Abstract:In Earth’s Van Allen radiation belts, ultralow frequency (ULF) waves play an important role in accelerating and transporting charged particles via a resonant process named drift resonance. When such a resonance occurs, a resonant particle observes a constant phase of the wave electric field, and therefore experiences a net energy excursion. In the conventional theory of drift resonance, a linearization approach is often applied with assumption of a weak wave-particle energy exchange. Here we extend the linear theory of drift resonance into the nonlinear regime, to express the particle motion in the form of pendulum equation that describes the nonlinear trapping of particles in the wave-carried potential well, and to predict characteristic signatures of the nonlinear process observable from a virtual spacecraft. Such newly predicted signatures are found to agree with observations from NASA’s Van Allen Probes, which provides the first identification of nonlinear drift resonance. We further consider the roles of magnetospheric convection in this nonlinear process, which provides a location-dependent driver term to the pendulum equation of particle motion. The driven pendulum equation suggests a significant particle diffusion and thermalization, especially for ULF waves with large wavenumbers. This study, therefore, shed new light on the understanding of particle dynamics in the inner magnetosphere.

Abstract:Ultralow frequency (ULF) waves have long been known to resonate with magnetospheric charged particles through their drift and bounce motions. Most research interest has focused on the resonance with drift motion, which can accelerate charged particles at very high energies. The role of the bounce motion, especially for particles with lower energies, has attracted less attention so far. Here we start from the general theory of wave-particle interactions to predict the characteristic, observable signatures of drift-bounce resonance. Such signatures can be described in the particle pitch angle spectrum as a series of inclined stripes, with the inclination angle depending on the latitude of the observing spacecraft. Each stripe is also twisted at two conjugated pitch angles, suggesting significant phase shifts across resonant pitch angles. These predicted signatures are found consistent with observations from the THEMIS (Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms) spacecraft, and therefore provide an identification of drift-bounce resonance together with a validated picture over the importance of particle's bounce motion in the ULF wave-particle interactions.

Abstract:Ultralow frequency (ULF) electromagnetic waves in Earth's magnetosphere can accelerate charged particles via a process called drift resonance. In the conventional drift resonance theory, a default assumption is that the wave growth rate is time independent, positive, and extremely small. However, this is not the case for ULF waves in the real magnetosphere. The ULF waves must have experienced an earlier growth stage when their energy was taken from external and/or internal sources, and as time proceeds the waves have to be damped with a negative growth rate. Therefore, a more generalized theory on particle behavior during different stages of ULF wave evolution is required. In this paper, we introduce a time-dependent imaginary wave frequency to accommodate the growth and damping of the waves in the drift resonance theory, so that the wave-particle interactions during the entire wave lifespan can be studied. We then predict from the generalized theory particle signatures during different stages of the wave evolution, which are consistent with observations from Van Allen Probes. The more generalized theory, therefore, provides new insights into ULF wave evolution and wave-particle interactions in the magnetosphere.
Drift Resonance Between Particles and Compressional Toroidal ULF Waves in Dipole Magnetic Field

Abstract:We examine the drift-resonant particle dynamics for toroidal ultralow frequency (ULF) waves in a pure dipole background geomagnetic field. We confirm that the resonant condition originally believed to apply only for poloidal ULF waves, m omega d=omega, also applies for compressional toroidal waves. The predicted phase relationships have been confirmed from Van Allen Probes observations. Their good agreement provides the first observational evidence for the drift resonance condition controlled by the compressional toroidal ULF wave. Moreover, we extend the drift resonance theory into a nonlinear regime. The resulting particle motion can be described by a modified pendulum equation with solutions depending on the wave number m. For high-m toroidal waves, the resonant islands become asymmetric to perturb the particle trajectories within each potential well and consequently increase the trapping widths in both energy and L-shell. We further carry out test-particle simulations to show the evolution of electron distribution functions when they interact with either toroidal or poloidal waves. These findings demonstrate that toroidal ULF waves, like their poloidal counterparts, play an important role in magnetospheric particle dynamics.

Abstract:The nonlinear interaction of ions with multiple electrostatic waves propagating perpendicularly across a uniform magnetic field is investigated both analytically and numerically. Applying a multiscale expansion method with the wave amplitude as the perturbation parameter, a general nonlinear resonance condition is analytically derived. Under this condition, it is confirmed that multiple waves even below the cyclotron frequency and small amplitude are capable of effectively producing acceleration or stochastic heating by numerical simulation. Compared to the single wave situation, the stochastic threshold for heating by multiple waves with frequencies satisfied with a nonlinear resonance condition is significantly reduced because the nonlinear interaction of ions with multiple waves leads more easily to overlapping of islands and spreading of the stochastic layer in phase space. The above result is helpful to understand the energization mechanism of ions in the solar corona.

Abstract:Poloidal mode ultra-low-frequency (ULF) waves with high azimuthal mode number (high-m) are common throughout Earth's magnetosphere. The electric fields in these waves are on the order of tens of millivolts per meter, and are large enough to energize ions and electrons via drift- and drift-bounce wave-particle resonance. In this article, we present full-orbit test-particle simulations of drift-bounce resonance using a numerical model of ULF waves. The model uses a dipole magnetic field and can accommodate a realistic ionosphere with height-resolved Pedersen and Hall conductivity. It is demonstrated that second-harmonic poloidal mode waves can energize ions to tens of keV depending on the wave amplitude. The test-particle simulations also predict ion flux oscillations that have energy dispersion similar to many satellite observations. It will be shown that features in the energy dispersion are in agreement with theoretical considerations.

Abstract:In the Earth's inner magnetosphere, charged particles can be accelerated and transported by ultralow frequency (ULF) waves via drift resonance. We investigate the effects of magnetospheric convection on the nonlinear drift resonance process, which provides an inhomogeneity factor S to externally drive the pendulum equation that describes the particle motion in the ULF wave field. The S factor, defined as the ratio of the driving amplitude to the square of the pendulum trapping frequency, is found to vary with magnetic local time and as a consequence, oscillates quasi-periodically at the particle drift frequency. To better understand the particle behavior governed by the driven pendulum equation, we carry out simulations to obtain the evolution of electron distribution functions in energy and L-shell phase space. We find that resonant electrons can remain trapped by the low-m ULF waves under strong convection electric field, whereas for high-m ULF waves, the electrons trajectories can be significantly modified. More interestingly, the electron drift frequency is close to the nonlinear trapping frequency for intermediate-m ULF waves, which corresponds to chaotic motion of resonant electrons. These findings shed new light on the nature of particle coherent and diffusive transport in the inner magnetosphere.

Abstract:The interaction between a magnetized ion and two monochromatic shear Alfven waves propagating obliquely to an ambient magnetic field is investigated both analytically and numerically. According to the Hamiltonian of this system, the invariant of motion at the lowest order and the half-island widths at the corresponding resonances are obtained analytically using the Lie transformation method. It is shown that these theoretical results agree with the numerical ones from the Poincare surface of section. The regular motions from the invariant and the transition to stochasticity due to resonance overlapping are demonstrated. Compared to the case of a single wave, there may be a lower stochastic threshold in the multiple-wave problem.

Abstract:One of the most important questions in space physics is how the energy of the solar wind is transmitted to energetic particles in the Earth's magnetosphere, part of which is in the form of ultra-low-frequency (ULF) electromagnetic waves in the mHz frequency range. More specifically, ULF waves can provide diagnostics of the magnetosphere. For example, ionospheric conductance and mass density structure can be derived; substorm onset can be timed; and geomagnetic field lines can be mapped. ULF waves can also modify the magnetosphere such as through nonlinear effects allowing Kelvin-Helmholtz surface wave energy at the magnetopause to penetrate into magnetosphere, and radial diffusion, which plays an essential role in flux enhancement and particle acceleration of the radiation belts. Hannes Alfvén first proposed the existence of transverse "electrohydrodynamic" waves in the magnetized plasma. The magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) theory was first applied to explain the observed geomagnetic pulsations in Earth's magnetosphere, which has been confirmed by spacecraft observations and ground-based magnetometers. ULF waves are usually categorized into poloidal and toroidal modes by different directions of the perturbed electromagnetic field. Magnetic line oscillations in the radial direction yields azimuthal electric fields (\begin{document}$ {E}_{\varphi } $\end{document}) and are referred to as poloidal waves, while the motion of field lines in the azimuthal direction yields electric field oscillations in the radial direction (\begin{document}$ {E}_{r} $\end{document}) which are referred to as toroidal waves. Efficient interaction between ULF waves and charged particles requires comparable periods of waves and particle's drift motion. An acceleration mechanism capable of a continuous energy exchange between ULF waves and charged particles is wave-particle drift resonance. When such resonance occurs, the azimuthal drift speed of a resonant particle matches the wave propagation speed, and the particle experiences a constant phase of the wave electric field. This process enables a sustained energy exchange between ULF waves and charged particles, which provides a major source of particle acceleration and diffusion in the Van Allen radiation belts. The conventional drift resonance theory assumes that the particle trajectories are unperturbed despite their energy gain or loss from ULF waves. This assumption is usually invalid in Earth's magnetosphere because ULF waves can have larger amplitudes and/or durations. The large wave-particle energy exchange can modify the particle trajectory and cause significant nonlinear effects. This paper mainly reviews the nonlinear drift resonance between poloidal/toroidal ULF waves and charged particles in the inner magnetosphere. The particle behavior can be described by a pendulum equation in poloidal ULF waves, with the nonlinear trapping frequency determined by the ULF wave amplitude. We further predict, based on the newly-developed theory, the observable signatures of nonlinear drift resonance such as rolled-up structures in the energy spectrum of particle fluxes. After considering how this manifests in particle data with finite energy resolution, we compare the predicted signatures with Van Allen Probes observations. Their good agreement provides the first observational identification of the nonlinear drift resonance, which highlights the importance of nonlinear effects in magnetospheric particle dynamics under ULF waves. Drift resonance between particles and toroidal ULF waves can occur even without the noon-midnight asymmetry of background magnetic field. This effect originates from the wave-carried compressional magnetic field oscillations, which turn out to play a key role in the energy exchange between toroidal ULF waves and charged particles. The resulting particle motion can be described by a modified pendulum equation with solutions depending on the wave number. These findings demonstrate that toroidal ULF waves, like their poloidal counterparts, play an important role in magnetospheric particle dynamics. This is significant because the new derivation allows a large body of existing work and understanding on the pendulum equation to be brought to bear on the problem of ULF wave-particle interactions in the inner magnetosphere. As particle detector technology improves, more nonlinear features will become observable, allowing further tests of the theory presented here.
Alteration of Particle Drift Resonance Dynamics Near Poloidal Mode Field Line Resonance Structures

Abstract:We examine the effect on drift-resonant particle dynamics of a strongly peaked internally driven poloidal mode field line resonance (FLR; with specified frequency omega in the Pc5 range and azimuthal mode number m>>1). Using an analytic magneto-hydrodynamic model in a dipole field to describe the ultra low frequency wave mode, we use the bounce-averaged formalism of Northrop (1963) to obtain equations of motion for charged particles in the wave frame and find an analytic solution for the case of a temporally constant ultra low frequency wave amplitude profile. Focusing on equatorially mirroring electrons in this study, we demonstrate that, for sufficiently peaked radial profiles, multiple drift resonances appear that are associated with the FLR peak. These are in addition to the well-known zeroth-order drift resonance location, occurring when the unperturbed drift speed phi?0 satisfies the resonance condition (m phi?-omega=0). The additional resonances arise because the strongly peaked FLR wave field components provide sufficiently strong perturbations to the azimuthal drift speed to cause multiple zero crossings in the resonance condition. These additional resonances have trapping periods much lower than that of the zeroth-order resonance and considerably complicate the electron dynamics. Further properties of these resonances and their measurable effect on electron dynamics are discussed. For example, their effect on observations of energetic electron flux on board satellites in the vicinity of an FLR is calculated and shown to significantly distort the typical signature associated with drift resonance (modulations in electron flux at the wave frequency with a 180 degrees phase change across the resonant energy).

Abstract:In this study, we present Van Allen Probe observations showing that seed (hundreds of keV) and core (greater than or similar to 1 MeV) electrons can resonate with ultra-low-frequency (ULF) wave modes with distinctivemvalues simultaneously. An unusual electron energy spectrogram with double-banded resonant structure was recorded by energetic particle, composition, and thermal plasma (ECT)-magnetic electron ion spectrometer (MagEIS) and, meanwhile, boomerang stripes in pitch angle spectrogram appeared at the lower energy band. A localized drift resonance withm = 10 wave component was responsible for the resonant band peaked at similar to 200 keV while a global drift resonance withm = 3 component gave rise to the upper band resonance peaked at similar to 1 MeV. Time-Of-Flight on boomerang stripes suggested that the localized drift resonance with similar to 200 keV electrons was confined within the plasmaspheric plume. Electron flux modulations were reproduced by numerical simulations in good consistency with the observations, supporting the scenario that localized and global drift resonance could coexist in the outer belt electron dynamics simultaneously.

Abstract:A general theoretical framework for investigating the nonlinear dynamics of phase space zonal structures is presented in this work. It is then, more specifically, applied to the limit where the nonlinear evolution time scale is smaller or comparable to the wave–particle trapping period. In this limit, both theoretical and numerical simulation studies show that nonadiabatic frequency chirping and phase locking could lead to secular resonant particle transport on meso- or macro-scales. The interplay between mode structures and resonant particles then provides the crucial ingredient to properly understand and analyze the nonlinear dynamics of Alfvén wave instabilities excited by nonperturbative energetic particles in burning fusion plasmas. Analogies with autoresonance in nonlinear dynamics and with superradiance in free-electron lasers are also briefly discussed.

Abstract:This research delves into the dynamic behavior of acoustic levitation of the particle chain in a nonlinear standing wave field. Experimental acoustic levitation control tests reveal bifurcation and jump phenomena during dynamic adjustments to resonant cavity height. Employing the 10-particle chain experiments and the COMSOL simulation models, the Sine-Gordon 2D vibration model is established to study the dynamic deformation process of the particle chain. The study uncovers the nonlinear interaction of particle lateral vibrations, horizontal acoustic radiation force, and conical wave fields that generate the jumping standing wave field. Notably, the fourth particle acts as a prominent jumping critical point in the secondary standing wave field, facilitating the derivation of the particle chain's nonlinear levitation dynamics. This discovery provides us with a new method to regulate the particle chain system.

The Excitation of Eastward Second Harmonic Poloidal Waves Through Drift-Bounce Resonance with Protons in the Magnetic Dip

Abstract:The drift-bounce resonance between ultralow-frequency (ULF) wave and charged particles is an efficient way to transfer energy. In this study, we report the excitation of ULF waves through drift-bounce resonance with protons in the magnetic dip for the first time. On 4 September 2015, Van Allen probe B observed ULF signals with a frequency of ~10 mHz inside the magnetic dip during substorms at the dusk side. The ULF waves are further diagnosed as second harmonic poloidal waves. The 54-67 keV protons in the magnetic dip exhibit oscillations with the same period as ULF waves, providing evidence for drift-bounce resonance. Through finite Larmor radius effects combined with simulations, we determined the ULF waves propagate eastward with an azimuthal wave number of ∼240. The sign of df/dW reveals that the ULF waves are excited and related to the outward radial gradient of proton phase space density.

Abstract:AbstractUltra‐low frequency (ULF) waves can effectively accelerate ring current ions through drift‐bounce resonance. Conventional theories have been developed to understand this resonance since the dawn of the space age, which usually assume ULF waves are quasi‐steady in time. However, ULF waves would experience growth and damping stages in the real magnetosphere, which requires an adjustment of the conventional theories. Here, we attempt to reveal how ions respond to evolving ULF waves. By analyzing an event observed by Van Allen Probe A and reproducing the observations via simulation, we find the phase shift of ion flux oscillation across resonant pitch angles varies with time, when wave growth and damping cannot be neglected. As a result, the inclination angle of stripes in pitch angle spectrogram varies with time, causing “fishbone‐like” pitch angle structures. One should take into account such ion behaviors when considering the role of drift‐bounce resonance in the real magnetosphere.

Abstract:Drift‐resonance wave‐particle interaction is a fundamental collisionless plasma process studied extensively in theory. Using cross‐spectral analysis of electric field, magnetic field, and ion flux data from the Van Allen Probe (Radiation Belt Storm Probes) spacecraft, we present direct evidence identifying the generation of a fundamental mode standing poloidal wave through drift‐resonance interactions in the inner magnetosphere. Intense azimuthal electric field (Eφ) oscillations as large as 10mV/m are observed, associated with radial magnetic field (Br) oscillations in the dawn‐noon sector near but south of the magnetic equator at L∼5. The observed wave period, Eφ/Br ratio and the 90° phase lag between Br and Eφ are all consistent with fundamental mode standing Poloidal waves. Phase shifts between particle fluxes and wave electric fields clearly demonstrate a drift resonance with ∼90 keV ring current ions. The estimated earthward gradient of ion phase space density provides a free energy source for wave generation through the drift‐resonance instability. A similar drift‐resonance process should occur ubiquitously in collisionless plasma systems. One specific example is the “fishbone” instability in fusion plasma devices. In addition, our observations have important implications for the long‐standing mysterious origin of Giant Pulsations.

Abstract:Cyclotron resonance between plasma waves and charged particles is a fundamental and ubiquitous process in the plasma universe, during which the particle’s gyromotion has a constant phase in the wave field to enable a sustained energy exchange. In this classical picture, however, the particle’s angular velocity is determined only by the background magnetic field. Here, we show that the classical condition of cyclotron resonance fails to describe the observations of low-energy particles in resonance with large-amplitude waves, which highlights the roles of the wave field in nonlinearly modifying the resonant picture. The revised scenario of anomalous resonance is then validated by the agreement between test-particle simulations and ultrafast spacecraft measurements, which present in-phase and/or antiphase relationships between the wave magnetic field and ion flux oscillations at energy and pitch-angle ranges incompatible with the classical resonance condition. This revision could significantly affect the wave-particle energy exchange and wave evolution processes.

Abstract:Electromagnetic wave propagation in a nonlinear two-dimensional (2D) periodic medium is investigated by numerically solving four coupled nonlinear differential equations governing wave propagation. It is found that a transmission resonance occurs at a modest level of power when such a system is illuminated with radiation with the frequency in the stop gap of the 2D periodic structure. The system exhibits optical switching from a low-transmission to a high-transmission state as one sweeps through the resonance by increasing the input power. A nonlinear eigenmode is excited within the 2D structure at the switching power. The properties of these localized solutions are also presented and discussed.
