Stochastic Environmental Research and Risk Assessment
Abstract:In recent years, earthquakes have been frequent near Xingwen County in southwestern China, where frequent landslides have continued to increase in the aftermath of earthquakes, causing severe infrastructure damage and economic losses. Therefore, tools to assess and map post-earthquake landslide susceptibility have become indispensable in today's society. This study aims to integrate machine learning (ML) and statistical models to assess post-earthquake landslide susceptibility. We first established comprehensive framework by introducing surface deformation information as a seismic factor. The multicollinearity among the landslide condition factors (LCFs) was then assessed using the pearson correlation coefficient (PCC). The PCC values showed that only the altitude difference is redundant among all the LCFs. Finally, we integrated the Frequency Ratio (FR) and Index of Entropy (IoE) with the Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) to evaluate the post-earthquake landslide susceptibility. The results calculated by IoE revealed that the slope, elevation, plan curvature, lithology, and distance to fault are the essential causative factors for landslides. The final landslide susceptibility maps demonstrate that between 32.9% and 38.7% of the study area has high and very high landslide susceptibility. The values of several parameters proved that the hybrid FR–ELM and IoE–ELM models demonstrated superior performance compared to FR, IoE, and ELM. Thus, compared to the independent model, the hybrid model proposed in this study is more capable of identifying actual landslide areas due to its improved accuracy.
