Abstract:The design of materials that can mimic encoded shape evolution in nature is important but challenging. Here we present a simple yet versatile strategy for programming the sequential deformation of hydrogel sheets to acquire desired actuation motions and geometric shapes. The method relies on the dual-gradient structure-enabled snapping deformation of hydrogels through the accumulation and burst release of elastic energy, as well as the patterning of the prestored energy in gels. Pretreating distinct regions of the hydrogel sheets with different durations of the same stimulus (or with different stimuli) allows for locally prestoring chemical energy that can be converted to temporospatially patterned elastic energy and abruptly released to drive the successive snapping of different regions of hydrogels in predefined onset sequences. The sequence of energy release (i.e., the sequence of snapping deformation) of the local regions for hydrogels can be reprogrammed by different local prestimulation methods, which allows one gel to deform into various defined geometric configurations. The general mathematic criteria are developed to predict the energy release and snapping of the hydrogels. This work can provide guidance for the design of new-generation actuators and soft robotics.
Bioinspired bilayer hydrogel-based actuator with rapidly bidirectional actuation, programmable deformation and devisable functionality

Abstract:Smart hydrogel actuators which respond to external stimuli have attracted great attention and shown good application prospects in many fields as their simplicity and reliability, while the challenges remain in terms of the relatively low driving force, responsive velocity and deformation amplitude considering the structure-dependent actuation behavior. Here, we propose a thermosensitive hydrogel-based actuator with bioinspired bilayer structure by applying a textured airlaid paper to induce the formation of heterogeneous construction. This nature-inspired design benefits the hydrogel-based actuator rapidly bidirectional actuation, realizing excellent bending velocity (140.6° s−1 within first 5 s) and bending amplitude (850.0° within 30 s) in hot water, powerful recovery in cool water and remarkable reproducibility upon external environmental stimulus by optimizing the texture orientation and mechanical property of airlaid paper. The excellent bonding between airlaid paper and hydrogel also endows the actuator satisfactory stability for circularly operation under water environment for weeks. The programmable deformation and devisable functionality are further realized by propagable and elaborate design for architecture and component of responsive hydrogel, favoring the hydrogel-based actuator alterable ethanol-sensitive ability, photothermal drivability and regenerability. This bilayer hydrogel-based actuator provides promising potentials for the applications in soft robots, smart actuators, artificial muscles, and intelligent human-machine technologies.

Abstract:Porous structures have emerged as a breakthrough of shape-morphing hydrogels to achieve a rapid response. However, these porous actuators generally suffer from a lack of complexity and diversity in obtained 3D shapes. Herein, a simple yet versatile strategy is developed to generate shape-morphing hydrogels with both fast deformation and enhanced designability in 3D shapes by combining two promising technologies: electrospinning and 3D printing. Elaborate patterns are printed on mesostructured stimuli-responsive electrospun membranes, modulating in-plane and interlayer internal stresses induced by swelling/shrinkage mismatch, and thus guiding morphing behaviors of electrospun membranes to adapt to changes of the environment. With this strategy, a series of fast deformed hydrogel actuators are constructed with various distinctive responsive behaviors, including reversible/irreversible formations of 3D structures, folding of 3D tubes, and formations of 3D structures with multi low-energy states. It is worth noting that although poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) is chosen as the model system in the present research, our strategy is applicable to other stimuli-responsive hydrogels, which enriches designs of rapid deformed hydrogel actuators.

Abstract:Inspired by intelligent biomaterials which often have flexible responsiveness to multiple environmental cues and strengthen their mechanical properties by trainings, emerging soft actuators require programmable manipulation. Currently, the integration of such characteristics as rapid self-strengthening, strain-adaptive stiffening and smart actuation, into a single hydrogel actuator is urgently needed. Here, we report a self-strengthened hydrogel actuator based on the semi-interpenetrating polymer network consisting of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm), which can display diverse programmable actuations by responding to temperature/salt stimuli. In the design, the layer of freeze-thawed PNIPAm/PVA (PPGel-F) is assembled with another original PNIPAm/PVA hydrogel layer (PPGel) into one device. By taking advantage of the PVA crystalline nanofibrils in the PPGel-F matrix, the differentiated swelling degree across the bilayer structure gives rise to asymmetric deformations and the resultant shape transformation. Moreover, upon the mechanical training with less than 100 cycles, the anisotropic arrangement of PVA nanofibrils through strong hydrogen bonding interactions can swiftly immobilize the amorphous polymer chains orientation along the tensile direction. This enhances the strain-induced crystallization, thereby generating the rapid self- strengthening behavior. The proposed work provides potential solution for constructing dynamically adaptive hydrogel systems that can mimic biological tissues for more intelligent soft robotics and bionic research.

Abstract:Self-shaping materials have attracted tremendous interest due to their promising applications in soft robotics, and flexible electronics, etc. In this field, a crucial issue is how to construct complex yet elaborate structures in activematerials. Here, we present the fabrication of composite hydrogels with both in-plane and out-of-plane structural gradients by multi-step photolithography and the resulting controllable deformations. A patterned gel with a layered fibrous structure like bean pod is developed, which shows programmed deformations from a flat shape to a twisted helix. The parameters of the helix can be deliberately tuned. This approach enables patterning different responsive polymers in specific regions of composite gels, leading to multiple shape transformations under stimulations. The controllability of intricate structures, together with tunable responses of localized gels, facilitates the generation of complex internal stresses and three-dimensional deformations of composite gels toward specific applications.

Abstract:The deformable diversity of organisms in nature has inspired the development of bionic hydrogel actuators. However, the anisotropic structures of hydrogel actuators cannot be altered after the fabrication process, which restricts hydrogel actuators to provide complex and diverse shape deformations. Herein, we propose a dual programming method to generate numerous anisotropic structures from initial isotropic gelatin-containing hydrogels; the isotropic hydrogel blocks could be first assembled into anisotropic structures based on the coil-triple helix transition of gelatin, and then, the assembled hydrogels could further be fixed into various temporary anisotropies, so that they can produce complex and diverse deformations under the stimulation of pH. In addition, the shape programming and deformation behaviors are reversible. This dual programming method provides more potential for the application of hydrogel actuators in soft robots and bionics.

Abstract:Hydrogels can convert external stimuli into shape deformation and mechanical motion, leading to the potential applications in intelligent devices and soft robotics. However, it is difficult to control the site‐selective shape deformation in a single hydrogel system in comparison with the traditional bilayer actuators with difference in structure or composition across the thickness. Here, a strategy to achieve the programmable shape deformation of hydrogel from a single precursor by grayscale stereolithography is proposed. The designed grayscale patterns can govern the spatially gradient crosslinking density of hydrogels, which leads to the heterogeneity in physicochemical performance, especially swelling ability. As a result, the swelling mismatch inducing the nonuniform internal stresses can drive the printed hydrogels to deform as the expected shape in three dimensions although there is no apparent asymmetric features and bilayer configuration. Grayscale light intensity and exposure time, as the digital printing codes can parametrically regulate the predictable shape deformation. More importantly, hydration and dehydration characterizations can endow the reversible feature of shape deformation hydrogel, benefiting to design the hydrogel actuators and sensitive devices. It is believed that integration of the advanced grayscale stereolithography together with the functional hydrogels uncovers a facile strategy to broad opportunities for sensors, soft robots, actuators, and so on. The desirable grayscale slices with arbitrary patterns can facilely guide the photo‐polymerization process of hydrogel precursor to generate the gradient crosslinking density on demands in different areas, which thereafter results in the controllable heterogeneity of hydrogels in physicochemical properties. It can govern the site‐selective shape deformation in three dimensions by swelling mismatch induced local stress.

Abstract:Hydrogel actuators with controllable deformation and excellent biocompatibility are widely used in soft robot, valve, drug delivery and lenses. However, the stimulation response performance of existing hydrogel actuators mostly focuses on a single active layer, which greatly affects its driving performance and service life. In this work, we integrate temperature-responsive hydrogel (Poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide), PNIPAM) and pH-responsive hydrogel (polyacrylic acid, PAAc) into one system to fabricate a dual active layer composite hydrogel actuator with high performance. Based on the PAAc hydrogels achieving contract or expand at different pH values, the obtained actuator exhibits admirable bidirectional bending characteristics. In addition, the anisotropic bamboo sheet endows the hydrogel actuator with programmable 3 D complex deformation. Benefitting from the synergy and different responsiveness between the two active layers, the hydrogel actuator not only has multiple response performance, but also greatly improves its deformation degree and response speed. More importantly, these promising properties of the actuator have broad application prospects in the development of pattern design and intelligent switch. This work proposes a promising strategy for the structural design of hydrogel actuators with excellent performance, and encourages more exploration of the application range of the actuator.

Abstract:Shape-morphing hydrogels bear promising prospects as soft actuators and for robotics. However, they are mostly restricted to applications in the abiotic domain due to the harsh physicochemical conditions typically necessary to induce shape morphing. Here, multilayer hydrogel actuator systems are developed using biocompatible and photocrosslinkable oxidized, methacrylated alginate and methacrylated gelatin that permit encapsulation and maintenance of living cells within the hydrogel actuators and implement programmed and controlled actuations with multiple shape changes. The hydrogel actuators encapsulating cells enable defined self-folding and/or user-regulated, on-demand-folding into specific 3D architectures under physiological conditions, with the capability to partially bioemulate complex developmental processes such as branching morphogenesis. The hydrogel actuator systems can be utilized as novel platforms for investigating the effect of programmed multiple-step and reversible shape morphing on cellular behaviors in 3D extracellular matrix and the role of recapitulating developmental and healing morphogenic processes on promoting new complex tissue formation.

Abstract:<p>Inspired by nature, diverse biomimetic hydrogel actuators are fabricated and become one of the most essential components of bionics research. Usually, the anisotropic structure of a hydrogel actuator is generated at the early fabrication process, only a specific shape transformation behavior can be produced under external stimuli, and thus has limited the development of hydrogel actuators toward the biomimetic shape deformation behavior. Herein, a novel bilayer hydrogel having a thermoresponsive actuating layer and a metal ion‐responsive memorizing layer is proposed, therefore, a 2D hydrogel film can be fixed into various 3D shapes via supramolecular metal‐ligand coordination, with further realizing programmable 4D shape deformation under the stimulus of temperature. By manipulating the temporary shapes via shape memory behavior, various temporary anisotropic structures can be obtained via the bilayer hydrogel, thus producing diverse reversible shape deformation performances, which is expected to promote the development of intelligent polymeric materials.</p>

Abstract:Smart hydrogel actuators with programmable anisotropic structures present fascinating prospects considering their distinctive shape transformation and controllable environmental responsiveness under external stimuli. However, the design of anisotropic hydrogels with simple and universal fabrication and programmable functionality is challenging for their valuable applications in smart actuators and soft robots. Herein, a simple, green, and devisable strategy is proposed to construct a heterogeneous porous hydrogel system by the different liquid diffusion (such as amyl alcohol, water, and ethanol) into a monomeric precursor solution of thermosensitive hydrogels. The well-defined micro/nanoporous gradient and patterned structures related to selective liquid stratification and interfacial diffusion favor the fast response and accurate programmable deformation of hydrogels under temperature stimuli. Inspiringly, this simple diffusion-driven tactic can be perfectly applicable for different responsive hydrogels with programmable multifunctionality by adding functional nanomaterials into the diffusible liquid. This green, general, and facile diffusion-driven strategy provides significant guidance for fabricating environmentally responsive hydrogels with tailorable functionality for their multipurpose applications in drug delivery, bioengineering, smart actuators, and soft robots.

Abstract:Nature endows numerous organisms with the ability to realize their basic physiological activities through stimulus-responsive actuation. Inspired by these interesting biological structures, various biomimetic hydrogel actuators with excellent controllability, fast response, and toughness have been developed. Here, the principles of enabling stimulus-responsive behavior in polymer materials are first reviewed for the example of biological materials and subsequently recent progress in implementing stimuli-response behavior in bioinspired hydrogel actuators are being discussed. Particular emphasis is on the mechanisms underlying mechanical toughening of hydrogel actuators and its role in applications. The goal is to highlight recent progress, find the common threads, and discuss the fundamental differences to determine the current challenges and future directions for this field.

Abstract:Hydrogel is considered as a suitable choice for fabrication of actuators because of its similarity to biological tissues and multi-stimuli responsiveness. However, it is necessary to address the limit resulted from the traditional bilayer structure that leads to interface issue or permanent gradient structure that leads to unchangeable deformation mode. Herein, a highly-stretchable and reprogrammable PVA-based hydrogel actuator is reported. The actuator was fabricated through a freezing-thawing treatment of the blend of PVA, mono (9-anthracene methyl) succinate grafted PVA (PVA-SA-AN), tannic acid (TA) and cetyltrimethyl-ammonium bromide (CTAB) followed with UV irradiation. According to the scheme, PVA forms the hydrogel substrate and helps disperse the hydrophobic PVA-SA-AN into the hydrogel. TA forms hydrogen bonds with PVA and PVA-SA-AN, providing enhancement to the mechanical properties of the hydrogel. CTAB further disperses the anthracene groups so that the UV-induced reversible dimerization/cleavage can endow the hydrogel with the function of water-driven actuation as well as reversible programmability. The improved mechanical properties and the reprogrammable actuation performance are demonstrated. We believe that the proposed design strategy can provide a facile and low-cost way to develop high-performance reprogrammable hydrogel actuators.

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive shape-transforming hydrogels have shown great potential toward various engineering applications including soft robotics and microfluidics. Despite significant progress in designing hydrogels with ever more sophisticated shape-morphing behaviors, an ultimate goal yet to be fulfilled is programmable reversible shape transformation. It is reported here that transient structural anisotropy can be programmed into copolymer hydrogels of N-isopropylacrylamide and stearyl acrylate. Structural anisotropy arises from the deformed hydrophobic domains of the stearyl groups after thermomechanical programming, which serves as a template for the reversible globule-to-coil transition of the poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) chains. The structural anisotropy is transient and can be erased upon cooling. This allows repeated programming for reversible shape transformation, an unknown feature for the current hydrogels. The programmable reversible transformation is expected to greatly extend the technical scope for hydrogel-based devices.

Abstract:Nature provides abundant inspiration and elegant paradigms for the development of smart materials that can actuate, morph, and move on demand. One remarkable capacity of living organisms is to adapt their shapes or positions in response to stimuli. Programmed deformations or movements in plant organs are mainly driven by water absorption/dehydration of cells, while versatile motions of mollusks are based on contraction/extension of muscles. Understanding the general principles of these morphing and motion behaviors can give rise to disruptive technologies for soft robotics, flexible electronics, biomedical devices, etc. As one kind of intelligent material, hydrogels with high similarity to soft biotissues and diverse responses to external stimuli are an ideal candidate to construct soft actuators and robots.The objective of this Account is to give an overview of the fundamental principles for controllable deformations and motions of hydrogels, with a focus on the structure designs and responsive functions of the corresponding soft actuators and robots. This field has been rapidly developed in recent years with a growing understanding of working principles in natural organisms and a substantial revolution of manufacturing technologies to devise bioinspired hydrogel systems with desired structures. Diverse morphing hydrogels and soft actuators/robots have been developed on the basis of several pioneering works, ranging from bending and folding deformations of bilayer hydrogels to self-shaping of non-Euclidean hydrogel surfaces, and from thermoactuated bilayer gel "hands" to electrodriven polyelectrolyte gel "worms". These morphing hydrogels have demonstrated active functions and versatile applications in biomedical and engineering fields.In this Account, we discuss recent progress in morphing hydrogels and highlight the design principles and relevant applications. First, we introduce the fundamentals of basic deformation modes, together with generic structure features, actuation strategies, and morphing mechanisms. The advantages of in-plane gradient structures are highlighted for programmable deformations by harnessing the out-of-plane buckling with bistability nature to obtain sophisticated three-dimensional configurations. Next, we give an overview of soft actuators and robots based on morphing hydrogels and focus on the working principles of the active systems with different structure designs. We discuss the advancements of hydrogel-based soft robots capable of swift locomotion with different gaits and emphasize the significances of structure control and dynamic actuation. Then we summarize versatile applications of hydrogel-based actuators and robots in biomedicines, cargo delivery, soft electronics, information encryption, and so forth. Some hydrogel robots with a built-in feedback loop and self-sensing system exhibit collaborative functions and advanced intelligence that are informative for the design of next-generation hydrogel machines. Finally, concluding remarks are given to discuss future opportunities and remaining challenges in this field. For example, miniature hydrogel-based actuators/robots with therapeutic or diagnostic functions are highly desired for biomedical applications. The morphing mechanisms summarized in this Account should be applicable to other responsive materials. We hope that this Account will inspire more scientists to be involved in this emerging area and make contributions to reveal novel working principles, design multifunctional soft machines, and explore applications in diverse fields.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:There are several natural materials which have evolved functional gradients, ingeniously attaining maximal efficacy from limited components. Herein, we utilized the spatiotemporal distribution of initiator acetylacetone to regulate the multienzyme polymerization and fabricate a chitosan-polymer hydrogel. The temporal priority order of acetylacetone was higher than phenol-modified chitosan by density functional theory calculation. The acetylacetone within the gelatin could gradually diffuse spatially into the chitosan hydrogel to fabricate the composite hydrogel with gradient network structure. The gradient hydrogel possessed a transferring topography from the two-dimensional pattern. A continuously decreased modulus along with acetylacetone diffusion was confirmed by atomic force microscope-based force mapping experiment. The water-retaining ability of various regions was confirmed by low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TG) analysis, which led to the spontaneous actuation of gradient hydrogel with maximum 1821°/h curling speed and 227° curling angle. Consequently, the promising gradient hydrogels could be applied as intelligent actuators and flexible robots.
