Abstract:Ethical literary criticism reads interprets and analyzes literature from an ethical perspective. It argues that literature is a unique expression of ethic and morality within a certain historical period, and that literature is not just an art of language but rather an art of text. In light of ethical literary criticism, moral enlightenment and education are literature's primary function, while aesthetic appreciation is merely second to it. Specifically, ethical literary criticism seeks to unpack the ethical features of literary works, to describe characters and their lives from the vantage point of ethics, and to make ethical judgments about them. In the history of human civilization, mankind underwent two important processes: natural selection and ethical selection. Natural selection allowed human beings to evolve from apes physically, whereas ethical selection distinguishes them from animals spiritually. In an ethical sense, mankind is the outcome of the Sphinx factor, which can be seen as the combination of the human and animal factors. The Sphinx factor is the central element expressed in literary works.

Abstract:The essence of Wang Bi's philosophy is non-being. The meaning of "non-being" makes the awakening of man possible, and furthermore, makes the awakening of literature and arts possible. Mood, as a core concept in Chinese aesthetics, has transcendence from concrete to abstract, from existence to non-existence and from finite to infinite. It also has a character of "non-being" and there must be an inner connection between them. The experience of "non-being", as part of Wang's philosophy, has inner influence on the experience of beauty.

Abstract:Leisure life is man's ideal existence and the aesthetic sense is the ideal form of man's experience.Leisure life can be regarded as man's ideal in that it has come into the condition of a(self-dependent being.) Abstract:This article introduces the aesthetic significance of Chinese calligraphy, one of the highest art forms in China. It focuses on three major aesthetic concerns manifested in classical texts on this art. First, Chinese art theory stresses that the forms (xing) of successful calligraphic works are never static; rather, they should be filled with internal force (shi). Second, calligraphic creation can be understood as a psychosomatic process, that is, involving coordination between the mind and the hand. Third, appreciation of Chinese calligraphy is identified with the process of reconstructing the calligrapher's creation of the work, which is analogous to Richard Wollheim's identifying criticism as retrieval. The last section examines the concept of qi and discusses what kind of aesthetic considerations encourage us to make a connection between Chinese calligraphy and abstract art.

Abstract:Aesthetics is just defined as the definition of art after the influence of analytic philosophy. Aesthetics in narrow sense makes itself isolated from social life and art practice. In order to get rid of this state, some contemporary western aestheticians look back to Alexander Baumgarten and his original definition of aesthetics. According to Baumgarten, aesthetics should cover all of the aesthetic life. Some aestheticians even advocate it can be further regarded as the fundament of philosophy. This inclining of aesthetics in broad sense can be found in Cai Yuan-pei's aesthetics, which is very famous in the beginning of the modernization process of Chinese aesthetics. This comparative study between Cai Yuan-Pei and Baumgarten is not only helpful to re-understand Cai Yuan-pei's aesthetics, but also useful for Chinese aestheticians to find the direction of future aesthetics.

Abstract:Camel Xiangzi has rich connotations as far as its text is concerned.Its aesthetics in narrative is different from traditional novels.The work concentrated on the three times of ups and downs of Qiangzi's rickshaw purchase and pursuit of love.That is to say,Xiangzi underwent three times of ups and downs in physical and mental world,which was how his tragic life came to be.It was the incarnation of Lao She's pessimistic consciousness and fatalism.Hence,we can see that Lao She had penetrated into the deep sense of human nature in terms of reflections of nationalism,in which he made explorations of life from ontological viewpoint.The superorganic aesthetics of his works implies Lao She's innovation in novel creation and his exquisite knowledge of Western and Chinese cultures,on which the new narrative guidelines of literature narration was formed,i.e.,"the mental literature" of "mutual use of humans and things".

Abstract:Han Yu and Yao He were important literary master from the mid Tang Dynasty,both leaving significant heritage in the history of Chinese literature. Although researchers seldom compare them in parallel,these two masters confronted the same issue of worldliness and solitude,since both of them were civil officials rising from the landlord class.Worldlinessmeans the speculation,hustle,and glamour of office,whilesolitudefocuses on the simplicity,tranquility,and peace of retreat in mountains and woods. Troubled by these conflicting aspirations,both the two masters had experienced the inward turn from aspiring to benefit the society to maintaining individual goodness. Such a turn conveys their concern and construction of their private world,whose prominent feature is the pursuit of leisure lifestyle of civil officials where they could manage their daily life with aesthetic attitude in their private world. Their leisurely and simple life attitude and elegant,quiet aesthetics have formed one of the essential elements of Chinese aesthetics.

Abstract:Chinese contemporary art is divided into three stages: following the Other, being valuated by the Other, and finally getting its identity. Only in the third stage can Chinese contemporary art have its selfawareness. Chinese contemporary art should display or already has displayed the paths to Xiang , the middle. This chapter discusses the intractable problem of the ontological status of works of art. The study of the ontology of works of art can touch a fundamental problem of metaphysics and benefit our understanding not only of works of art but also of other social and cultural objects. The problem of the ontology of the work of art seems to be not very elusive in Chinese aesthetics since the standard division in Chinese metaphysics is not bifurcation but trifurcation. Chinese art does not aim at the imitation of nature, but Chinese artists strongly emphasize the importance of the observation of nature. Abstract:The historical period from the Han and Tang to Song and Yuan Dynasties witnessed a great shift in aesthetic style and its features.In particular,Song aesthetics distinguished itself from the buoyant and aggressive characteristics of Tang aesthetics by placing prominence on experiencing emotional pleasure and philosophical rationality in real life.In other words,aesthetics in the Song Dynasty moved much closer to the groundswell of life and leisure while maintaining the pursuit of rationality.People at that time were active in infusing aesthetics into life and finding worldly concerns in aesthetics,which gave rise to the integration of aesthetics and leisure culture.The intimate relationship between aesthetics and life resulted in the rise and boom of leisure culture in the Song Dynasty.This combination of aesthetics and life became a highly sought-after trend.For instance,the Chinese expression wanwu shiqing(to experience emotional pleasure through leisure life) indicates that the purport of aesthetics is the bidirectional communication between art and life,reflecting people's identification with leisure culture,the effort for self-amusement and the pursuit of detachment. With regards to the infusion of worldly characteristics into aesthetics and art in the Song Dynasty,we can find a clue in its poetry,Ci,paintings and gardens,room decor,tea ceremony,amusement,etc.Song poems feature the description of trivial things in everyday life,thus revealing the poets' inner peace and serenity.Ci goes further in that direction by portraying the subtle charms of life.In Song paintings,the portrayal of ordinary life is blended perfectly into the natural landscape.Meanwhile,as more and more gardens passed into private hands,they were built in a way that was close to life,serving as a perfect shelter for both body and soul,and making a leisure life pattern possible.Men of letters in the Song Dynasty would model their dwelling design on gardens and adopt modest furnishings and household utensils.Tea-tasting in various forms was popular among scholars in the Song Dynasty,and its popularity obviously had much to do with the rise of leisure culture.In addition,scholars' pursuit of emotional pleasure through amusement in the Song Dynasty was much more than pastime;it reflected their elitist taste in leisure. Considered as the ontology of life,leisure signified free life,returning to nature and experiencing self.It was people in the Song Dynasty who attached great importance to leisure which had long been regarded as triviality,and the view to live a leisure life obtained its unprecedented importance.Leisure and amusement were integrated with each other,so that the fundamental way to live a leisure life was to incorporate proper amusement.The objective of aesthetics and leisure for people in the Song Dynasty was to pursue the state above worldly considerations,which on one hand went beyond concrete object,and on the other hand exceeded such concerns as family background,failure or success,praise or blame,and right or wrong.The ultimate state above worldly considerations was actually the leisure of mind as an aesthetic state. The the Song Dynasty was a historical period during which the traditional Chinese leisure culture thrived and matured,and this was what made Song aesthetics special and different from that of Tang and all other dynasties.However,this important point has been ignored in the previous research into the aesthetics of the Song Dynasty.From the perspective of aesthetics in life and traditional Chinese Sage's ontology,effort and spiritual state,the authors have undertaken a step-by-step analytical study on the purport and spiritual state of aesthetics in the Song Dynasty.

Abstract:Aesthetic transcendence is a problem that the Chinese literary theory and aesthetics are facing in the 21th century.The peculiar nature of aesthetic transcendence lies in the realization of inner freedom in one's life.Cultural studies are only complement and improvement to the conception and methods of traditional literary studies,therefore can not take the place of aesthetic transcendence,but rather,takes it as its ultimate pursuit.Aesthetic transcendence is an organic unity between individuality and sociality in the sense of becoming,for which modern artistic activity like surrealism has provided a convincing evidence.The aesthetic can only transcend the reasonable,but can not transcend reason manifested in the protective forces of existence,thus realizing the organic unity between sensibility and reason through consciousness that transcends its temporary relief to itself,through individual consciousness that transcends universal consciousness,and through man's changing nature that transcends the nature of general freedom.

Abstract:Through the analysis of Xiao Hong's novel Sheng Si Chang (Field of Life and Death), this article points out that Xiao Hong's writing was quite loyal to the being of the modern Chinese folk due to her experience of frustrations with a sensitive heart. On the stand of enlightenment, she reached the perfection both in the depth of exposing the ignorance and savageness of Chinese folk and in revealing their firm holds of life and bitter struggles before death, which proves Xiao Hong among the best writers in modern China. Her poetic tone, lyrical sentences and hovering emotions, also mark herself as one of the modern Chinese writers who owned a keen sense of literary style.
