Abstract:Hypertension contributes to half of the coronary heart disease and almost two-thirds of the cerebrovascular disease burdens.1 Studies have demonstrated that various kinds of blood pressure (BP) variability are an independent risk of the progression of hypertensive organ damage and cerebrovascular and cardiovascular events as well as cognitive dysfunction, independently from absolute BP levels.2–4 Drugs that favorably affect mean BP and reduce BP variability are desirable. However, only calcium antagonists have been shown to reduce BP variability (visitto-visit as well as 24-hour), while b-blockers, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, and angiotensin II receptor antagonists seem to exhibit opposite effects.5–8 CG granule (CG, or Yangxue Qingnao granule; Tianjin Tasly Pharmaceutical, Co, Ltd, Tianjin, China) is a polyherbal medicine. CG contains 11 commonly used herbs. It is established according to traditional Chinese medicine to tonify blood, promote blood circulation, and ease symptoms of the head, including headache, dizziness, vertigo, and insomnia, according to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine. CG was approved by the Chinese health authorities in 1996 for headaches, insomnia, vertigo, and dizziness due to blood deficiency and excessive liver yang, a pattern of symptoms defined by traditional Chinese medicine and common in hypertensive patients. Because of its blood pressure–lowering effects, CG is also used to treat hypertension.9 We hypothesized that Cerebralcare (CG) granule, a Chinese medical compound, could be beneficial to BP variability. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that CG leads to a significant reduction of abnormal BP variability and instability in hypertensive patients on standard antihypertensive medications.
