Abstract:In the current study, AlSi10Mg strut-based lattice structures with BCC with Z strut (BCCz) topology were manufactured by powder bed fusion-laser beam (PBF-LB) and quasi-vacuum investment casting. The novelty of this study lies in the successful manufacturing of lattice structures with a diameter of 1 mm via investment casting and the direct comparison with those produced by PBF-LB. Also, the effect of stress-relieving post-processing (SR) treatment on the additively manufactured BCCz lattice structure was studied. Lattice structures with a more complex FCC and BCC with Z strut (FBCCz) topology were also manufactured by quasi-vacuum investment casting, and the effect of T6 post-processing was investigated. Quality control was conducted on the manufactured lattice structures, including dimensional control and penetrant testing. The microstructure, fracture mode, failure mechanism, and compressive mechanical properties were also evaluated. The results demonstrate that quasi-vacuum investment casting lattice structures have more precise geometric details and smoother surfaces than PBF-LB ones. The PBF-LB BCCz lattice structure has a higher compressive mechanical property than the AM-assisted quasi-vacuum investment casting-manufactured BCCz lattice structure. SR heat treatment decreased absolute and specific values of ultimate and yield strength in the PBF-LB BCCz lattice structure but enhanced plateau strength. Also, after applying T6 heat treatment on the investment-cast FBCCz lattice structure, the compressive mechanical property has increased. SR post-processing for the PBF-LB BCCz AlSi10Mg lattice structure changed the fracture and failure mechanism. Applying T6 to the FBCCz lattice structure alters the failure mechanism from shear bond formation to layer-by-layer, although it has no effect on the struts' brittle fracture behavior.
