Abstract:Variational calculus with gradient-type variations has often been neglected, although it proves to be suitable for certain concrete problems governed by several evolution variables. These kinds of variations lead to Euler–Lagrange partial differential equations controlled by the right-hand member. In this context, we also introduce anti-trace Euler–Lagrange partial differential equations that are suitable for some innovative ideas. Also, some applications are provided for the theoretical results derived in the paper.

Abstract:Discrete-time optimal control problems are a crucial type of control problems that deal with a dynamic system evolving in discrete time-steps. This paper introduces a new technique for solving linear discrete-time optimal control problems with state delays, applicable to both finite and infinite time horizons. Our method employs a Riccati matrix equation, optimizing control strategies and ensuring system stability through bounded control inputs. We adopt a Bolza problem for the performance index, which guides the classification of control issues. The technique simplifies problems into manageable Riccati matrix equations using the Euler-Lagrange equations and Pontryagin maximum principle, ensuring stability and necessary condition compliance. The paper validates the approach with numerical examples from quantum mechanics and classical physics, demonstrating its practicality and potential for broader application.

Abstract:We deal with direct and inverse problems of the calculus of variations on arbitrary time scales. Firstly, using the Euler-Lagrange equation and the strengthened Legendre condition, we give a general form for a variational functional to attain a local minimum at a given point of the vector space. Furthermore, we provide a necessary condition for a dynamic integro-differential equation to be an Euler-Lagrange equation (Helmholtz's problem of the calculus of variations on time scales). New and interesting results for the discrete and quantum settings are obtained as particular cases. Finally, we consider very general problems of the calculus of variations given by the composition of a certain scalar function with delta and nabla integrals of a vector valued field.

Abstract:The paper suggests a Hamiltonian formulation for delay ordinary differential equations (DODEs). Such equations are related to DODEs with a Lagrangian formulation via a delay analog of the Legendre transformation. The Hamiltonian delay operator identity is established. It states the relationship for the invariance of a delay Hamiltonian functional, appropriate delay variational equations, and their conserved quantities. The identity is used to formulate a Noether-type theorem, which provides first integrals for Hamiltonian DODEs with symmetries. The relationship between the invariance of the delay Hamiltonian functional and the invariance of the delay variational equations is also examined. Several examples illustrate the theoretical results.

Abstract:In this article, we consider a system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) of second order with two variable time delays. We obtain new conditions for uniform ultimate bounded (UUB) solutions of the considered system. The technique of the proof is based on the Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional (LKF) method using a new LKF. The main result of this article extends and improves a recent result for ODEs of second order with a constant delay to a more general system of ODEs of second order with two variable time delays. In this particular case, we also give a numerical example to verify the application of the main result of this article.

Abstract:A Lagrangian formalism for variational second-order delay ordinary differential equations (DODEs) is developed. The Noether operator identity for a DODE is established, which relates the invariance of a Lagrangian function with the appropriate variational equations and the conserved quantities. The identity is used to formulate Noether-type theorems that give the first integrals for DODE with symmetries. Relations between the invariance of the variational second-order DODEs and the invariance of the Lagrangian functions are also analyzed. Several examples illustrate the theoretical results.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a new class of delay differential variational inequalities. Delay differential variational inequalities with initial conditions have been already introduced and studied in literatures. The novelty of this work is to consider such problems with boundary conditions. In the first step, we prove a result on the existence of solutions for delay differential variational inequalities with boundary conditions. In the second step, we study the numerical aspect of the problem, where a numerical scheme is considered and the convergence analysis for the approach is provided. As an application, we consider dynamic Nash equilibrium with time delay. A numerical illustration is provided by considering the problem of optimal allocation of distributed generations.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to establish the equivalence between Lagrangian and classical formulations for the stochastic incompressible Euler equations, the proof is based in Ito-Wentzell-Kunita formula and stochastic analysis techniques. Moreover, we prove a local existence result for the Lagrangian formulation in suitable Sobolev Spaces.

Abstract:We consider the Hamilton-Jacobi equation associated with a calculus of variations problem in which the functional to minimize comprises an end-point cost function and an integral term involving a nonautonomous Lagrangian. We assume that the Lagrangian is merely Borel measurable, has a bounded variation behaviour w.r.t. the time variable, and satisfies growth conditions which are weaker than superlinearity. For this class of problems we extend (to the nonautonomous case) the regularity and existence (of generalized solution to the Hamilton-Jacobi equation, in terms of Dini/contingent derivatives) results obtained by Dal Maso and Frankowska in earlier work for autonomous Lagrangians, and we show that the value function is also a proximal solution. Imposing some additional assumptions (such as convexity and superlinearity in ), we also provide a uniqueness result for Dini/contingent solutions.

Abstract:In this paper, we derive sufficient conditions ensuring the existence of a weak solution $u$ for a tempered fractional Euler-Lagrange equations $$ \frac{\partial L}{\partial x}(u,{^C}\mathbb{D}_{a^+}^{\alpha, \sigma} u, t) + \mathbb{D}_{b^-}^{\alpha, \sigma}\left(\frac{\partial L}{\partial y}(u, {^C}\mathbb{D}_{a^+}^{\alpha, \sigma}u, t) \right) = 0 $$ on a real interval $[a,b]$ and ${^C}\mathbb{D}_{a^+}^{\alpha, \sigma}, \mathbb{D}_{b^-}^{\alpha, \sigma}$ are the left and right Caputo and Riemann-Liouville tempered fractional derivatives respectively of order $\alpha$. Furthermore, we study a fractional tempered version of Noether theorem and we provide a very explicit expression of a constant of motion in terms of symmetry group and Lagrangian for fractional problems of calculus of variations. Finally we study a mountain pass type solution of the cited problem.

Abstract:In this work we propose a new and more general approach to the calculus of variations on time scales that allows to obtain, as particular cases, both delta and nabla results. More precisely, we pose the problem of minimizing or maximizing the composition of delta and nabla integrals with Lagrangians that involve directional derivatives. Unified Euler-Lagrange necessary optimality conditions, as well as sufficient conditions under appropriate convexity assumptions, are proved. We illustrate presented results with simple examples.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the following Euler-Lagrange system \[ \frac{d}{dt}\mathcal{L}_v(t,u(t),\dot u(t))=\mathcal{L}_x(t,u(t),\dot u(t))\quad \text{ for a.e. }t\in[-T,T],\quad u(-T)=u(T), \] where Lagrangian is given by $\mathcal{L}=F(t,x,v)+V(t,x)+\langle f(t), x\rangle$, growth conditions are determined by an anisotropic G-function and some geometric conditions at infinity. We consider two cases: with and without forcing term $f$. Using a general version of the Mountain Pass Theorem and Ekeland's variational principle we prove the existence of at least two nontrivial periodic solutions in an anisotropic Orlicz-Sobolev space.

Abstract:In this paper, a nonlinear viscoelastic Kirchhoff equation in a bounded domain with a time-varying delay term and logarithmic nonlinearity in the weakly nonlinear internal feedback is considered, where the global and local existence of solutions in suitable Sobolev spaces by means of the energy method combined with Faedo-Galerkin procedure is proved with respect to the condition of the weight of the delay term in the feedback and the weight of the term without delay and the speed of delay. Furthermore, a general stability estimate using some properties of convex functions is given. These results extend and improve many results in the literature.

Abstract:This note states and proves an integral representation formula of the ``variation-of-constant'' type for continuous solutions of linear non-autonomous difference delay systems, in terms of a Lebesgue-Stieltjes integral involving a fundamental solution and the initial data of the system. This gives a precise and correct version of several formulations appearing in the literature, and extends them to the time-varying case. This is of importance for further stability studies of various kinds of delay systems.

Abstract:We study the Schwarzian derivative from a variational viewpoint. Firstly we show that the Schwarzian derivative defines a first integral of the Euler--Lagrange equation of a second order Lagrangian. Secondly, we show that the Schwarzian derivative itself is the Euler--Lagrange operator for an appropriately chosen class of variations.

Abstract:We develop an elementary method to give a Lipschitz estimate for the minimizers in the problem of Herglotz' variational principle proposed in \cite{CCWY2018} in the time-dependent case. We deduce Erdmann's condition and the Euler-Lagrange equation separately under different sets of assumptions, by using a generalized du Bois-Reymond lemma. As an application, we obtain a representation formula for the viscosity solution of the Cauchy problem for the Hamilton-Jacobi equation \begin{align*} D_tu(t,x)+H(t,x,D_xu(t,x),u(t,x))=0 \end{align*} and study the related Lax-Oleinik evolution.
