Abstract:The nonlinear effect of fiber limits the further increase in pulse energy, and Mamyshev oscillator shows outstanding advantages in managing nonlinearity in waveguide medium, which is now associated with high peak power and high pulse energy. The potential applications of these laser sources based on Mamyshev mechanism have facilitated aggressive research and innovative ideas by researchers around the world. Here, we focus on the mode-locked principle and starting dynamics of Mamyshev oscillator. The review of Mamyshev technology is summarized from two starting modes of seed source injection and self-starting. Initial research and significant progress in this field, plus new insights and challenges of Mamyshev oscillator for ultrafast fiber laser technology are analyzed.

Abstract:We have demonstrated a mode-locked Mamyshev oscillator based on a single-mode-fibre configuration with low threshold. The influences of spectral filters and the pump power on the output laser characteristics have been investigated. In the case with spectral-filter central wavelength far away from the peak of gain spectrum, the laser pulses have deviated slightly from similariton evolution with gain-shaping under high pump power. Moreover, self-starting mode-locking operation has been realized when the pump power was only 520 mW, which might benefit from the appropriate polarization conditions and small spectral filter separation. The laser can generate 1.89 nJ ultra-short pulses with 20 dB spectral width of 54.6 nm. The pulse duration can be compressed externally to 64.69 fs with the peak power of 21.3 kW.

Abstract:Real‐time spectral measurement of complex optical ultrafast processes in Mamyshev oscillators (MO) is an essential topic in the laser field. By adopting a special temperature‐sensitive band‐pass filter, the entire automated evolution of light pulses in the MO from start‐up to stable operation and extinction is observed continuously. The mirror symmetry of the start‐up and extinction process is fascinating. Mamyshev oscillators (MOs), which are based on an effective saturable absorber that arises from offset spectral filtering, are a new type of mode‐locked fiber lasers, but experimentally verifying the theory of the evolution of various dynamic characteristics of optical pulses in MOs has remained a major challenge due to the lack of appropriate filters and the means of real‐time, single‐shot experimental measurement. Here, the starting, extinction, and output dynamics of MOs are studied by designing and using a special temperature‐sensitive band‐pass filter, whose central wavelength can be continuously and accurately adjusted with temperature. The entire automated evolution of light pulses in the MO from start‐up to stable operation and then to extinction can be observed continuously by adjusting only the filter's temperature. What is more interesting is that the start‐up and the extinction processes are mirror symmetric, and both of them experience a double Q‐switching state. Further research has shown that the maximum filter interval corresponding to MO self‐starting is related to the pump power and that the bigger the pump power, the wider the filter interval. By gradually changing the interval between the two filters, the various output characteristics of the MO are also systematically studied.

Abstract:Mamyshev oscillators produce high-performance pulses, rely on its ultrahigh modulation depth. Just as the two sides of the coin, it also restricts the pulse self-starting and frequency increase. Here we present a Mamyshev oscillator with a key design feature that enable self-starting operation and high-order harmonic mode-locking from an all-fiber laser, based on two filters with fixed bandwidths. The laser generates 89th order that corresponding to the repetition rate of 395.2 MHz. The signal-to-noise ratio of each harmonic number exceeds 60 dB. This result perfectly balances the contradiction between the high modulation depth and the self-starting harmonic mode-locking in the Mamyshev oscillator, making it an attractive tool for practical applications in high repetition rate region.

Abstract:Here we present a numerical study of pulsing build-up dynamics inside the fiber Mamyshev Oscillator (MO). The main scope of the investigation is to describe the influence of the spectral separation between the filters on self-starting MO dynamics and transition from multipulse to single-pulse generation regimes. It was found that Floquet stability analysis provides a straightforward way to determine whether the system will be self-starting or if it has to be excited by external source and predicts the repetition rate of the pulse train. We showed that spectrally overlapped bandpass filters provide reliable multi-pulse generation due to Faraday instability. Adiabatic increase in the spectral separation between the filters decreases the number of pulses down to single-pulse regime, therefore providing a flexible way to generate adjustable number of mode-locked pulses on demand.

Abstract:As an emerging laser architecture, Mamyshev oscillators have great potential for high-average-power and large-pulse-energy ultrashort pulse generation and offer an excellent platform for exploring nonlinear dynamics arising from their high nonlinear phase accumulation ability. This study demonstrates various bound state solitons, including dual- and multi-pulse states, in a nonlinear enhanced Mamyshev laser in the 1 μm wavelength regime. Furthermore, harmonic mode-locking up to the seventh-order (∼116.88 MHz) with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) above 70 dB is achieved through intracavity nonlinear control, birefringence optimization, and careful gain management. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest SNR obtained in a harmonically mode-locked Mamyshev laser. The realization of diverse bound state solitons evolving into harmonic mode-locking provides valuable insight into the nonlinear dynamics of Mamyshev lasers and stimulates the discovery of new phenomena to advance fundamental science and laser technology.

Abstract:Bridging multi-mode fibers and Mamyshev regenerators holds promise for pulse energy scaling in fiber lasers. However, initialization of a multi-mode Mamyshev oscillator remains a practical challenge. Here we report self-starting spatiotemporal mode-locking (STML) in a multi-mode Mamyshev oscillator without active assistance. The first initialized mode-locking is unstable, but stable STML can be attained by increasing the filter separation. Simulations verify the capability of reaching self-starting STML using Mamyshev regenerators and unveil the effect of filter separation on the self-starting ability.

Abstract:Mamyshev oscillators and gain-managed nonlinear (GMN) amplifiers have the capability to generate high-power sub-50 fs pulses, but their close relationship has not been systematically investigated. In this paper, we numerically study the influence of gain-managed nonlinearity on the laser evolution and output characteristics of the Mamyshev oscillator. The impact of the gain fibre length, as well as the central wavelength and bandwidth of spectral filters on GMN evolution in the laser are investigated. The results indicate that optimizing these cavity parameters can lead to the GMN evolution, which can improve the output peak power by 1.5–4 times in Mamyshev oscillators.

Abstract:We demonstrate a simple method to start Yb fiber Mamyshev oscillator by adding a saturable absorber mirror (SAM) in an optical path at a bandpass filter reflection. At first, to achieve the starting of Mamyshev oscillator using SAM, by injecting a seed pulse from outside the cavity, an output coupling, a transmitted central wavelength between offset bandpass filters, and a pump LD power are explored to start the Mamyshev oscillator. Then, preserving the above-mentioned three parameters in the cavity, we exchange a fiber-cabled mounted SAM for the seed pulse output FC/APC connector. After that, the Mamyshev oscillator immediately started by turning on the pump LD. To understand the starting dynamics of this approach, we capture the pulse resolved spectrum in an initial stage of the pulse formation of Mamyshev oscillator by time-stretch spectroscopy. Before starting Mamyshev oscillator, a signature of the Q-switch pulse is observed in the 2D color plot imaging of the pulse-resolved single-shot spectrum. When a strong amplified spontaneous emission is input to SAM, a Q-switch pulse is created, and then this Q-switch pulse circulates in the cavity. This Q-switching pulse plays a role in the seed pulse to start the Mamyshev oscillating. We believe this simple approach is one of the efficient techniques for starting the Mamyshev oscillator.

Abstract:We present a numerical investigation of the bound-state pulse formation mechanism and evolutionary dynamics based on the pump strength and spectral filtering bandwidth in the all-fiber Mamyshev oscillator. Through the numerical simulation and analysis, the different mode-locked pulses' (such as single pulses, bound-state pulses, and chaotic multi-pulses) regime transformation conditions are quantified. The results suggest that with an increase in the pump strength, the sub-pulse energy and output coupler of the Mamyshev oscillator show an inverse proportion trend, which plays an important role in increasing the number of sub-pulses in the bound-state pulses' state. Furthermore, optimization schemes, such as adjusting the filter bandwidth and slowing down the accumulation of nonlinear effects, are proposed to achieve a high-energy pulse output in the Mamyshev oscillator.

Abstract:Dissipative solitons (DSs) widely exist in optical systems and mode-locked fiber lasers provide a versatile playground to study their dynamics. Recently, Mamyshev oscillators (MOs), which rely upon a pair of narrow filters with offset passing frequencies, have emerged as a new type of femtosecond fiber lasers. Besides creating high-energy broadband DSs, MOs have been predicted to support periodically pulsating DSs whose observation remains elusive. Here, we present a comprehensive experimental and numerical investigation of pulsating DSs in an ytterbium MO. By reducing the filter separation, we observe pulsation in both single-pulse and DS molecule states. The output pulse energy can vary as large as 40 times in our MO. Single-shot spectra measured by the dispersive Fourier transform method further enables the observation of spectral bandwidth breathing and soliton explosion in the pulsation. In addition, pulsation lasting 9 round trips and even a chaotic pulsation state are observed. Numerical simulations based on a lumped vector model qualitatively agree with our observation. Our results enrich pulsating DS dynamics and reveal the impact of filter separation on the stability of MOs.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated an all-fiber Er3+-doped Mamyshev oscillator (MO) with high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and low mode-locking threshold at 1550 nm wavelength. By adopting two offset bandpass filters in the oscillator, the all-fiber MO can achieve mode-locking operation with threshold ~60 mW. Highly stable pulses with SNR of 82.1 dB and 91.6 dB, pulse duration of 145 fs and 1.058 ps have been delivered from the main output coupler and the other output of the MO by managing the intra-cavity dispersion and nonlinear phase shift, respectively. This stable all-fiber MO at 1550 nm with ultrafast pulse duration may provide an attractive solution for ultrafast optoelectronic applications in terms of environmental stability, pulse duration and pulse energy.

Abstract:A high-energy Mamyshev oscillator was experimentally demonstrated with an all polarization-maintaining 10125 fiber configuration, which is initiated by an external pulse radiation. A maximum output power of 787.3mW with the single pulse energy of 83.5nJ was achieved at a repetition rate of 9.43MHz. The pulse width was compressed to 56fs with a grating pair, corresponding to a peak power of 1.15MW considering the insertion loss of the grating pair. The evolution of the pulse properties versus the enhancement of the energy was examined and an excellent long-time stability was verified. It is believed that such a compact all-fiber ultrafast oscillator could be a promising source for practical applications such as material processing, medicine, nonlinear microscopy and so on.

Abstract:A compact high-power ultra-wideband bipolar pulse generator based on a modified Marx circuit is designed, which is mainly composed of a primary power supply, Marx generator, sharpening and cutoff subnanosecond spark gap switches, and coaxial transmission lines. The Marx generator with modified circuit structure has thirty-two stages and is composed of eight disk-like modules. Each module consists of four capacitors, two spark gap switches, four charging inductors, and a mechanical support. To simplify the design of the charging structure and reduce the number of switches, four groups of inductors are used to charge the capacitors of the Marx generator, two of which are used for positive voltage charging and the other two for negative voltage charging. When the capacitor of each stage is charged to 35 kV, the maximum output peak voltage can reach 1 MV when the Marx generator is open circuit. The high-voltage pulse generated by the Marx generator charges the transmission line and forms a bipolar pulse through sharpening and cutoff switches. All transmission lines used for bipolar pulse generation have an impedance of 10 Ω. When the 950 kV pulse voltage generated by the Marx generator is fed into the transmission line, the bipolar pulse peak voltage can reach 390 kV, the center frequency of the pulse is about 400 MHz, and the output peak power is about 15.2 GW.

Abstract:An approach to generating periodic spiking pulses in a broadband opto-electronic oscillator (OEO) without external injection is proposed and demonstrated. Through biasing the electro-optic Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) in the OEO cavity at its nonlinear working point, spiking pulses are excited by the self-generated chaos under the combined action of the loop filter response time and the nonlinear excitation effect. An interaction force is introduced between pulses. As a result, the pulse number in a single roundtrip duration and the temporal distribution of the generated spiking pulses can be tuned by adjusting the loop gain and the direct-current (DC) bias voltage of the MZM. Both numerical simulation and experiment are carried out to demonstrate the spiking pulse generation mechanism, where ultra-short spiking pulse trains with even and uneven temporal distribution are generated.

Abstract:While the performance of mode-locked fiber lasers has been improved significantly, the limited gain bandwidth restricts them to generate ultrashort pulses approaching a few cycles or even shorter. Here we present a novel method to achieve few cycle pulses (~5 cycles) with ultra-broad spectrum (~400 nm). To our best knowledge, this is the shortest pulse width and broadest spectrum directly generated from fiber lasers. It is noteworthy that a dramatic ultrashort pulse evolution can be stabilized in a laser oscillator by the unique nonlinear processes of a self-similar evolution as a nonlinear attractor in the gain fiber and a perfect saturable absorber action of the Mamyshev oscillator.

Dissipative Soliton Pulsation in a Mamyshev Oscillator

Abstract:We report on the first experimental investigation on the dissipative soliton pulsation in a Mamyshev oscillator. We observe period-2 pulsation in a single pulse state as well as a bound soliton (soliton molecule) state when the filter separation (4 nm) is relatively small. Single-shot spectra measured by the time-stretch dispersive Fourier transform (TSDFT) method also reveal the spectral bandwidth breathing during pulsation. Period-3 pulsation of a soliton state comprising two wide spaced DSs has also been observed, where the 2 DSs pulsate in different patterns. Our observations enrich possible pulsating dynamics in mode-locked fiber lasers.

Abstract:We demonstrated an all-fiber Er-doped Mamyshev oscillator with short pulse duration and high peak power. Through the dispersion management technique and accumulation of sufficient nonlinear phase shift, stable pulses with repetition rate of 6.55 MHz, 20-dB spectral bandwidth of 78.2 nm, pulse duration of 72 fs and peak power of 86 kW were achieved from output coupler (OC) device directly without extra compression. Simulations have been performed to show the direct generation of ultrafast laser pulse from the Mamyshev oscillator based on the extended nonlinear Schrdinger equation. To the best of our knowledge, this is by far the shortest pulse duration, the highest experimental peak power Er-doped Mamyshev oscillator.
