Abstract:A honeycomb Floquet lattice with helically rotating waveguides and an interface separating two counter-propagating subdomains is analyzed. Two topologically protected localized waves propagate unidirectionally along the interface. Switching can occur when these interface modes reach the edge of the lattice and the light splits into waves traveling in two opposite directions. The incoming mode, traveling along the interface, can be routed entirely or partially along either lattice edge with the switching direction based on a suitable mixing of the interface modes.

Abstract:Photonic Floquet lattices provide an excellent platform for manipulating different topologically protected edge states. However, antichiral edge states have not been discussed much in Floquet lattices. Here, we propose a waveguide structure composed of two honeycomb Floquet photonic lattices rotating in opposite directions and find that the edge states propagate in the same direction on two opposite parallel zigzag boundaries of the system, thus achieving antichiral-like edge states. Furthermore, we propose a method to achieve smooth transition of the system without the artificial internal interface, thus eliminating the internal interface of the system, forming two co-propagating one-way transport channels at the system boundary, and discovering the antichiral edge states which are completely different from the well-studied topological edge states of chiral photonic systems. The long-distance propagation dynamics of the corresponding boundary states are numerically studied by comparing the intensity mode. In addition to their relevance for the topological properties of the Floquet lattice system, the results of this study may be applied to multi-channel optical switches, optical functional devices and other fields.

Topological insulators in longitudinally driven waveguides: Lieb and kagome lattices

Abstract:Topological insulators are studied via tight-binding approximations of longitudinally driven photonic lattices with three lattice sites per unit cell. Two cases are considered in detail: Lieb and kagome lattices. The lattice is decomposed into three sublattices, each of which is allowed to move independently of the others. Emphasis is placed on periodic driving induced by laser-etched helical coils along the direction of propagation. The linear Floquet bands are constructed for various intersublattice rotation patterns such as different radii, different frequency, phase offset, and quasi-one-dimensional motion. Depending on the nature of the band structure, bulk spectral bands with nonzero Chern number are found to support topologically protected edge states which can move unidirectionally. In this case, the modes move scatter-free around defects due to underlying topological protection. Intriguing mode dynamics are found including bidirectional topological modes and bulk-edge leakage, i.e., excitation of bulk modes at a defect for edge modes with dispersion frequencies near the bulk bands. Finally, certain nonlinear edge modes are also found to propagate unidirectionally and scatter-free around lattice defects. Controllable Photonic and Phononic Topological State Transfers in a Small Optomechanical Lattice

Abstract:We propose a scheme to achieve the photonic and the phononic state transfers via the topological protected edge channel based on a one-dimensional small optomechanical lattice. We find that the optomechanical lattice can be mapped into a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model after eliminating the counter rotating wave terms. By dint of the edge channel of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, we show that the quantum state transfer between the photonic left and the right edge states can be achieved with a high fidelity. Especially, our scheme can also achieve another phononic state transfer based on the same channel via controlling the next-nearest-neighboring interactions between the cavity fields; this is different from the previous investigations achieving only one kind of quantum state transfer. Our scheme provides a novel, to the best of our knowledge, path to switch two different kinds of quantum state transfers in a controllable way.

Abstract:The ability to tailor with a high accuracy the intersite connectivity in a lattice is a crucial tool for realizing novel topological phases of matter. Here, we report the experimental realization of photonic dimer chains with long-range hopping terms of arbitrary strength and phase, providing a rich generalization of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model which, in its conventional form, is limited to nearest-neighbor couplings only. Our experiment is based on a synthetic dimension scheme involving the frequency modes of an optical fiber loop platform. This setup provides direct access to both the band dispersion and the geometry of the Bloch wave functions throughout the entire Brillouin zone allowing us to extract the winding number for any possible configuration. Finally, we highlight a topological phase transition solely driven by a time-reversal-breaking synthetic gauge field associated with the phase of the long-range hopping, providing a route for engineering topological bands in photonic lattices belonging to the AIII symmetry class. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.183802 © 2024 American Physical Society

Observation of the magic angle and flat band physics in dipolar photonic lattices

Abstract:Evanescently coupled waveguide arrays provide a tabletop platform to realize a variety of Hamiltonians, where physical waveguides correspond to the individual sites of a tight-binding lattice. Nontrivial spatial structure of the waveguide modes enriches this picture and uncovers further possibilities. Here, we demonstrate that the effective coupling between $p$-like modes of adjacent photonic waveguides changes its sign depending on their relative orientation vanishing for a proper alignment at a so-called magic angle. Using femtosecond laser-written waveguides, we demonstrate this experimentally for $p$-mode dimers and graphene-like photonic lattices exhibiting quasi-flat bands at this angle. We observe diffraction-free propagation of corner and bulk states providing a robust experimental evidence of a two-dimensional Aharonov-Bohm-like caging in an optically switchable system.

Abstract:Abstract We show that the photonic crystal (PhC) made of dielectric cuboids with their centers forming a honeycomb lattice is characterized by a Z 2 ${\mathbb{ℤ}}_{2}$ topological index when the longer sides of six cuboids point towards the center of hexagonal unit cell. While the C 6 v symmetry regarding the center of unit cell is preserved, the C 3 symmetry regarding honeycomb sites is broken, which opens a bandgap in the Dirac dispersion of honeycomb structure and induces a band inversion between p modes and d modes. Rotating cuboids around their individual centers closes the bandgap and reopens a trivial bandgap. We discuss that this feature can be exploited for realizing a reconfigurable topological waveguide.

Abstract:The Lieb Lattice exhibits intriguing properties that are of general interest in both the fundamental physics and practical applications. Here, we investigate the topological Landau-Zener Bloch oscillation in a photonic Floquet Lieb lattice, where the dimerized helical waveguides is constructed to realize the synthetic spin-orbital interaction through the Floquet mechanism, rendering us to study the impacts of topological transition from trivial gaps to non-trivial ones. The compact localized states of flat bands supported by the local symmetry of Lieb lattice will be associated with other bands by topological invariants, Chern number, and involved into Landau-Zener transition during Bloch oscillation. Importantly, the non-trivial geometrical phases after topological transitions will be taken into account for constructive and destructive interferences of wave functions. The numerical calculations of continuum photonic medium demonstrate reasonable agreements with theoretical tight-binding model. Our results provide an ongoing effort to realize designed quantum materials with tailored properties.

Abstract:The investigation of topological state transition in carefully designed photonic lattices is of high interest for fundamental research, as well as for applied studies such as manipulating light flow in on-chip photonic systems. Here, we report on topological phase transition between symmetric topological zero modes (TZM) and antisymmetric TZMs in Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) mirror symmetric waveguides. The transition of TZMs is realized by adjusting the coupling ratio between neighboring waveguide pairs, which is enabled by selective modulation of the refractive index in the waveguide gaps. Bi-directional topological transitions between symmetric and antisymmetric TZMs can be achieved with our proposed switching strategy. Selective excitation of topological edge mode is demonstrated owing to the symmetry characteristics of the TZMs. The flexible manipulation of topological states is promising for on-chip light flow control and may spark further investigations on symmetric/antisymmetric TZM transitions in other photonic topological frameworks.

Abstract:In a topological system with an edge, the number of edge states is typically determined by the bulk topological invariant, as per the well-established bulk-boundary correspondence. However, anomalous topological edge states can arise in periodically driven Floquet systems even when the bulk Chern number is zero. A topological invariant (winding number) has been introduced to establish the appropriate bulk-boundary correspondence in such systems. Nevertheless, manipulating the topological properties of systems, whether static or driven, remains a significant challenge. In photonic systems, optical fields with diverse inherent dimensions such as frequency and polarization offer a natural avenue for topological-phase manipulation. In this paper, we present an alternative scheme for switching the topological invariant (winding number) of the system by changing the optical-waveguide mode within an integrated waveguide-based scattering network. With creating a bonding interface, this topological-phase switching facilitates the transmissions of the interface state in different directions. Experimental validation of this concept is demonstrated using a ring-optical-waveguide device. In this paper, we introduce an alternative strategy for tailoring the topological properties of optical systems.

Abstract:In recent years, there has been considerable interest in the study of wave propagation in nonlinear photonic lattices. The interplay between nonlinearity and periodicity has led researchers to manipulate light and discover new and interesting phenomena such as new classes of localized modes, usually referred to as solitons, and novel surface states that propagate robustly. A field where both nonlinearity and periodicity arises naturally is nonlinear optics. But there are other areas where waves propagating on background lattices play an important role, including photonic crystal fibers and Bose-Einstein condensation. In this review article the propagation of wave envelopes in one and two-dimensional periodic lattices associated with additional potential in the nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation, termed lattice NLS equations, are studied. A discrete reduction, known as the tight-binding approximation, is employed to find the linear dispersion relation and the equations governing nonlinear discrete envelopes for two-dimensional simple periodic lattices and two-dimensional non-simple honeycomb lattices. In the limit under which the envelopes vary slowly, continuous envelope equations are derived from the discrete system. The coefficients of the linear evolution system are related to the dispersion relation in both the discrete and continuous cases. For simple lattices, the continuous systems are NLS type equations. In honeycomb lattices, in certain cases, the continuous system is found to be nonlinear Dirac equations. Finally, it is possible to realize so-called topological insulator systems in an optical waveguide setting. The modes supported by these systems are associated with spectral topological invariants and, remarkably, can propagate without backscatter from lattice defects.
Floquet Π Mode Engineering in Non-Hermitian Waveguide Lattices

Abstract:Floquet topological systems exhibit rich physics associated with quasienergy band structures and new topological states; nevertheless, they are usually explored in Hermitian systems. Recent studies have shown the capability of non-Hermiticity in engineering topological states, while the interplay of Floquet topological phases and non-Hermiticity remains unclear. Here, we reveal that the non-Hermitian modulation can induce the phase transitions between trivial and nontrivial topological Floquet states. Our study theoretically predicts that the non-Hermitian modulation can create a Floquet pi mode in an originally topological trivial system according to the reopening of quasienergy band gap (i.e., the pi gap), which is well confirmed experimentally in the silicon waveguide platform. Our approach shows the powerful capability of non-Hermitian modulation in engineering topological modes in Floquet photonics systems and would inspire different possibilities in optical field manipulation in open systems.

Abstract:AbstractTopological photonics, accompanied by the ability to manipulate light, has emerged as a rapidly growing field of research. More platforms for displaying novel topological photonic states are being explored, thus offering efficient strategies for the realization of robust photonic devices. Optical waveguide arrays, described as a (n+1)‐dimensional system, are ideal platforms for studying topological photonics because of the characteristic that can exhibit light dynamics. Here, this work reviews the experimental implementations of the various topological phases in the optical waveguide arrays, and specifically discusses novel physical phenomena arising from the combination of topology with non‐Hermitianity and nonlinearity. It is believed that topological waveguide arrays provide powerful support for enriching topological physics and promoting the development of topological photonic integrated devices.

Abstract:We propose a robust programmable photonic integrated circuit platform based on a 2D Floquet-Lieb topological lattice. Reconfigurable topological photonic lattices typically require creating topologically distinct domains to guide interface modes, which requires a large number of coupling elements to be tuned and severely constraints the realizable circuit configurations. Here by taking advantage of the natural hopping sequence of light in the Floquet-Lieb microring lattice, we show that line defect modes and flat-band resonance modes can be excited by tuning only selective coupling elements, thus enabling efficient light steering and localization in the lattice interior. We show how basic circuit elements such as waveguide bends, splitters, combiners, and resonators, can be formed in the lattice, which can be used to construct general photonic integrated circuits. Compared to conventional topologically-trivial waveguide meshes, our topological photonic lattice requires fewer tuning elements while offering better tolerance to defects and random variations due to topological protection. The proposed topological lattice can thus provide an efficient and robust platform for implementing classical and quantum integrated photonic circuits.

Abstract:By taking advantage of the optical induction method, a non-Hermitian photonic graphene lattice is efficiently established inside an atomic vapor cell under the condition of electromagnetically induced transparency. This non-Hermitian structure is accomplished by simultaneously modulating both the real and imaginary components of the refractive index into honeycomb profiles. The transmitted probe field can either exhibit a hexagonal or honeycomb intensity profile when the degree of non-Hermiticity is effectively controlled by the ratio between imaginary and real indices. The experimental realization of such an instantaneously tunable complex honeycomb potential sets a new platform for future experimental exploration of non-Hermitian topological photonics. Also, we demonstrate the Talbot effect of the transmitted probe patterns. Such a self-imaging effect based on a non-Hermitian structure provides a promising route to potentially improve the related applications, such as an all-optical-controllable Talbot–Lau interferometer.

Abstract:Switching on topology Ways to control and design topological features in various systems are being studied intensively because the resulting properties tend to be robust against things such as scattering and defects, endowing the system with topological protection. Maczewsky et al. now look to another regime in optics to show that optical nonlinearity can induce a topological change in the properties of a photonic lattice. At low excitation power, probe light uniformly leaks into the rest of the lattice, an optically trivial phase. Above a threshold power, optical nonlinearity induces a topological change in the properties of the photonic lattice, and probe light is confined to propagate along the edge of the structure. Abstract:Floquet topological insulators (FTIs) have richer topological properties than static systems. In this work, we designed different domain wall (DW) structures consisting of a Floquet photonic lattice with opposite helical directions. We investigated the existence and types of edge states in three shared coupling structures and the impact of these shared coupling structures on edge states. When two opposite helical lattices share a straight waveguide array coupling, the edge states are localized on the straight waveguide. When two opposite helical lattices share a clockwise (or anticlockwise) helical waveguide array coupling, the DWs consist of zigzag and bearded edges, but the positions of the zigzag and bearded edges of the shared clockwise waveguide array are different from those of the shared anticlockwise waveguide array. The slope and transmission rate of the edge states both vary with the degree of coupling between the shared waveguides. The characteristics of these edge states, such as transmission speed and band gap width, are also affected by the incidence angle, modulation phase factor, and helical radii, and the methods for controlling the edge states in different shared coupling structures are provided. This will help deepen our understanding of how topological structures influence the electronic and photonic properties of materials. This could also lead to combining topology with metasurface-based structured light, which would highlight many novel properties with great application potential for various fields, such as imaging, metrology, communication, quantum information processing, and light–matter interaction.

Abstract:Wave manipulation has always been popular research subject due to its striking physical phenomena and promising real-life engineering applications. Recently, the birth of topological insulators carved a new way for wave control because of the capabilities of such insulators in confining wave propagation along specific directions. However, routing such wave guiding path with a flexible approach and further exploration about higher-order topological insulators are still very immature. In this regard, we wish to tackle this issue by introducing anisotropy into a local resonance plate with C 4 v symmetry. Through comprehensive theoretical and numerical research, we reveal the whole picture of bandgaps and topological properties by tuning the distance between resonators. Distinct topological edge states along different directions can be enabled by purposely designing anisotropy and controlling phase confliction. Based on this phenomenon, a path-switchable wave-guiding topological insulator is designed where the wave transmission path can be flexibly tuned by changing the operating frequency. Subsequently, we design a higher-order topological insulator which exhibits remarkable energy concentration at corners due to the topological corner states. Regarding these properties, our research provides an eligible candidate for achieving wave filtering, wave routing, and we also offer possible solutions for next generation integrated solid-state phononic circuits.
