Abstract:Metal nanoclusters (MeNCs), composed of a few to hundreds of metal atoms and appropriate surface ligands, have attracted extensive interest in the electrochemiluminescence (ECL) realm owing to their molecule-like optical, electronic, and physicochemical attributes and are strongly anticipated for discrete energy levels, fascinating electrocatalytic activity, and good biocompatibility. Over the past decade, huge efforts have been devoted to the synthesis, properties, and application research of ECL-related MeNCs, and this field is still a subject of heightened concern. Therefore, this perspective aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the recent advances of MeNCs in the ECL domain, mainly covering the emerged ECL available MeNCs, unique chemical and optical properties, and the general ECL mechanisms. Synthesis strategies for desirable ECL performance are further highlighted, and the resulting ECL sensing applications utilizing MeNCs as luminophores, quenchers, and substrates are discussed systematically. Finally, we anticipate the future prospects and challenges in the development of this area.

Abstract:In recent years, luminescent metal nanoclusters (metal NCs) with the unique features of intriguing optical properties and excellent biocompatibility, have emerged as a promising emitter in photoluminescence and electrochemiluminescence biosensing and bioimaging field. Nevertheless, with ever-increasing demand for sensitivity and brightness, relatively low quantum yields of metal NCs limit their potential applications. Gaining a deeper understanding of structure-function relationship will guide the preparation of high-efficient luminescent metal NCs and advance their applications. In this review, delving into fundamental photoluminescence and electrochemiluminescence mechanism, we discuss the effect of ligand structure on luminescent properties of metal NCs. Furthermore, we summarize recent progress in high-efficient metal NCs as well as their sensing and imaging applications on photoluminescence and electrochemiluminescence in recent three years. More importantly, we envisage the challenges of metal NCs in future research, which will bring exciting opportunities for the tailor-made functional metal NCs for promising analytical applications.

Abstract:Atomically precise metal nanoclusters (NCs) in the quantum size range have emerged as a unique class of materials. Such NCs exhibit intriguing, molecular-like properties such as excitonic absorption of light, molecular magnetism, and luminescence. For silver NCs, luminescence is one of their attractive properties which holds potential in biological and chemical sensing applications. Luminescence studies on silver NCs with a series of sizes, different structures, and ligand coordination modes are important for understanding the fundamental mechanisms and design of highly luminescent NCs for applications. Here we highlight some recent advances in luminescent Ag NCs, including the newly synthesized sizes, methods of PL enhancement, and some promising applications of luminescent Ag NCs.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) has emerged as a promising analytical technique that combines the distinct advantages of both electrochemistry and chemiluminescence. In recent years, nanomaterials have been extensively developed as a new generation of emitters, coreactants, coreaction accelerators, and nanoreactors in ECL reactions due to their tunable structures, and excellent optical and electrical properties. High-sensitivity nanomaterial-based ECL biosensing systems are in high demand for practical applications in trace marker detection. This review summarizes recent advances in signal enhancement for nanomaterial-based ECL biosensing systems in the past five years. These advances include the development of high-performance ECL emitters, the promotion of charge transfer between the emitter and coreactant, the improvement of the interfacial conductivity of the electrode materials, and the utilization of nanomaterial-based signal amplification techniques. The challenges and perspectives in this field are also discussed for the development and application of nanomaterial-based ECL biosensing systems.

Abstract:Metal nanoclusters (MNCs) can be synthesized with atomically precise structures and molecule formulae due to the rapid development of nanocluster science in recent decades. The ultrasmall size range (normally < 2 nm) endows MNCs with plenty of molecular-like properties, among which photoluminescent properties have aroused extensive attention. Tracing the research and development processes of luminescent nanoclusters, various photoluminescent analysis and characterization methods play a significant role in elucidating luminescent mechanism and analyzing luminescent properties. In this review, it is aimed to systematically summarize the normally used photoluminescent characterizations in MNCs including basic parameters and methods, such as excitation/emission wavelength, quantum yield, and lifetime. For each key parameter, first its definition and meaning is introduced and then the relevant characterization methods including measuring principles and the revelation of luminescent properties from the collected data are discussed. Then, it is discussed in details how to explore the luminescent mechanism of MNCs and construct NC-based applications based on the measured data. By means of these characterization strategies, the luminescent properties of MNCs and NC-based designs can be explained quantitatively and qualitatively. Hence, this review is expected to provide clear guidance for researchers to characterize luminescent MNCs and better understand the luminescent mechanism from the measured results.

Abstract:Due to their atomically precise structures and intriguing chemical/physical properties, metal nanoclusters are an emerging class of modular nanomaterials. Photo-luminescence (PL) is one of their most fascinating properties, due to the plethora of promising PL-based applications, such as chemical sensing, bio-imaging, cell labeling, phototherapy, drug delivery, and so on. However, the PL of most current nanoclusters is still unsatisfactory—the PL quantum yield (QY) is relatively low (generally lower than 20%), the emission lifetimes are generally in the nanosecond range, and the emitted color is always red (emission wavelengths of above 630 nm). To address these shortcomings, several strategies have been adopted, and are reviewed herein: capped-ligand engineering, metallic kernel alloying, aggregation-induced emission, self-assembly of nanocluster building blocks into cluster-based networks, and adjustments on external environment factors. We further review promising applications of these fluorescent nanoclusters, with particular focus on their potential to impact the fields of chemical sensing, bio-imaging, and bio-labeling. Finally, scope for improvements and future perspectives of these novel nanomaterials are highlighted as well. Our intended audience is the broader scientific community interested in the fluorescence of metal nanoclusters, and our review hopefully opens up new horizons for these scientists to manipulate PL properties of nanoclusters. This review is based on publications available up to December 2018.

Abstract:Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) has received considerable interest for broad applications due to the potential remarkably high sensitivity and extremely wide dynamic range. In recent years, due to the unique physical (structural, electronic, magnetic and optical) and chemical (catalytic) properties of nanomaterials (NMs), great efforts have been made to investigate their application in ECL. In this review, we present a general description of ECL related to NMs as the emitter. It mainly focuses on the basic mechanisms and the development of an ECL sensing platform fabricated from semiconductor nanocrystals and metal nanoclusters. Finally, we conclude with a look at the future challenges and prospects of the development of ECL.

Abstract:High-performance nanomaterials have been seen as a new generation of electrochemiluminescence (ECL) probes or emitters for their finely tunable structure and concomitant remarkable properties, guaranteeing the prospective applications in the analysis and diagnosis devices with superior performances. The structure–activity relationships of ECL nanoprobes in nanoscale are presenting milestone in understanding of the ECL microscopic behaviors and mechanisms, and guide the exploitation of novel ECL probes. In this mini-review, we summarized the recent development of novel ECL probes based on the nanomaterials. The mechanism and relationships between their structure as well as the active sites and functionality were revealed. In addition, the design and regulation of the ECL nanoprobes were emphasized for the biosensing and imaging application. Finally, the potential prospect of the ECL nanoprobes, design, and their applications were discussed.

Abstract:Electrochemiluminescence(ECL) has become one of the most advanced immunodiagnostic method due to its near-zero background and high sensitivity. Ruthenium ( II ) Iris (bipyridine) [Ru (bpy)(3)(2+)] and its derivatives have been applied in commercial diagnostics, but their optical properties can not meet the requirement of state-of-art ECL analysis. Quantum dots (QDs) possess outstanding luminescence properties and seem to be ideal for developing a new generation of ECL emitters. However, the mechanism of ECL generation from QDs deserves further in-depth investigations and the ECL performance of QDs also needs to be improved. In this review, we focus on the important advancements and key scientific issues of QDs ECL. After an overview of the developments of the field, future perspectives about the developments of QDs ECL are also exhibited. We believe that spectroscopy, synthesis chemistry and electrochemistry should be combined together to advance the research.

Abstract:The microstructures of nanomaterials play important role in electrochemical and optical properties of nanomaterials. With wide applications of nanomaterials in electrochemiluminescence (ECL), how the microstructures of nanomaterials affect the ECL properties of nanomaterials have attracted increasing attentions. Deeper understanding of the relationship between microstructures of nanomaterials and ECL properties can not only facilitate better performances of nanomaterials in ECL applications, but also promote new emerging applications of nanomaterial-based ECL. In this review, recent progress on impact of microstructures of nanomaterials on ECL properties was introduced. The microstructures of nanomaterials include defect, morphology, surface ligand, valence state and spatial distribution of nanomaterial composition. The ECL properties involve ECL intensity and efficiency, wavelength and polarization of ECL emission as well as ECL triggering potential. In addition, the mechanisms of how microstructures of nanomaterials shape ECL properties were discussed. Finally, future perspectives in this field were provided. This review may inspire researchers in analytical chemistry and material science to design and apply nanomaterials with well-controlled microstructures for desired ECL performances in various applications.

Abstract:Cu nanoclusters (Cu NCs), which emerged as a new class of nontoxic, economic, and excellent phosphors and catalysts, have attracted increasing interest for a wide variety of promising applications in biolabeling and biocatalysis. However, the electrochemiluminescence (ECL) behavior of Cu NCs has never been reported in previous works. Here, anodic and blue ECL emission of Cu NCs was observed for the first time with the efficient coreactant of hydrazine (HZ), and the possible luminescence mechanism of Cu NCs/HZ ECL system was studied in detail. Briefly, HZ was oxidized, and Cu NCs got the energy to generate excited state Cu NCs* for light radiation. Furthermore, a highly sensitive "signal-off" sensing platform for the determination of dopamine has been developed upon effectively quenching of dopamine toward the Cu NCs/HZ-based ECL system. As a result, this proposed method for dopamine detection possesses high selectivity, good stability, and excellent sensitivity with a detection limit down to 3.5 × 10-13 M. This indicates that Cu NCs show potential for applications in ECL bioanalysis as a new type of low-cost and superior luminophore candidates.

Abstract:The recent progress in electrochemiluminescent (ECL) assay is reviewed. This review begins with the fundamental researches in ECL, including the discovery of new ECL-active species, such as biochemical, organic and metallorganic materials, digital modeling of ECL process, the flow cells used in ECL assay, and electrochemiluminescent sensor. The application of ECL in environmental analysis, immunoassay, nucleotide acid hybridization sensor. The applications of ECL in environmental analysis, immunooassay, nucleic acid hybridization assay, and other aspects are reviewed with the latest references in detail. Finally, the main problems in the further investigation are outlooked, so are its prospects.

Abstract:The continuous emergence of novel luminophores has been leading the development of electrochemiluminescence (ECL) analysis since the ECL phenomenon of silicon nanoparticles was first reported in 2002. Nanomaterial-based luminophores termed as nanoemitters exhibit great application potential in ECL bioanalysis. In this review, we systematically summarize the research progress of various types of ECL nanoemitters, such as semiconductor quantum dots (QDs), carbon dots (CDs), polymer dots (Pdots), aggregation-induced emission nanoparticles (AIE dots), and other nanoemitters including luminophor-edoped silica nanoparticles, metal-organic frameworks, covalent organic frameworks, and metal nanoclusters. We mainly emphasize the characteristic of these nanoemitters and their applications in ECL biosensing and bioimaging by using them as labels, and highlight some impressive cases in the last five years. Finally, we discuss current challenges in the field of ECL nanoemitters and point out their prospects.

Abstract:Electrochemiluminescence（ECL） is a kind of luminescent phenomenon caused by electrochemical reactions. Based on the advantages of ECL including low background, high sensitivity, strong spatiotemporal controllability and simple operation, ECL imaging is able to visualize the ECL process,which can additionally achieve high throughput, fast and visual analysis. With the development of optical imaging technique, ECL imaging at micro-or nanoscale has been successfully applied in immunoassay,cell imaging, biochemical analysis, single-nanoparticle detection and study of mechanisms and kinetics of reactions, which has attracted extensive attention. In this review, the basic principles and apparatus of ECL imaging were briefly introduced at first. Then several latest and representative applications of ECL imaging based on nanomaterials and micro-/nanostructures were overviewed. Finally, the superiorities and challenges in ECL imaging for further development were discussed.
Unraveling Mechanisms of Highly Efficient Yet Stable Electrochemiluminescence from Quantum Dots.

Abstract:With CdSe/CdS/ZnS core/shell/shell quantum dots (QDs) as the model system, time- and potential-resolved spectroelectrochemical measurements are successfully applied for studying the general mechanisms and kinetics of electrochemiluminescence (ECL) generation. The rate constant of electron injection from the cathode into a QD to form a negatively charged QD (QD-) increases monotonically from -0.88 V to -1.2 V (vs Ag/AgCl). Mainly due to the deep LUMO of the QDs, the resulting QD- as the key intermediate for ECL generation is structurally stable and possesses very slow spontaneous deionization channels. The latter (the main non-ECL channels) are usually 3-4 orders of magnitude slower than the rate constant of the successive hole injection from an active co-reactant into a QD-. The kinetic studies quantify the internal ECL quantum yield of ideal QD ECL emitters to be nearly identical to that of photoluminescence, which is near unity for the current system. Identification of the key intermediate, discovery of the related elementary steps, and determination of all rate constants not only establish a general framework for understanding ECL generation but also offer basic design rules for ECL emitters.

Abstract:As shown in the TOC, electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of the nanoclusters is introduced as a new signaling mechanism for elucidating essential electrocatalytic parameters and to complement foot of the wave analysis on voltametric current features. ECL provides kinetic insights during catalytic reactions for operando studies. Retrospectively, mechanistic understanding of the multi‐step ECL reactions offer guidance for the evaluation and optimization of ECL property. Atomically precise metal nanoclusters are increasingly exploited in electrocatalysis such as water electrolysis and CO2 reduction. The catalytic effects are generally evaluated by conventional electrochemical methods or end‐product analysis. Herein, near infrared electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of the nanoclusters is introduced as a new signaling mechanism to complement classical voltammetric analysis for elucidating essential electrocatalytic parameters. Coreactant ECL from an aqueous soluble Au22 nanocluster (NCs) enhanced by a common pH buffer materials 4‐(2‐hydroxyethyl)‐1‐piperazineethanesulfonic acid (HEPES) and by a piperazine drug hydroxyzine (HDZ) is studied under oxidative reduction pathways. Foot of the wave analysis on voltametric features and the kinetics profiles in potential‐step experiments are studied in different nanocluster and coreactant concentrations. Benchmark parameters such as rate constants are determined under EC (Electron‐transfer‐Chemical‐reaction) mechanism as feasibility validations. Because the luminescence properties of AuNCs are sensitive to the surface ligands or adsorbents, ECL is proposed as a new signal readout for operando studies providing insights for governing reaction mechanism and kinetics during catalytic reactions. Retrospectively, mechanistic understanding of the complex multi‐step reactions during ECL generation can provide guidance for the evaluation and optimization of ECL property for better quantitative applications.
