Abstract:Hamiltonian systems are widely used to model dynamics in physics and one of the grand challenges of this type of systems is to obtain numerical simulation results but retaining physical properties in the real physics world, especially for long term numerical time integration. The so-called symplectic algorithms have been proposed to tackle this tough problem but they are quite mathematical and require a deep understanding of symplectic geometry. In this work, we consider an alternative method based on a spring-mass benchmark using feedback mechanisms. By introducing artificial control terms, we are able to cancel the unexpected effects in numerical discretizations which destroy the physical structures of Hamiltonian systems. Numerical simulation shows a great effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

Abstract:A stochastic averaging method is proposed for quasi-Hamiltonian systems (Hamiltonian systems with light dampings subject to weakly stochastic excitations). Various versions of the method, depending on whether the associated Hamiltonian systems are integrable or nonintegrable, resonant or nonresonant, are discussed. It is pointed out that the standard stochastic averaging method and the stochastic averaging method of energy envelope are special cases of the stochastic averaging method of quasi-Hamiltonian systems and that the results obtained by this method for several examples prove its effectiveness.

Abstract:Energy-preserving algorithms, as one of the core research areas in numerical ordinary differential equations, have achieved great success by many methods such as symplectic methods and discrete gradient methods. This paper considers the numerical integration of quasi-bi-Hamiltonian systems, which, as a generalization of bi-Hamiltonian systems, can be expressed in two distinct ways: . The quasi-bi-Hamiltonian systems have two Hamiltonians and . Conventional discrete gradient methods can only preserve one Hamiltonian at a time. In this paper, based on discrete gradient and projection, new energy-preserving integrators that can preserve the two Hamiltonians simultaneously are proposed. They show better qualitative behaviours than traditional discrete gradient methods do. Numerical integrations of Hénon-Heiles type systems and the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation are conducted to show the effectiveness of the new integrators in comparison with traditional discrete gradient methods.

Abstract:In this paper we design discrete port-Hamiltonian systems systematically in two different ways, by applying discrete gradient methods and splitting methods respectively. The discrete port-Hamiltonian systems we get satisfy a discrete notion of passivity, which lets us, by choosing the input appropriately, make them globally asymptotically stable with respect to an equilibrium point. We test methods designed using the discrete gradient approach in numerical experiments, and the results are encouraging when compared to relevant existing integrators of identical order.

Abstract:This paper surveys in detail the relations between numerical integration and the Hamiltonian (or hybrid) Monte Carlo method (HMC). Since the computational cost of HMC mainly lies in the numerical integrations, these should be performed as efficiently as possible. However, HMC requires methods that have the geometric properties of being volume-preserving and reversible, and this limits the number of integrators that may be used. On the other hand, these geometric properties have important quantitative implications for the integration error, which in turn have an impact on the acceptance rate of the proposal. While at present the velocity Verlet algorithm is the method of choice for good reasons, we argue that Verlet can be improved upon. We also discuss in detail the behaviour of HMC as the dimensionality of the target distribution increases.

Comparison of Very Smooth Cell-Model Trajectories Using Five Symplectic and Two Runge-Kutta Integrators

Abstract:Time-reversible symplectic methods, which are precisely compatible with Liouville's phase-volume-conservation theorem, are often recommended for computational simulations of Hamiltonian mechanics. Lack of energy drift is an apparent advantage of such methods. But all numerical methods are susceptible to Lyapunov instability, which severely limits the maximum time for which chaotic solutions can be "accurate". The "advantages" of higher-order methods are lost rapidly for typical chaotic Hamiltonians. We illustrate these difficulties for a useful reproducible test case, the two-dimensional one-particle cell model with specially smooth forces. This Hamiltonian problem is chaotic and occurs on a three-dimensional constant-energy shell, the minimum dimension for chaos. We benchmark the problem with quadruple-precision trajectories using the fourth-order Candy-Rozmus, fifth-order Runge-Kutta, and eighth-order Schlier-Seiter-Teloy integrators. We compare the last, most-accurate particle trajectories to those from six double-precision algorithms, four symplectic and two Runge-Kutta.

Comparison between Symplectic Integrators and Clean Numerical Simulation for Chaotic Hamiltonian Systems

Abstract:In this paper we compare the reliability of numerical simulations given by the classical symplectic integrator (SI) and the clean numerical simulation (CNS) for chaotic Hamiltonian systems. The chaotic Hu0027{e}non-Heiles system and the famous three-body problem are used as examples for comparison. It is found that the numerical simulations given by the symplectic integrator indeed preserves the conservation of the total energy of system quite well. However, their orbits quickly depart away from each other. Thus, the SI can not give a reliable long-term evolution of orbits for these chaotic Hamiltonian systems. Fortunately, the CNS can give the convergent, reliable long-term evolution of solution trajectory with rather small deviations from the total energy. All of these suggest that the CNS could provide us a better and more reliable way than the SI to investigate chaotic Hamiltonian systems, from the microscopic quantum chaos to the macroscopic solar system.

Abstract:In this paper we discuss energy conservation issues related to the numerical solution of the nonlinear wave equation, when a Fourier expansion is considered for the space discretization. The obtained semi-discrete problem is then solved in time by means of energy-conserving Runge-Kutta methods in the HBVMs class.

Abstract:As one of the most important properties, energy preservation is a natural requirement for numerical integrators of Hamiltonian systems. Considering the limited second-order accuracy of the existing exponential average vector filed (or discrete gradient) method, this paper is devoted to developing high-order energy-preserving exponential integrators for general semilinear Hamiltonian systems. To this end, we first formulate and analyze the continuous-stage exponential Runge--Kutta (ERK) method. After deriving the order conditions, energy-preserving conditions, and symmetric conditions for the continuous-stage ERK method, we construct a novel class of fourth-order symmetric energy-preserving continuous-stage ERK methods with a free parameter based on the established conditions and present a convergence theorem for the fixed-point iteration associated with the continuous-stage ERK method. Furthermore, we extend the proposed continuous-stage ERK method to noncanonical Hamiltonian systems and discuss implementation issues in detail. Finally, numerical results from the FPU problem, the charged-particle dynamics, and the Klein--Gordon equation demonstrate the high efficiency, good energy-preserving behavior, and applicability of large time stepsizes of the proposed fourth-order energy-preserving continuous-stage ERK method.

Abstract:In this paper we propose and investigate a general approach to constructing local energy-preserving algorithms which can be of arbitrarily high order in time for solving Hamiltonian PDEs. This approach is based on the temporal discretization using continuous Runge-Kutta-type methods, and the spatial discretization using pseudospectral methods or Gauss-Legendre collocation methods. The local energy conservation law of our new schemes is analyzed in detail. The effectiveness of the novel local energy-preserving integrators is demonstrated by coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations and 2D nonlinear Schrodinger equations with external fields. Our new schemes are compared with some classical multi-symplectic and symplectic schemes in numerical experiments. The numerical results show the remarkable long-term behaviour of our new schemes. Numerical Solutions of Energy-Conserving Time Integration Methods

Abstract:Two energy-conserving time integration methods developed by Simo and Hughes,respectively,were studied due to their excellent unconditional stability for general nonlinear structures to obtain the optimal method.Firstly,the ways of conserving system energy,hence ensuring unconditional stability,were analyzed by comparing the balance equations of the two methods.Then,numerical solutions of the two methods applied to solving dynamical balance equations were studied theoretically.The theoretical analyses showed that the balance equation of Simo method has the only one solution,while Hughes method may induce multiple solutions which may lead to unreasonable solution when solving balance equations.The results of numerical examples demonstrated the correctness of the theoretical analyses and showed higher computation efficiency of Simo method than those of Hughes one and the typical average acceleration one.The results of theoretical analyses and numerical examples exhibited advantages of Simo method over Hughes one and the average acceleration one.
Explicit near-symplectic integrators for post-Newtonian Hamiltonian systems

Abstract:Explicit symplectic integrators are powerful and widely used for Hamiltonian systems. However, once the post-Newtonian (PN) effect is considered to provide more precise modeling for the N-body problem, explicit symplectic methods cannot be constructed due to the nonseparability of the Hamiltonian. Thus, the available symplectic method is either fully implicit or semi-implicit, which decreases the efficiency because of the implicit iteration used during the evolution. In this paper, we aim to explore efficient explicit methods whose performance is mostly like symplectic methods for PN Hamiltonian systems. Taking the small parameter appearing in PN terms into consideration, we replace the implicit symplectic solver with explicit solvers in the mixed symplectic method to solve the PN term and then derive three explicit methods. It is theoretically shown that the proposed methods are respectively second-order, fourth-order, and pseudo-fourth-order, and that their closeness to the corresponding symplectic methods are and That is, they are explicit near-symplectic methods with the presence of the small parameter Numerical experiments with the Hamiltonian problem of spinning compact binaries show that the energy errors and orbital errors of the proposed explicit near-symplectic methods are indistinguishable from the corresponding mixed semi-implicit symplectic methods. The very small magnitude of the difference between the proposed explicit near-symplectic methods and the mixed symplectic methods confirms our theoretical analysis of their closeness to symplecticity. Finally, the much less CPU time consumed by the proposed methods highlights their most important advantage of high efficiency over the mixed symplectic methods.

Abstract:High order WENO (weighted essentially non-oscillatory) schemes and discontinuous Galerkin methods are two classes of high order, high resolution methods suitable for convection dominated simulations with possible discontinuous or sharp gradient solutions. In this paper we first review these two classes of methods, pointing out their similarities and differences in algorithm formulation, theoretical properties, implementation issues, applicability, and relative advantages. We then present some quantitative comparisons of the third order finite volume WENO methods and discontinuous Galerkin methods for a series of test problems to assess their relative merits in accuracy and CPU timing.

Abstract:This paper analyses the long-time behaviour of one-stage symplectic or symmetric trigonometric integrators when applied to nonlinear wave equations. It is shown that energy, momentum, and all harmonic actions are approximately preserved over a long time for one-stage explicit symplectic or symmetric trigonometric integrators when applied to nonlinear wave equations via spectral semi-discretisations. For the long-term analysis of symplectic or symmetric trigonometric integrators, we derive a multi-frequency modulated Fourier expansion of the trigonometric integrator and show three almost-invariants of the modulation system. In the analysis of this paper, we neither assume symmetry for symplectic methods, nor assume symplecticity for symmetric methods. The results for symplectic and symmetric methods are obtained as a byproduct of the above analysis. We also give another proof by establishing a relationship between symplectic and symmetric trigonometric integrators and trigonometric integrators which have been researched for wave equations in the literature.

Abstract:In this paper, we focus our attention on deriving and analyzing an efficient energy-preserving formula for the system of nonlinear oscillatory or highly oscillatory second-order differential equations q″(t)+Mq(t)=fq(t), where M is a symmetric positive semi-definite matrix with M≫1 and f(q)=-∇qU(q) is the negative gradient of a real-valued function U(q). This system is a Hamiltonian system with the Hamiltonian H(p,q)=12pTp+12qTMq+U(q). The energy-preserving formula exactly preserves the Hamiltonian. We analyze in detail the properties of the energy-preserving formula and propose new efficient energy-preserving integrators in the sense of numerical implementation. The convergence analysis of the fixed-point iteration is presented for the implicit integrators proposed in this paper. It is shown that the convergence of implicit Average Vector Field methods is dependent on M, whereas the convergence of the new energy-preserving integrators is independent of M. The Fermi–Pasta–Ulam problem and the sine–Gordon equation are carried out numerically to show the competence and efficiency of the novel integrators in comparison with the well-known Average Vector Field methods in the scientific literature.

Abstract:In this paper, we first derive the energy-preserving collocation integrator for solving the hyperbolic Hamiltonian systems. Then, two concrete high-order energy-preserving and symmetric integrators are presented by choosing the collocation nodes as two and three Gauss–Legendre points, respectively. The convergence and the symmetry of the constructed energy-preserving integrators are rigorously analysed. Numerical results verify the energy conservation property and the accuracy of the proposed integrators.

Abstract:This article considers Hamiltonian mechanical systems with potential functions admitting jump discontinuities. The focus is on accurate and efficient numerical approximations of their solutions, which will be defined via the laws of reflection and refraction. Despite of the success of symplectic integrators for smooth mechanical systems, their construction for the discontinuous ones is nontrivial, and numerical convergence order can be impaired too. Several rather-usable numerical methods are proposed, including: a first-order symplectic integrator for general problems, a third-order symplectic integrator for problems with only one linear interface, arbitrarily high-order reversible integrators for general problems (no longer symplectic), and an adaptive time-stepping version of the previous high-order method. Interestingly, whether symplecticity leads to favorable long time performance is no longer clear due to discontinuity, as traditional Hamiltonian backward error analysis does not apply any more. Therefore, at this stage, our recommended default method is the last one. Various numerical evidence, on the order of convergence, long time performance, momentum map conservation, and consistency with the computationally-expensive penalty method, are supplied. A complex problem, namely the Sauteed Mushroom, is also proposed and numerically investigated, for which multiple bifurcations between trapped and ergodic dynamics are observed.

Abstract:This paper reviews some recent numerical methods for hyperbolic equations with singular (discontinuous or measure-valued) coefficients. Such problems arise in wave propagation through interfaces or barriers, or nonlinear waves through singular geometries. The connection between the well-balanced schemes for shallow-water equations with discontinuous bottom topography and the Hamiltonian preserving schemes for Liouville equations with discontinuous Hamiltonians is illustrated. Various developments of numerical methods with applications in high frequency waves through interfaces, and in multiscale coupling between classical and quantum mechanics, are discussed.
