Abstract:Perovskite and graphene-based nanocomposites have attracted much attention and been proven as promising candidates for both gas (H2S and NH3) and electrochemical (H2O2, CH3OH and glucose) sensor applications. In this review, the development of portable sensor devices on the sensitivity, selectivity, cost effectiveness, and electrode stability of chemical and electrochemical applications is summarized. The authors are mainly focused on the common analytes in gas sensors such as hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, and electrochemical sensors including non-enzymatic glucose, hydrazine, dopamine, and hydrogen peroxide. Finally, the article also addressed the stability of composite performance and outlined recent strategies for future sensor perspectives.

Abstract:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs), as 0D graphene nanomaterials, have aroused increasing interest in chemiresistive gas sensors owing to their remarkable physicochemical properties and tunable electronic structures. Research on GQDs has been booming over the past decades, and a number of excellent review articles have been provided on various other sensing principles of GQDs, such as fluorescence-based ion-sensing, bio-sensing, bio-imaging, and electrochemical, photoelectrochemical, and electrochemiluminescence sensing, and therapeutic, energy and catalysis applications. However, so far, there is no single review article on the application of GQDs in the field of chemiresistive gas sensing. This is our primary inspiration for writing this review, with a focus on the chemiresistive gas sensors reported using GQD-based composites. In this review, the various synthesized strategies of GQDs and its composites, gas sensing enhancement mechanisms, and the resulting sensing characteristics are presented. Finally, the current challenges and future prospects of GQDs in the abovementioned application filed have been discussed for the more rational design of advanced GQDs-based gas-sensing materials and innovative gas sensors with novel functionalities.

Abstract:The development of new and high-performing electrode materials for sensing applications is one of the most intriguing and challenging research fields. There are several ways to approach this matter, but the use of nanostructured surfaces is among the most promising and highest performing. Graphene and graphene-related materials have contributed to spreading nanoscience across several fields in which the combination of morphological and electronic properties exploit their outstanding electrochemical properties. In this review, we discuss the use of graphene and graphene-like materials to produce gas sensors, highlighting the most relevant and new advancements in the field, with a particular focus on the interaction between the gases and the materials.

Abstract:The importance of gas sensors is apparent as the detection of gases and pollutants is crucial for environmental monitoring and human safety. Gas sensing devices also hold the potential for medical applications as health monitoring and disease diagnostic tools. Gas sensors fabricated from graphene-based fibers present a promising advancement in the field of sensing technology due to their enhanced sensitivity and selectivity. The diverse chemical and mechanical properties of graphene-based fibers—such as high surface area, flexibility, and structural stability—establish them as ideal gas-sensing materials. Most significantly, graphene fibers can be readily tuned to detect a wide range of gases, making them highly versatile in gas-sensing technologies. This review focuses on graphene-based composite fibers for gas sensors, with an emphasis on the preparation processes used to achieve these fibers and the gas sensing mechanisms involved in their sensors. Graphene fiber gas sensors are presented based on the chemical composition of their target gases, with detailed discussions on their sensitivity and performance. This review reveals that graphene-based fibers can be prepared through various methods and can be effectively integrated into gas-sensing devices for a diverse range of applications. By presenting an overview of developments in this field over the past decade, this review highlights the potential of graphene-based fiber sensors and their prospective integration into future technologies.

Abstract:Gas sensors based on chemiresistive technology are attractive for their small size, low-cost fabrication, predictable electrical properties, and compatibility with electronic circuits. They have various applications from health and safety to energy efficiency and emissions monitoring. Despite exploring many gas-sensing materials to detect different gases for the above-mentioned applications, these sensors have limitations such as poor selectivity, high limit of detection, poor reversibility, high operating temperature, and poor stability that restrict their implementation in real-time applications. To address these limitations and improve the sensing performance toward target gases, various approaches have been developed. In this regard, an important aspect to improve the gas-sensing performance is to optimize the device architecture by selecting the appropriate gas-sensing material, electrode material, and electrode structure design. This review discusses the advancements in the novel gas-sensing materials, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), MXenes, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), group III–VI semiconductors, phosphorene, black phosphorus, metal ferrites, and high entropy oxides. In addition, this review discusses the impact of various electrode materials, including platinum (Pt), gold (Au), silver (Ag), chromium (Cr), indium tin oxide (ITO), and aluminum (Al), and its electrode structures and design parameters on the gas-sensing performance. The electrode structures covered in this review are head-to-head, interdigitated, fractal, and laser-induced graphene. Finally, this review highlights the summary, challenges, and future perspectives of novel gas-sensing materials, electrode materials, and their structures to improve the gas-sensing performance of chemiresistive sensors.

Abstract:Graphene and MXenes have emerged as promising materials for gas sensing applications due to their unique properties and superior performance. This review focuses on the fabrication techniques, applications, and sensing mechanisms of graphene and MXene-based composites in gas sensing. Gas sensors are crucial in various fields, including healthcare, environmental monitoring, and industrial safety, for detecting and monitoring gases such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and ammonia (NH3). Conventional metal oxides like tin oxide (SnO2) and zinc oxide (ZnO) have been widely used, but graphene and MXenes offer enhanced sensitivity, selectivity, and response times. Graphene-based sensors can detect low concentrations of gases like H2S and NH3, while functionalization can improve their gas-specific selectivity. MXenes, a new class of two-dimensional materials, exhibit high electrical conductivity and tunable surface chemistry, making them suitable for selective and sensitive detection of various gases, including VOCs and humidity. Other materials, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and conducting polymers, have also shown potential in gas sensing applications, which may be doped into graphene and MXene layers to improve the sensitivity of the sensors.

Abstract:Exposure to toxic gases resulting from rapid industrialization poses significant health risks living organisms including human. Consequently, researchers in this modern scientific era have shown keen interest in the selective detection of these toxic gases. The development of fast, economical, selective, and highly sensitive gas sensors has become a crucial pursuit to accurately detect toxic gases and mitigate their adverse effects on the natural environment. Graphene-based nanocomposites have emerged as promising candidates for selectively detecting toxic gases due to their extensive surface area. This review paper provides a comprehensive summary of recent advancements in graphene-based gas sensors. The paper also offers an overview of various synthetic strategies for graphene and its hybrid architectures. Additionally, it delves into the detailed sensing applications of these materials. Challenges and limitations in this field have been critically evaluated and highlighted, along with potential future solutions.

Abstract:As a two-dimensional (2D) material, graphene shows excellent advantages in the field of gas sensors due to its inherent large specific surface area and unique electrical properties. However, in the practical application of gas detection, graphene sheet is easy to form irreversible agglomeration and has some limitations such as low sensitivity, long response time and slow recovery speed, which greatly reduce its gas sensing performance. As a gas sensing material, three-dimensional (3D) porous graphene has been extensively studied in recent years owing to its larger specific surface area and stable structure. In order to synthesize graphene with different three-dimensional structures, many methods have been developed. Herein, the synthesis and assembly of three-dimensional graphene and its composites were reviewed, with emphasis on the application of three-dimensional graphene and its composites in the field of gas sensors. Abstract:Graphene/metal oxide-based materials have been demonstrated as promising candidates for gas sensing applications due to the enhanced sensing performance and synergetic effects of the two components. Plenty of metal oxides such as SnO2, ZnO, WO3, etc. have been hybridized with graphene to improve the gas sensing properties. However, graphene/metal oxide nanohybrid- based gas sensors still have several limitations in practical application such as the insufficient sensitivity and response rate, and long recovery time in some cases. To achieve higher sensing performances of graphene/metal oxides nanocomposites, many recent efforts have been devoted to the controllable synthesis of 3D graphene/metal oxides architectures owing to their large surface area and well-organized structure for the enhanced gas adsorption/diffusion on sensing films. This review summarizes recent advances in the synthesis, assembly, and applications of 3D architectured graphene/metal oxide hybrids for gas sensing.

Abstract:Room-temperature (RT) gas sensing is desirable for battery-powered or self-powered instrumentation that can monitor emissions associated with pollution and industrial processes. This review (with 171 references) discusses recent advances in three types of porous nanostructures that have shown remarkable potential for RT gas sensing. The first group comprises hierarchical oxide nanostructures (mainly oxides of Sn, Ni, Zn, W, In, La, Fe, Co). The second group comprises graphene and its derivatives (graphene, graphene oxides, reduced graphene oxides, and their composites with metal oxides and noble metals). The third group comprises 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (mainly sulfides of Mo, W, Sn, Ni, also in combination with metal oxides). They all have been found to enable RT sensing of gases such as NOx, NH3, H2, SO2, CO, and of vapors such as of acetone, formaldehyde or methanol. Attractive features also include high selectivity and sensitivity, long-term stability and affordable costs. Strengths and limitations of these materials are highlighted, and prospects with respect to the development of new materials to overcome existing limitations are discussed.Graphical AbstractThe review summarizes the most significant progresses related to room temperature gas sensing by using hierarchical oxide nanostructures, graphene and its derivatives and 2D transition metal dichalcogenides, highlighting the peculiar gas sensing behavior with enhanced selectivity, sensitivity and long-term stability.

Abstract:The World Health Organization reported that 4.2 million deaths every year were a direct result of exposure to ambient air pollution (NO2, SO2, NH3, CO2, CO, CH4). There is a well-demonstrated global need for high sensitivity, low cost and low energy consumption miniaturised gas sensors to be deployed in a dense network and to be used in an attempt to pinpoint and avoid high pollution hot spots. The high sensitivity of graphene to the local environment has shown to be highly advantageous in sensing applications, where ultralow concentrations of adsorbed molecules induce a significant response on the electronic properties of graphene. This is commonly attributed to the π electrons of graphene, being directly exposed to the surrounding environment. The unique electronic structure makes graphene the 'ultimate' sensing material for applications in environmental monitoring and air quality. In this review, we present the frontiers of graphene-based sensors considering both electrical and optical methods of detection and discuss the topical progress in an attempt to establish whether graphene can be considered as the ideal sensing material. We pay special attention to the optimization of the sensor performance, using various graphene hybrids and doping mechanisms. Furthermore, we present the recent developments in other 2D material-based sensors that have followed in the wake of graphene. We discuss the benchmarked parameters of graphene sensors, such as sensitivity, selectivity, response/recovery time and detection limit, and compare them with other 2D materials as well as existing state-of-the-art sensors currently being used in the field. We also perform a brief market analyses for the environmental sensing industry as well as provide a Strengths—Weaknesses—Opportunities—Threats analysis of graphene technology for environmental sensing.

Understanding and optimization of graphene gas sensors

Abstract:Graphene holds great promise in gas sensor applications due to its excellent electrical transport properties and extraordinarily large surface-to-bulk ratio, rendering the whole atomic-thin films easily affected by gaseous molecules. One unique feature of graphene-based gas sensors is their reversible molecular physical adsorption/desorption mechanism that does not noticeably cause structural distortion or property degradation that chemical reactions would. Given the underlying principle of graphene sensors is the charge transfer between gases and graphene, the initial graphene doping level should be critical in the final sensor performance; however, such knowledge has been largely missed in prior reports. Here, we fabricated graphene transistors to examine the sensor properties using prototypical testing gas NO2. We found that the distinct initial doping levels of graphene may lead to opposite electrical responses when graphene sensors are exposed to NO2. The electrical response is triggered by the charge transfer between graphene and NO2 (and its dimer N2O4). Our work highlights the role of graphene conditions in sensor performance, suggests the practical avenues to optimize graphene sensors, and unravels the complex interactions between adsorbed molecules and graphene, which provide valuable guidance for the mass production of commercialized graphene sensors.

Abstract:The increasing demand to mitigate the alarming effects of the emission of ammonia (NH3) on human health and the environment has highlighted the growing attention to the design of reliable and effective sensing technologies using novel materials and unique nanocomposites with tunable functionalities. Among the state-of-the-art ammonia detection materials, graphene-based polymeric nanocomposites have gained significant attention. Despite the ever-increasing number of publications on graphene-based polymeric nanocomposites for ammonia detection, various understandings and information regarding the process, mechanisms, and new material components have not been fully explored. Therefore, this review summarises the recent progress of graphene-based polymeric nanocomposites for ammonia detection. A comprehensive discussion is provided on the various gas sensor designs, including chemiresistive, Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM), and Field-Effect Transistor (FET), as well as gas sensors utilising the graphene-based polymer nanocomposites, in addition to highlighting the pros and cons of graphene to enhance the performance of gas sensors. Moreover, the various techniques used to fabricate graphene-based nanocomposites and the numerous polymer electrolytes (e.g., conductive polymeric electrolytes), the ion transport models, and the fabrication and detection mechanisms of ammonia are critically addressed. Finally, a brief outlook on the significant progress, future opportunities, and challenges of graphene-based polymer nanocomposites for the application of ammonia detection are presented.

Abstract:Over the past decade, organic semiconductors and renewable resources have aroused great interest in basic research and practical applications. Composites based on organic materials and materials of biological origin, if not all bio-based, are potentially abundant and partly biodegradable. These materials have demonstrated advantages making them ideally suited for gas-sensing applications. Herein, we present different detection principles of gas sensing, such as electrochemical, resistive, capacitive, and acoustic sensors. Besides, we describe sensing properties and suitable materials to enhance the selectivity, sensitivity and response/recovery time of gas sensors. In addition, an overview of different forms of materials based on renewable resources and inorganic/organic semiconductors, as well as the development of different types of sensors are discussed. Finally, challenges and future directions are examined in order to develop a low-cost microscale sensing technology using composite materials based on renewable resources. We anticipate that chemical engineering, computer science, machine learning and embedded systems can contribute to the development of new sensing materials.

Abstract:Gas-sensing technology has witnessed significant advancements that have been driven by the emergence of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) and their tailored nanocomposites. This comprehensive review surveys the recent progress made in the construction methods and applications of functionalized GQDs and GQD-based nanocomposites for gas sensing. The gas-sensing mechanisms, based on the Fermi-level control and charge carrier depletion layer theory, are briefly explained through the formation of heterojunctions and the adsorption/desorption principle. Furthermore, this review explores the enhancements achieved through the incorporation of GQDs into nanocomposites with diverse matrices, including polymers, metal oxides, and 2D materials. We also provide an overview of the key progress in various hazardous gas sensing applications using functionalized GQDs and GQD-based nanocomposites, focusing on key detection parameters such as sensitivity, selectivity, stability, response and recovery time, repeatability, and limit of detection (LOD). According to the most recent data, the normally reported values for the LOD of various toxic gases using GQD-based sensors are in the range of 1-10 ppm. Remarkably, some GQD-based sensors exhibit extremely low detection limits, such as N-GQDs/SnO2 (0.01 ppb for formaldehyde) and GQD@SnO2 (0.10 ppb for NO2). This review provides an up-to-date perspective on the evolving landscape of functionalized GQDs and their nanocomposites as pivotal components in the development of advanced gas sensors.
An overview on room-temperature chemiresistor gas sensors based on 2D materials: Research status and challenge

Abstract:It is necessary to develop efficient sensing materials, high-performance sensors and detailed mechanism study of chemiresistor gas sensors for applications in the fields of toxic gas monitoring, smart home, non-traumatic disease marker, wearable electronics, etc. Two-dimensional materials (2DMs), including graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), black phosphorus (BP), graphitic carbon nitride ( g -C 3 N 4 ), MXenes, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), boron nitride (BN) and others, have proven to be attractive for fabrication of chemiresistor gas sensors due to their unique structure and remarkable characteristics. A major focus of this paper on advances and challenges in gas sensors based on 2DMs. Firstly, the electronic structure, physical and chemical properties and semiconductor properties of 2DMs are described. Secondly, the synthesis methods and gas-sensitive properties of 2DMs based gas sensors are introduced. In addition, strategies of improving gas sensors based on 2DMs are also discussed. Finally, the developments trend for 2DMs based gas sensors is presented from the following aspects: regulation of microstructure, contact between 2DMs and substrates, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) based gas sensors and gas sensor arrays, flexible and wearable gas sensors, smart self-power and wireless gas sensors, theoretical calculation and in-situ characterization, influence of humidity on gas sensitivity.

Abstract:Graphene, renowned for its exceptional physicochemical attributes, has emerged as a favored substrate for integrating a wide array of inorganic and organic materials in scientific endeavors and innovations. Electrochemical graphene-based nanocomposite sensors have been developed by incorporating diverse nanoparticles into graphene, effectively immobilized onto electrodes through various techniques. These graphene-based nanocomposite sensors have effectively detected and quantified various electroactive species in samples. This review delves into using graphene nanocomposites to fabricate electrochemical sensors, leveraging the exceptional electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties inherent to graphene derivatives. These nanocomposites showcase electrocatalytic activity, substantial surface area, superior electrical conductivity, adsorption capabilities, and notable porosity, which are highly advantageous for sensing applications. A myriad of characterization techniques, including Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), BET surface area analysis, and X-ray diffraction (XRD), have proven effective in exploring the properties of graphene nanocomposites and validating the adjustable formation of these nanomaterials with graphene. The applicability of these sensors across various matrices, encompassing environmental, food, and biological domains, has been evaluated through electrochemical measurements, such as cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Here, we present extensive study of transport properties of sensors based on covalently functionalized graphene monolayer (GML) with graphene electrodes. The transmissions, density of states and current-voltage characterisctics supported by analysis of charge distribution of GML functionalized by -CH3, -CH2, -NH2, -NH and -OH fragments have been calculated by means of density functional theory (DFT) and non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF). Further, we demonstrate how to control the device sensitivity by manipulating: (i) concentration, (ii) particular arrangement, and (iii) type of surface groups. We explain the underlying detection physical mechanisms. Comparisons of the theoretical results to available experimental data are provided are made and show good agreement.

Abstract:The large specific surface area and strong adsorption ability of graphene oxide and its derivates such as partially or fully reduced graphene oxide are attractive for gas-sensing applications. Such materials are also easy to work with and are economically attractive and are thus suited to large scale fabrication. Here we compare graphene oxide with two partially reduced graphene oxide materials. In the first, ascorbic acid is used as a weak reducer and in the second, we demonstrate a new thiolation/reduction route which can also partially reduce graphene oxide and in addition provide thiol groups at the surface. We then compare the three materials for use in a simple drop-cast sensor system. The signal profile data from the three different sensors vary in shape and intensity as well as response and recovery times for the two different analytes investigated. The data suggests these parameters could be used as an array system to discriminate between analytes.

Abstract:Carbon nanomaterials have been attracting a great deal of research interest in the last few years. Their unique electrical, optical and mechanical properties make them very interesting for developing the new generation of miniaturised, low-power, ubiquitous sensors. In the particular case of gas sensing, some carbon nanomaterials such as nanofibres, nanotubes and graphene are threatening the dominance position of other well established (nano)materials, yet the commercial exploitation of carbon nanomaterials is still a way off. This paper reviews the state of the art for electrical gas sensors employing carbon nanomaterials, identifies the bottlenecks that impair their commercialisation and also some recent breakthroughs. Finally an outlook in which challenges and opportunities are identified is given.
