Abstract:Some new developments in nonlinear stochastic structural dynamics recently made by the present author and his co-workers are reviewed. A nonlinear structure under random loading is modeled as a stochastically excited and dissipated Hamiltonian system of finite degree-of-freedom (DOF). The functional form of the exact stationary solution, the equivalent nonlinear system and the stochastic averaging equations of a stochastically excited and dissipated Hamiltonian system are constructed based on the integrability and resonance of the associated Hamiltonian system, and thus the response of the system is predicted. The stochastic stability, stochastic bifurcation and optimal nonlinear feedback control of the system are treated by using the stochastic averaging method for quasi-Hamiltonian systems. It is pointed out that the theory is promising and deserves further development.

Abstract:In order to reconcile the wave-function collapse in quantum mechanics with the finiteness of signals' propagation in general relativity, we delve into a stochastic version of the Ricci flow and study its non-relativistic limit in presence of matter. We hence derive the Diósi-Penrose collapse model for the wave-function of a quantum gas. The procedure entails additional parameters with respect to phenomenological models hitherto accounted for, including the temperature of the gas and the cosmological constant, in turn related to the stochastic gravitational noise responsible for the collapse.

Abstract:We consider the effect of replacing in stochastic differential equations leading to the dynamical collapse of the state vector, white-noise stochastic processes with nonwhite ones. We prove that such a modification can be consistently performed without altering the most interesting features of the previous models. One of the reasons to discuss this matter derives from the desire of being allowed to deal with physical stochastic fields, such as the gravitational one, which cannot give rise to white noises. From our point of view, the most relevant motivation for the approach we propose here derives from the fact that in relativistic models intractable divergences appear as a consequence of the white nature of the noises. Therefore, one can hope that resorting to nonwhite noises, one can overcome such a difficulty. We investigate stochastic equations with nonwhite noises, we discuss their reduction properties and their physical implications. Our analysis has a precise interest not only for the above-mentioned subject but also for the general study of dissipative systems and decoherence.

Abstract:International Journal of Geometric Methods in Modern Physics, Ahead of Print. The stochastic dynamical [math] equation is utilized as a robust framework for modeling the behavior of complex systems characterized by randomness and nonlinearity, with applications spanning various scientific fields. The aim of this paper is to employ an analytical method to identify stochastic traveling wave solutions of the dynamical [math] equation. Novel hyperbolic and rational functions are investigated through this method. A Galilean transformation is applied to reformulate the model into a planar dynamical system, which enables a comprehensive qualitative analysis. Additionally, the emergence of chaotic and quasi-periodic patterns following the introduction of a perturbation term is addressed. Simulation results indicate that significant changes in the systems' dynamic behavior are caused by adjusting the amplitude and frequency parameters. Our findings indicate the impact of the method on system dynamics and its efficacy in analyzing solitons and phase behavior in nonlinear models. These discoveries provide fresh perspectives on how the suggested method can lead to notable shifts in the systems' dynamic behavior. The effectiveness and practicality of the proposed methodology in scrutinizing soliton solutions and phase visualizations across diverse nonlinear models are underscored by these revelations.

Abstract:Non-interferometric experiments have been successfully employed to constrain models of spontaneous wave function collapse, which predict a violation of the quantum superposition principle for large systems. These experiments are grounded on the fact that, according to these models, the dynamics is driven by a noise that, besides collapsing the wave function in space, generates a diffusive motion with characteristic signatures, which, though small, can be tested. The non-interferometric approach might seem applicable only to those models which implement the collapse through a noisy dynamics, not to any model, which collapses the wave function in space. Here we show that this is not the case: under reasonable assumptions, any collapse dynamics (in space) is diffusive. Specifically, we prove that any space-translation invariant dynamics which complies with the no-signaling constraint, if collapsing the wave function in space, must change the average momentum of the system, and/or its spread.

Abstract:n this paper, we review and connect the three essential conditions needed by the collapse model to achieve a complete and exact formulation, namely the theoretical, the experimental, and the ontological ones. These features correspond to the three parts of the paper. In any empirical science, the first two features are obviously connected but, as is well known, among the different formulations and interpretations of non-relativistic quantum mechanics, only collapse models, as the paper well illustrates with a richness of details, have experimental consequences. Finally, we show that a clarification of the ontological intimations of collapse models is needed for at least three reasons: (1) to respond to the indispensable task of answering the question `what are collapse models (and in general any physical theory) about?'; (2) to achieve a deeper understanding of their different formulations; (3) to enlarge the panorama of possible readings of a theory, which historically has often played a fundamental heuristic role.

Abstract:The question of collapse (blow-up) in finite time is investigated for the two-dimensional (non-integrable) space-time nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equations. Starting from the two-dimensional extension of the well known AKNS q , r system, three different cases are considered: (i) partial and full parity-time (PT) symmetric, (ii) reverse-time (RT) symmetric, and (iii) general q , r system. Through extensive numerical experiments, it is shown that collapse of Gaussian initial conditions depends on the value of its quasi-power. The collapse dynamics (or lack thereof) strongly depends on whether the nonlocality is in space or time. A so-called quasi-variance identity is derived and its relationship to blow-up is discussed. Numerical simulations reveal that this quantity reaching zero in finite time does not (in general) guarantee collapse. An alternative approach to the study of wave collapse is presented via the study of transverse instability of line soliton solutions. In particular, the linear stability problem for perturbed solitons is formulated for the nonlocal RT and PT symmetric nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations. Through a combination of numerical and analytical approaches, the stability spectrum for some stationary one soliton solutions is found. Direct numerical simulations agree with the linear stability analysis which predicts filamentation and subsequent blow-up.

Abstract:A new energy-based stochastic extension of the Schrodinger equation for which the wave function collapses after the passage of a finite amount of time is proposed. An exact closed-form solution to the dynamical equation, valid for all finite-dimensional quantum systems, is presented and used to verify explicitly that reduction of the state vector to an energy eigenstate occurs. A time-change technique is introduced to construct a `clock' variable that relates the asymptotic and the finite-time collapse models by means of a nonlinear transformation.

Abstract:Spontaneous collapse models, which are phenomenological mechanisms introduced and designed to account for dynamical wavepacket reduction, are attracting a growing interest from the community interested in the characterisation of the quantum-to-classical transition. Here, we introduce a {\it quantum-probing} approach to the quest of deriving metrological upper bounds on the free parameters of such empirical models. To illustrate our approach, we consider an extended quantum Ising chain whose elements are -- either individually or collectively -- affected by a mechanism responsible for spontaneous collapse. We explore configurations involving out-of-equilibrium states of the chain, which allows us to infer information about the collapse mechanism before it is completely scrambled from the state of the system. Moreover, we investigate potential amplification effects on the probing performance based on the exploitation of quantum criticality.

Abstract:Spontaneous collapse models aim to resolve the measurement problem in quantum mechanics by considering wave-function collapse as a physical process. We analyze how these models affect a decaying flavor-oscillating system whose evolution is governed by a phenomenological non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. In turn, we apply two popular collapse models, the Quantum Mechanics with Universal Position Localization and the Continuous Spontaneous Localization models, to a neutral meson system. By using the equivalence between the approaches to the time evolution of decaying systems with a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian and a dissipator of the Lindblad form in an enlarged Hilbert space, we show that spontaneous collapse can induce the decay dynamics in both quantum state and master equations. Moreover, we show that the decay property of a flavor-oscillating system is intimately connected to the time (a)symmetry of the noise field underlying the collapse mechanism. This (a)symmetry, in turn, is related to the definition of the stochastic integral and can provide a physical intuition behind the Itō-Stratonovich dilemma in stochastic calculus.

Abstract:The assumption that wave function collapse is induced by correlating interactions of the kind that constitute measurements leads to a stochastic collapse equation that does not require the introduction of any new physical constants and that is consistent with conservation laws. The collapse operator is based on the interaction (potential) energy, with a variable timing parameter related to the rate at which individual interactions generate the correlations. The approximate localization of physical systems follows from the distance-dependent nature of the interaction potentials. The equation is consistent with strict conservation of momentum and orbital angular momentum, and it is also consistent with energy conservation within the accuracy allowed by the limited forms of energy that can be described within nonrelativistic theory. The possibility of extending the proposal to a fully relativistic version is discussed.

Abstract:Collapse models represent one of the possible solutions to the measurement problem. These models modify the Schrödinger dynamics with non-linear and stochastic terms, which guarantee the localization in space of the wave function avoiding macroscopic superpositions, like that described in the Schrödinger's cat paradox. The Ghirardi-Rimini-Weber (GRW) and the Continuous Spontaneous Localization (CSL) models are the most studied among the collapse models. Here, we briefly summarize the main features of these models and the advances in their experimental investigation.

Abstract:This article presents a review of the state of the art of techniques on computational stochastic structural dynamics applying the finite elements. Linear systems under random excitations, quasi-linear systems, nonlinear systems excited by stochastic disturbances, and spatially stochastic nonlinear systems are included. For spatially stochastic linear and nonlinear systems under stochastic and deterministic excitations, alternative approaches, proposed by the author, to the so-called stochastic finite element method are introduced. The introduced approaches are free from the limitations of the: (a) normal mode analysis for linear and quasi-linear systems, (b) normal mode with statistical linearization for nonlinear systems, and (c) perturbation approximation techniques for spatially stochastic systems. The introduced approaches for nonlinear systems are applicable to systems undergoing large deformations of finite strains and finite rotations. Selected computed results are included to demonstrate their simplicity and efficiency.

Abstract:Some dynamical properties present in a problem concerning the acceleration of particles in a wave packet are studied. The dynamics of the model is described in terms of a two-dimensional area preserving map. We show that the phase space is mixed in the sense that there are regular and chaotic regions coexisting. We use a connection with the standard map in order to find the position of the first invariant spanning curve which borders the chaotic sea. We find that the position of the first invariant spanning curve increases as a power of the control parameter with the exponent 2/3. The standard deviation of the kinetic energy of an ensemble of initial conditions obeys a power law as a function of time, and saturates after some crossover. Scaling formalism is used in order to characterize the chaotic region close to the transition from integrability to nonintegrability and a relationship between the power law exponents is derived. The formalism can be applied in many different systems with mixed phase space. Then, dissipation is introduced into the model and therefore the property of area preservation is broken, and consequently attractors are observed. We show that after a small change of the dissipation, the chaotic attractor as well as its basin of attraction are destroyed, thus leading the system to experience a boundary crisis. The transient after the crisis follows a power law with exponent -2.

A proposal for a new kind of spontaneous collapse model

Abstract:Spontaneous collapse models are modifications of standard quantum mechanics in which a physical mechanism is responsible for the collapse of the wavefunction, thus providing a way to solve the so-called "measurement problem". The two most famous of these models are the Ghirardi-Rimini-Weber (GRW) model and the Continuous Spontaneous Localisation (CSL) models. Here, we propose a new kind of non-relativistic spontaneous collapse model based on the idea of collapse points situated at fixed spacetime coordinates. This model shares properties of both GRW and CSL models, while starting from different assumptions. We show that it can lead to a dynamics quite similar to that of the GRW model while also naturally solving the problem of indistinguishable particles. On the other hand, we can also obtain the same master equation of the CSL models. Then, we show how our proposed model solves the measurement problem in a manner conceptually similar to the GRW model. Finally, we show how the proposed model can also accommodate for Newtonian gravity by treating the collapses as gravitational sources.

Abstract:This is an extended discussion of Ref.[1], presenting a nonlinear dynamical model of quantum collapse, with randomness emerging from self-generated noise. Here we focus on a few issues: 1) the way chaos theory explains "deterministic but unpredictable" as a generic feature of nonlinear dynamics; 2) a new argument about why Bell-CHSH and GHZ experiments confirm quantum mechanics; 3) a discussion of why the heating effect predicted by CSL-type theories is not expected to happen according to our approach; 4) in looking for direct-product solutions of our nonlinear Von Neumann equation, we use a parametrization different from that used in Ref.[1], allowing better insight to the locality issue.

Abstract:We calculate the difference of the ionization energies of a core-electron of a surface alloy, i.e., a B-atom in a A_(1-x) B_x overlayer on a fcc-B(001)-substrate, and a core-electron of the clean fcc-B(001) surface using density-functional-theory. We analyze the initial-state contributions and the screening effects induced by the core hole, and study the influence of the alloy composition for a number of noble metal-transition metal systems. Data are presented for Cu_(1-x)Pd_x/Pd(001), Ag_(1-x) Pd_x/Pd(001), Pd_(1-x) Cu_x/Cu(001), and Pd_(1-x) Ag_x/Ag(001), changing x from 0 to 100 %. Our analysis clearly indicates the importance of final-state screening effects for the interpretation of measured core-level shifts. Calculated deviations from the initial-state trends are explained in terms of the change of inter- and intra-atomic screening upon alloying. A possible role of alloying on the chemical reactivity of metal surfaces is discussed.

Abstract:A modified form of quantum mechanics which includes a new mechanism for wavefunction collapse is proposed. The collapse provides a solution to the quantum measurement problem. This modified quantum mechanics is shown to arise naturally from a fully discrete physics, where all physical quantities are discrete rather than continuous. We compare the theory to the spontaneous collapse theories of Ghirardi, Rimini, Weber and Pearle, and argue that the new theory lends itself well to a realist interpretation of the wavefunction.
