Abstract:In this paper, a speckle recovery algorithm for light through scattering media that can achieve focusing at any position in a large field of view is proposed. The transmission matrix of the scattering medium is measured and binarized by simulating the optical path, and the digital micro-mirror device is used to modulate the binary amplitude of the incident light to achieve single-point or multi-point focusing through the scattering medium. Due to the independence of different focus positions, the algorithm can achieve large field-of-view focusing at any position. The simulation results show that the intensity enhancement factor of the focus position increases with the increase in the sampling number. Compared with the traditional three-step phase shift method, an enhancement ratio of 55Yo can be obtained by the proposed algorithm when the number of sampling is reduced by 1/3, which is 12 Yo higher than that by the three-step phase shift method. The proposed algorithm exhibits great significance for realizing large field-of-view scanning and focusing through the scattering medium, making it applicable in the field of biomedical imaging.

Abstract:Ocean observation system that involves multiple underwater vehicles and seafloor nodes plays an important role in better learning the ocean, where underwater wireless communication is mandatory for massive data interaction. Optical communication that has wide bandwidth and comprehensive working distance is the preferred method compared to acoustic and other methods. However, the presence of directionality makes the optical method difficult to use especially when the transceiver is equipped on a motive vehicle. In this study, an underwater free-space optical communication method of transmitting information is proposed. Characteristics of underwater optical transmission, as well as the photoelectric signal processing and modulation and demodulation algorithms, are studied and modeled. New approach for realizing underwater free-space optical communication is proposed and simulated. A prototype including a free-space optical transmitter and a receiver is developed; tests in different scenarios were carried out, and the results were observed: (1) by using the minimum number of LEDs, the effect of uniform lighting in space is achieved, and the transmitter coverage reaches 160°. (2) When the power of the transmitter is 10 W and the communication rate is 1 Mbps, the maximum communication distance reaches 13 m.

Abstract:This study describes various methods for optical imaging through scattering media based on compression detection. In these methods, low-intensity micro-structured light patterns are launched sequentially onto an object by using a digital micro-mirror device. The corresponding light intensity information is collected and an intensity correlation algorithm is used to recover the information of the object in the scattering media. For each specific sampling reconstruction method, its related systems are listed and its parameter indicators and application scenarios are analyzed. Prospects for the development of single-pixel imaging through scattering media are also discussed.

Abstract:The presence of scattering media limits the quality of images obtained by optical systems. Single-pixel imaging techniques based on structured illumination are highly tolerant to the presence of scattering between the object and the sensor, but very sensitive when the scattering medium is between the light source and the object. This makes it difficult to develop single-pixel imaging techniques for the case of objects immersed in scattering media. We present what we believe to be a new system for imaging objects through inhomogeneous scattering media in an epi-illumination configuration. It works in an adaptive way by combining diffuse optical imaging (DOI) and single pixel imaging (SPI) techniques in two stages. First, the turbid media is characterized by projecting light patterns with an LED array and applying DOI techniques. Second, the LED array is programmed to project light only through the less scattering areas of the media, while simultaneously using a digital micromirror device (DMD) to project light patterns onto the target using Hadamard basis coding functions. With this adaptive technique, we are able to obtain images of targets through two different scattering media with better quality than using conventional illumination. We also show that the system works with fluorescent targets.

Abstract:Imaging objects hidden behind turbid media is of great scientific importance and practical value, which has been drawing a lot of attention recently. However, most of the scattering imaging methods rely on a narrow linewidth of light, limiting their application. A mixture of the scattering light from various spectra blurs the detected speckle pattern, bringing difficulty in phase retrieval. Image reconstruction becomes much worse for dynamic objects due to short exposure times. We here investigate non-invasively recovering images of dynamic objects under white-light irradiation with the multi-frame OTF retrieval engine (MORE). By exploiting redundant information from multiple measurements, MORE recovers the phases of the optical-transfer-function (OTF) instead of recovering a single image of an object. Furthermore, we introduce the number of non-zero pixels (NNP) into MORE, which brings improvement on recovered images. An experimental proof is performed for dynamic objects at a frame rate of 20 Hz under white-light irradiation of more than 300 nm bandwidth.

Abstract:<p>We propose a new approach for optical analog-signal transmission through multi-layer scattering media using single-pixel detector to achieve high peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), and analog signals can be experimentally received with high PSNR through multi-layer scattering media. The proposed approach, experimental observation and optical experimental results are presented that intensity of the propagating wave recorded by using single-pixel detector can directly produce high-PSNR signals through multi-layer scattering media using coherent light source at the receiving end. In our optical experiments, high-PSNR optical transmission is realized in different wave propagation environments, e.g., multi-layer scattering media. The observed phenomenon and the proposed approach provide a new and interesting insight about optical analog-signal transmission through multi-layer scattering media. @ Elsevier.</p>

Abstract:Imaging through a dynamical opaque scattering medium is an almost impossible task, where strong multiple light scattering from moving scatters dynamically prevents imaging formations even with state-of-art techniques like correlation imaging or adaptive optics. Meanwhile, a small number of ballistic photons can still penetrate through but require demanding detection in terms of a ultrashort time gate and high sensitivity. However, visible light is strongly scattered for most of scattering media. Here we experimentally demonstrate a non-invasive coherent imaging scheme based on two-photon absorption capable of imaging through dynamical scattering media with a length equivalent to 28 times mean free paths for single photon transport, where two-photon absorption in a conventional semiconductor photodetector when phase matching is not required works over a wide bandwidth so it can support a fast time gate down to femtosecond level, short enough to distinguish ballistic photons from scattering background, and allows accessing longer wavelengths for deeper penetration. This technique combined with successful optical coherence tomography may pave a new way for imaging through fog, storm, and rain as well as biomedical imaging applications.

Abstract:Realizing high-fidelity optical information transmission through a scattering medium is of vital importance in both science and applications,such as short-range fiber communication and optical encryption.Theoretically,an input wavefront can be reconstructed by inverting the transmission matrix of the scattering medium.However,this deterministic method for retrieving light field information encoded in the wavefront has not yet been experimentally demonstrated.Herein,we dem-onstrate light field information transmission through different scattering media with near-unity fidelity.Multi-dimensional optical information can be delivered through either a multimode fiber or a ground glass without relying on any averaging or approximation,where their Pearson correlation coefficients can be up to 99％.

Abstract:In turbid media, scattering of light scrambles information of the incident beam and represents an obstacle to optical imaging. Noninvasive imaging through opaque layers is challenging for dynamic and wide-field objects due to unreliable image reconstruction processes. We here propose a new perspective to solve these problems: rather than using the full point-spread-function (PSF), the wave distortions in scattering layers can be characterized with only the phase of the optical-transfer-function (OTF, the Fourier transform of PSF), with which diffraction-limit images can be analytically solved. We then develop a method that exploits the redundant information dynamic objects, and can reliably and rapidly recover OTFs' phases within several iterations. It enables not only noninvasive video imaging at 25 ~ 200 Hz of a moving object hidden inside turbid media, but also imaging under weak illumination that is inaccessible with previous methods. Furthermore, by scanning a localized illumination on the object plane, we propose a wide-field imaging approach, with which we demonstrate an application where a photoluminescent sample hidden behind four-layers of opaque polythene films is imaged with a modified multi-photon excitation microscopy setup.

Abstract:Optical imaging through scattering media is a long-standing challenge. Although many approaches have been developed to focus light or image objects through scattering media, they are either invasive, restricted to stationary or slowly-moving media, or require high-resolution cameras and complex algorithms to retrieve the images. Here we introduce a computational imaging technique that can overcome these restrictions by exploiting spatial-temporal encoded patterns (STEP). We present non-invasive imaging through scattering media with a single-pixel photodetector. We show that the method is insensitive to the motions of media. We further demonstrate that our image reconstruction algorithm is much more efficient than correlation-based algorithms for single-pixel imaging, which may allow fast imaging in currently unreachable scenarios.

A Transmission Turbidity Measurement System with Wide Dynamic Range Based on Single Photon Detection Technology

Abstract:A turbidity measurement system based on single photon detection technology has been developed to measure the turbidity of high turbidity water in industrial wastewater. The transmitted light measurement based on the Beer-Lambert principle is used to expand the measurement range. The avalanche photodiode (APD) based highly sensitive single photon detection technology is used to obtain the total intensity of transmitted light and quantize it to the corresponding photon number, which can improve the sensitivity and response speed of the proposed system. In order to maximize the turbidity measurement range and improve accuracy, different incident optical powers are used for the measurement of low turbidity and high turbidity respectively. It has been experimentally verified that the turbidity in the range of 100 NTU to 4000 NTU can be effectively measured when the incident optical power is 10 mw. When the low turbidity is measured, the incident light power should be set as low as 0.3mw, which is suitable for the turbidity measure between 10NTU to 100NTU.The proposed turbidity measurement system has a strong applicability and can be applied to industrial water turbidity measurement.

Abstract:A high-resolution fiber-optic detection system has been developed to measure the wide dynamic range of turbidity. To obtain high-resolution measurement results, a high sensitive single photon detection technique (SPDT) has been used in the system. Based on fiber characteristics, a compact probe structure for fiber-optic integrated transceiver (FITP) is designed to transmitting and collection light signal, which has the capability of detecting turbidity in the narrow workspace. By combining the Beer-Lambert (B-L) law transmission law with single photon counting theory, a novel turbidity measurement theoretical model has been proposed, which shows a good exponential relationship over the whole measurement range from 0.01 to 1000 NTU (Nephelometric Turbidity Units). However, when detecting 0.01-0.1 NTU low turbidity, the experimental results turn into an approximate linear relationship, which good agrees with the proposed theoretical model. Last, some issues about the optimization of light intensity and requiring attention on constructing a practical distributed multi-point water turbidity remote monitoring system in the outdoors are also discussed. It was found that the system can achieve a measurement dynamic range as wide as 50 dB with a resolution better than 0.01 NTU in the range of 0.01-1000 NTU, which is suitable for some specific turbidity measurement in remote and narrow workspace. Abstract:Multiplexing multiple orbital angular momentum (OAM) channels enables high-capacity optical communication. However, optical scattering from ambient microparticles in the atmosphere or mode coupling in optical fibers significantly decreases the orthogonality between OAM channels for demultiplexing and eventually increases crosstalk in communication. Here, we propose a novel scattering-matrix-assisted retrieval technique (SMART) to demultiplex OAM channels from highly scattered optical fields and achieve an experimental crosstalk of -13.8 dB in the parallel sorting of 24 OAM channels after passing through a scattering medium. The SMART is implemented in a self-built data transmission system that employs a digital micromirror device to encode OAM channels and realize reference-free calibration simultaneously, thereby enabling a high tolerance to misalignment. We successfully demonstrate high-fidelity transmission of both gray and color images under scattering conditions at an error rate of <0.08%. This technique might open the door to high-performance optical communication in turbulent environments.

Abstract:High resolution real-time optical imaging through macro-scale scattering medium is challenging in applications. Based on prior spatiotemporal characteristics, existing methods have improved the imaging performance of simple scattering scenarios. Here, we introduce a virtual synthetic aperture model (VSAM) into optical scattering imaging, which focuses on real-time imaging with high resolution and robustness. Our experiments are conducted under the complex scenarios: imaging static or moving targets through acrylic plates or fog. Even though the exposure time is 0.488ms/pixel and average photon counts are less than 4, the proposed method can successfully reconstruct the target located at 1.5m away from acrylic plates or moving with 1m/s. Furthermore, for the fog with one-way optical thickness greater than 6.5 and spatial thickness similar to 50cm, our method is also applicable. The experiments indicate that the proposed method without prior knowledge outperforms the related methods in terms of resolution and scene robustness, which significantly benefits its application.
Optimal Design of a Wide Dynamic Range Turbidity Measurement System Based on Single Photon Technology

Abstract:A wide range turbidity measurement system based on the light scattering method and light transmission method was developed to measure the turbidity of liquids. In order to solve the problem of accuracy attenuation of the light scattering method in the case of measuring high turbidity and the light transmission method in the case of measuring low turbidity, and meet the requirements of large-scale measurement in one system, it is proposed to use the light scattering method to measure low turbidity and the Beer-Lambert law of light transmission method to measure high turbidity methods. Use an avalanche photodiode (APD) to detect the intensity of scattered light or transmitted light, and convert the intensity of light into the number of photons based on single-photon counting technology. In order to obtain a reasonable measurement range of the light scattering method and the light transmission method in this system, a series of experiments were carried out. Under a specific incident light intensity, the experimental results show that the reasonable detection range of the light scattering method is 1 NTU-324 NTU, within this range, the system exhibits good stability. The reasonable detection range of the light transmission method is 325NTU-815NTU, within this range, the system still shows good stability. The widerange turbidity measurement system in this article has broad applicability and can be used to monitor urban drinking water, factory sewage discharge, and other industries.
