Abstract:Abstract Equatorial plasma bubbles are a phenomenon of plasma density depletion with small-scale density irregularities, normally observed in the equatorial ionosphere. This phenomenon, which impacts satellite-based communications, was observed in the Asia-Pacific region after the largest-on-record January 15, 2022 eruption of the Tonga volcano. We used satellite and ground-based ionospheric observations to demonstrate that an air pressure wave triggered by the Tonga volcanic eruption could cause the emergence of an equatorial plasma bubble. The most prominent observation result shows a sudden increase of electron density and height of the ionosphere several ten minutes to hours before the initial arrival of the air pressure wave in the lower atmosphere. The propagation speed of ionospheric electron density variations was ~ 480–540 m/s, whose speed was higher than that of a Lamb wave (~315 m/s) in the troposphere. The electron density variations started larger in the Northern Hemisphere than in the Southern Hemisphere. The fast response of the ionosphere could be caused by an instantaneous transmission of the electric field to the magnetic conjugate ionosphere along the magnetic field lines. After the ionospheric perturbations, electron density depletion appeared in the equatorial and low-latitude ionosphere and extended at least up to ±25° in geomagnetic latitude.

Abstract:We present X-ray observations of the upper atmospheric density disturbance caused by the explosive eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai (HTHH) volcano on 15 January 2022. From 14 January to 16 January, the Chinese X-ray astronomy satellite, Insight-HXMT, was observing the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A. The X-ray data obtained during Earth's atmospheric occultations allowed us to measure neutral densities in the altitude range of ~90-150 km. The density profiles above 110 km altitude obtained before the major eruption are in reasonable agreement with expectations by both GAIA and NRLMSIS 2.0 models. In contrast, after the HTHH eruption, a severe density depletion was found up to ~1,000 km away from the epicenter, and a relatively weak depletion extending up to ~7,000 km for over 8 hr after the eruption. In addition, density profiles showed wavy structures with a typical length scale of either ~20 km (vertical) or ~1,000 km (horizontal). This may be caused by Lamb waves or gravity waves triggered by the volcanic eruption.

Analysis of Ionospheric Anomalies Before the Tonga Volcanic Eruption on 15 January 2022

Abstract:In this paper, GNSS stations’ observational data, global ionospheric maps (GIM) and the electron density of FORMOSAT-7/COSMIC-2 occultation are used to study ionospheric anomalies before the submarine volcanic eruption of Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha’apai on 15 January 2022. (i) We detect the negative total electron content (TEC) anomalies by three GNSS stations on 5 January before the volcanic eruption after excluding the influence of solar and geomagnetic disturbances and lower atmospheric forcing. The GIMs also detect the negative anomaly in the global ionospheric TEC only near the epicenter of the eruption on 5 January, with a maximum outlier exceeding 6 TECU. (ii) From 1 to 3 January (local time), the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) peak shifts significantly towards the Antarctic from afternoon to night. The equatorial ionization anomaly double peak decreases from 4 January, and the EIA double peak disappears and merges into a single peak on 7 January. Meanwhile, the diurnal maxima of TEC at TONG station decrease by nearly 10 TECU and only one diurnal maximum occurred on 4 January (i.e., 5 January of UT), but the significant ionospheric diurnal double-maxima (DDM) are observed on other dates. (iii) We find a maximum value exceeding NmF2 at an altitude of 100~130 km above the volcanic eruption on 5 January (i.e., a sporadic E layer), with an electron density of 7.5 × 105 el/cm3.

Abstract:In this article, we show the capability of a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) precise orbit determination (POD) low Earth orbit (LEO) data to detect anomalous ionospheric disturbances in the spectral range of the signals associated with earthquakes and tsunamis, applied to two of these events in Papua New Guinea (PNG) and the Solomon Islands during 2016. This is achieved thanks to the new PIES approach (POD-GNSS LEO Detrended Ionospheric Electron Content Significant Deviations). The significance of such ionospheric signals above the swarm LEOs is confirmed with different types of independent data: in situ electron density measurements provided by the Langmuir Probe (LP) onboard swarm LEOs, DORIS, and ground-based GNSS colocated measurements, as it is described in this article. In this way, we conclude the possible detection of the tsunami-related ionospheric gravity wave in PNG 2016 event, consistent with the most-recent theory, which shows that a tsunami (which is localized in space and time) excites a spectrum of gravity waves, some of which have faster horizontal phase speeds than the tsunami. We believe that this work shows as well the feasibility of a future potential monitoring system of ionospheric disturbances, to be made possible by hundreds of CubeSats with POD GNSS receivers among other appropriate sensors, and supported for real-time or near real-time confirmation and characterization by thousands of worldwide existing ground GNSS receivers.

Abstract:Ionospheric electron density monitoring is of great significance for positioning and navigation, communication technology and space weather research. To alleviate the ill-posed problem of ionospheric electron density inversion caused by sparse and unevenly distributed stations, the DCS-PCA (Dynamic Compressive Sensing-Principal Component Analysis) ionospheric tomography method is used in the paper. This method is a real-time data-driven tomographic method based on compressive sensing and fusion of measurement data. This paper focuses on investigating the influence of the 2022 Hunga-Tonga volcanic eruption on the ionosphere in the Chinese region. The GPS navigation observations were collected from 130 stations within the Qianxun Ground-Based Augmentation System. The constructed ionospheric electron density model demonstrates the DCS-PCA method’s ability to capture the spatiotemporal evolution of the ionosphere during the volcanic eruption. In the ionospheric tomography model, equatorial plasma bubbles were observed in East and Southeast Asia following volcanic waves, leading to reduced electron density, consistent with the reference. The ionospheric tomographic model in this study possesses quasi-real-time capability, high efficiency, and sparse station adaptability, providing a new tomographic solution for ionospheric monitoring.

Abstract:The Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) mission has provided over ten years of high-quality data products for environment forecasting and monitoring through the current Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (S-NPP) and NOAA-20 satellites. Particularly, the sensor data record (SDR) and the derived environmental data record (EDR) products from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), the Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS), the Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS), and the Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS) offer an unprecedented opportunity to observe severe weather and environmental events over the Earth. This paper presents the observations about atmospheric features of the Hunga Tonga Volcanic eruption of January 2022, e.g., the gravity wave, volcanic cloud, and aerosol (sulfate) plume phenomena, by using the ATMS, CrIS, OMPS, and VIIRS SDR and EDR products. Powerful gravity waves ringing through the atmosphere after the eruption of the Hunga Tonga volcano are discovered at two CrIS upper sounding channels (670 cm−1 and 2320 cm−1) in the deviations of the observed brightness temperature (O) from the simulated baseline brightness temperature (B) using the Community Radiative Transfer Model (CRTM), i.e., O—B. A similar pattern is also observed in the ATMS global maps at channel 15, whose peak weighting function is around 40 km, showing the atmospheric disturbance caused by the eruption that reached 40 km above the surface. The Tonga volcanic cloud (plume) was also captured by the OMPS SO2 EDR product. The gravity wave features were also captured in the native resolution image of the S-NPP VIIRS I-5 band nighttime observations. In addition, the VIIRS Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) captured and tracked the volcanic aerosol (sulfate) plume successfully. These discoveries demonstrate the scientific potential of the JPSS SDR and EDR products in monitoring and tracking the eruption of the Hunga Tonga volcano and its severe environmental impacts. This paper presents the atmospheric features of the Hunga Tonga volcano eruption that is uniquely captured by all four advanced sensors onboard JPSS satellites, with different spectral coverages and spatial resolutions.
Unseasonal super ionospheric plasma bubble and scintillations seeded by the 2022 Tonga Volcano Eruption related perturbations

Abstract:The Hunga–Tonga volcano eruption at 04:14:45 UT on 15 January 2022 produced various waves propagating globally, disturbing the background atmosphere and ionosphere. Coinciding with the arrival of perturbation waves, several equatorial plasma bubbles (EPBs) were consecutively generated at post-sunset hours over the East/Southeast Asian region, with the largest extension to middle latitudes. These EPBs caused intense L-band amplitude scintillations at middle-to-low latitudes, with signal fading depths up to ~16 dB. Considering the very rare occurrence of EPBs during this season in the East/Southeast Asian sector and the significantly modulated background ionosphere, we believe that the perturbation waves launched by the volcano eruption triggered the generation of the unseasonal super EPBs. The ionospheric perturbations linked with the 2022 Tonga volcano eruption propagated coincidently through the East/Southeast Asia longitude sector near sunset, modulated the equatorial F region bottomside plasma density, and acted as the seeding source for the generation of the unseasonal super bubbles. Our results implicate that volcano eruption could indirectly affect the satellite communication links in the region more than ten thousand kilometers away.

Abstract:On 4 March 2021, a devastating M8.1 earthquake struck the Kermadec Islands of New Zealand. Given the tremendous energy released during the event, we sought to investigate the event's potential impact on the ionosphere and the inner Van Allen Belt using data from the high-energy electron detectors on board the NOAA-18 satellite. The survey was also extended to the strongest shallow M6.5+ earthquakes occurring between 150° and 190° in longitude, and between −5° and −35° in latitude over the previous ten years. In nearly all cases, evident electron fluxes entering the loss cone were observed. To explore the possibility of a connection between ionospheric signals and tectonic events in this intensely active region, we analyzed electron losses from the inner Van Allen Belt, taking into account latitude, longitude, day/night times, and proximity to the South Atlantic Anomaly. Compared to previous studies, here only the most significant loss phenomena persistent in the ionosphere were considered. Particular interest was reserved for the intense electron loss events that had a duration spanning from a few to several minutes and occurred several hours before and after strong seismic events. Thereafter, time series of electron counting rates and strong Southern Pacific earthquakes were transformed into binary series, and the series multiplication was investigated. The results suggest four peaks of association, including a first couple between electron perturbations detected for ascending semi-orbits and seismic events and a second one between electron perturbations detected in the southern ionosphere and seismic events. They both anticipated the occurrence of earthquakes, occurring around 4 h before them. Other couples were observed between electron perturbations detected for descending semi-orbits and seismic events and between electron perturbations detected in the northern ionosphere and seismic events. They both occurred around 3 h after the occurrence of earthquakes. The case of perturbations anticipating seismic events has the intriguing properties of sustaining the hypothesis that a physical interaction occurred around 6 h before seismic events as in the West Pacific case. A physical model of electrons detected far several thousands of km from the earthquake epicenters was also presented. However, a simulation of random seismic events suggested that the null hypothesis cannot be fully rejected for these associations, prompting many more analyses and case studies.

Abstract:Complex measurements being performed with a network of stations at different epicenter distances allowed to register numerous effects in various geophysical fields at the moment of peak activity of the Tonga Volcano 15/01/2022. Monitoring was also performed at the "Mikhnevo" Geophysical Observatory of Sadovsky Institute of Geospheres Dynamics of Russian Academy of Sciences. The aim was to detect the links between disturbances in the atmosphere, changes in ambient seismic noise, and variations in underground water level. For the first time in an aseismic region the reaction of unevenly aged aquifers to a global disturbance in the form of propagating Lamb atmospheric waves (direct and antipodal ones) as they passed around the Earth have been registered. The responses recorded in different geophysical fields were compared to background values of probability density function of power spectral density. A difference in the intensities of the responses of the confined and weakly confined aquifers to two passages of atmospheric fronts from the Tonga volcanic eruption was established. This difference corresponds to the values of barometric efficiency. Delays of the hydrogeological responses with respect to the passage of Lamb waves were observed. Synchronous measurements of hydrogeological responses to passing atmospheric disturbances produced by the Tonga volcanic eruption performed in an aseismic region add to the world database of interacting geospheres and require further consideration involving the analysis of available experimental data.

Abstract:On 15 January 2022, a massive underwater volcano erupted in the Tonga region, releasing a significant amount of volcanic ash and gases into the atmosphere. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) estimated the seismic source to have a surface wave magnitude (Ms) of 5.8. This eruption was observed from space, and the resulting atmospheric shockwave swept across the Pacific Ocean. Reports from various locations worldwide indicated rapid fluctuations in air pressure following this event. Taiwan, situated in the western Pacific, approximately 8,500 km from the eruption source, observed significant changes. During this volcanic eruption, both rapid air pressure changes and several significant changes in the Earth's physical parameters were observed in Taiwan. The Tonga eruption is a unique event, and comprehensive observations provide an opportunity to explore and explain the mechanisms behind this extreme event. Data from ground surface air pressure gauges, coastal tide gauges, underwater pressure gauges, infrasound sensors, digital microphones, and seismometers were collected. These data were analyzed to identify their origin and explain their interactions. The results of this study first present the detailed propagation characteristics of air pressure waves in the Taiwan region and verify the occurrence of a specific tsunami phenomenon caused by the atmospheric disturbance from the Tonga eruption. It follows a distinct mechanism, explaining its arrival time and wave height distribution around Taiwan, which is different from conventional tsunamis of tectonic origins, which are formed by rapid changes in water caused by earthquakes or underwater landslides.

Abstract:SUMMARY Continuous Plinian eruptions often excite atmospheric modes of ∼3.7 and ∼4.4 mHz, which are observed as harmonic oscillations of ionospheric total electron content (TEC) by global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receivers. Such TEC oscillations started shortly after the great eruption of the Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha'apai (HTHH) submarine volcano at ∼4:14 UT, on 2022 January 15. Here I analyse GNSS data at stations within ∼4000 km from the volcano to study temporal and spatial distribution of such atmospheric modes. Strong ∼3.7 mHz TEC oscillations in near fields started shortly after the eruption onset and propagated outward with the sound speed from HTHH. Later such TEC oscillations became strong again with the amplitude peak at the distance ∼1400 km from HTHH. Such far field oscillations occurred also above New Zealand and the Solomon Islands, ∼3000 km from HTHH. Their amplitudes seem correlated with those of the 0S29 solid earth mode, suggesting that vertical surface vibrations underneath may play a role in maintaining the atmospheric mode. Onset of the far field TEC oscillations are synchronized with the local sunrise, possibly controlled by diurnal changes in the ionospheric electron density.

Abstract:Seamount eruptions alter the bathymetry and can occur undetected due to lack of explosive character. We review documented eruptions to define whether they could be detected by a future satellite gravity mission. We adopt the noise level in acquisitions of multi-satellite constellations as in the MOCAST+ study, with a proposed payload of a quantum technology gradiometer and clock. The review of underwater volcanoes includes the Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha'apai (HTHH) islands for which the exposed surface changed during volcanic unrests of 2014/2015 and 2021/2022. The Fani Maoré submarine volcanic eruption of 2018–2021 produced a new seamount 800 m high, emerging from a depth of 3500 m, and therefore not seen above sea surface. We review further documented submarine eruptions and estimate the upper limit of the expected gravity changes. We find that a MOCAST+ type mission should allow us to detect the subsurface mass changes generated by deep ocean submarine volcanic activity for volume changes of 6.5 km 3 upwards, with latency of 1 year. This change is met by the HTHH and Fani Maoré volcanoes.

Abstract:SUMMARY At 04:14:45 UT on 2022 January 15, a powerful eruption of the submarine Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha'apai volcano occurred at about 30 km south of the Ha'apai Islands in the Kingdom of Tonga (at −20.55° N, −175.39° E). This eruption caused atmospheric waves that spread worldwide. In this study, we investigate the the total electron content (TEC) variation over China using the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System. The particularly interesting feature of the data set compared to other ground-based TEC data is the exclusive use of the BeiDou geostationary satellites, which monitor the TEC variations for fixed ionospheric piercing points and can provide more accurate calculations of the travelling speed of the disturbance. For comparison, atmospheric pressure records were examined, which show that the Lamb wave passed by the same stations four times with a constant speed of 310 m s−1. However, the TEC results show that the ionospheric disturbances passing over China four times with different speeds within four days after the eruption, two travelling along the short-path direction and two along the long-path direction. The primary front of the first short-path event travels with a speed of 340 m s−1, which is higher than the Lamb wave. The faster speed suggests that the primary front cannot be fully attributed to the Lamb wave, and further studies need to explore its mechanism. The second short-path and first long-path events travel with speeds of 301 and 310 m s−1, respectively, close to the speed of the Lamb wave, and they may be caused by upward energy leakage during the propagation of the Lamb wave. The second long-path event travels with a speed of 264 m s−1, possibly induced by the gravity waves.

Abstract:On 15 January 2022, the submarine Hunga Tonga volcanic eruption lofted materials high into the upper stratosphere, reaching a record-breaking altitude of ∼58 km, unprecedented in the satellite observations era. Within two weeks, the bulk of the injected material circulated the globe between 20-30 km altitude, as observed by satellite instruments. We estimate that the stratospheric aerosol optical depth (sAOD) is the largest since the Pinatubo eruption and is at least twice as great as the sAOD after the 2015 Calbubo eruption despite the similar SO2 injection from that eruption. We use space-based observations to monitor the Hunga-Tonga volcanic plume evolution and transport at different altitudes as it circulates the globe. While the main aerosol layer remains trapped in the tropical pipe, small parts have already made it to both the northern and southern hemisphere poles by April, which is almost certain to influence this year's ozone hole.
Detecting covolcanic ionospheric disturbances using GNSS data and a machine learning algorithm

Abstract:Many natural and man-made phenomena cause ionospheric responses that can be captured in total electron content data obtained from Global Navigation Satellite System observations. However, the increasing volume of the data poses challenges for its analysis. This study provides an algorithm for detecting covolcanic ionospheric disturbances in total electron content time series based on machine learning. Using the Sarychev Peak eruption (June 11–16, 2009) as an example, we identified and labeled the observational data, proposed data features, and generated datasets. The design and number of features were chosen considering the computational efficiency of the algorithm and its potential applicability in monitoring systems. A machine learning model based on a gradient boosting technique was trained and achieved a Matthews correlation coefficient of 0.86 on the test dataset, indicating the high quality. The proposed algorithm detects 96% of the disturbances in the datasets with a minimal number of false positives (48 out of 200 test files), exhibiting a significant improvement compared with the conventional STA\LTA algorithm, which detected only 11% of the disturbances. The validation of the algorithm on data corresponding to the Calbuco (2015) and Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai (2022) volcanoes eruptions showed 94% and 81% of the disturbances detected, respectively.
