Abstract:The discovery of Loulan ancient city (LA) in the early 20th century has important significance for understanding the history of Western regions and the Silk Road civilization. The current academic community still has disputes on whether LA was the capital of Loulan Kingdom, the time of its rise, peak and decline, and the process, rate and driving mechanism of human activity change. This study uses the radio carbon dates (14C) database of LA to reconstruct the history of the rise and fall of human activity, and finds that LA experienced more than ∼500 years from its rise to its peak and then to its decline: 1) the city rose rapidly, and the population increased rapidly from ∼A.D. 0 to 230; 2) the city was prosperous and flourishing, and the intensity of human activity reached its peak from ∼A.D. 160 to 340, especially in ∼A.D. 230, when the population reached its peak; 3) the city accelerated its decline, and the intensity of human activity decreased significantly, and the population shrank rapidly from ∼A.D. 230 to 500; 4) LA was completely abandoned after ∼A.D. 560. The results of the 14C dating database do not support that LA was the early capital of the Loulan Kingdom. By comparing the human activity record of LA with the existing high-resolution palaeoclimate records in the surrounding mountainous areas of the Tarim Basin and South Asia, it is found that the superposition of centennial-scale westerly circulation strength events and the ∼500-year cycle of the Indian monsoon jointly controlled the precipitation and meltwater (snow) supply of the mountains in the Tarim Basin, affecting the changes of surface runoff and oasis area in the basin, which is one of the important factors causing the rise and fall of LA.

Abstract:The ancient Loulan, situated on the west bank of Lake Lop Nur, Xinjiang, Northwest China, was an important town on the Silk Road connecting China to Europe. However, this once-prosperous kingdom has been a depopulated zone filled with wind-eroded mounds since approximately AD 500–600. A comprehensive understanding of the environmental setting of the flourishing Loulan civilization is a prerequisite for assessing environment–human interaction there. Here, we present our survey, chronology, and archaeobotany (the identification of plant remains) of vegetation use for architecture from eight ancient ruins of the Loulan kingdom to clarify the ecological landscape on the west bank of Lake Lop Nur and to assess paleoenvironmental conditions when the Loulan kingdom flourished. Our results suggest that Populus euphratica, tamarisk ( Tamarix Linn), and reed ( Phragmites Trin.) were most widely used as building materials in this period. Wood utilization for buildings depended entirely on indigenous vegetation rather than that of the mountains in the Loulan kingdom, even though the Loulan was a predominant transportation hub on the prosperous Silk Road. Our reconstruction indicates that the west bank of Lake Lop Nur was sufficiently wetter than present conditions to support riparian forest growth composed mainly of P. euphratica, tamarisk shrubs, and reed meadows, until approximately AD 500. These wetter conditions and flourishing civilization accompanied an increase in precipitation in arid central Asia. Conversely, combined evidence of both archeological and paleoclimatic records from the water sources of Lake Lop Nur and ancient oases suggest that abrupt decreased mountain precipitation could be considered a significant environmental factor in the decline of Loulan kingdom.

Abstract:Abstract The pre-Qin and Han Silk Road opened up the Central Plains Dynasty to the Eurasian- African continent, not only having extraordinary political, economic and cultural exchanges complementary strategic significance, but also becoming an irreplaceable important window and way for the Central Plains Dynasty to gain cognitive knowledge of the broader world. In particular, the exploration of the artistic and cultural relics and historical background of the Silk Road is a deep excavation and collation of historical materials of exchanges between the East and the West, especially between China and the nationalities in the Western regions in the fields of traditional politics, commerce, economy, art and culture. This depth of excavation and collation of historical materials, so as to clarify the origin of the Silk Road under different historical conditions and the background of its political, economic, art, and cultural significance in forming the civilisation of the countries along the route. This mutual understanding among various nationalities inevitably promotes the shared development of Eastern and Western civilizations. Therefore, the topic discussed in this paper is a retrospective and complementary approach to the Silk Road as a distant civilisation. This exploration is also another purposeful search for the roots of this road, which was known as the “Journey of Adventure” and “Journey of Intercommunication” from the pre-Qin Dynasty to the two Han Dynasties. Accordingly, this paper promotes the discussion from three aspects: the long historical context of the Silk Road, the channel of multi-ethnic art exchange constituted by Silk Road, and the exchange and dissemination of handicraft culture on the Silk Road, excavating these three rich historical materials is more in order to reveal the historical values of the Silk Road.

Abstract:Political actors communicate strategic narratives to shape the meaning of place-images in the past, present and future. Whether narratives about the past are persuasive depends on the translation of historical ideas embedded in these narratives across time and space. Moreover, the imagination and re-imagination of historical place-images in foreign policy communication are contentious, because they stand for specific power relations and identity narratives. Therefore, actor's selective uses of history require disambiguation to increase positive perception. This abstract argument is theorised in an investigation of China's Belt and Road Initiative, specifically the communication of a New Silk Road. China's promotion of the Silk Road legacy is frequently contested with Great Game interpretations. Through the novels of Marco Polo and Rudyard Kipling, which present historical imaginations of the Silk Road and the Great Game, this study shows the contentiousness of historical place-images across time and space.

Abstract:Based on local gazettes,travel journals and memorials to the throne,this article attempts to reconstruct the distribution and change in vegetation along the main roads within Guizhou Province from the perspective of people walking through them.It also aims to find the traces of rocky desertification recorded in the above mentioned literature based on three inferences:1,the comparison of today's description of the appearance of rocky desertification to that recorded in history;2,consideration for the physical conditions of that could lead to the occurrence of rocky desertification;3,a comparison of ancient distributions of rocky desertification with today's distributions.These explorations suggest a conclusion that karst rocky desertification has existed in Anshun,Zhen'ning,Liuzhi,Panxian,Pu'an and other several counties since the late Ming Dynasty.

Abstract:The ancient Loulan kingdom in northwest China was a key transportation hub along the ancient Silk Road. What determined the burial practice in Loulan is a mystery as many of the tombs were constructed atop approximately 20-m-high yardangs in the north of the ancient city of Loulan. This paper includes the first attempt to provide a geoarchaeological perspective on this problem. A representative section (3.8 m) from the tomb area was investigated using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating and grain size analyses to reconstruct environmental changes. Results show that the section was formed during Loulan?s early development stage (approximately from the second century BC to the first century AD) in the wake of lacustrine-fluvial hydrology fluctuation. Radiocarbon dating suggests that the tombs were also constructed during the period. Therefore, our reconstruction indicates that the landscape of the burial area was dominated by extensive island-like yardangs within a lake or wetland. We argue that the burial practice was influenced by the yardang?s location high above the wetland/flooded area. People would generally prefer cemeteries in the area to avoid disturbance to the bodies from the fluctuating water table.

Abstract:This paper analyses the ancient Maritime Silk Road through a relational island studies approach. Island ports and island cities represented key sites of water-facilitated transport and exchange in the ancient Indian Ocean and South China Sea. Building our analysis upon a historical overview of the ancient Maritime Silk Road from the perspective of China’s Guangdong Province and the city of Guangzhou, we envision a millennia-long ‘Silk Road Archipelago’ encompassing island cities and island territories stretching across East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, West Asia, and East Africa. Bearing in mind the complex movements of peoples, places, and processes involved, we conceptualise the ancient Maritime Silk Road as an uncentred network of archipelagic relation. This conceptualisation of the ancient Maritime Silk Road as a vast archipelago can have relevance for our understanding of China’s present-day promotion of a 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road as part of the Belt and Road Initiative. We ultimately argue against forcing the Maritime Silk Road concept within a binary perspective of essentialised East-West conflict or hierarchical relations and instead argue for the value of a nuanced understanding of relationality.

Abstract:Important changes have taken place in recent years in the study ofthe Jade Route that caused academic interests in the late 20th century.The entering time and route of Nephrite which was much appreciated by the kingship has become one of the most dynamic and vital issues in kingship construction,cultural identification and interaction,the tracing of the origin of Chinese civilization, and the reconstruction of the core values.Perspectives from literature research,geological survey, mineralogical research,archeological exploration,and mythology and religion studies have collectively transformed the researches from primary comparisons and reconstruction of routes into diversified, specific and cautious demonstrations.The long neglected coincidence of the myths ofNephrite from Kungang(the Jade Route)andRiver from Kunlun(the Yellow River waterway)begins to be reexamined.The dilemma of current researches requires a more comparative and integrated comprehension of world civilizations with a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach.Based on field researches and physical evidences,the exploration of psychological motivations for the long distance transportation of jade and the dynamic relationship between material culture and ideological construction is becoming the key issue of the study in the future.

Abstract:Abstract The “Silk Road” has referred to the roads or the road networks that facilitated East–West communication, with ancient China as the starting point in the East. For a long time, the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, known as the “roof of the world,” has not been included in discussions of the Silk Road, as it has been generally understood as dangerous for overland passage due to its location in the alpine snow region, challenging natural environment, and sparse population. As a result, few references on East–West passage through the plateau have been found in the historical records, in both the Chinese and Tibetan languages. However, archaeological discoveries in recent years have shown that from prehistoric times the early people on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau began their communication and exchanges with the outside world in various ways. No later than the Han and the Jin dynasties, the traditional “Land Silk Road” had extended its trunk routes into the plateau. During the Tang dynasty, as the Tubo kingdom expanded continuously, it built a relatively stable transportation and road network that connected it with South, Central, and East Asia, which this article terms the “Plateau Silk Road.” The formation of the Plateau Silk Road was of great significance, as it not only connected the “Land Silk Road” and the “Steppe Silk Road” in North China as well as the “Maritime Silk Road” and the “Southwest Silk Road” in South China as a whole, but also played an irreplaceable role in integrating the western territories of China and the ethnic groups inhabiting these territories into the Chinese national community. In this process, the ancient people of all ethnic groups on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau made important historical contributions.

Abstract:"Belt and Road" represents a corridor of collaboration and mutual gain, aimed at facilitating balanced growth and widespread prosperity. It is a peaceful road to enhance understanding and trust and strengthen all-round exchanges. After Zhang Qian's departure, the ancient Silk Road in the Northwest after the Western Regions was unblocked, political and economic ties between China and foreign countries under normal conditions were established, and the Silk Road trade was further developed. Today, the "Belt and Road" is not a replica of the "Silk Road" but a continuation of the "Silk Road", The "Belt and Road" initiative not only brings huge economic extension to China's economic construction, but also promotes the economic prosperity of countries in the world, strengthens political exchanges among countries in the world, and makes great contributions to the construction of world civilization. In this context, we need to deepen our understanding and understanding of the ancient Silk Road from history, and study the historical value brought by this ancient important channel from more angles. The important role is to learn from historical experience so that it can be used forever.

Abstract:Automatic remote reflectance spectral imaging of large painted areas in high resolution, from distances of tens of meters, has made the imaging of entire architectural interior feasible. However, it has significantly increased the volume of data. Here we present a machine learning based method to automatically detect 'hidden' writings and map material variations. Clustering of reflectance spectra allowed materials at inaccessible heights to be properly identified by performing non-invasive analysis on regions in the same cluster at accessible heights using a range of complementary spectroscopic techniques. The world heritage site of the Mogao caves, along the ancient Silk Road, consists of 492 richly painted Buddhist cave temples dating from the fourth to fourteenth century. Cave 465 at the northern end of the site is unique in its Indo-Tibetan tantric Buddhist style, and like many other caves, the date of its construction is still under debate. This study demonstrates the powers of an interdisciplinary approach that combines material identification, palaeographic analysis of the revealed Sanskrit writings and archaeological evidence for the dating of the cave temple paintings, narrowing it down to the late twelfth century to thirteenth century.

Abstract:The emergence of the Great Silk Road was associated with China’s westward expansion under the Han and Tang dynasties. Under the Tang dynasty western frontiers of Celestial Empire were settled, and Chinese order and culture were established in the new lands included into the empire. At the same time and in the same place, a specific literature of this era, frontier poetry, appeared. From these poems one can obtain indirect information about the Great Silk Road and the lands around it.

Abstract:European travel writings of the colonial period are now a well-studied field. Most of the studies are inspired by post-colonial theories such as those of Foucault and Said. Although the critical perspective found in these studies is valid, the lack of a cross-cultural perspective is quite obvious. This study looks at Victorian travel writing in China from both a critical and comparative cultural perspective. First, concepts from post-colonial criticism are used in the study of Victorian travel narratives with a special emphasis on differences in the definition of civilization between China and Victorian Britain. Secondly, Victorian travel writing is compared with traditional Chinese literati travel essays. It is hoped that by showing the similarities as well as differences between these two travel traditions a broader understanding of culture can be reached.

Abstract:Books act as a crucial carrier of cultural dissemination in ancient times. This work involves joint efforts between visualization and humanities researchers, aiming at building a holistic view of the cultural exchange and integration between China and Japan brought about by the overseas circulation of Chinese classics. Book circulation data consist of uncertain spatiotemporal trajectories, with multiple dimensions, and movement across hierarchical spaces forms a compound network. LiberRoad visualizes the circulation of books collected in the Imperial Household Agency of Japan, and can be generalized to other book movement data. The LiberRoad system enables a smooth transition between three views (Location Graph, map, and timeline) according to the desired perspectives (spatial or temporal), as well as flexible filtering and selection. The Location Graph is a novel uncertainty-aware visualization method that employs improved circle packing to represent spatial hierarchy. The map view intuitively shows the overall circulation by clustering and allows zooming into single book trajectory with lenses magnifying local movements. The timeline view ranks dynamically in response to user interaction to facilitate the discovery of temporal events. The evaluation and feedback from the expert users demonstrate that LiberRoad is helpful in revealing movement patterns and comparing circulation characteristics of different times and spaces.

Abstract:Ancient Chinese civilization was deeply rooted in a profound understanding of the environment. This understanding formed the primitive worship and unique culture of mountains and rivers, which found expression in both official and folk contexts. This essay delves into the significant influence of mountains and rivers on the site selection, positioning, and composition of ancient Chinese settlements. Through an in-depth analysis of cases, this study demonstrates that iconic mountain and river elements served as the foundation for determining the spatial locations of ancient Chinese settlements and the core references for designed landscapes. The settlement and surrounding mountains and rivers form a well-conceived integrated spatial composition, which threads the whole planning and construction process. As the determining factors for the spatial axes and forms of settlements, mountains and rivers also became the central objects of the feng shui theory. Therefore, the human geography of ancient China is not only a reflection of functions but also the result of the builders' diligent pursuit of spatial and cultural layouts. The study of the cultural genes allows for a deeper understanding of the cultural landscape of ancient China, leading to a commitment to protecting traditional settlements and their intact environmental systems.

Abstract:Around the year 140 BC the Evo, the famous imperial Han Dynasty took power in China and then sent some representatives to the western land in order to communicate with the West in addition to know the political, military, geographical, economic and cultural situations of that region, it provides the basis for opening the way to the West. In this regard, they traveled to Iran and accordingly the formal relations were established between the Iranian and the Western governments and finally the Silk Road with a distance of about 8000 km has been emerged and started from the East and ended to Mediterranean Sea in the West. The aim of this study is to show that the Silk Road links throughout the world and its people together in thousands of years and the countries, cities and villages located in this road have been affected by developments or had affected and vivifying of it will lead to develop of the deprived urban and rural areas according to the abundant tourist attractions. This study which has used the historical and analytical method with practical purpose shows that cultural, scientific, religious and commercial exchanges between East and West were wide and many cities and villages were profiting of this gift. In this regard, vivifying of this road will lead to grow the underserved urban and rural areas according to many tourist attractions of the cities and villages.

Abstract:Hong Ke’s novel The Tree of Life roots in the Midwest of China but looks to the whole world. By tracing the homology of human life, it reflects the process of collision, interaction and integration between different cultures along the Silk Road. The plots and scenes spanning time and space in the novel fully reflect the close similarity, distinctive difference, and harmonious coexistence of the Silk Road cultures. The rational understanding of the relations of different cultures along the Silk Road in this novel not only fully embodies the inclusiveness of Chinese culture, but also embodies the sincere aspiration of the Chinese nation to a harmonious world with cultural interaction and integration.

Abstract:Abstract. Since the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD), the Tang-Tibet Road has been the only way from inland China to Qinghai and Tibet, and even to other countries such as Nepal and India. It ties and bonds various ethnic groups and regions, integrates cultural memories and cross-cultural communication achievements from ancient times to the present, and witnesses the dynamic propagation of the culture. Affected by the environment, climate, and wars, Tang-Tibet Road was often impossible to travel on or through intermittently during its progressive development in history. Routes and lines of each of its sections changed from time to time; eventually, an ancient road network was formed, consisting of one trunk road, two subsidiary roads in the north and south, several branches, and scattered auxiliary routes separated from the system, among which there were both outward-oriented international passages and inward-oriented passages. Nonetheless, research on Tang-Tibet Road is insufficient at the current stage. Regarding the problems summarized based on the review of the research situation, the present work probes deeper into the network structure of Tang-Tibet Road. How historical corridor is generated and evolved is understood from a regional perspective. In particular, strategies to design a space information system for the Tibet section of Tang-Tibet Road are explained to promote the exploration and use of cultural heritages in Tibet, in an effort to preserve these heritages while developing Tibet’s society and economy.
