Abstract:Recent theoretical prediction and experimental confirmation of cage configurations for Au clusters have stimulated considerable interest in finding novel gold clusters exhibiting high stability. We use a dual relationship between gold antifullerene cages with all triangular faces and carbon fullerenes with all degree 3 vertices to construct a large number of Au50 antifullerene cages by omnicapping and dualization procedures. Among these cages we find a new D6d cage as the lowest-energy configuration of Au50. The unusual stability of this new Au50 cage is associated with spherical aromaticity and sp-d hybridization.
Exploring Stability of 32-Atom Gold–silver Mixed Clusters

Abstract:In the frame of density functional theory, the lowest energy structures of Au32−nAgn (n=1–31) clusters are discussed by considering the hollow cage-like and space-filling structures. The calculated results show that the hollow cage-like and space-filling structures are competitive in energy. For Au32−nAgn clusters with sizes n=1, 2, 5–8, 11, 12, 16, and 18, the hollow cage-like structures are their lowest energy structures. And for the clusters with other sizes, the space-filling structures are the corresponding lowest energy structures. In addition, the Au31Ag cluster with the hollow cage-like configuration is found to be highly stable in structure, and even more stable than the icosahedral Au32 cluster. It believes that the experimentalists are interested in the finding above.

Abstract:Revealing the stability and structural patterns is important for precisely synthesizing or assembling ligand protected nanoclusters, and even their applications as functional nanomaterials. Investigations on structural evolutional patterns and structural stability are very challenging, because structures change with the nanocluster size and the structural stability depends on both the electron structures of cores and ligand type. Herein, we propose a hybrid superatom network (hSAN) model to understand the stability of some gold nanoclusters with different kinds of ligands. In this model, 4c-2e superatom Au-4 can form conjugated superatom networks by vertex sharing, and ligands further connect the conjugated superatom networks together to form a bigger complex network, i.e. a hSAN. The stability of the clusters, including [Au-24(Cu CPh)(14)(PPh3)(4)](2+), Au-28(S-c-C6H11)(20), Au-36(SCH2Ph-tBu)(8)Cl-20, Au-40(O-MBT)(24) and Au-52(TBBT)(32) can be explained uniformly by the hSAN model. Beyond that, a new heuristic structural pattern named the Au-13 topological rule is proposed. In the light of this heuristic rule, every Au-7 bi-tetrahedral kernel is included in an Au-13 structure with quasi-O-h symmetry, i.e. as long as the Au-7 bi-tetrahedral kernel is formed, it will be surrounded by six Au atoms to form an Au-13 structure topologically. According to this understanding, a new nanocluster [Au-44(Cu=CH3)(26)(PCH3)(4)](2+) and a new nanowire with the structural evolutional formula [Au((20n+4))(Cu CH3)((12n+2))(PCH3)(4)](2+) (n = 1, 2, 3, 4,.) are predicted. Both the understanding of the stability and the structure rule are free from the type of ligand, and will be useful for the structural predictions and determinations of ligand protected gold nanoclusters.

Abstract:Total structure determination of a ligand-protected gold nanocluster, Au144 , has been successfully carried out. The composition of title nanocluster is Au144 (C≡CAr)60 (1; Ar=2-FC6 H4 -). The cluster 1 exhibits a quasi-spherical Russian doll-like architecture, comprising a Au54 two-shelled Mackay icosahedron (Au12 @Au42 ), which is further enclosed by a Au60 anti-Mackay icosahedral shell. The Au114 kernel is enwrapped by thirty linear ArC≡C-Au-C≡CAr staple motifs. The absorption spectrum of 1 shows two bands at 560 and 620 nm. This spectrum is distinctly different from that of thiolated Au144 , which was predicted to have an almost identical metal kernel and very similar ligands arrangement in 1. These facts indicate the molecule-like behavior of 1 and significant involvement of ligands in the electronic structure of 1. The cluster 1 is hitherto the largest coinage metal nanocluster with atomically precise molecular structure in the alkynyl family. The work not only addresses the concern of structural information of Au144 , which had been long-pursued, but also provides an interesting example showing ligand effects on the optical properties of ligand protected metal nanoclusters.

Abstract:Abstract Water-soluble and biocompatible protein-protected gold nanoclusters (Au NCs) hold great promise for numerous applications. However, design and precise regulation of their structure at an atomic level remain challenging. Herein, we have engineered and constructed a gold clustering site at the 4-fold symmetric axis channel of the apo-ferritin cage. Using a series of X-ray crystal structures, we evaluated the stepwise accumulation process of Au ions into the cage and the formation of a multinuclear Au cluster in our designed cavity. We also disclosed the role of key residues in the metal accumulation process. X-ray crystal structures in combination with quantum chemical (QC) calculation revealed a unique Au clustering site with up to 12 Au atoms positions in the cavity. Moreover, the structure of the gold nanocluster was precisely tuned by the dosage of the Au precursor. As the gold concentration increases, the number of Au atoms position at the clustering site increases from 8 to 12, and a structural rearrangement was observed at a higher Au concentration. Furthermore, the binding affinity order of the four Au binding sites on apo-ferritin was unveiled with a stepwise increase of Au precursor concentration.

Structures of Neutral and Anionic Au(16) Clusters Revisited.

Abstract:Using the density functional theory and generalized gradient approximation for exchange and correlation potential, we have performed an extensive search to obtain the ground state geometries of both neutral and anionic Au(16) cluster by considering over 200 low lying isomers. For the neutral Au(16) cluster we found a new T(d) compact structure to be the lowest energy configuration, which is nearly degenerate in total energy with the previously reported C(s) and C(2v) noncage structures. While the Au(16) (-) cluster, in agreement with previous calculations, is found to have a T(d) hollow cage structure, an isomer with a planar structure is found to be lower in energy. The photoelectron spectra from all the nine lowest energy isomers are calculated and compared with experiment to determine the possibility of their existence. Molecular dynamics simulations on both neutral and anionic Au(16) clusters are carried out to provide further insight into the origin and stability of these structures. Our comprehensive study allows us to answer the following questions: (1) Why are the adiabatic and vertical detachment energies of Au(16) cluster nearly identical when the lowest energy structures of the anion and the neutral are so very different? (2) How is Au(16) (-) formed? Is it born neutral and the extra electron attaches afterwards or is it born anionic and the structure evolves during the electron attachment process?

Abstract:Taking Au38 as a prototype, hollow cages with different arrangements and those stuffed by a different number of atoms have been studied by using the scalar relativistic density functional theory. The global minimum structures of Au 38 i (i = 0, ±1) are found to exhibit low symmetry core-shell structures: Au38 and Au 38 − feature a four-atom tetrahedral core and Au 38 + possesses a six-atom octahedron core. For the neutral Au38, the tube-like structure has the highest chemical stability. The obtained information forms the basis for future chemisorption studies to unravel the catalytic effects of gold nanoparticles.
Structural Growth Sequences and Electronic Properties of Gold Clusters: Highly Symmetric Tubelike Cages

Abstract:The structural growth sequences and electronic properties of Aun (n=14+6m and m=0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 10) clusters have been investigated using the DMol3 DFT package. The structures of Aun (n=20, 26, 32, 38, 44, 50, and 74) are obtained in turn by directly adding a gold ring of six atoms on the tubelike configuration of Au14 cluster. These tubelike gold clusters are all highly symmetric cages. Their average atomic coordination numbers, nearest-neighbor distances and average tube radius are very near. The average binding energies of Aun clusters increase substantially with size n. Au14, Au26, and Au44 have larger energy gaps and ionization potentials than their neighboring clusters. During the studied clusters, Au74 cluster has the highest average energy, ionization potential and the lowest electron affinity, which are corresponding to its highest structural and chemical stability, respectively.

Abstract:New low-energy atomic structures and properties of medium-size gold nanoparticles (Au33-42) are studied, where the atomic positions of gold atoms are obtained on the basis of the generic formulation of shell and core concept. Hollow cage, tube-like, double-layered flat, fcc-like, and close-packed configurations are predicted. Relativistic density functional theory optimization indicated that low-symmetry stuffed configurations are all lower in energy than the others. Further analysis of the optimized structures of Au33-42 nanoparticles shows that these gold cores are all four-atom tetrahedral structures and similar to each other; only the number and positions of gold atoms at the surface of gold core are different. Compared with structure and electronic properties, Au33-42 nanoparticles have different structure stabilities and chemical activities. But they are all hybridizations of sp and d electrons. The obtained information forms the basis for future chemisorption studies to unravel the catalytic effects of gold nanoparticles.

Abstract:We have investigated the lowest-energy structures and electronic properties of the ${\mathrm{Au}}_{n}(n=2--20)$ clusters based on density-functional theory with local density approximation. The small ${\mathrm{Au}}_{n}$ clusters adopt planar structures up to $n=6.$ Flat cage structures are preferred in the range of $n=10--14$ and a structural transition from flat-cage-like structure to compact near-spherical structure is found around $n=15.$ The most stable configurations obtained for ${\mathrm{Au}}_{13}$ and ${\mathrm{Au}}_{19}$ clusters are amorphous instead of icosahedral or fcc like, while the electronic density of states sensitively depends on the cluster geometry. Abstract:Thiolate-protected gold nanoclusters (denoted as Au m (SR) n or Au n L m ) have received extensive attention both experimentally and theoretically. Understanding the growth mode of the Au4 unit in Au m (SR) n is of great significance for experimental synthesis and the search for new gold clusters. In this work, we first build six clusters of Au7(AuCl2)3, Au12(AuCl2)4, Au16(AuCl2)6, Au22(AuCl2)6, and Au30(AuCl2)6 with the Au4 unit as the basic building blocks. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that these newly designed clusters have high structural and electronic stabilities. Based on chemical bonding analysis, the electronic structures of these clusters follow the superatom network (SAN) model. Inspired by the cluster structures, we further predicted an Au4 two-dimensional (2D) monolayer and a three-dimensional (3D) crystal using graphene and diamond as templates, respectively. The computational results demonstrate that the two structures have high dynamic, thermal, and mechanical stabilities, and both structures exhibit metallic properties according to the band structures calculated at the HSE06 level. The chemical bonding analysis by the solid-state natural density partitioning (SSAdNDP) method indicates that they are superatomic crystals assembled by two electron Au4 - superatoms. With this construction strategy, the new bonding pattern and properties of Au n L m are studied and the structure types of gold are enriched.
Structure, Stability, And Electronic Property Of Carbon-Doped Gold Clusters Aunc- (N=1-10): A Density Functional Theory Study

Abstract:The equilibrium geometric structures, relative stabilities, and electronic properties of AunC- and Au(n+)1(-) (n = 1-10) clusters are systematically investigated using density functional theory with hyper-generalized gradient approximation. The optimized geometries show that one Au atom capped on Aun-1C- clusters is a dominant growth pattern for AunC- clusters. In contrast to Au-n+1(-) clusters, AunC- clusters are most stable in a quasi-planar or three-dimensional structure because C doping induces the local non-planarity while the rest of the structure continues to grow in a planar mode, resulting in an overall non-2D configuration. The relative stability calculations show that the impurity C atom can significantly enhance the thermodynamic stability of pure gold clusters. Moreover, the effect of C atom on the Au-n(-) host decreases with the increase of cluster size. The HOMO-LUMO gap curves show that the interaction of the C atom with Au-n(-) clusters improves the chemical stability of pure gold clusters, except for Au-3(-) and Au-4(-) clusters. In addition, a natural population analysis shows that the charges in corresponding AunC- clusters transfer from the Au-n(-) host to the C atom. Meanwhile, a natural electronic configuration analysis also shows that the charges mainly transfer between the 2s and 2p orbitals within the C atom. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.
DFT Study of Charge Effect on the Odd-even Oscillatory Behavior in Stabilities for Gold Clusters

Abstract:The comparative study of charge effect on the size-dependence stabilities of gold clusters Aunz(n = 2~12, z = 0/±1) in gas phase is performed at the M06-L/Lanl2 dz level. The lowest-energy structures charged by –1, 0 and +1 are optimized. The result shows that the geometries of the clusters with over 7 atoms tend to be cake-like. From the two- to three-dimensional geometries, the oscillatory behaviors are exhibited in the structural and electronic properties with the most pronounced in energy gap. The amplitude for the positive clusters is bigger than both the neutral and negative clusters. The neutral clusters with even number of even-coordinated atoms are more stable than the neighbors with odd number of even-coordinated atoms, as is completely reversed for the charged clusters. The oscillatory behaviors for the charged clusters are opposite to that for the neutral clusters, as is attributed to the electron-paired effect.

Abstract:An atomically resolved gold nanocluster Au99(C≡CC6H3-2,4-F2)40 (Au99) with an unusual 59 valence electrons has been synthesized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that its Au79 kernel is a Au49 Marks decahedron capped by two Au15 units. The surface structure of Au99 consists of 20 linear Au(C≡CR)2 staples. Intercluster interactions are observed between these D5 symmetric clusters. The existence of an unpaired electron is verified by magnetic measurement. Interestingly, this open-shell gold cluster Au99 stays intact in toluene solution at 80 °C for more than a week, and it has good charging-discharging capability under electrochemical conditions. The compact ligand shell protection around the symmetric core accounts for the high stability. This work suggests that geometric factors may play a crucial role in determining the stability of a metal nanocluster, even though the cluster has an open-shell electronic structure.

Stabilizing a 22 Karat Nanogolden Cage

Abstract:Since the discovery of C60 fullerene, considerable efforts have been devoted to find other elements with similar hollow cage structures. However, search for hollow metallic cages with a diameter similar to that of C60 fullerene has been elusive. We describe a procedure for the rational design of metallic cages by suitably choosing their size, composition, and charge state. A 22 karat nanogolden cage with a diameter of about 8.5 Å and consisting of 12 Al and 20 Au atoms is found to be metastable, which can be stabilized by embedding a Mn4 cluster. In contrast to bulk Mn, which is antiferromagnetic, and isolated Mn4 cluster, which is ferromagnetic with a giant magnetic moment of 20μB, the Mn4@Al12Au20 endohedral complex exhibits magnetic bistability with 0μB and 14μB configurations being energetically nearly degenerate. These results, based on density functional theory, open the door to design a novel class of endohedral complexes with possible applications.

Synthesis and structural determination of multidentate 2,3-dithiol-stabilized Au clusters

Abstract:Interface bond structure, in addition to the well-known size and shape quantum confinement effects, is another factor that affects the properties of nanomaterials that is less known and studied. Inspired by the thiol-bridging "staple" motif (RS-Au-SR, Jadzinsky; et al. Science 2007, 318, 430.) discovered from monothiol-stabilized gold nanoclusters, dithiol ligand 2,3-dimercaptopropanesulfonic (DMPS) acid has been employed to synthesize dithiol-protected Au clusters (DTCs). The structure and property of the Au DTCs are studied to probe two effects: the entropy gain of dithiol over monothiol ligand protection and the constraint to the formation of the thiol bridging surface bonding. The hydrodynamic sizes of Au DTCs were estimated by diffusion nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The size distribution, Au core plus ligands on solid support, was confirmed by atomic force microscope (AFM) imaging. Size-dependent optical properties were observed. Au(4) clusters at high purity, characterized by mass spectrometry and organic-metal ratio confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), display a characteristic absorbance band at 282 nm. The proton chemical environments as well as Au-S bond information of the Au(4) cluster were fully elucidated by (13)C-(1)H heteronuclear single-quantum coherence (HSQC) in conjunction with other two-dimensional (2D) NMR techniques. The Au-S bonding was further studied in thiol stretching by infrared and Au(4f) and S(2p) electrons by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). One possible structure of the Au(4) cluster has been proposed that needs further theoretical studies or single-crystal confirmation.

Abstract:The structures and stabilities of gold ion-doped argon clusters Au+Arn (n=1–6) are investigated by using the quantum-chemical theory. In the lowest-lying geometries, the argon atoms tend to arrange around the central gold ions. Comparatively stable complexes are considered to consist of four and six argon atoms. The octahedral Au+Ar6 is the first shell closure of title clusters. The most stable structure of Au+Ar4 is distortedly tetrahedral rather than planar.

Abstract:The geometries, stabilities, and electronic properties of Au12M (M=Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl) clusters were systematically investigated by using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). For each cluster, the average binding energy, the embedding energy, the vertical ionization potential, the energy gap between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO), the natural charge population analysis, and the natural bond orbital analysis (NBO) were calculated. The lowest-energy structures of Au12M (M=Na, Mg, Al) clusters are cages with M encapsulated in the center, while structures of Au12M (M=Si, P, S, Cl) clusters are pyramidal with M at the apex. The Au12S cluster, having the full closed-shells, is the most stable. Furthermore, from the natural population analysis, it follows that charges transfer from Au to M in all the clusters. The NBO and HOMO analyses reveal that hybridization occurs between the Au s-d orbitals and the M p orbitals.

Abstract:The equilibrium geometries and electronic properties of Au n Al,up to n = 13,have been systematically investigated using the density functional theory.The results show that,for the Au n Al clusters,two patterns are identified.Pattern one（n = 2,3,8）,the lowest-energy geometries prefer two-dimensional structures.Pattern two（n = 4 7,9-13）,the lowest-energy geometries prefer three-dimensional structures.According to the analysis of the binding energy and the fragmentation energy,Au n Al clusters with odd n are found to be more stable than those with even n.The same trend of alternation can be illuminated according to the computational results in the HOMO-LUMO gap,the ionization potential,and the electron affinities.The Al atom not only changes the structures of pure gold clusters,but also enhances their stabilities.NBO analysis indicates 6s orbital of Au atom hybridizes with 3p orbital of Al atom.
