91.27 % of TC was degraded within 30 min using 0.2 g/L PMS and 0.04 g/L Furthermore, the effect of different factors on TC removal from the /PMS system was examined and it was found that maintained good catalytic activity and decent anti-interference ability. Additionally, the free radical quenching, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) tests revealed that activates PMS mainly through radical pathways (sulfate radical, hydroxyl radical and superoxide radical) and non-radical pathways (singlet oxygen、electron transfer), of which the latter is dominant. An examination of the stability of the material revealed that cobalt leaching (0.308 mg/L) was below the national China Emission standard. Possible TC degradation pathways were also proposed. Biotoxicity of major intermediates and end products was significantly reduced compared to TC. Overall, this study provides a novel approach for the preparation of non-uniform cobalt-based catalysts with high efficiency and low cobalt leaching for the activation of PMS.

Abstract:Coexisting ammonium (NH4+-N) and phosphate (PO43--P) in wastewater is one of the main causes of eutrophication, which poses severe risks to aquatic ecosystem and human health worldwide. Herein, magnesium-rich tricalcium aluminate (Mg/C3A), which was constructed by incorporating Mg into cement-based material C3A via solid-state reaction, was employed in the simultaneous removal of NH4+-N and PO43--P. Considering the wastewater with unbalanced N/P ratio and fluctuant pH, the effect of multiple factors (Mg/C3A dosage, pH, initial contaminant concentration, and temperature) on the removal of both ions were systematically investigated by employing response surface methodology technique. The results demonstrated that the impact order of the factors on the NH4+ removal by Mg/C3A was: temperature > Mg/C3A dosage > initial NH4+ concentration > pH > initial PO43− concentration; the impact order on the PO43− removal was: initial PO43− concentration > Mg/C3A dosage > temperature > pH > initial NH4+ concentration. The maximum removal amount of NH4+ (54.13 mg g−1) and PO43− (56.47 mg g−1) were obtained at: Mg/C3A dosage = 3 g L−1, initial NH4+ concentration = 160 mg L−1, initial PO43− concentration = 160 mg L−1, temperature = 308 K, and pH = 7. In addition, the possible interactive influence mechanisms were elucidated in depth. Mg2+ played a major role in the PO43− removal by forming struvite (MgNH4PO4·6H2O) and newberyite (MgHPO4·3H2O). OH− released from Mg/C3A hydration mainly contributed to NH4+ removal. This work showed that Mg-rich C3A is a promising candidate for simultaneous removal of NH4+ and PO43−, shedding light on practical water remediation.

Abstract:Spatial confinement of organic pollutants and reactive oxygen species (e.g., SO4 center dot- and (OH)-O-center dot) with ultrashort lifetime inside the scale of chemical theoretical diffusion could provide a greatly promising strategy to overcome the limitation of mass transfer in the heterogeneous Fenton-like oxidation process. Herein, we first reported spatial confinement of cobalt nanoparticles in N-doped carbon nanorods (Co-NCNRs), by encapsulating Co nanoparticles into N-doped carbon nanorods, in activating CaSO3 for antibiotic degradation. Compared to Na2SO3 and NaHSO3, CaSO3 could slowly and persistently discharge SO32- due to its low solubility, thus avoiding the depletion of the generated SO3 center dot- and (OH)-O-center dot under the high concentration of sulfite ions. Fully physical characterizations confirmed that the 3D hydrogel was mostly transformed into the nanorod structure of Co-NCNRs at 550 degrees C. Co atoms were successfully nanoconfined into N-doped carbon nanorods, which contributes to mass transfer and prevents the agglomeration of Co nanoparticles, thus enhancing its catalytic activity and stability in activating CaSO3 for water decontamination. The catalytic performance, kinetic research, influences of inorganic anions, pH, and degradation mechanism of chlortetracycline degradation catalyzed by the Co-NCNRs/CaSO3 system have been studied in detail. This work not only proposed a facile method for synthesis of nanoconfined catalyst but also provided an excellent Co-NCNRs/CaSO3 system for wastewater treatment.
Enhanced phosphate removal from aqueous environments using three-dimensional La-doped carboxylic carbon nanotubes/alginate: Performance and mechanisms

Abstract:The excessive amounts of phosphorus (P) discharged and usage have caused eutrophication and algal blooms, which seriously jeopardize the environment even the human health. In this study, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) served as carriers to develop a lanthanum-based sodium alginate hydrogel (La-CNT-COOH/SA) aimed at efficiently removing phosphate from wastewater. Characterization results confirmed successful deposition of La(OH)3 nanoparticles onto CNT-COOH. The optimal adsorption efficiency of La-CNT-COOH/SA hydrogels occurred at pH 4, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 54.4 mg/g under an initial phosphate concentration of 60 mg/L. Batch experiments demonstrated that La-CNT-COOH/SA performed well across a favorable pH range and exhibited high tolerance to common coexisting ions during phosphate adsorption. Adsorption isotherms indicated a dominance of both physical and chemical mechanisms in phosphate removal by La-CNT-COOH/SA. At elevated phosphate concentrations, the adsorption process followed quasi-second-order kinetics, primarily driven by chemical adsorption. Multi-instrument characterization emphasized that the substantial loading of La(OH)3 on CNT-COOH significantly contributed to adsorption, alongside crosslinked lanthanum ions on sodium alginate and abundant hydroxyl groups. Mechanisms of adsorption by La-CNT-COOH/SA encompassed electrostatic interactions, surface precipitation, and in-sphere complexation (La-O-P). These findings on fabrication, properties, and adsorption mechanisms of the phosphate-removal hydrogel lay a theoretical foundation for applying biomass-based materials in large-scale remediation practices.
Fe/N co-doped magnetic porous hydrochar for chromium(VI) removal in water: Adsorption performance and mechanism investigation

Abstract:Four kinds of Fe/N co-doped porous hydrochar were prepared by one/two-step N-doping schemes using microwave/traditional pyrolysis methods for removing Cr(VI) from aqueous phase. Heterocyclic-N was introduced through CO(NH2)2-based hydrothermal carbonization process, which could adjust the electronic structure of the hydrochar framework. Furthermore, Fe0 and Fe3O4 were embedded into hydrochar via carbothermal reduction reaction using FeCl3 as the precursor, which improved the reducibility and magnetism of the material. The modified hydrochar exhibited pH-dependency and rapid kinetic equilibrium, and the maximal adsorption amount of magnetic porous hydrochar obtained by microwave-assisted one-step N-doping (MP1HCMW) reached 274.34 mg/g. Meanwhile, the modified hydrochar had a high tolerance to multiple co-existing ions and the removal efficiency maintained above 73.91 % during five regeneration cycles. Additionally, MP1HCMW efficiently removed Cr(VI) via pore filling, electrostatic attraction, ion exchange, reduction, complexation, and precipitation. Summarily, Fe/N co-doped porous hydrochar was a feasible adsorbent with outstanding remediation potential for Cr(VI)-contaminated water.

Rapid adsorption of triclosan and p-chloro-m-xylenol by nitrogen-doped magnetic porous carbon

Abstract:Contamination of water resources with organic substances like phenolic fungicides is undesirable due to the improvement of living standards, the huge production of chemicals, the heavy consumption of daily chemical products, and the growth of the population. In this study, Co-based zeolitic imidazole framework-67 (ZIF-67(Co)) was synthesized using the "one-pot method," and the best Co-based N-doped magnetic porous carbon (Co-NPC) was prepared by ZIF-67(Co) carbonization in an atmosphere of N2. The materials were tested using an X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), infrared spectroscopy (IR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), N2 adsorption-desorption, and magnetization analysis. These characterizations indicated that the Co-NPC was successfully prepared. With the original morphology of ZIF-67(Co) crystals, the Co-NPC also has good porosity, magnetic properties, and a large specific surface area. In water, Co-NPC-800 has a good adsorption capacity for triclosan (TCS) and p-chloro-m-xylenol (PCMX), which are kinds of aromatic fungicides. The adsorption of Co-NPC-800 on both reached equilibrium within 3 min, which is in accordance with the quasi-second-order kinetic model. At 298 K, the maximum adsorption capacity of Co-NPC-800 for TCS and PCMX was 163 and 39 mg·g-1, respectively. The adsorption of TCS and PCMX by Co-NPC-800 is a spontaneous endothermic process with reduced entropy. The combination of Co-NPC-800 and phenols come from multiple actions of electrostatic, π-π, and hydrogen bond effects. Moreover, Co-NPC-800 can be regenerated through simple washing and can be reused at least three times by a magnet. The Co-NPC-800 has good porosity, large specific surface area, comparable adsorption capacity, rapid adsorption time, so it could be broadly used in sewage treatments and other environmental fields.
Peroxymonosulfate activation of magnetic Co nanoparticles relative to an N-doped porous carbon under confinement: Boosting stability and performance

Abstract:The integration of metal nanoparticles into carbon materials has catch considerable attention. In this study, we have successfully fabricated the N-doped porous carbon encapsulated magnetic Co nanoparticles () through a two-step pyrosis of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-67). The obtained exhibited excellent stability in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) towards tetracycline (TC) degradation without obvious Co leaching and magnetically separable. The removal efficiency reached up to 90.1% within 3 min and 74.7% of total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency could be obtained in 30 min towards TC by /PMS system. Mechanism explorations revealed the encapsulated Co nanoparticles in the porous N-doped carbon promoted the catalytic activity and stability. The two-pathway mechanism study indicated that radical and non-radical oxidations acted together in TC degradation. Moreover, some potential factors, including PMS dosage, TC concentration, solution pH value, anion/organic matters and temperature were investigated. The /PMS system exhibited high efficiency in removal of various antibiotics (oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline and deoxytetracycline). Even in actual water bodies (tap water, river water and pharmaceutical wastewater), the /PMS system displayed excellent performance. This study proposed a design of metal nanoparticles under confinement for fabricating highly active catalysts towards PMS activation.

Abstract:The covalent triazine framework, CTF-1, served as host material for the in situ synthesis of Fe2O3 nanoparticles. The composite material consisted of 20 ± 2 m% iron, mainly in γ-Fe2O3 phase. The resulting γ-Fe2O3@CTF-1 was examined for the adsorption of AsIII, AsV and HgII from synthetic solutions and real surface-, ground- and wastewater. The material shows excellent removal efficiencies, independent from the presence of Ca2+, Mg2+ or natural organic matter and only limited dependency on the presence of phosphate ions. Its adsorption capacity towards arsenite (198.0 mg g-1), arsenate (102.3 mg g-1) and divalent mercury (165.8 mg g-1) belongs amongst the best-known adsorbents, including many other iron-based materials. Regeneration of the adsorbent can be achieved for use over multiple cycles without a decrease in performance by elution at 70 °C with 0.1 M NaOH, followed by a stirring step in a 5 m% H2O2 solution for As or 0.1 M thiourea and 0.001 M HCl for Hg. In highly contaminated water (100 μg L-1), the adsorbent polishes the water quality to well below the current WHO limits.

Abstract:Adsorption, as a simple and efficient water treatment technology, faces the problem that it can only transfer but not fully mineralize pollutants. Transition metal activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) exhibit high catalytic activity, but leakage of metal ions poses potential health risks to the environment. To solve these problems, we ingeniously designed a micro−nanoreactor structure with glutaraldehyde crosslinked chitosan as the backbone and encapsulated MOF−derived Co−Fe nitrogen−doped graphitic carbon as the activated PMS reaction center (Co−Fe/NC@GCS). Due to its remarkable adsorption capacity, high concentration sulfamethoxazole could be efficiently enriched through electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding, and a small amount of PMS could be rapidly attracted and activated. Meanwhile, the synergistic mechanism of adsorption−PMS activation was also analyzed, and the degradation pathway of sulfamethoxazole was expounded. This study aims to develop a new strategy for the removal of emerging organic pollutants in water with such a system with strong adsorption and catalytic capabilities.
Cobalt-Doped Carbon Nitride for Efficient Removal of Microcystis aeruginosa via Peroxymonosulfate Activation

Abstract:Heterogeneous persulfate activation is an advanced technology for treating harmful algae in drinking water sources, while it remains a significant hurdle in the efficient management of cyanobacterial blooms. In this study, super-dispersed cobalt-doped carbon nitride (2CoCN) was prepared to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for simultaneous Microcystis aeruginosa inhibition and microcystin (MC-LR) degradation. When the initial PMS and 2CoCN concentrations were 0.3 g/L and 0.4 g/L, respectively, the efficiency of algal cell removal reached 97% in 15 min, and the degradation of MC-LR reached 96%. Analyses by SEM, TEM, and EEM spectra revealed that the reaction led to changes in algal cell morphology, damage to the cell membrane and cell wall, and the diffusion of thylakoid membranes and liposomes. The activities of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase and catalase) and antioxidants (glutathione) in algal cells generally increased, and the content of malondialdehyde increased, indicating severe damage to the cell membrane. Radical capture experiments confirmed that singlet oxygen (1O2) was the key species destroying algal cells in the 2CoCN/PMS system. The 2CoCN/PMS system was effective in removing M. aeruginosa within a wide pH range (3–9), and 2CoCN had good reusability. Additionally, three degradation products of MC-LR were identified by LC–MS/MS analysis, and a possible mechanism for the inactivation of M. aeruginosa and the degradation of MC-LR was proposed. In conclusion, this study pioneered the 2CoCN/PMS system for inhibiting M. aeruginosa and degrading microcystin, aiming to advance water purification and algae removal technology.

Abstract:Organic dyes and heavy metals often coexist in industrial effluents, and their simultaneous removal is a grand challenge. Herein, a hydrochar and MgAl layered double hydroxide (HC–MgAlLDH) nanocomposite was prepared via a facile one-step hydrothermal route, and applied to remove anionic Congo red (CR), cationic Methylene blue (MB) and Pb(II) from aqueous solutions. The nanocomposite was formed by interweaving amorphous HC and crystalline MgAlLDH nanoplates and possessed more functional groups, lower zeta potential and larger specific surface area than uncomposited MgAlLDH. Batch removal experiments showed that the components HC and LDH dominated the CR and MB removals, respectively, whereas Pb(II) removal was conjointly controlled by the two components. The maximum Langmuir removal capacities of the nanocomposite to sole CR, MB, or Pb(II) were 348.78, 256.54 or 33.55 mg/g. In binary and ternary systems, the removal capacities of CR and MB only slightly decreased, while the capacity of Pb(II) increased by 41.13–88.61%. The increase was related to the coordination of Pb(II) with the sulfur-containing groups in dyes and the precipitation of PbSO4. Therefore, the simultaneous removal of CR, MB and Pb(II) was involved in a synergistic effect, including electrostatic adsorption, π–π interaction, coordination and precipitation. The present work shows that the HC–MgAlLDH nanocomposite has great potential for wastewater integrative treatment.

Abstract:Cobalt–nitrogen co-doped carbon nanotubes (Co3@NCNT-800) were synthesized via a facile and economical approach to investigate the efficient degradation of organic pollutants in aqueous environments. This material demonstrated high catalytic efficiency in the degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ) in the presence of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The experimental data revealed that at a neutral pH of 7 and an initial CBZ concentration of 20 mg/L, the application of Co3@NCNT-800 at 0.2 g/L facilitated a degradation rate of 64.7% within 60 min. Mechanistic investigations indicated that the presence of pyridinic nitrogen and cobalt species enhanced the generation of reactive oxygen species. Radical scavenging assays and electron spin resonance spectroscopy confirmed that radical and nonradical pathways contributed to CBZ degradation, with the nonradical mechanism being predominant. This research presents the development of a novel PMS catalyst, synthesized through an efficient and stable method, which provides a cost-effective solution for the remediation of organic contaminants in water.

Abstract:Recently, peroxymonosulfate-based advanced oxidation process has been widely applied in the removal of refractory organic pollutants. In the present study, cobalt-doped graphene aerogel (Co-GA) composites have been fabricated as a promising activator for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) via in-situ synthesis successfully. The physical-chemical properties of composite catalysts were carefully characterized and the activation performance was evaluated by the degradation of sulfamonomethoxine (SMM), ciprofloxacin (CIP), sulfanilamide (SN) and rhodamine B (RhB) aqueous solution, respectively. The results showed that Co-GA could effectively degrade refractory organics and keep macroscopic morphology intact under the reaction conditions of 15 mg/L simulated wastewater, 0.3 g/L PMS, 0.2 g/L Co-GA. Furthermore, the effect of reaction parameters on SMM degradation was investigated. Co-GA/PMS system exhibited consistent performance over a wide pH range (3-11). The degradation mechanism of SMM is free radical oxidation dominated by sulfate radical (SO4•−) combined with non-radical reaction initiated by GA. Benefiting from its flexibility and recyclability, the as-prepared Co-GA is suitable for practical wastewater purification.

Abstract:Membrane-based nanoconfinement catalysis combined with advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and membrane filtration can efficiently and rapidly remove organic pollutants. Herein, cobalt-ferrite-doped graphitic carbon nitride (CoFe2O4@g-C3N4) nanoconfined catalytic membranes were fabricated to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for efficient water purification with the rapid degradation of pollutants. The catalytic membrane was highly efficient in degradation of various pollutants including pharmaceuticals, dye and phenol and achieved a 100% removal efficiency of the model pollutant ranitidine (5 mg/L) within a retention time of 54.6 ms. The CoFe2O4@g-C3N4 membrane/PMS system achieved a degradation first-order rate constant of 0.088 ms-1 (5280 min-1), which is 104106 times higher than traditional AOP systems. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and quenching experiments indicated that hydroxyl and singlet oxygen species were the main contributors to pollutant degradation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that charge was transferred from g-C3N4 (0.247 e) to CoFe2O4 and then from CoFe2O4 (1.611 e) to PMS (-1.858 e) in the CoFe2O4@g-C3N4/PMS system with its free energy of -5.64 eV, which indicated that the PMS dissociation on the CoFe2O4@g-C3N4 heterojunction was spontaneous. The ≡Fe(II)/≡Co(III) redox cycle and the promotion of heterojunction on electron transfer induced high stability (42 h) and efficient catalytic capacity for the CoFe2O4@g-C3N4 membrane/PMS system. The as-obtained CoFe2O4@g-C3N4 membrane expands a new pathway for membrane-based nanoconfinement catalysis and also provides a promising scheme for water treatment.
