Abstract:Motivated by the study of the large-scale geometry of topological groups, we investigate particular families of subsets of topological groups named group ideals. We compare different group ideals in the realm of locally compact groups. In particular, we show that a subset of a locally compact abelian group is relatively compact if and only if it is coarsely bounded. Using this result, we prove that an infinite-dimensional Banach space cannot be embedded into any product of locally compact groups.

Lattices of slowly oscillating functions

Abstract:We show that lattice isomorphisms between the lattices of slowly oscillating functions on chain-connected proper metric spaces induce coarsely equivalent homeomorphisms. This result leads to a Banach-Stone-like theorem for these lattices. Furthermore, we provide a representation theorem that characterizes linear lattice isomorphisms among these lattices.

Abstract:We construct an example of a coarse proximity space that is not induced by any coarse structure. We then show how to "stitch" two coarse proximity spaces with homeomorphic boundaries into one coarse proximity space. Finally, we construct a coarse proximity space that is not induced by any asymptotic resemblance structure.

Abstract:Suppose $X$ is a locally solid lattice ring. It is known that there are three classes of bounded group homomorphisms on $X$ whose topological structures make them again topological rings. In this note, we consider lattice structure on them; more precisely, we show that, under some mild assumptions, they are locally solid lattice rings.

Abstract:We define coarse proximity structures, which are an analog of small-scale proximity spaces in the large-scale context. We show that metric spaces induce coarse proximity structures, and we construct a natural small-scale proximity structure, called the proximity at infinity, on the set of equivalence classes of unbounded subsets of an unbounded metric space given by the relation of having finite Hausdorff distance. We show that this construction is functorial. Consequently, the proximity isomorphism type of the proximity at infinity of an unbounded metric space $X$ is a coarse invariant of $X$.

Lattices in rigid analytic representations

Abstract:For a profinite group $G$ and a rigid analytic space $X$, we study when an $\mathcal O_X(X)$-linear representation $V$ of $G$ admits a lattice, i.e. an $\mathcal O_{\mathcal X}(\mathcal X)$-linear model for a suitable formal model $\mathcal X$ of $X$ in the sense of Berthelot. We give a positive answer, under mild assumptions, when $X$ is a ``wide open'' space. As a consequence, we are able to describe explicit open rational subdomains of $X$ over which $V$ is constant after reduction modulo a power of $p$. We give applications in two different directions. First, we prove explicit results on the reduction modulo powers of $p$ of sheaves of crystalline and semistable representations of fixed weight. Second, we focus on the sheaves of Galois representations on eigenvarieties, which are important examples of wide open spaces thanks to a result of Bellaïche and Chenevier. We give an application of our main results to the pseudorepresentation carried by the Coleman--Mazur eigencurve, which can be made explicit whenever equations for a rational subdomain of the eigencurve are given.

Abstract:If $K$ is a compact Hausdorff space so that the Banach lattice $C(K)$ is isometrically lattice isomorphic to a dual of some Banach lattice, then $C(K)$ can be decomposed as the $\ell^\infty$-direct sum of the carriers of a maximal singular family of order continuous functionals on $C(K)$. In order to generalise this result to the vector lattice $C(X)$ of continuous, real valued functions on a realcompact space $X$, we consider direct and inverse limits in suitable categories of vector lattices. We develop a duality theory for such limits and apply this theory to show that $C(X)$ is lattice isomorphic to the order dual of some vector lattice $F$ if and only if $C(X)$ can be decomposed as the inverse limit of the carriers of all order continuous functionals on $C(X)$. In fact, we obtain a more general result: A Dedekind complete vector lattice $E$ is perfect if and only if it is lattice isomorphic to the inverse limit of the carriers of a suitable family of order continuous functionals on $E$. A number of other applications are presented, including a decomposition theorem for order dual spaces in terms of spaces of Radon measures.

Order continuity and regularity on vector lattices and on lattices of continuous functions

Abstract:We give several characterizations of order continuous vector lattice homomorphisms between Archimedean vector lattices. We reduce the proofs of some of the equivalences to the case of composition operators between vector lattices of continuous functions, and so we obtain a characterization of order continuity of such operators. Motivated by this, we investigate various properties of the sublattices of the space $C\left(X\right)$, where $X$ is a Tychonoff topological space. We also obtain several characterizations of a regular sublattice of a vector lattice, and show that the closure of a regular sublattice of a Banach lattice is also regular.

Abstract:When $\mathbb{Z}^d$ is represented as a finite disjoint union of translated integer sublattices, the translated sublattices must possess some special properties. Such a representation is called a \emph{lattice tiling}. We develop a theoretical framework, based on multiple residues and dual groups, to provide a set of necessary and sufficient conditions for such a lattice tiling to exist. We also investigate the question of when a lattice tiling must possess at least two translated sublattices which are translates of one another.

Abstract:Lattices and periodic point sets are well known objects from discrete geometry. They are also used in crystallography as one of the models of atomic structure of periodic crystals. In this paper we study the embedding properties of spaces of lattices and periodic point sets equipped with optimal bijection metrics (i.e., bottleneck and Euclidean bottleneck metrics). We focus our treatment on embeddings into Hilbert space. On one hand this is motivated by modern data analysis, which is mostly based on statistical approaches developed on Euclidean on Hilbert spaces, hence such embeddings play a major role in applied pipelines. On the other hand there is a well-established methodology related to such questions in coarse geometry, arising from the work on the Novikov conjecture. The main results of this paper provide different conditions, under which the spaces of lattices or periodic point sets are Lipschitz or coarsely (non)embeddable into Hilbert space. The various conditions are phrased in terms of density, packing radius, covering radius, the cardinality of the motif, and the diameter of the unit cell.

Abstract:. We introduce an asymptotic coarse structure on proper metric spaces and study the associated C * -algebras and assembly maps. We establish an asymptotic Lipschitz homotopy invariance theorem for the K -theory of these C * -algebras and the K -homology of the metric space, and show that the assembly map is an isomorphism over an asymptotically scaleable space.
An Invitation to Coarse Groups

Abstract:In this monograph we lay the foundation for a theory of coarse groups and coarse actions. Coarse groups are group objects in the category of coarse spaces, and can be thought of as sets with operations that satisfy the group axioms "up to uniformly bounded error". In the first part of this work, we develop the theory of coarse homomorphisms, quotients, and subgroups, and prove that coarse versions of the Isomorphism Theorems hold true. We also initiate the study of coarse actions and show how they relate to the fundamental observation of Geometric Group Theory. In the second part we explore a selection of specialized topics, such as the study of coarse group structures on set-groups, groups of coarse automorphisms and spaces of controlled maps. Here the main aim is to show how the theory of coarse groups connects with classical subjects. These include: number theory; the study of bi-invariant metrics on groups; quasimorphisms and stable commutator length; ${\rm Out}(F_n)$; topological group actions.

Abstract:In point-free topology, one abstracts the poset of open subsets of a topological space, by replacing it with a frame (a complete lattice, where meet distributes over arbitrary join). In this paper we propose a similar abstraction of the posets of connected subsets in various space-like structures. The analogue of a frame is called a chainmail, which is defined as a poset admitting joins of its mails, i.e., subsets having a lower bound. The main result of the paper is an equivalence between a subcategory of the category of complete join-semilattices and the category of chainmails.

Abstract:Let L be a truncated Archimedean vector lattice whose truncation is denoted by *. In a recent paper, we proved that there exists a locally compact Hausdorff space X such that L is a lattice isomorphic with a truncated vector lattice of functions in C ∞ ( X ) whose truncation is provided by meet with some characteristic function on X . This representation, no matter how interesting it is, has a major drawback, namely, C ∞ ( X ) need not be a vector lattice, unless X is extremally disconnected. The main purpose of this paper is to remedy this shortcoming by proving that, indeed, an extremally disconnected locally compact space X can be found such that L can be seen as an order dense vector sublattice of C ∞ ( X ) whose truncation is provided, again, by meet with some characteristic function on X .

The structure of approximate lattices in linear groups

Abstract:Approximate lattices are aperiodic generalisations of lattices of locally compact groups that were first studied in seminal work of Yves Meyer. They are defined as those uniformly discrete approximate subgroups (symmetric subsets stable under multiplication up to a finite error) of locally compact groups that have finite co-volume. Meyer showed that approximate lattices of Euclidean spaces (a.k.a. Meyer sets) are related to lattices in higher-dimensional Euclidean spaces via the cut-and-project construction. A fundamental challenge of the theory of approximate lattices is to extend Meyer's theorem beyond Euclidean spaces. Our main result provides a complete structure theorem for approximate lattices valid in all linear algebraic groups over local fields and their finite products, in particular providing the most general extension of Meyer's theorem to date. Our proof relies on an extension of a theorem of Lubotzky--Mozes--Raghunathan to approximate lattices in S-adic semi-simple groups, a notion of cohomology tailored to the study of approximate subgroups, a universality statement complementing a recent result of Hrushovski and a generalisation of a result of Burger and Monod about bounded cohomology of lattices.

Abstract:A lattice $\Lambda$ is said to be an extension of a sublattice $L$ of smaller rank if $L$ is equal to the intersection of $\Lambda$ with the subspace spanned by $L$. The goal of this paper is to initiate a systematic study of the geometry of lattice extensions. We start by proving the existence of a small-determinant extension of a given lattice, and then look at successive minima and covering radius. To this end, we investigate extensions (within an ambient lattice) preserving the successive minima of the given lattice, as well as extensions preserving the covering radius. We also exhibit some interesting arithmetic properties of deep holes of planar lattices.
