Abstract:Building and maintaining skeletal muscle mass and strength throughout life is a well-known aspect of a healthy lifestyle. Skeletal muscles generate the contraction force required for locomotor movements, such as joint motion, and it is well known that persons with a higher skeletal muscle-to-total body mass ratio have a better chance of surviving and recovering from numerous illnesses. [ 1–4 ] Unfortunately, sedentary lifestyles and aging cause changes in muscular dysfunction (muscle mass, strength, and physical function). [ 5–7 ] After the age of 30 years, muscle mass declines by 3% to 8% every decade, [ 8 ] and on average, one loses 0.2 kg a muscle mass per year. [ 9 , 10 ] The average loss in lean weight is 0.2 kg per year, [ 11 ] increasing to 0.4 kg per year by the fifth decade of life. [ 12 ] Muscle mass loss is a major concern among the elderly and sedentary. [ 13 ]
