Abstract:Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have attracted considerable attention as a cost effective alternative to the precious iridium- and ruthenium-based electrocatalysts for an oxygen evolution reaction (OER), a bottleneck of water electrolysis for sustainable hydrogen production. Despite their excellent OER performance, the structural and electronic properties of LDHs, particularly during the OER process, remain to be poorly understood. In this study, a series of LDH catalysts is investigated through in situ X-ray absorption fine structure analyses and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Our experimental results reveal that the LDH catalyst with equal amounts of Ni and Fe (NF-LDH) exhibits the highest OER activity and catalytic life span when compared with its counterparts having equal amounts of Ni and Co (NC-LDH) and Ni only (Ni-LDH). The NF-LDH shows a markedly enhanced OER kinetics compared to the NC-LDH and the Ni-LDH, as proven by the lower overpotentials of 180, 240, and 310 mV, respectively, and the Tafel slopes of 35.1, 43.4, and 62.7 mV dec(-1), respectively. The DFT calculations demonstrate that the lowest overpotential of the NF-LDH is associated with the active sites located at the edge planes of NF-LDH in contrast to those located at the basal planes of Ni-LDH and NC-LDH. The current study pinpoints the active sites on various LDHs and presents strategies for optimizing the OER performance of the LDH catalysts. Abstract:NiFe LDH (Layered Double Hydroxide) is a promising electrocatalyst for oxygen release reaction (OER), which is currently receiving more and more attention. Here, we propose a simple method to enhance the OER activity of NiFe LDH supported on Super P. The NiFe LDH@Super P catalyst with a nanoflower nanostructure was successfully synthesized via pre-hydrothermal treatment method, which ensures the normal nucleation process of the highly active NiFe LDH precursor and significantly promote the full contact of NiFe LDH and Super P in the three-dimensional space. The as synthesized NiFe LDH@Super P-2h sample exhibited excellent OER performances in alkaline media, and the overpotential is only 260 mV at a current density of 10 mA · cm-2. The outstanding OER electrocatalytic reaction performance is attributed to the unique three-dimensional nanoflower structure and excellent composite effect with Super P, which provides more specific surface areas and enables efficient transfer of electrons between them. This research work provides a simple and effective method for developing non-precious metal-based OER catalysts to replace expensive precious metal catalysts.
Engineering Nife Layered Double Hydroxide By Valence Control And Intermediate Stabilization Toward The Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) is one of the most promising candidates for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts. However, it is still challenging to design NiFe LDH with both high activity and good stability. Herein, NiFe LDH-Ni(iii)Li is synthesized by a facile approach through valence control of Ni ions and selective doping of Li. Ni(iii) ion percentage is significantly increased from less than 60% to 72.5% in the LDH thanks to the combined benefits of electrochemical oxidation, Mo-leaching and Li-doping. The catalytic activity of NiFe LDH-Ni(iii)Li is greatly promoted because the e(g) electron occupancy of Ni3+ approaches one, producing optimal bond strength with O. Moreover, density functional theory calculations reveal that Li-doping reduces the adsorption energy difference between *OOH and *OH from 3.16 eV to 2.79 eV by the stabilization of *OOH, decreasing the energy barrier of the rate-determining step by 0.29 eV. At the same time, higher covalency of Ni-O bonds results from the enlarged overlap between Ni 3d and O 2p orbitals, further enhancing the OER kinetics. Consequently, NiFe LDH-Ni(iii)Li exhibits excellent OER performance (overpotential of 248 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) on a flat current collector). This work provides a promising technique for engineering the electronic structure of LDH toward outstanding OER properties.

Abstract:Nickel/iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) represents a promising electrocatalyst for the challenging oxygen evolution reaction (OER), yet the precise role of iron (Fe) in enhancing its activity remains unclear. Herein, we conduct a comprehensive investigation aimed at unraveling the influence of Fe incorporation on the atomic environments and electronic structure of NiFe-LDH, with the ultimate goal of establishing a correlation between these factors and elucidating the mechanisms by which Fe amplifies the OER performance. Our findings reveal that Fe dopants induce weakening of the nickel (Ni)-oxygen (O) coordination, and then generate abundant oxygen vacancies (OV), which can mediate the electron transfer from Fe to Ni and finally result in electron localization at the Ni centers. The electron localization around Ni leads to the creation of a new energy level near the Fermi level and the formation of an electron-rich structure, resulting in a favorable electronic conductivity and reaction kinetics. The optimal NiFe-LDH sample exhibits an extraordinary electrocatalytic performance, requiring ultra-low overpotentials of only 189 and 248 mV to achieve current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm-2, respectively, in a 1.0 M KOH electrolyte. The comprehensive understanding obtained from this study can guide future design of high-performance NiFe-LDH-based electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Developing efficient and stable non-noble electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains challenging for practical applications. While nickel-iron layered double hydroxides (NiFe-LDH) are emerging as prominent candidates with promising OER activity, their catalytic performance is still restricted by the limited active sites, poor conductivity and durability. Herein, hierarchical nickel-iron-cobalt LDH nanosheets/carbon fibers (NiFeCo-LDH/CF) are synthesized through solvent-thermal treatment of ZIF-67/CF. Extended X-ray adsorption fine structure analyses reveal that the Co substitution can stabilize the Fe local coordination environment and facilitate the π-symmetry bonding orbital in NiFeCo-LDH/CF, thus modifying the electronic structures. Coupling with the structural advantages, including the largely exposed active surface sites and facilitated charge transfer pathway ensured by CF, the resultant NiFeCo-LDH/CF exhibits excellent OER activity with an overpotential of 249 mV at 10 mA cm-1 as well as robust stability over 20 h.

Abstract:NiFe layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have been denoted as benchmark non-noble-metal electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, for laminates of NiFe LDHs, the edge sites are active, but the basal plane is inert, leading to underutilization as catalysts for the OER. Herein, for the first time, light and electron-deficient Li ions are intercalated into the basal plane of NiFe LDHs. The results of theoretical calculations and experiments both showed that electrons would be transferred from near Ni2+ to the surroundings of Li+ , resulting in electron-deficient properties of the Ni sites, which would function as "electron-hungry" sites, to enhance surface adsorption of electron-rich oxygen-containing groups, which would enhance the effective activity for the OER. As demonstrated by the catalytic performance, the Li-NiFe LDH electrodes showed an ultralow overpotential of only 298 mV at 50 mA cm-2 , which was lower than that of 347 mV for initial NiFe LDHs and lower than that of 373 mV for RuO2 . Reasonable intercalation adjustment effectively activates laminated Ni2+ sites and constructs the electron-deficient structure to enhance its electrocatalytic activity, which sheds light on the functional treatment of catalytic materials.

Abstract:Currently, engineering non-precious NiFe layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) electrocatalysts with excellent oxygen evolution performances at high current densities is highly critical to promoting electrolytic water splitting producing hydrogen for large-scale commercial applications. Herein, an intrigued oxygen vacancy-rich Fe(Ⅱ)-incorporated NiFe-LDH containing electroactive high-valence ferritic species is successfully grown on Ni foam (Fe2+-NiFe-LDH-EO6 ) through an elaborate two-step route including hydrothermal and electrooxidation, and utilized as a high-efficiency elctrocayalyst of alkaline water oxidation possessing abundant exposed active sites, excellent intrinsic catalytic activity and superior durability. Therefore, the Fe2+-NiFe-LDH-EO6 electrocatalyst towards oxygen evolution reaction (OER) enables the low overpotentials of 239, 285 and 350 mV for the current densities of 10, 100 and 500 mA cm-2, respectively, a small Tafel slope of 48.3 mV dec-1, the low onset potential of 1.451 V, and retains the catalytic activity for 40 h at the large current density of 500 mA cm-2 as well as owns the high turnover frequency (TOF) value of 0.93 s-1 at the overpotential of 300 mV. This work provides a promising avenue to improve the OER performances of NiFe-LDH electrocatalyst for practical applications.

Abstract:Poor conductivity and low catalytic activity of NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) limit its application as an electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this work, heterostructure along with oxygen vacancy and amorphous structure, which is available to the enhancement of catalytic activity were introduced in the surface of NiFe-LDH by Co and W codoping using hydrothermal method. The overpotential of OER at 50 mA cm −2 is decreased from 304 mV of NiFe-LDH to 263 mV of W 0.5 Co 0.5 @NiFe-LDH. Moreover, the existence of W 6+ species in LDH can significantly improve the electrochemical kinetics of OER as well as the stability of catalyst. This work provides a new strategy to induce active sites in the surface as well as inhibit the formation of defects in the bulk so as to enhance the catalytic activity and still maintain the stability nature of catalysts.

Abstract:Layered double hydroxide (LDH) serves as an innovative catalyst for water electrolysis, showcasing outstanding performance in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) under alkaline conditions. However, it faces challenges due to its low electrical conductivity and limited accessibility to active sites. In this work, the flexibility advantages of disordered amorphous and ordered crystals in NiFe LDH were combined to improve OER performance and maintain long-term stability. This combination induces a variety of effects, including improving the intrinsic activity, changing the OER mechanism from adsorb evolution mechanism (AEM) to lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM), and promoting the reaction kinetics of the catalyst. Moreover, the porous structure of NiFe LDH can efficiently alleviate the issue of local acidic environment induced by prolonged OER reaction, satisfying the criteria for long-term stability. Therefore, the NiFe-2.0 LDH catalyst only requires an ultralow overpotential of 189 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 with Tafel slope of 43 mV dec-1. More importantly, the catalyst not only displays excellent electrocatalytic activity with an overpotential of 289 mV but also represents an outstanding stability over 80 h at an ultra-high current density of 1 A cm-2. This study provides a promising strategy for optimizing the catalytic activity and stability of catalyst at ampere current density, which is expected to achieve commercial applications.
Interfacial Interaction between FeOOH and Ni–Fe LDH to Modulate the Local Electronic Structure for Enhanced OER Electrocatalysis

Abstract:Toward the pursuit of high-performance Ni2+/Co2+/Fe3+-relevant oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts, the modulation of local electronic structure of the active metal sites provides the fundamental motif, which could be achieved either through direct modifications of local chemical environment or interfacial interaction with a second metal substrate which possesses high electronegativity (typically noble metal Au). Herein, we report that the local electronic structure of Ni–Fe layered double hydroxide (LDH) could be favorably modulated through strong interfacial interactions with FeOOH nanoparticles (NPs). The biphasic and multiscale composites FeOOH/LDH demonstrated an increasingly pronounced synergy effect for OER catalysis when the average size of FeOOH NPs decreases from 18.0 to 2.0 nm. Particularly, the composite with average size of FeOOH NPs of 2.0 nm exhibited an overpotential of 174 mV at 10 mA cm–2 and a tafel slope of 27 mV dec–1 in 1.0 M KOH, outmatching all the noble and non-noble OER catalysts reported so far; it also operates smoothly in various stability tests. A mechanistic study based on XANES and EXAFS analysis, d.c. voltammetry and large amplitude Fourier Transformed a.c. voltammetry proved the presence of high-oxidation-state Fe(3+δ)+sites with relatively short Fe(3+δ)+–O bond from the highly unsaturated ultrafine FeOOH NPs which could reform the local electronic structure and favorably manipulate the electronic oxidation and thus electrocatalytic behaviors of the Ni2+ species in the Ni–Fe LDH, hence leading to the easy formation, excellent OER activity, and extraordinary structural and catalytic stability. Our work puts an emphasis on the role of the solid–solid interfacial chemistry between a Ni–Fe LDH and a non-noble-metal component in engineering the local electronic structure of the active metal sites, which successfully pushed forward the catalytic activity of the well-studied Ni–Fe LDH far beyond its current limit in OER catalysis and opened up an avenue for rational design of OER electrocatalysts.

Abstract:A highly active electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is very important to reduce energy consumption in large-scale water-splitting. Herein, we prepared the NiFe layered-double-hydroxide (LDH) decorated with Fe-doped NiSe nanosheet on nickel foam ((Ni, Fe)Se@NiFe-LDH/NF) by a three-step method. The hierarchical (Ni, Fe)Se@NiFe-LDH/NF exhibit outstanding OER properties in an alkaline medium. The overpotential at 100 mA/cm(2) and Tafel slope of (Ni, Fe)Se@NiFe-LDH/NF is 253 mV and 47 mV/dec, respectively. The hierarchical (Ni, Fe)Se@NiFe-LDH/NF shows good long-term stability. The outstanding OER performance is attributed to the Fe doping, fast charge transfer and the synergistic interaction between (Ni, Fe)Se and NiFe-LDH. Abstract:Here we report a simple topochemical method to prepared Ni-Fe layered double hydroxide (LDH). Ni(II) Fe(II) hydroxide was prepared via coprecipitation of Ni2+ and Fe2+ by NH4HCO3 under anaerobic condition at room temperature. Ni-Fe LDH was obtained via oxidation intercalation by exposing the precipitate to air. The structure of LDH was characterized and the performance in electrochemical oxygen elution reaction (OER) was determined. Fe(II) residual was observed by XPS due to the incomplete oxidation, resulting in Fe replaced Ni site in LDH. It is found that LDH embedded with both Fe-O-Fe and Ni-O-Fe moieties is beneficial to OER in terms of low overpotential (240 mV at 10 mA cm-2), small Tafel slope (25 mV dec-1) and high electrochemical stability.

Abstract:Nickel‐iron based layered double hydroxides (NiFe LDH) have attracted tremendous research and industrial interests for oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysis (OER). However, methodologies on simultaneous regulation of performance‐influencing factors remain scarce and their real synergistic effects are not clear enough. Herein, we report a versatile polyoxometallic acids (POMs) etching approach to ingeniously reconstruct NiFe LDH, including three dimensional morphological nanotailoring, Fe3+ and α‐Ni(OH)2 active species reconfiguration, creation of multiple Ni, Fe and O vacancies and intercalation of POM polyanionic clusters. Our experimental and theoretical data collaboratively unveil that control of the key performance‐influencing factors and their multiple synergistic mechanism dominantly contribute to the step‐like OER performance enhancement. The reinforced electrocatalyst is further produced with low cost and high performance up to Ф180 mm in diameter, showing its feasibility and advancement of the promising configuration of NiFe LDH‐PMo12(+) ‖ Ni@NiFe LDH(‐) for alkaline anion exchange membrane (AEM)‐electrode‐stack cells. Furthermore, to mathematically evaluate the evolution, a novel empirical formula is proposed for quantitative identification of structure‐activity correlations, which offers an opportunity for first and fast reliability on materials screening.This article is protected by copyright. Enhancing the Performance of 2D Ni-Fe Layered Double Hydroxides by Cabbage-Inspired Carbon Conjunction for Oxygen Evolution Reactions

Abstract:Layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets as one type of two-dimensional materials have garnered increasing attention in the field of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in recent decades. To address the challenges associated with poor conductivity and limited electron and charge transfer capability in LDH materials, we have developed a straightforward one-pot synthesis method to successfully fabricate a composite material with a microstructure resembling cabbage, which encompasses NiFe-LDH and nanocarbon (referred as NiFe-LDH@C). Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) revealed that the monolayer NiFe-LDH with a height of ~0.5-0.8 nm is uniformly distributed and closely bonded to the carbon support, leading to a significant enhancement in conductivity and facilitating faster electron and charge transfer. Moreover, the NiFe-LDH@C exhibits a substantial number of surface defect sites, which enhances the interaction with oxygen species. This dual enhancement in charge transfer and oxygen species-mediated transfer greatly improves the catalytic OER performance, which is further corroborated by theoretical calculations. Notably, the Ni10Fe6-LDH@C with the highest concentration of surface oxygen vacancies demonstrated superior water oxidation performance, surpassing commercially available RuO2 catalysts; an OER overpotential of 231 mV@10 mA cm-2 with a Tafel slope of 71 mV dec-1 was achieved.
Stable and active NiFeW layered double hydroxide for enhanced electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction

Abstract:The electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) requires stable, highly active, and robust earth-abundant electrocatalysts. In the present study, we combine theoretical simulations with experimental approaches to design and synthesize NiFeW layered double hydroxide (LDH) for efficient OER in alkaline electrolytes. Density functional theory with the Hubbard U (DFT + U) calculations suggests that W, a high-valence metal, can improve the catalytic activity of Fe sites and optimize adsorption energies for OER intermediates at the surface of NiFeW LDH. Electrochemical measurements of the as-synthesized NiFeW LDH with a constant mass loading reveals that the LDH with the NiFeW molar ratio of 4:1:1 presented the highest intrinsic OER activity among all bi- and trimetallic LDH catalysts in this study. Furthermore, the nanostructures with the optimal active metal molar ratio are in situ grown on hydrophilic-treated carbon paper to fabricate an integrated 3D electrode with an overpotential of 248 mV at the catalytic current density of 20 mA cm−2 and a low Tafel slope of 68 mV dec−1 in 1.0 M KOH solution. This indicates that NiFeW LDH is among the most active NiFe-based OER electrocatalysts reported to date. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and elemental analysis confirm that the optimized Ni Fe W LDH presents a stable chemical composition and Ni, Fe, and W are still present in the catalyst after alkaline OER measurements. These findings offer new insights and avenues for the future design and study of stable and active multi-metal-based OER electrocatalysts.
