Abstract:The long-term stability of three-dimensional (3D) perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has become the major challenge for their commercial application. To solve this problem, the 2D/3D hybrid perovskites by incorporating bulky organic spacers in 3D perovskite films have been proposed as an efficient strategy to combine the high efficiency of 3D PSCs and high stability of 2D PSCs. In this review, we present the structure of 3D and 2D perovskite materials, discuss the transformation process from 3D to 2D perovskite, and summarize the key organic spacers used in 2D/3D PSCs. Most importantly, based on the appropriate selection of functional groups in organic spacers, we highlight the role of organic spacers in the fabrication process and formation mechanism of different types of 2D/3D perovskite heterojunctions including bulk incorporation model, surface treatment model, bulk incorporation and surface treatment coexistent model as well as other feasible models.

In Situ-Grown 2D Perovskite Based on π-Conjugated Aggregation-Induced Emission Organic Spacer Boosting the Efficiency and Stability of 2D-3D Heterostructured Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:The two-dimensional-three-dimensional (2D-3D) heterostructured perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have drawn widespread interest, wherein the organic spacer plays a significant role in the photovoltaic performance. Herein, a novel π-conjugated organic spacer with the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property, (Z)-2-([1,1'-biphenyl]-4-yl)-3-(5-(4-(3-aminopropoxy)phenyl)thiophen-2-yl)acrylonitrile (BPCSA-S), is designed and synthesized, which is successfully applied for the in situ construction of 2D-3D heterostructured PSCs via the two-step solution method. By virtue of the functional groups (i.e., cyano, thiophene, and amino) in BPCSA-S, the BPCSA-S organic spacer can trigger the in situ growth of 2D perovskites, which will serve as the template for the heteroepitaxial growth of 3D perovskites, thus obtaining a 2D-3D heterostructured film with high-quality and few defects. More pleasingly, benefiting from the AIE property and delocalized π-electrons in the π-conjugated BPCSA-S organic spacer, excellent photosensitization process and carrier transport can be achieved. Consequently, the resultant 2D-3D heterostructured PSCs yield a pleasing PCE of 22.07%, accompanied by mitigatory hysteresis, as well as enhanced stability. Our research shows a hopeful multifunctional organic spacer approach using the novel π-conjugated AIE organic spacer for high-performance PSCs.
Spacer Engineering of Diammonium‐Based 2D Perovskites Toward Efficient and Stable 2D/3D Heterostructure Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) based on 2D/3D heterostructures show great potential to combine the advantages of the high efficiency of 3D perovskites and the high stability of 2D perovskites. However, an in-depth understanding of the organic-spacer effects on the 2D quantum well (QW) structures and electronic properties at the 2D/3D interfaces is yet to be fully achieved, especially in the case of 2D perovskites based on diammonium spacers/ligands. Here, a series of diammonium spacers is considered for the construct ion 2D/3D perovskite heterostructures. It is found that the chemical structure and concentration of the spacers can dramatically affect the characteristics of the 2D capping layers, including their phase purity and orientation. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the spacer modifications can induce shifts in the energy-level alignments at the 2D/3D interfaces and therefore influence the charge-transfer characteristics. The strong intermolecular interactions between the 2,2-(ethylenedioxy)bis(ethylammonium) (EDBE) cations and inorganic [PbI6](4-) slabs facilitate a controlled deposition of a phase-pure QW structure (n = 1) with a horizontal orientation, which leads to better surface passivation and carrier extraction. These benefits endow the EDBE-based 2D/3D devices with a high power conversion efficiency of 22.6% and remarkable environmental stability, highlighting the promise of spacer-chemistry design for high-performance 2D/3D PSCs.
Tuning the Interfacial Dipole Moment of Spacer Cations for Charge Extraction in Efficient and Ultrastable Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:The two-dimensional (2D)/three-dimensional (3D) hetero-junction perovskite solar cell (PSC) has recently been recognized as a promising photovoltaic structure for achieving high efficiency and long-term stability. Rational design of the 2D spacer cation is important to achieve a win-win situation for defects' passivation and photogenerated carrier extraction. Herein, we carry out first-principles calculation to analyze the dipole moment of phenethylamine-type molecules and their resulting 2D/3D perovskites. Based on the results of theoretical calculation, the dipole moment of 2D cations can be well tuned by varying the number of fluorine atoms on the para-position of the benzene ring, which further determines the interfacial dipole across the 2D/3D heterojunction interface. A high dipole 2D perovskite layer at the interface between the 3D perovskite and hole-transporting material is found to promote charge transport and suppress charge trapping efficiently. As a result, our 2D/3D PSCs exhibit a champion power conversion efficiency over 22% and a fill factor over 83%. Moreover, our solar cells also show a remarkable stability, maintaining 80% of its initial efficiency for more than 1400 h without encapsulation under a 30 +/- 5% relative humidity.

Abstract:The introduction of morpholinium iodide (MPI) as an alicyclic organic spacer in 2D/3D perovskite solar cells enhances hydrogen bonding, and intermolecular interactions within 2D perovskite structure. This reduces structural disorder and effectively passivates defects, achieving a power conversion efficiency of 12.04% with improved stability. This study offers new insights into designing organic spacers for Sn‐based PSCs. The high defect density and inferior crystallinity remain great hurdles for developing highly efficient and stable Sn‐based perovskite solar cells (PSCs). 2D/3D heterostructures show strong potential to overcome these bottlenecks; however, a limited diversity of organic spacers has hindered further improvement. Herein, a novel alicyclic organic spacer, morpholinium iodide (MPI), is reported for developing structurally stabilized 2D/3D perovskite. Introducing a secondary ammonium and ether group to alicyclic spacers in 2D perovskite enhances its rigidity, which leads to increased hydrogen bonding and intermolecular interaction within 2D perovskite. These strengthened interactions facilitate the formation of highly oriented 2D/3D perovskite with low structural disorder, which leads to effective passivation of Sn and I defects. Consequently, the MP‐based PSCs achieved a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 12.04% with superior operational and oxidative stability. This work presents new insight into the design of organic spacers for highly efficient and stable Sn‐based PSCs.

Abstract:Incorporating 2D perovskite in 3D perovskite absorber holds great potential to improve the stability and efficiency of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the bulky-cation-based 2D structures often exhibit poor charge transport and are prone to formation of charge-extraction barrier that impedes efficient device operation. We address these issues by introducing aromatic spacers with enhanced molecular conjugation. Among our tested aromatic spacers, the pyrenylbutanamine (PyBA) spacer was shown to endow 2D perovskites with superior charge transport properties and efficient charge extraction from the bulk perovskite in 2D/3D PSCs, due to the highest degree of conjugation. As a result, we achieved a power conversion efficiency of up to 25.3% in a 0.16-cm2 single cell and 21.0% in a 24.8-cm2 module. Moreover, the incorporated PyBA substantially raised the resistance of 2D/3D PSCs against moisture and ion migration, resulting in enhanced environmental, thermal, and operational stability. Notably, the PyBA-based devices retained over 90% of their initial efficiency after 2000 hours at 25 °C and 80% relative humidity, or 1000 hours at 85 °C and 85% humidity, or 3000 hours of operation under continuous 1-Sun illumination at 40 °C, showcasing their enhanced stability compared to previously reported 2D/3D PSCs.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) perovskites have been attracting extensive attention due to their intrinsic stability compared with their three-dimensional (3D) counterparts. These materials are widely tailorable in composition, structure, and bandgap, and provide an intriguing playground for the solid-state chemistry and physics communities to uncover structure-property relationships. In the field of photovoltaic, the fabricated 2D perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have achieved high stability as well as sustainable breakthrough in power conversion efficiency (PCE). However, the PCE of 2D PSCs still lags far behind their 3D counterpart, which is attributed to the special physicochemical properties of organic ligands. This review focuses the 2D halide perovskites from a structural perspective, namely the Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) phases, Dion-Jacobson (DJ) phases, alternating cation in the interlayer space (ACI) phases and mixed organic ligands phases, which stems from the diversity and versatility of spacers. Then the impacts of the species, chemical compositions, and physical characteristics of spacers on 2D perovskites, especially on the structure, carrier behavior, and the specific properties of solar cells, were discussed. Finally, several strategies on the rational selection of novel spacers are elucidated, and an outlook toward high-performance of 2D PSCs is presented.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has been rapid development due to the excellent photoelectric properties, but it also faces the issues of poor stability in high humidity environment. The introduction organic diammonium iodide could effectively passivate defect and improve stability in three-dimensional (3D) perovskite by forming Dion-Jacobson (DJ) phase two-dimensional (2D) perovskites. Here, a stable alternative, 4-(aminomethyl) piperidinium iodide (AMPI), is developed for high-performance 2D/3D PSCs. The DJ 2D perovskite layer which is grown in-situ on the 3D perovskite not only boosts the stability of PSCs due to its intrinsically stable structure and alternating hydrogen bonding interactions between the layers of organic and inorganic, but also modulates the energy levels aligned possibly between perovskite layer and spiro-OMeTAD HTL, thus facilitate the charge transfer and improves the open-circuit voltage (V oc ). Finally, 20.11% power conversion efficiency (PCE) has been achieved of the 2D/3D PSCs. Furthermore, they exhibit batter stability in compassion of the control when they are stored in air conditions (25 °C and dark conditions) and 30–40% relative humidity for 700 h, which is owed to the moisture attacks protection from the layer of 2D perovskite to 3D perovskite films. This paper indicates the manufacture of high-performance and stable 2D-3D heterojunction PSCs used by nitrogenous heterocyclic compounds has a potential broad application prospect.

Abstract:Introducing two‐dimensional (2D) perovskite onto the surface of three‐dimensional (3D) perovskite could not only passivate the defects in 3D perovskite, but also protect the 3D perovskite from humidity invasion, which could improve the device stability. The choice of spacer cations in 2D perovskites directly influnces the overall properties of the 2D layer, which is crucial to the efficiency and stability of devices. Herein, trifluoromethyl benzylamine is developed as the 2D spacer cation, and the effects of ‐CF3 at different substitution positions on the surface morphology, carrier dynamics and device performances are systematically investigated. Results show that the 3‐TFPMAI‐treated 2D/3D perovskite film shows smoother morphology, with fewer surface defects and less nonradiative recombination. Moreover, with a matched energy level, 3‐TFPMAI modification can accelerate hole extraction and hole transporting. The 3‐TFPMAI‐treated 2D/3D cell achieves a champion efficiency of 22.68%. What's more, the introduction of fluoride‐containing groups increases the hydrophobicity of the 2D layer, which effectively resists moisture erosion and greatly improves the long‐term and operational stability of the PSCs. Abstract:2D perovskites possess superior humidity stability but inferior power conversion efficiency (PCE) compared with 3D perovskites due to their typically insulating spacers. Size of the spacer cation is determinative for the formation of 2D perovskite, and fullerene is believed not to be capable of templating 2D perovskite structure because of its larger size than the width of the lead-halide octahedron despite its well-known strong electron-accepting ability. Herein, a novel amino-functionalized fullerene derivative (abbreviated as C-60-BPAM) is developed and an 'improbable' spacer for 2D/3D hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs), achieving enhanced electron transport is applied. Unlike most of the reported alkylammonium spacers that are based on insulating organic tails, the incorporation of a highly conductive fullerene tail within C-60-BPAM(2+) leads to increased electron density in 2D/3D perovskite and induces an additional built-in electric field, facilitating electron transport in PSCs. Besides, the 2D/3D hybrid structure helps to passivate both of the shallow- and deep-level defects within perovskite. As a result, the PCE of 2D/3D PSCs improves from 19.36% (3D MAPbI(3) PSCs) to 20.21%. Moreover, the 2D/3D PSCs show significant improvement in the humidity stability compared to the 3D counterparts.

Abstract:The recent development of quasi‐2D perovskite solar cells have drawn significant attention due to the improved stability of these materials and devices against moisture compared to their 3D counterparts. However, the optoelectronic properties of 2D perovskites need to be optimized in order to achieve high efficiency. In this work, the effect of spacer cations, i.e., phenethylammonium (PEA), 4‐fluorophenethylammonium (F‐PEA), and 4‐methoxyphenethylammonium (MeO‐PEA) on the optoelectronic properties and device performance of quasi‐2D perovskites is systematically studied. It is observed that both larger and more hydrophobic cations can improve perovskite stability against moisture, while larger size can adversely influence the device performance. Interestingly, with F‐PEA or MeO‐PEA, distribution of <i>n</i> value can be shifted toward high 3D content in quasi‐2D perovskite layers, which enables lower bandgaps and possibly lower exciton binding energy. Due to the best charge transport and lowest bandgap, the F‐PEAI‐based quasi‐2D perovskite (<i>n</i> = 5) solar cell shows a highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.5% with excellent stability in air with a humidity of 40–50%, keeping 90% of the original PCE after 40 d. It is believed that the approach may open a way for the design of new organic spacer cations for stable low‐dimensional hybrid perovskites with high performance.

Abstract:The insertion of organic spacers into halide perovskite slabs has offered a trade-off between the efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). The layered structure of diammonium-intercalated cesium lead halide perovskites is virtually unexplored, in contrast to several works on the monoammonium system. In this report, we find that perovskite with 1,4-butanediammonium (BDA) and cesium cations can only form n = 1 and n = 2 layered isologues defined by the chemical formula of (BDA)Csn-1Pbn(I0.7Br0.3)3n+1, while the n = 3-4 ones will self-construct into unique heterostructures comprising separated quantum wells (QWs; n = 1-2) and 3D (n = ∞) perovskites. We highlight that the 2D/3D heterostructures show a structural resemblance to that of bulk heterojunction in organics, thus improving the charge separation and transport more than surface passivation. Solar cells based on the (BDA)Cs3Pb4I9.1Br3.9 (n = 4) absorbing layer delivered a power conversion efficiency (PCE) reaching 9.49% with ideal light and thermal stability.

Abstract:Bilayer 3D/2D heterojunction perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted increasing interest due to great advantages of high power conversion efficiency (PCE) and ultrastability. Previous studies are mostly focused on addressing the issue of poor charge transport originated from the spacer cations or random phase distribution of 2D perovskite in 3D/2D heterojunction. However, the carrier recombination at the surface of 2D layer is often ignored. Herein, a novel strategy of passivating 2D perovskite in 3D/2D heterojunction with a thin surface termination layer (STL) is proposed. It demonstrates that surface defects of 2D perovskite are terminated by the molecule of 2-amino-5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole through multi-site interaction, leading to the significant suppression of non-radiative recombination and considerable improvement of hole transport with the well-aligned energy band simultaneously. As a result, the PSCs with the constructed 3D/2D/STL structure processed in air have achieved a champion PCE of 25.09% with high open-circuit voltage of 1.211 V (the voltage deficient of 0.349 V). The unencapsulated devices retain exceeding 90% of the initial PCE after storing in air for 1008 h or under illumination in N2 for 504 h. This work opens up an important, but unnoticed topic of defect passivation of 2D perovskite for 3D/2D heterojunction PSCs.
A 2D/3D heterojunction engineering for carbon-based hole-transport-layer-free perovskite solar cells

Abstract:Formation of a two-dimensional (2D) perovskite layer on the top of three-dimensional (3D) perovskite has been demonstrated to be effective in reducing interfacial charge recombination and improving the performance and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, it is difficult to fabricate 2D/3D perovskite heterojunction with accurate composition and structure through only solution process, and the location of 2D perovskite is also difficult to regulated owing to the uncontrolled cation exchange between organic constituents, which results in mismatched energy level arrangements. Herein, a 2D perovskite with a spacer cation of 1, 4-dimethylphenylene ammonium is grown on 3D perovskite film by the solid-state heat-pressure method. The relevant growth process, light absorption ability, energy level regulation and stability property of the samples are systematically investigated. A broad range of experimental characterizations exhibit that the introduction of 2D perovskite improve the energy level alignment with adjacent carbon electrode and enhance the hydrophobic property of the perovskite sample. As a result, a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 15.63% is achieved for the carbon-based hole-transport-layer-free PSCs based on 2D/3D heterojunction, which is higher than that of 11.88% for the control 3D device. Simultaneously, the improved device retains 90% of initial performance after aging for 1000 h in ambient conditions. The present work opens a new avenue for designing 2D/3D perovskite heterojunction and improve the performance and stability of PSCs.

Abstract:Progress toward perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with higher efficiency and stability requires further enhancing the light absorption, reducing the carrier recombination at defects and interfaces, improving the charge carrier separation, and minimizing the energy loss crossing the interfaces. Interface passivation and device structure optimization are the main strategies to improve efficiency and device stability. In this work, we report a simple method to combine the two strategies, i.e., realize the pervoskite heterostructure and the passivation layer simultaneously in a single two-dimensional (2D) PEA2PbI4–three-dimensional (3D) MAPbI3 composite perovskite interfacial layer. We use a mixed solution of methylammonium iodide (MAI) and phenethylammonium iodide (PEAI) to react with the intentionally introduced excess PbI2 in the Cs0.05(MA0.15FA0.85)0.95Pb(I0.85Br0.15)3 (CsMAFA) perovskite layer and form the MAPbI3/CsMAFA heterostructure and the 2D PEA2PbI4 perovskite passivation layer. Systematic investigations show that the MAPbI3/CsMAFA heterostructure can enhance the light absorption and the charge carrier separation at the interfaces, and thus improve the short-circuit current (J sc) of solar cells. The 2D PEA2PbI4 perovskite layer can effectively passivate the interfacial defects and improve the fill factor (FF) and open-circuit voltage (V oc). The working mechanisms of MAI and PEAI treatment are also discussed. This work offers a promising path for the fabrication of highly efficient and stable PSCs.
