Abstract:The catalytic dehydrogenation of methanol to give formaldehyde or formic acid, followed transfer hydrogenation and/or tandem (de)hydrogenation for the hydrogenation and C-methylation of carbonyls, offers advantages over traditional methods, including milder reaction conditions, improved safety, greater selectivity, and enhanced sustainability. This account provides a comprehensive overview of homogeneous catalysts reported for the transfer hydrogenation and C-methylation of various substrates, including ketones, chalcones, esters, and amides, using methanol as both a hydrogen donor and methylation source. Abstract:The chemical synthesis of organic molecules involves, at its very essence, the creation of carbon–carbon bonds. In this context, the aldol reaction is among the most important synthetic methods, and a wide variety of catalytic and stereoselective versions have been reported. However, aldolizations yielding tertiary aldols, which result from the reaction of an enolate with a ketone, are challenging and only a few catalytic asymmetric Mukaiyama aldol reactions with ketones as electrophiles have been described. These methods typically require relatively high catalyst loadings, deliver substandard enantioselectivity or need special reagents or additives. We now report extremely potent catalysts that readily enable the reaction of silyl ketene acetals with a diverse set of ketones to furnish the corresponding tertiary aldol products in excellent yields and enantioselectivities. Parts per million (ppm) levels of catalyst loadings can be routinely used and provide fast and quantitative product formation in high enantiopurity. In situ spectroscopic studies and acidity measurements suggest a silylium ion based, asymmetric counteranion-directed Lewis acid catalysis mechanism.

Selective synthesis of such alcohols are highly challenging and witnessed the utilization of transition metal catalysts towards the desired cross-coupled product. Abstract:Asymmetric Borrowing Hydrogen (BH) catalysis is a versatile, one-step approach for synthesizing enantioenriched amines/carbonyl derivatives from biomass-derived oxidized hydrocarbons with water as the sole by-product. These valuable chiral moieties are ubiquitous in natural products, fragrances, agrochemicals, and pharmaceuticals; hence, efficient methodologies that can directly form C–C and C–N bonds to diversify the synthetic utility are highly desired. Over the last decade, numerous contributions involving noble metals have been documented in this area, which largely relies on the choice of a suitable transition metal catalyst that facilitates a succession of oxidation/reduction steps. Only very recently, 3d metals were utilized for C–C and C–N bond formation in an asymmetric manner using the BH strategy. This article describes the current state-of-the-art for controlling the stereochemistry in the formation of a new stereogenic center via multiple catalysis, rational ligand design, etc. Several other strategies are outlined, such as asymmetric reductive functionalization, dynamic kinetic resolution, enantioconvergent processes, etc. New chiral catalysts based on 3d metals are anticipated to arise and find applications in the field of asymmetric borrowing hydrogen catalysis.

Abstract:Despite the advancements enabled by organometallic complexes in organic synthesis, which have led to innovative transformations and tackled issues related to waste and atom economy, concerns have arisen regarding the expense of noble metals and ligands. Expanding on previous work, iron and ruthenium complexes with cyclopentadienone ligands, akin to Knölker catalysts, have demonstrated remarkable efficiency in bond reduction and alkylations using alcohols as pro-electrophiles. This review delves into novel alkylation methodologies involving hydrazides or ketones, inventive dehydrogenative coupling reactions yielding highly functionalized structures, and the optimization of metal-catalysed reactions through organometallic complex modifications. Metal-catalysed hydrogen auto-transfer, or hydrogen borrowing, offers a sustainable approach to forming C-C or C-N bonds from eco-friendly alcohols. While transitioning the diaminocyclopentadienone tricarbonyl ligand to first-row transition metals under mild conditions remains challenging, recent findings indicate that blue-light irradiation at room temperature can facilitate this transformation without external photosensitizers. Thus, while conventional studies without light remain demanding, light's additional role can enhance this research domain, where such catalysts may play a pivotal role. Moreover, further exploration of asymmetric catalysis is warranted. This review aims to impact not only the community working with Knölker derivative catalysts but also organic chemists for potential applications and inorganic chemists for catalyst development, ultimately striving to generate catalysts for asymmetric syntheses. Additionally, its sustainability makes it relevant for chemists dedicated to green chemistry.

Abstract:We report the catalytic transfer hydrogenation of urea derivatives using green hydrogen from methanol, which is the most ambitious effort in this hydrogenation world. On enlarging this methodology, selective N-methylated amines achieved from urea which are widely featured in drugs, natural products, paints etc. Moreover, this methodology making a sustain-able alternative pathway for the synthesis of selective methylated derivative from CO2 derived compound. The key to the success of this transformation is the use of a commercially available Pd/C heterogenous catalyst and Methanol which act as both H2 and C1 sources. In addition, several control experiments with the plausible intermediates were performed to analyze this novel pathway. This transformation proceeds in an environmentally friendly greener protocol and high at-om-economy.

Abstract:The development of sustainable and efficient C1 substitution methods is of central interest for organic synthesis and pharmaceuticals production, the methylation motifs bound to a carbon, nitrogen, or oxygen atom widely exist in natural products and top-selling drugs. In the past decades, a number of methods involving green and inexpensive methanol have already been disclosed to replace industrial hazardous and waste-generating C1 source. Among the various efforts, photochemical strategy is considered as a "renewable" alternative that shows great potential to selectively activate methanol to achieve a series of C1 substitutions at mild conditions, typically C/N-methylation, methoxylation, hydroxymethylation, and formylation. Herein the recent advances in selective transformation of methanol to various C1 functional groups via well-designed photochemical systems involving different types of catalysts or not is systematically reviewed. Both the mechanism and corresponding photocatalytic system were discussed and classified on specific methanol activation models. Finally, the major challenges and perspectives are proposed.

Abstract:This review highlights the most recent reports in three powerful and ever-growing fields of borrowing hydrogen, acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling, and base-mediated hydride transfer strategies; which pave the way for generating reactive intermediates via shuttling hydrogen (or hydride) between starting materials without any need for an external hydrogen source to easily construct more complex structures. There is a thorough focus on diversifying the utility of alcohols for C/N-alkylation leading to the synthesis of branched ketones, alcohols, amines, indols, and 6-membered nitrogen-containing heterocycles such as pyridines and pyrimidines, various transformations with the focus on C-C and C-N bond-forming reactions via metal-based catalysis or metal-free approaches in this context to give a global overview in this area.

Abstract:Manganese (Mn) is a perfect candidate as catalyst in the sustainable organic transformations. It is the second most abundant metal in earth's crust, inexpensive, and non-toxic in the nature. We expect it to replace precious metals in the novel metal catalysis. Mn-catalysts and its pincer-type complexes with bidentate and tridentate ligands have shown explosive growth since 2016. Manganese complexes, oxides, and halides have displayed excellent catalytic activity in the organic transformations. Manganese catalysts have been used in C-C bond formation & C-H functionalisation, late-stage fluorination, hydrosilylation, hydrogenation of unsaturated C-O, and C-C bonds, and cross-coupling reactions with unique reactivity and selectivity. Even then, Mn catalysis has not got the same attention as other earth-abundant metals such as Fe and Co. This review highlights the recent advances and emerging opportunities of Mn-catalyzed organic transformation based on their intrinsic mechanistic advances and potentials, covering literature up to 2024.

Abstract:The development of efficient and sustainable chemical processes which use greener reagents and solvents, currently play an important role in current research. Methanol, a cheap and readily available resource from chemical industry, could be activated by transition metal catalysts. This review provides a systematic summary of strategies for methanol activation and the use in organic chemistry. Based on these strategies, many new synthetic methods have been developed for methanol utilization as the C1 building block in methylation, hydromethylation, aminomethylation, formylation reactions, as well as the syntheses of urea derivatives and heterocycles. The achievements, synthetic applications, limitations, some advanced approaches, and future perspectives of the methanol activation methodologies have been described in this review.

Driving electrochemical organic hydrogenations on metal catalysts by tailoring hydrogen surface coverages

Abstract:Electrochemical hydrogenation using renewable electricity holds promise as a sustainable approach to organic synthesis and the valorization of biomass-derived chemicals. Current strategies in the field usually employ alkaline conditions to suppress the competing hydrogen evolution reaction, and sourcing of hydrogen atoms for the hydrogenation is thus a challenge that can be addressed through local water dissociation on the electrode surface. Herein we demonstrate the computationally-guided design of electrochemical hydrogenation catalysts by tailoring their hydrogen coverage density and binding strength. Theoretical studies predict Cu, Au and Ag (with moderate H coverages) to be promising catalysts for electrochemical hydrogenation in alkaline media, which experiments confirm for a model organic substrate attaining yields and Faradaic efficiencies up to 90%. Furthermore, Cu, a non-precious metal electrocatalyst, is shown to promote the selective hydrogenation of a broad scope of unsaturated compounds featuring C=O, C=C, C≡C, and C≡N bonds with moderate to excellent conversions and chemoselectivities. Overall, this work demonstrates how the hydrogen coverage on the electrode surface can be tailored to design electrocatalysts based on non-precious metals for the hydrogenation of organic substrates. This knowledge is envisioned to guide the development of more efficient catalysts for organic hydrogenations as well as other chemical transformations of industrial interest.

Abstract:Comprehensive Summary Since the discovery of the hydroformylation (oxo‐synthesis or Roelen reaction) and the Reppe‐reaction, the transition metal‐catalyzed carbonylation reactions, providing versatile, facile, and even atom‐economic methods for the selective incorporation of C=O functionality to various skeletons, have gained tremendous importance in synthetic organic chemistry from laboratories to industrial applications. The carbonylation of carbon‐carbon multiple bonds, aromatic halides, triflates etc. in the presence of various nucleophiles has led the way to produce aldehydes, carboxylic acids, esters, amides, etc. in the fine chemical industry. However, these protocols usually proceed in conventional, fossil‐based, and usually toxic reaction environments. Thus, several attempts have been directed to develop efficient carbonylation methods in alternative, less harmful, non‐fossil‐based and even in renewable reaction media. In this review, we overview the recent applications of alternative solvents such as water, biomass‐based alcohols, γ‐valerolactone (GVL), 2‐methyltetrahydrofuran (2Me‐THF), ionic liquids (ILs), deep eutectic solvents (DES), and alkyl levulinates, limonene, α‐pinene, and dimethyl carbonate as well as fluorous media to improve efficiency, safety and environmentally benign nature of carbonylation protocols. Abstract:Efficient synthetic methods that avoid the extensive use of hazardous reagents and solvents, as well as harsh reaction conditions, have become paramount in the field of organic synthesis. Organocatalysis is notably one of the best tools in building chemical bonds between carbons and carbon-heteroatoms; however, most examples still employ toxic volatile organic solvents. Although a portfolio of greener solvents is now commercially available, only ethyl alcohol, ethyl acetate, 2-methyltetrahydrofuran, supercritical carbon dioxide, ethyl lactate, and diethyl carbonate have been explored with chiral organocatalysts. In this review, the application of these bio-based solvents in asymmetric organocatalytic methods reported in the last decade is discussed, highlighting the proposed mechanism pathway for the transformations.

Abstract:The conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2), an abundant renewable carbon reagent, into chemicals of academic and industrial interest is of imminent importance to create a higher degree of sustainability in chemical processing and production. Recent progress in this field is characterised by a plethora of organic molecules able to mediate the conversion of suitable substrates in the presence of CO2 into a variety of value-added commodities with advantageous features combining cost-effectiveness, metal-free transformations and general substrate activation profiles. In this review, the latest developments in the field of CO2 catalysis are discussed with a focus on organo-mediated conversions and their increasing importance in serving as practicable alternatives for metal-based processes. Also a critical assessment of the state-of-the-art methods is presented with attention to those features that need further development to increase the usefulness of organocatalysis in the production of organic molecules of potential commercial interest.

Abstract:Methanol, the simplest aliphatic molecule of the alcohol family, finds diverse range of applications as an industrial solvent, a precursor for producing other chemicals (e.g., dimethyl ether, acetic acid and formaldehyde), and a potential fuel. There are conventional chemical routes for methanol production such as, steam reforming of natural gas to form syngas, followed by catalytic conversion into methanol; direct catalytic oxidation of methane, or hydrogenation of carbon dioxide. However, these chemical routes are limited by the requirement for expensive catalysts and extreme process conditions, and plausible environmental implications. Alternatively, methanotrophic microorganisms are being explored as biological alternative for methanol production, under milder process conditions, bypassing the requirement for chemical catalysts, and without imposing any adverse environmental impact. Methanotrophs possess inherent metabolic pathways for methanol production via biological methane oxidation or carbon dioxide reduction, thus offering a surplus advantage pertaining to the sequestration of two major greenhouse gases. This review sheds light on the recent advances in methanotrophic methanol production including metabolic pathways, feedstocks, metabolic engineering, and bioprocess engineering approaches. Furthermore, various reactor configurations are discussed in view of the challenges associated with solubility and mass transfer limitations in methanotrophic gas fermentation systems.

Abstract:Methane and carbon dioxide are the main contributors to global warming, with the methane effect being 25 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. Although the sources of methane are diverse, it is a very volatile and explosive gas. One way to store the energy content of methane is through its conversion to methanol. Methanol is a liquid under ambient conditions, easy to transport, and, apart from its use as an energy source, it is a chemical platform that can serve as a starting material for the production of various higher-value products. Accordingly, the transformation of methane to methanol has been extensively studied in the literature, using traditional catalysts as different types of zeolites. However, in the last few years, a new generation of catalysts has emerged to carry out this transformation with higher conversion and selectivity, and more importantly, under mild temperature and pressure conditions. These new catalysts typically involve the use of a highly porous supporting material such as zeolite, or more recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and graphene, and metallic nanoparticles or a combination of different types of nanoparticles that are the core of the catalytic process. In this review, recent advances in the porous supports for nanoparticles used for methane oxidation to methanol under mild conditions are discussed.

Abstract:The utilization of fossil fuels has enabled an unprecedented era of prosperity and advancement of well-being for human society. However, the associated increase in anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions can negatively affect global temperatures and ocean acidity. Moreover, fossil fuels are a limited resource and their depletion will ultimately force one to seek alternative carbon sources to maintain a sustainable economy. Converting CO2 into value-added chemicals and fuels, using renewable energy, is one of the promising approaches in this regard. Major advances in energy-efficient CO2 conversion can potentially alleviate CO2 emissions, reduce the dependence on nonrenewable resources, and minimize the environmental impacts from the portions of fossil fuels displaced. Methanol (CH3OH) is an important chemical feedstock and can be used as a fuel for internal combustion engines and fuel cells, as well as a platform molecule for the production of chemicals and fuels. As one of the promising approaches, thermocatalytic CO2 hydrogenation to CH3OH via heterogeneous catalysis has attracted great attention in the past decades. Major progress has been made in the development of various catalysts including metals, metal oxides, and intermetallic compounds. In addition, efforts are also put forth to define catalyst structures in nanoscale by taking advantage of nanostructured materials, which enables the tuning of the catalyst composition and modulation of surface structures and potentially endows more promising catalytic performance in comparison to the bulk materials prepared by traditional methods. Despite these achievements, significant challenges still exist in developing robust catalysts with good catalytic performance and long-term stability. In this review, we will provide a comprehensive overview of the recent advances in this area, especially focusing on structure–activity relationship, as well as the importance of combining catalytic measurements, in situ characterization, and theoretical studies in understanding reaction mechanisms and identifying key descriptors for designing improved catalysts.
Homogeneous Catalysis in N‐formylation/N‐methylation Utilizing Carbon Dioxide as the C1 Source

Abstract:The growing emphasis on sustainable chemistry has driven research into utilizing carbon dioxide (CO2) as a nontoxic, abundant, and cost‐effective C1 building block. CO2 offers a promising avenue for direct conversion into valuable chemicals ranging from fuels to pharmaceuticals. This review focuses on the utilization of CO2 for reductive N‐formylation/N‐methylation reactions of various amines, providing advantages over conventional methods involving toxic CO and other methylating reagents. The approach employs readily available reductants such as silane, borane reagents, and hydrogen (H2). The discussion encompasses recent developments in transition metal and organocatalyst systems for these reactions, highlighting mechanistic interpretations and factors influencing product selectivity.
