Abstract:The effect of four gas components, i.e., H2, N2, CH4, and CO, on sulfur transformation of a Chinese Yima coal during pyrolysis was investigated in a horizontal fixed-bed reactor at ambient pressure temperatures (350°-900°C). Compared with N2, H2 was the most effective on sulfur removal from coal during pyrolysis. The optimum temperature for sulfur removal of Yima coal in H2, N2, CH4, and CO was 900°, 550°, 550°, and 450°C, respectively, and the desulfurization at those temperatures reached 75.5, 39.1, 38.4, and 44%, respectively. From the content of sulfur form in residual chars obtained in different atmospheres at different temperature, the decomposition of pyrite mainly occurred at temperature region below 550°C in H2 and CO. In CH4 and N2, pyrite showed more stable and its main decomposition moved to relative high temperature region, i.e. 450°-550°C, and the pyritic sulfur content decreased rapidly from 1.19 at 450°C to 0.34% at 550°C in N2, and from 1.50 to 0.47% in CH4, respectively.
